76. Love Like a Mother: Finding God in the Spiritual Desert of Early Motherhood with Elizabeth Berget
Episode 76
Show notes
Motherhood can be beautiful, exhausting, sacred, and completely disorienting—all at the same time. And for many moms, one of the biggest surprises is how difficult it can become to feel close to God in the middle of caring for young children.
In this episode, I’m talking with Elizabeth Berget, author of Love Like a Mother: How the Sacred Work of Motherhood Reveals the Maternal Heart of God, about what happens when the spiritual practices that once sustained your faith suddenly feel impossible. Elizabeth shares honestly about her own postpartum experience, the guilt she carried when she couldn’t maintain her usual Bible study and prayer routines, and how that season led her to discover a deeper understanding of God’s maternal heart.
We talk about how Scripture gives us both direct and subtle pictures of God’s maternal qualities, how motherhood can actually help us understand God’s love more deeply, and how moms can connect with God in the middle of diapers, dishes, nighttime wake-ups, and toddler meltdowns.
In this episode, we talk about:
• Why early motherhood can feel like a spiritual desert—and why feeling disconnected from God doesn’t mean God is actually distant
• Elizabeth’s own postpartum experience with exhaustion, anxiety, and the guilt of feeling like she wasn’t doing enough spiritually
• The maternal imagery for God throughout Scripture, including God as a mother bear, mother hen, nursing mother, and one who comforts and sustains His people
• How the ordinary work of motherhood can reveal something about the character of God and remind us that we are made in His image
• Practical ways to connect with God throughout your day when an hour of quiet Bible study simply isn’t realistic
• How understanding ourselves as image-bearers of God can help us navigate the massive identity shift that comes with motherhood
• Why caring for your physical body is part of caring for the person God created you to beOne Thing I Want Every Mom to Remember:
You are not distant from God just because you don’t have the time or capacity for the spiritual practices you used to have.God is with you in the middle of the diaper changes, the nighttime wake-ups, the toddler meltdowns, and the endless ordinary work of motherhood. He is not looking at you with disappointment because you didn’t manage to have an hour of quiet time. He is gentle toward you in this season.
As Elizabeth reminds us, “God is so gentle to you in this season. So exceedingly gentle.”

75. Postpartum Psychosis, Faith, and Finding Hope After a Mental Health Crisis with Amanda and Colby Taylor
Episode 75
Show notes
Postpartum mental health struggles can be frightening and confusing, not only for the mom experiencing them but also for the spouse and family trying to understand what is happening. And when a crisis like postpartum psychosis enters the picture, it can turn a family’s world upside down.
In this episode, I’m joined by Amanda and Colby Taylor, authors of From Playgrounds to Psych Wards, to hear their deeply personal story of navigating postpartum psychosis, hospitalization, and the long road toward healing. Amanda shares how a traumatic birth at 32 weeks, a baby in the NICU, and extreme sleep deprivation preceded her mental health crisis. Colby shares what it was like to recognize that something was wrong with his wife and how he learned to support her through the uncertainty.
We also talk about the complicated intersection of faith and mental health, the role of professional care and community in healing, and how a crisis can affect both partners in a marriage. Their story is an honest reminder that healing takes time, asking for help matters, and families don't have to walk through difficult seasons alone.
In this episode, we talk about:
• Recognizing postpartum psychosis: Amanda shares the circumstances surrounding her traumatic birth, her baby’s NICU stay, and the early warning signs that led to a serious mental health crisis.
• Supporting a spouse through a mental health crisis: Colby describes the fear and confusion of realizing something wasn't right, making difficult decisions, and learning how to respond when Amanda experienced another episode.
• Navigating faith during mental health struggles: Amanda explains the challenges of distinguishing her experience of psychosis from her faith, and how she began processing what happened with God as she recovered.
• What the healing process really looks like: Their journey included medication, psychiatric care, talk therapy, journaling, Scripture, exercise, prayer, friendships, patience, and grace. Amanda shares why recovery wasn't an overnight process.
• How a crisis changes marriage and community: Amanda and Colby reflect on how their experience shaped their marriage, taught them the importance of showing up for one another, and opened their eyes to the power of practical support from their community.
• Why spouses need support, too: Colby shares why partners and caregivers need space to process their own experiences, seek counseling, and care for their own well-being while supporting someone they love.Finding Hope in God's Word:
Amanda shares encouragement from Psalm 23 and other Scriptures for moms who feel like they're drowning in postpartum struggles—even when another Bible verse or prayer feels like more than they can handle.
One Thing I Want Every Mom and Family to Remember:
You don't have to pretend you're okay, and you don't have to navigate a postpartum mental health crisis alone. Seeking professional help, leaning on your community, and relying on your faith can all be part of the journey toward healing.
Recovery may take longer than you hoped, and the spouse supporting a struggling mom may need support, too. Be patient with the process, accept help when it's offered, and remember that a difficult season doesn't mean your story is over.
If you or someone you love is experiencing symptoms of postpartum psychosis or another serious mental health crisis, seek urgent professional medical help.

74. Your Baby’s Gut Microbiome and Why the First 1000 Days Matter with Dr. Savita Srivastava
Episode 74
Show notes
You’ve probably heard the phrase “gut microbiome” everywhere lately—but what does it actually mean, and why does it matter for your baby?
In this episode, Dr. Savita Srivastava, a Yale-trained gastroenterologist and microbiome specialist, breaks down the science behind your baby’s developing gut microbiome and how those first 1,000 days can influence immune and metabolic health.
We talk about pregnancy, birth, breast milk, C-sections, combination feeding, formula, introducing solids, antibiotics, and even letting your baby get a little messy outside. Most importantly, Dr. Srivastava brings a message that moms need to hear: you don't have to do everything perfectly to support your baby's health.
In this episode, we talk about:
• What the gut microbiome actually is and why those trillions of microbes play such an important role in your baby's developing immune system and overall health.
• How pregnancy and birth can influence the microbiome, including what we know—and what researchers are still learning—about the pregnancy microbiome and vaginal birth.
• Why breast milk is so unique, including the live microbes and special sugars that help nourish beneficial bacteria in your baby's gut.
• What happens when breastfeeding doesn't go according to plan, including C-sections, pumping, combination feeding, shorter breastfeeding journeys, and formula feeding.
• Simple ways to support your baby's microbiome beyond breastfeeding, from introducing a diverse variety of foods to getting outside, interacting with pets, and experiencing the natural world.
• Why moms can let go of some of the pressure, because supporting your baby's health isn't about creating a perfect pregnancy, birth, feeding journey, or postpartum experience. One Thing I Want Every Mom to Remember:
There is no perfect way to do motherhood.Dr. Srivastava reminds us that breastfeeding is one piece of a much bigger picture—and that mom's health matters, too. Whether you're breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, formula feeding, or navigating something you never expected, there are still ways to support your baby's developing microbiome.
And when it comes to those first 1,000 days, some of the most helpful things can also be some of the simplest: nourishing foods, time outside, exposure to the natural world, and giving yourself permission to enjoy the messy, chaotic parts of raising a baby.

73. Becoming Her: Finding Your Identity Again After Postpartum Depression, Anxiety, and Rage with Alexis Schmittler
Episode 73
Show notes
Motherhood can be something you prayed for deeply—and still leave you wondering, “Where did I go?”
In this conversation, Alexis opens up about her experiences with postpartum anxiety, depression, and rage after the births of her two children, including the moment she realized she needed to tell her husband what was really going on and reach out for professional help.
We talk about the pressure to “bounce back,” the grief that can come with becoming a new version of yourself, mom guilt, social media comparison, and what it looks like to find your identity again—not by becoming who you were before motherhood, but by allowing God to shape who you're becoming.
In this episode, we talk about:
• Recognizing when postpartum struggles have gone beyond a hard day and having the courage to tell someone what's really going on.
• Postpartum anxiety, depression, and rage—and why moms need to know these experiences are real and deserve support.
• Letting go of the pressure to “get back” to who you were before motherhood and making space for the woman you're becoming.
• Finding your identity outside of motherhood through small moments of rest, creativity, movement, Scripture, prayer, and things that help you feel like yourself again.
• Mom guilt and social media comparison, and learning to recognize the difference between reality and the highlight reel.
• Walking through postpartum mental health challenges with faith, including seeking therapy and professional support while also praying and relying on God.One thing I want every mom to remember
You can love your children deeply and still find motherhood hard. Those two things can be true at the same time.
If you're struggling with postpartum depression, anxiety, rage, or feeling like you've lost yourself, asking for help does not make you a bad mom. You deserve support, and you don't have to walk through a difficult season alone.
Alexis also shares a beautiful reminder from her own journey: “I've lived to testify.” What you've walked through may eventually become part of the story God uses to encourage someone else.

72. Pelvic Floor Therapy Isn’t Just About Kegels: A Trauma-Informed Guide to Pregnancy, Pelvic Pain, and Postpartum Recovery with Dr. Abby Andres
Episode 72
Show notes
When you hear “pelvic floor therapy,” you might immediately think of Kegels. But pelvic floor physical therapy is about so much more than strengthening one group of muscles.
In this episode of A Bridge to Motherhood Podcast, I’m talking with Dr. Abby Andres, a physical therapist who specializes in obstetric and pelvic floor care, about what moms really need to know about pelvic health before, during, and after pregnancy.
Dr. Abby brings a trauma-informed approach to her work, recognizing that pelvic health can be deeply personal and that past experiences, birth trauma, pain, and even shame can affect how a woman experiences treatment. We talk about how to know when a symptom is something worth getting help for, what pelvic floor therapy can actually address, and what postpartum recovery should look like in those early weeks.
We also talk about the often-overlooked gap in postpartum care, why rest is productive, how to return to movement safely, and how virtual pelvic floor physical therapy can give busy moms practical tools to care for their bodies independently.
In this episode, we talk about:
• What trauma-informed pelvic floor therapy actually looks like and why feeling safe, heard, and in control matters during such an intimate form of care.
• The difference between “common” and something you simply have to live with, including pelvic pain, incontinence, constipation, bowel and bladder concerns, and other symptoms.
• Red flags during pregnancy that may indicate it's time to seek additional support rather than simply accepting discomfort as part of pregnancy.
• What postpartum recovery really needs, including why rest is productive and why those first few weeks don't need to look like intense workouts or “bouncing back.”
• Breaking the shame surrounding pelvic floor symptoms, including pain with intercourse, leaking, and other concerns moms may be embarrassed to talk about.
• How pelvic floor PT can work virtually, giving moms individualized tools and education so they can become more independent in caring for their bodies. One thing I want every mom to remember:
Just because something is common after pregnancy or birth doesn't mean you have to simply accept it.As Dr. Abby explains, the more important question is: How much is this symptom bothering you, and how much is it disrupting your daily life?
If pain, leaking, bowel or bladder issues, or another symptom is affecting your sleep, activities, relationships, or ability to enjoy your life, it's worth talking to a qualified provider.
And if you've been avoiding care because of shame or embarrassment, this is your reminder that you are not alone—and there are people who can help. Dr. Abby's approach centers on educating, validating, and inviting women into support rather than making them feel ashamed of what they're experiencing.
About Dr. Abby Andres
Dr. Abby Andres is a physical therapist specializing in obstetric and pelvic floor care. With a trauma-informed approach, she helps women navigate pelvic pain, pregnancy-related symptoms, postpartum recovery, core weakness, incontinence, bowel and bladder concerns, and more.

71. The Christian Mom's Guide to Preparing for Birth Without Fear with Jaimie Johnson
Episode 71
Show notes
Preparing for birth can bring a whole mix of emotions. You may feel excited to meet your baby, but also nervous about labor, pain, the unknown, or whether your birth will go according to plan.
In this episode of A Bridge to Motherhood Podcast, I’m talking with Christian birth doula and childbirth educator Jaimie Johnson about how we can prepare for birth physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually—without allowing fear to take over.
Jaimie shares how her own birth experiences led her into birth work and eventually inspired her to create a faith-based approach to childbirth education. We talk about preparing not only for birth, but also for the transition into motherhood, because pregnancy and birth can be opportunities for God to grow and prepare us for the women and mothers He is calling us to become.
We also dive into the importance of recognizing our fears instead of ignoring them, replacing fear and lies with God's truth, using Scripture and prayer during pregnancy and birth, and learning to advocate for ourselves while still trusting God with the outcome.
In this episode, we talk about:
• Preparing for birth holistically—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
• Working through fear and anxiety by recognizing our fears and replacing lies with God's truth.
• Using prayer and Scripture to prepare for birth and create a faith-filled birth team.
• Advocating for yourself in the birth room while still trusting God and seeking His wisdom in your decisions.
• Preparing for an unmedicated birth and why mental preparation and commitment can be just as important as physical preparation.
• Surrendering your birth plans to God and finding peace when your birth doesn't go the way you expected.A Scripture to Remember
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2
When the world, social media, family, friends, and even our own fears are filling our minds with noise about what birth should look like, we can continually return to God's truth and ask Him for wisdom about the decisions in front of us.

70. What the Church Gets Wrong About Supporting Postpartum Moms
Episode 70
Show notes
Postpartum moms need more than a meal train and a quick “How’s the baby?”
They need to be seen, supported, and cared for, too.
In this episode of the A Bridge to Motherhood Podcast, Danielle talks about some of the ways the church can unintentionally make postpartum motherhood harder—including expecting moms to return to “normal” too quickly, asking them to serve before asking what they need, and sometimes offering spiritual answers to problems that also require practical support.
Because postpartum moms may need prayer and sleep.
They may need Scripture and a meal.
They may need to trust God and ask for help.
These things are not opposites.
Supporting a postpartum mom is spiritual ministry—and the church has an opportunity to become a place where mothers don't have to pretend they're okay or carry the weight of motherhood alone.
And while we don't want to place unrealistic pressure on moms to maintain a perfect spiritual routine, we also don't want mothers to believe that their relationship with God has to disappear during this season.
So what does it actually look like to spend time with God when you're exhausted, overwhelmed, and barely have time to shower?
In This Episode:
• Why postpartum moms shouldn't be expected to return to “normal” immediately
• The difference between spiritual encouragement and spiritual pressure
• Why practical support is spiritual support
• What moms may need beyond “just pray about it”
• Why the church should ask what postpartum moms need—not just what they can do
• How supporting mothers can be a powerful form of ministry
• An invitation to join the upcoming workshop Staying Close With God Postpartum: Spending Time with Him When You Barely Have Time to ShowerJoin the FREE LIVE Workshop: Staying Close to God Postpartum: Spending Time with Him When You Barely Have Time to Shower

69. Postpartum Encouragement: Stop Carrying What God Never Asked You to Carry
Episode 69
Show notes
Have you ever felt like everything in motherhood depends on you?
The feeding.
The sleep.
The schedules.
Your marriage.
Your mental health.
Your identity.
It's easy to believe that if we just learn enough, research enough, or try harder, we'll finally feel like we're doing this motherhood thing "right."
But that's not what God asks of us.
In today's solo episode, Danielle shares a personal reminder the Lord placed on her heart during worship: Stop striving. Stop trying to do motherhood in your own strength.
Together, we'll explore what Scripture says about relying on God's strength instead of our own, how to renew our minds when we're overwhelmed, and why surrender is actually the beginning of wisdom—not giving up.
Whether you're pregnant, newly postpartum, or navigating the early years of motherhood, this episode will encourage you to lay your burdens at Jesus' feet and trust that His grace is enough.
In This Episode You'll Learn:
• Why so many moms fall into the trap of striving
• What 2 Corinthians 12:9 teaches about God's strength in our weakness
• How to seek God's wisdom before turning to everyone else's opinions

67. When Motherhood Doesn't Go as Planned: Finding God in the Unexpected with Kendall Mariah
Episode 67
Show notes
Motherhood doesn't always unfold the way we expect.
In this episode, I'm joined by Kendall Mariah, author of This Little Fire of Mine, for a deeply honest conversation about infertility, adoption, anxiety, neurodivergence, faith, and learning to trust God when life takes unexpected turns.
Kendall shares her journey of discovering infertility before marriage, navigating diagnoses of PCOS and endometriosis, and ultimately pursuing adoption. We talk about the grief that can come with unmet expectations, the courage it takes to embrace a different path, and how God often meets us in the places we least expect.
We also dive into topics that are often left unspoken in Christian circles—including ADHD, autism, anxiety, sexual assault, purity culture, and the shame many women carry as a result. Kendall shares how becoming a mother led her to better understand her own neurodivergence and why breaking generational cycles of shame and silence matters for the next generation.
Whether you're navigating infertility, struggling with anxiety, questioning your identity, or simply walking through a season that looks different than you imagined, this conversation will remind you that you are not alone—and that God is still at work in your story.
Inside this episode, you'll learn:
• Kendall's infertility journey and path to adoption
• Living with PCOS, endometriosis, ADHD, and autism
• The intersection of faith, anxiety, and shame
• How purity culture can impact women's mental and emotional health
• Breaking generational cycles of silence and shame

63. How to Support a Mom with Postpartum Depression: A Grandmother’s Perspective on Mental Health
Episode 63
Show notes
This episode is a special and meaningful close to our Maternal Mental Health Month series—a series that has been deeply personal, honest, and rooted in the hope that no mom feels alone in her struggle.
Throughout this month, we’ve had important conversations around postpartum mental health:
• With Brittany Keating of Cocoon and Bloom Collective, we talked about the difference between baby blues and perinatal mental health disorders—what’s normal, what’s not, and when to seek support.
• I shared my own story—openly and vulnerably—about my experience with postpartum depression, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts.
• My husband joined me to share what it looked like to support a partner through postpartum mental health struggles. And today, we’re closing this series with a perspective that doesn’t get talked about enough—a mother watching her daughter walk through it.
In this episode, I sit down with my mom, the first person I opened up to about my intrusive thoughts, to talk about what that experience was like from her side.
We talk about how she knew something wasn’t right, how she helped me find support, and what it looked like to walk alongside me without trying to take over. She shares honestly about the emotional weight of that season, how she educated herself on postpartum mental health, and how she supported not just me—but my husband, too.
This conversation is for the moms, the grandmothers, the partners, and the support people—the ones who want to help but may not always know how.
💛 In this episode, we cover:
Recognizing when something more serious is going on• What it’s like to hear your daughter share intrusive thoughts
• Navigating getting professional help for a loved one
• Supporting both mom and partner during postpartum struggles
• Learning how to step in—and when to step back
• Encouragement for family members supporting a mom in needThis episode—and this entire series—is a reminder that postpartum mental health matters, and no one is meant to walk through it alone.
If you or someone you love is struggling, please know that support is available and healing is possible.
💛 If this series has encouraged you, share it with a mom or support person who needs to hear it.

62. How to Support Your Wife Through Postpartum Depression & Anxiety (From a Husband’s Perspective)
Episode 62
Show notes
Postpartum depression and anxiety don’t just affect moms—they impact the entire family. But one voice we don’t hear from enough? The husband’s.
In today’s episode, my husband joins me to share what it actually looked like from his perspective as I walked through postpartum depression and anxiety. From the early signs he didn’t fully understand, to the moments that felt heavy and uncertain, to the practical ways he learned to support me—this is an honest, behind-the-scenes look at what postpartum can do to a marriage, and how you can walk through it together.
We talk about the red flags he noticed (like what he called “nesting on steroids”), the season where I was completely unable to care for our daughter, and what it looked like for him to step in and “just keep the ship from sinking.” He shares what he wishes more husbands knew, including the importance of paying attention to your wife’s emotional state—not just what’s happening on the surface.
This conversation is full of practical wisdom for both moms and dads—from how to communicate when emotions are high, to why sometimes the best thing you can do is sit next to her, hold her hand, and simply listen.
If you’re in the thick of postpartum, or preparing for it, this episode will help you feel less alone—and give your spouse the tools to support you in a way that actually helps.
Because this season? It’s not forever. And you don’t have to navigate it alone.
💛 In This Episode, We Talk About:
• What postpartum depression and anxiety looked like in real life
• A husband’s perspective on navigating postpartum mental health
• Practical ways husbands can show up during this season
• Communication struggles (and what actually helps)If this episode encouraged you, supported you, or helped you feel a little less alone, I want to invite you into a space where you don’t have to navigate postpartum by yourself.

60. Baby Blues vs Postpartum Anxiety and Depression How to Know When to Get Help with Brittany Keating
Show notes
Are what you’re feeling normal postpartum emotions… or could it be something more?
In this episode, I’m joined by Brittany Keating, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) with a perinatal mental health certification (PMH-C) and founder of Cocoon and Bloom Collective, to unpack a question so many moms quietly wonder about:
What’s the difference between baby blues and a perinatal mental health disorder?
We talk through what the baby blues can look like, how they differ from postpartum depression and anxiety, and what signs may indicate it’s time to reach out for support.
Brittany also helps normalize some of the symptoms moms may feel scared to talk about—like intrusive thoughts, irritability, rage, or overwhelming anxiety—and reminds us these experiences are common, treatable, and nothing to be ashamed of.
If you’ve ever questioned whether what you’re feeling is “just part of new motherhood,” this conversation offers clarity, validation, and hope.
In this episode, we cover:
• The difference between baby blues and perinatal mood disorders
• How long baby blues typically last
• Signs it may be time to seek support
• What postpartum anxiety and intrusive thoughts can look like
• How therapy can support healing in the postpartum seasonThis episode is a reminder that getting support is not a sign something is wrong with you—it’s a sign you deserve care, too.
