Acid Horizon

News, Philosophy, Politics, Society & Culture

Emerging from affinities with post-structuralism, abolitionism, biopolitics, communism, critical metaphysics, critical mysticism, and ontological anarchy, Acid Horizon is a philosophy and theory podcast committed to thought in motion and political struggle. While these are our grounding currents, each episode opens out onto a wider constellation: ethics, politics, phenomenology, decolonial thought, queer theory, post-psychoanalysis, disability/crip theory, anarchism, Marxism, feminism, and analyses of the emergence of the new right.

Comprised of a decentralized collective of friends and comrades, Acid Horizon cultivates a terrain of militant inquiry. From readings that span 20th-century French communism to new perspectives on German idealism, the collective has also undertaken forays into aesthetic experimentation, philosophical heresy, and the history of revolt. We seek the concepts and intensities that gesture toward new forms of life.

Acid Horizon pushes theory beyond the academy through live engagements, collaborative reading groups, and collective interventions.

How support for the Luigi Mangione erupted from what remains unfinished in the American Revolution—and the unexpected path to fulfill its promise.

On December 4, 2024, the CEO of America’s largest health insurer was shot dead on a Manhattan sidewalk. At the scene lay bullet casings inscribed with the words “DELAY, DENY, DEPOSE.” Amid the shocking popular celebration of the killing, a nationwide manhunt captured a suspect: Luigi Mangione, a handsome Ivy League graduate from a wealthy background. He was immediately embraced as a hero across America, as if Brian Thompson were the real criminal in a much larger crime; as if the bullets had deposed a tyrant.

Who gets to draw the boundary around a crime scene? The government, or the people?

DEPOSE: Luigi Mangione, the Right to Health, and the Unfinished American Revolution makes a new kind of case for why the healthcare system in America is itself a crime. Connecting the dots between the rise of for-profit health insurance and the nearly 15 million “excess deaths” in America that accompanied it, the authors track the opponents of universal healthcare back to their sources. There, they discover a little-known coverup that has shaped the law itself: the forced disappearance of our natural right to health. Reclaiming that right changes how we understand our history—and reveals what remains unfinished in the American Revolution.

Written by the December 4 Legal Committee, the anonymous collective behind the fund that raised more than $1.5 million for Luigi Mangione's legal defense, Depose takes the American healthcare debate onto the terrain of the fundamental political questions facing all of us today.

Can wasting better solve the biggest planetary challenges?

In his keynote lecture from the two-day event The Excesses of Georges Bataille at Penn State University, Stuart Kendall traces Bataille’s lifelong obsession with time, expenditure, and what he calls “the privileged instant.” The lecture moves from Bataille’s early psychoanalytic writings, through his encounter with the work of Søren Kierkegaard in wartime France, to his late meditations on sustainability and the fate of humanity and all species. Amid his extensive investigations, Bataille reads Nietzsche against Hegel, affirming what the former calls “the ignorance of the future” and transforming that affirmation into the anguished cry that emerges from the abyss of non-knowledge.

This lecture was part of a two-day series of discussions at Penn State featuring other members of the Acid Horizon Research Commons and the broader community of supporters and independent scholars.

What is the relationship between music and radical social change? This book explores their confounding and exciting interrelations in original and engaging ways. Beginning with how capitalism and empire have progressively twisted and atomised our aurally aesthetic experiences over the past century, Alexander Billet examines how social struggles and mass protests challenge the isolation and commodification of music, a challenge which can, in turn, suggest visions of a life lived collectively and on our own terms. Part manifesto, part theoretical exegesis, part love letter to human creativity, Shake the City is a rigorous and poetic plea for our world to be as musical as we deserve it to be.

    Show notes

What if the way we think about everything from gender, race, and class to the very idea of a "thing," rests on a transcendental illusion that mistakes the representation of thought for thinking itself? Henry Somers-Hall joins us to discuss Reading A Thousand Plateaus: Adventures in Nomad Thought, a kind of remix of Deleuze and Guattari that works through the problem of judgment, asks what happens to predicates and measure outside the state form, and turns to Woolf's The Waves and the metallurgist as figures who think below the assemblage. We also take up the claim that the state and the war machine are equiprimordial, what that means for Marxism and anarchism, and why hierarchy has to be constantly warded off rather than overthrown once and for all.

  5. *PATREON EXCLUSIVE* Deleuze and Guattari on Class: Digital Capitalism, Against Workerism, and Reifications of the Worker

    Show notes

Did Deleuze and Guattari have a theory of class? A better question: how did the French philosophers reformulate class and the bourgeoisie in anticipation of digital capitalism unfolding on a global scale? In this Patreon-exclusive discussion, we (Emma, Adam, and Craig) set Deleuze and Guattari's theory of class against workerism and the scapegoating of particular categories of worker within contemporary trends of proletarianization.

Working through Anti-Oedipus chapter three, section ten, and Craig's essay "There Is Only One Class," we unpack decoding, deterritorialization, and the axiomatic. Together, we navigate how capitalism has changed through the proliferation of platforms and an ontology of "profiles," and what the devaluation of porn, music, art, and academic labor means for the future of exploitation. Along the way, we ask what class consciousness could mean after the subject, and why cultural experimentation may be one of the most important sites of political production today.

Can you feel homesick for something that hasn't even disappeared yet? This week Craig and Adam sit down with Dr. Ennan Wu, Wenhan Hu, and Tiger Liu to talk about Chinese Dreamcore, an internet aesthetic built from sound images of old classroom bells and the half-remembered echoes of early milennium schoolyards. We get into anticipatory homesickness, tangping 躺平 (lying flat), and runxue 润学 (the "study" of leaving the country), and what Mark Fisher's hauntology looks like filtered through the dreamcore genre.

What has capital done to us in order to fight off the threat of the oppressed? How can we take a historical materialist approach to understanding the shattering of working class militancy and subjectivity as a political force in the 20th century? What does it mean to be a proletarian in an age when many have much more to lose than their chains?

Adam is joined by Jonas Patrick Marvin to discuss his book "The Breaking of the English Working Class", tracing how the contours of class in England were transformed through the eras of post-war social democracy, towards the ascendency of neoliberalism, and amidst the ruins and hinterlands in which we are organising today.

Were the philosophers of the Kyoto School fascist collaborators, or were they meeting in secret with the Imperial Navy to try to stop a war? Fernando Wirtz and Takeshi Morisato join Craig for a primer on Japan's most influential and most contested philosophical tradition, from Nishida and Tanabe through Miki Kiyoshi and Tosaka Jun. The conversation covers what "nothingness" actually means in Japanese thought and why it isn't Heidegger's, how Miki tried to collapse reason and unreason into a logic of imagination, and what tenkō, or forced ideological conversion, did to a generation of Marxist intellectuals. It closes on the newly surfaced Ōshima Memo and the question of what it costs to think under fascism.

What do we really owe a stranger at the door, and what grounds that obligation? In this episode, Craig and Adam turn to Jacques Derrida's writing on hospitality to unpack Christopher Nolan's new adaptation of The Odyssey, tracing how xenia, the ancient Greek law of guest and host, becomes a lens for thinking through breaking Zeus's law, the massacre of the suitors, and the slow collapse of Bronze Age civilization. The conversation moves through Derrida's distinction between conditional and absolute hospitality, and what it means for a world where borders, asylum claims, and even hospitals have turned the promise of welcome into a catastrophe. It's Nolan's adaptation of Homer's epic read through Derrida: gods, guests, and the violence lurking underneath the oldest tablets of law.

As universities become increasingly governed through financial imperatives, visa regimes, managerial restructurings, and strategic repositioning, what forms of university life become impossible? What survives beyond them? If the university increasingly appears unable to sustain the conditions for collective intellectual life, where does study go? What forms of inquiry exceed the university, and what kinds of institutions – or anti-institutions – might emerge in its wake? To discuss the capitalisation of the university and the future of study, Adam C. Jones of Acid Horizon Research Commons hosts a panel alongside theorists Stevphen Shukaitis, John Preston, Angela McRobbie, and Giovanni Mormont.

Can a theory be so complete, so magistral, that it is dead on arrival?

That's the charge Baudrillard levels at Foucault in 'Forget Foucault', the 1977 book review that got him blacklisted from French theory and earned him the title "shame of the profession" from Deleuze. Cooper Cherry of Machinic Unconscious Happy Hour joins us to work through reversibility, seduction, the potlatch, and what Baudrillard thinks theory should actually be doing. We get into power, seduction, enucleation, courtly love, yearning versus craving, and Baudrillard's theory of fascism.

In this intellectual biography, critic and philosopher Boris Groys turns to the Arthur Rimbaud of modern bureaucracy, Alexandre Kojève, a philosopher of little-known writings and profound influence. Kojève was fascinated with Hegel’s dialectics and with communism and envisioned a universal empire as the end of history. Kojève drew on Buddhism and also proclaimed himself a Stalinist. At the same time, he was one of the creators of a nascent European Union. His concept of the human as something defined by negation and unique among animals in being separated from nature is highly political. It explains why humans can never be fully satisfied by a political system based on their allegedly ‘natural’ rights.

Groys reveals a Kojève with a unique perspective on our political capacities and human condition.

What if fascism isn't a break from capitalism but just capitalism finally being honest about itself? Craig sits down with the podcast's very own Adam C. Jones to unpack his essay "The Promise of Cruelty: Fascism and Social Murder," tracing Engels' concept of social murder through Nietzsche, Baudrillard, and the current far right. We dig into how neoliberalism redistributes cruelty as compensation when it can't redistribute wealth. We also address why today's "simulacral fascism" mobilizes people as consumers and fans rather than as an organized political base. A wide-ranging discussion where Marxist analysis confronts the concepts of Nietzsche, Baudrillard, and Bataille.

Should we all live in communes? AHRC Panel Host Emma Stamm is joined by sociocultural anthropologist Fern Thompsett and environmental humanities scholar Henry Kramer to dig into the commune form, anti-civilization thinking, the reclamation of imagination, and what radical world-building actually looks like on the ground.

The panel pushes back on the romanticized image of communes by arguing that the real work happens in the unglamorous everyday, weeding gardens, sorting recycling, arguing about seedlings, and that these experiments are far more common and historically ingrained than the '60s hippie stereotype suggests. The panelists also take seriously the critiques around race and privilege, reframing communal organization as something that marginalized communities have always practiced under different names and often out of genuine necessity.

This panel was produced as part of Acid Horizon Research Commons' free series of public philosophy panels and lectures. Each season we endeavor to bring rigorous, accessible conversation on ideas from across the humanities and humanities-adjacent disciplines that speak to the current historical conjuncture.

Who owns your dignity, and what does it cost to get it back? Craig, Adam, and Emma work through Pope Leo XIV's encyclical on artificial intelligence, finding beneath its alleged radicalism a familiar liberal kernel: private property, mediated class relations, and a conspicuous absence of anything resembling class struggle. The launch event, staged with cardinals, worldly scholars, and an Anthropic representative, is a mise en scène of the double pincer, simultaneously legitimating AI as an inevitable apparatus of capture while reinstalling a figure of human dignity just fragile enough to need the Church's oversight. The second half of this conversation is available exclusively to patrons at patreon.com/acidhorizon.

If you could go back in time, would you change the past, even if it meant changing who you are? Is existing in time itself traumatic? Is power over time a cinematic endeavour, and what makes a good director an even better time traveller? This week on Acid Horizon we're joined by Kwasu D. Tembo to talk about his latest book Trauma in 21st-Century Time Travel Cinema, discussing the philosophy of time travel in films such as Primer, Timecrimes, and Predestination; as well as how the experience of time transcendentally conditions the structure of the psyche.
