Again With This: Dawson's, Melrose, 90210

Pacey and Joey are going for dinner in notably nice restaurants and trying to kiss when he walks her back to her dorm room, so why haven’t they nailed down exactly what they currently are to each other? Unclear, but here’s what won’t help: Rinaldi firing Pacey’s new assistant because she’s in her forties and suggesting Pacey replace her with the much more nubile Joey. As any of our listeners could probably predict, Joey is incompetent yet entitled even before Pacey’s Mystery Girl from the Christmas party returns, now identified as Sadia Shaw, a financial reporter who’s VERY interested in Pacey’s rapid rise as a broker but who Joey can only see as competition for her maybe man. In Los Angeles, Dawson successfully pitches Heather yet another take on his own autobiography, but questions how much he actually wants to get it made if doing so requires reimagining it as a teen sex comedy with heart that revolves around a stripper. CJ and Jen return just to have an implausible all-day fight about how much or little they’re boning. We’re going upside your head (where your ears are) with our episode on “Sex And Violence”!

Whether or not Felicity wants to acknowledge it, sexual tension has been simmering between her and Noel since they met, so when Noel interrupts their titular game of Boggle to kiss her, it’s not a huge shock to anyone but her. However, Meghan spreading rumors that the two of them are doing far more than smooch have one huge deleterious effect: Elena gets suspicious that “sexual conspiracy” has tainted the dorm’s mini-fridge lottery. Felicity has to deal with the fallout from Meghan’s big mouth while keeping tabs on Ben’s tryout for the UNY track team — something she’s lucky he hasn’t noticed she’s currently obsessed with. Nothing could be simpler or more straightforward than your listening to our episode on “Boggled” right now!

Neither Joey nor Pacey has forgotten their Big K adventure, and the possibilities it opened for their reuniting as a couple. But Joey’s not as ready as Pacey to dive back in, so it’s a good thing they’ve got other business to occupy them. Pacey is called back to Capeside following his father’s medical emergency; Pacey’s new mode of throwing money at his problems rankles Doug, particularly after John treats Pacey like the future of the Witter family and Doug like an old shoe. Dawson is also back home, invited to speak to Mr. Gold’s current film class; a keen kid who wants Dawson’s notes on his short film sends Dawson further down into his career crisis. Joey, meanwhile, has been harassed into babysitting Harley, whose attention to her homework is challenged by the boy in her closet. Here’s something you can do right now: listen to our episode on “That Was Then”!

Noel is organizing a floor party, and Felicity’s expectations for her first college party are stratospheric: she can’t wait to invite Ben, and for him to come that night, and see her, and like the way she looks, and for HER to like the way HE looks, and for them to dance all night and then go back to her room to…talk. Although, as she tells Sally, she has dared to imagine what it might be like to do more than that with “a man” for the first time — something she is so mortified to put on tape that she orders Sally to erase it immediately! Outside of Felicity’s imagination, things are not going so great. The Inorganic Chemistry prof she’s idolized since she used his textbooks in high school is disgusted that she hasn’t been able to find the text for this class. Whenever Felicity mentions Ben to Julie, Felicity can see Julie tense up, despite Julie’s repeated insistence that she and Ben are JUST FRIENDS. Hangs are happening that Felicity isn’t being invited to. Nothing a trip to Bloomingdale’s for a new party dress won’t fix! Probably! Ben is having his own scholastic issues, getting shunted into a drama class where he’s being asked to be vulnerable. It would be very cool if you listened to our episode on “Hot Objects”!

When Pacey picks up a Sure Thing at a networking banquet for which he’s enlisted Joey to be his fake date, he has to stop on the way back to her dorm to get, what else, condoms. Their refusal to respect Kmart’s practices to keep customers from entering in the moments before the store closes leads to their getting locked inside. Since their predicament is a very low priority for the police, Joey and Pacey end up bickering about their relationship history before he calls a truce so that their night doesn’t get even worse. Big box store high jinks ensue: nacho cheese! A wall of TVs! A Gillette Mach 3 threatening Pacey’s precious goatee! And more! Put on some flannel PJs (whether you pay for them is none of our business) and listen to our episode on “Castaways”!

Felicity is just trying to figure out the new normal now that Ben knows why Felicity’s there, Felicity knows Ben never had a brother who died, and Julie knows Felicity isn’t totally over Ben. When she hears that a young man has called the admissions office trying to get a copy of her application essay, she assumes it was Ben trying to get them back on equal footing, and mails him a copy. Then she bounces into a meeting with Pappaleno only to see both her parents already there, and things rapidly go downhill. While Noel is not busy trying to convince Felicity that when he said he had feelings for her he didn’t REALLY mean it, he’s navigating a roommate conflict between Larry (John Cho), who wishes Lewis wouldn’t keep talking in his sleep about buying knives to kill Larry with; and Lewis, who…seems pretty shifty, actually. The FIRST thing you should do now is listen to our episode on “The Last Stand”!

The writers’ ambivalent (if not outright confused) views about excessive drinking are inflicted on us once again as Pacey throws himself a belated housewarming party to celebrate a Best Buy shopping spree. At least one of your co-hosts is disgusted by the portrayal of female characters uniformly disdaining the new giant TV; all the dudes are firmly in favor, including Gus, Emma’s fiancé? Yep, turns out she needs an American husband, and fast, because her visa is no longer valid for reasons we should have figured out back when she was hanging around the aquarium every day. Joey is determined to drink away her heartache over Eddie’s departure; Jen is ready to be sober out of respect for CJ, so she’s horrified when she hears that Pacey offered him a drink and he took it. At the other end of the sobriety spectrum, Audrey’s still in rehab in L.A. Dawson comes to visit, not only cloddishly arriving without so much as an Us Weekly but then forgetting whom he’s there for as soon as she spots one of her fellow patients: a producer named Toni Stark. Dawson would have to be made of iron (man) not to parlay this chance sighting into a networking opportunity, right??? Join us as we get down and dirty about “Clean And Sober”!

Felicity Porter (Keri Russell) is at her commencement, realizing she’s not as happy about the life her parents have mapped out for her: doing all her schooling at Stanford to become a doctor, exactly like her dad. So when she bravely asks her crush, Ben (Scott Speedman) to become the second person to sign her senior yearbook and finds out he’s going to “New York” for college, she finds her acceptance letter to the same school and decides to enroll there too. When she runs into him again on campus in the fall, his reaction is her first sign that her impulsive decision isn’t going to pan out exactly the way she might have hoped when she made it. We’re telling you all about everyone she meets — and how she frames it to her audio cassette tape pen pal Sally — in our episode on the Felicity pilot!

We’re off this week but we bring you three Again With Again With This episodes from the club vault.

AWAWT 253: Let’s Watch Joshua Jackson In Cruel Intentions!

How to reinvent Les Liaisons Dangereuses for the late 20th century Youthquake moment? Set it among Upper East Side high school brats, and throw in a couple of stars from The WB!

AWAWT 254: Let’s Watch Robin Dunne In Cruel Intentions 2!

A TV iteration of Cruel Intentions, Manchester Prep, was planned for FOX’s 1999-2000 primetime schedule…until Rupert Murdoch (allegedly) had the project sacked for being too crass (!), at which time it was reworked as a prequel, Cruel Intentions 2, and everything about it is…number two: the casting, the timeline, the geography, the wardrobe, and Robin “AJ” Dunne as Valmont makes Ryan Phillippe look like Jon Hamm. This is possibly the crappiest show-verse property we’ve ever contemplated, and we’re talking about that, plus early TWoP days, Some Kind Of Wonderful, and “frisky twins” (ew). Listen now!

AWAWT 255: Let’s Watch Kerr Smith In Cruel Intentions 3!

So it’s come to this: a Cruel Intentions sequel with none of the original talent attached. (Not even poor old Pierre Choderlos de Laclos gets a credit!) After Kathryn has ruined the family with her antics in New York, her cousin Cassidy is forced to lie low at a college in Santa Barbara, where she and her frenemy and sparring partner Jason (Kerr Smith!) simply can’t stop betting on sex. How does this entry slyly cross over with both American Psycho and Sex & The City? We’ll tell you everything important! …Which admittedly isn’t much.

After Joey found Audrey unconscious at the end of the previous episode, she got in touch with the Liddells offscreen, and arrangements have been made for Audrey to enter a rehab program in the Los Angeles area. Except, whoops, no one thought this person deep in substance misuse disorder might pretend to head for the airport, then actually find a karaoke bar, bring a guy named Bob (Seth Rogen!) back to a local hotel room, and hide out. Since Eddie has decided to try to enroll in that writers’ workshop and, conveniently, drive himself across the country that very night, Joey volunteers him to drive Audrey too — something Audrey only agrees to if they also bring Bob. Since Joey learned nothing from this flight risk the first time, predictable mayhem ensues. Dawson is way out over his skis on reshoots, enduring open disrespect from his DP and Natasha and threats from Heather (whose fault this is, honestly). And when Grams clashes with an entirely offscreen Mr. Smalls, Jen decides the answer is to set her up with CJ’s widowed Uncle Bill (Geoffrey Lewis! …You’ll know him when you see him). Look waaaaaay down for our latest episode: we’ve struck Rock! Bottom!!!

Following her sheepish west coast reunion with Dawson, Audrey returns to Boston. Smoothing things over is pretty easy with MOST of her friends, but Emma and the other Hell’s Belles need more convincing, especially with a gig opening for Loudermilk just hours away. Audrey convinces Emma to give her another chance, and probably really believes all her promises about turning over a new leaf when she makes them! Spending more time with Joey convinces Harley that she has to intervene between her and Eddie, but credit to her: the crazy caper she comes up with to get him back to Hell’s Kitchen actually does work…briefly. And Pacey dares to attend another party with Rinaldi: it seems like Pacey’s frictionless rise through the ranks at the brokerage is continuing, though a Mystery Girl (Sarah Shahi!) observing him warns him to be on his guard. There’s no wrong way to enjoy our episode on “All The Right Moves”!

We’re following the teens of Dawson’s Creek through each day of a particularly eventful week. Joey, back at school after the holidays, is leaving dozens of messages for Eddie that are going unreturned, and she’s not the only one looking for him: Harley’s back, too. Jen has finally been worn down on volunteering at The Stand, and she must really be committed if she’s letting CJ train her at this stage in their relationship; meanwhile, David and Jack are taking the Big Step of getting tested for STIs together. Dawson and Todd return to L.A., where the latter is not quite ready to receive fearless feedback from studio executive Larry Newman (Paul Gleason!). And when Pacey runs into Emma there, the aquarium becomes the site for the two to get to know each other much better than ever before. Today is the day for our episode on “Day Out Of Days”!

It’s the holidays, but not the peace on earth/goodwill to men kind. Joey weirds Eddie out by inviting him back to Capeside, which he declines, opening the door for Joey to make the same invitation to Audrey after Audrey drunkenly misses her flight back to Los Angeles. Pacey can’t wait to drive his new Beemer up to the Witter house and rub his family’s collective nose in all his financial success. Dawson decides to continue ignoring his hurt over Natasha’s possible infidelity by inviting her to Capeside…and Todd also comes, possibly just so there’s someone to hit on Gale? Too bad for Jack spending his holiday offscreen with the McPhees we never see anymore: he missed a lot of Merry Mayhem, but you shouldn’t — listen to our episode all about it now!

Finals are almost over, but the universe is punishing Joey by scheduling Hetson’s after nearly everyone else is done, and she can’t find a quiet place to study. Eddie’s offer to borrow his apartment while he’s at work is both generous and maybe a little strategic, since they do end up fooling around in a naked way that’s so tiring Joey falls back to sleep and misses most of the exam. As we all know, academic desperation typically doesn’t bring out her best, but…just kidding, she’s terrible this time too. Todd’s movie has its own “Drew Barrymore in Scream“-type cameo artist: a movie star named Max Winter who is working with Spielberg next. Dawson gets way too jealous about it, possibly with just cause. Pacey’s boiler room is having a holiday party, so he invites Emma to come and even insists on buying her a new dress to wear for the occasion! There’s just one little thing about this particular party that he probably should have made sure to tell her before she showed up for it. Let’s all come together for our episode on “Everything Put Together Falls Apart”!

Before Todd got into the flop movie business, he was a very well regarded music video director, which is how he knows No Doubt; that they are keeping tabs on him enough to give him like a dozen comps is kind of a surprise, but sure, why the hell not. Dawson gives them to Jen to distribute. Joey and Eddie get a pair, Eddie discovering while Joey hard-sells him that she expects their first date to be a hang with all her friends, one of whom was kicking glass at him not very long ago. Jack and David get a pair, and David’s good old friend CJ also gets one after Jen literally runs into him in the record store and can’t sense the palpable tension between him and Audrey. And Pacey gets one because Jen thinks if he and Audrey just got back into proximity with each other, they’d work out all their issues. Some people forget their tickets; others misread them; shocking secrets are revealed…and we’re telling you all about it in our Hella Good new episode!

As we know, Audrey is not doing so great. But since she’s being louder and crazier than ever before instead of talking to anyone about it, no one can quite tell exactly what’s going on until she starts pounding shots ahead of her latest Hell’s Belles gig and getting nasty to Eddie while Joey stands by uselessly. Actually, one person can tell what’s going on: CJ, and this is the episode where we find out why. Freeman announces to the class that his new book has earned him a guest lecturer gig in Chicago, but before he goes, he has a bunch of things he’d like to not quite say to Jack. When Pacey and the rest of the aspiring stockbrokers pass their Series 7 exams, Rinaldi takes them all on a whirlwind trip to New Orleans to be disgusting in a whole other time zone. Grab your passport for our episode on “Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell”!

It’s Halloween, and what do you know: the stage where Todd’s shooting his movie has spooooooky lore. Never mind that this is clearly all taking place in a warehouse that was MAYBE built in the mid-70s: a flash of an old screen test in some of Todd’s dailies leads him and Natasha to tell Dawson the story of Melanie Ray, a 50s movie star whose co-star husband found out she was having an affair with her director and strangled her to death on camera. “That sucks,” says Dawson, and probably regrets his understatement when he starts seeing someone who looks a lot like Melanie flitting around the stage, eluding his attempts to chase her down. Is it just a costume party guest paying tribute to the late Melanie, or her actual ghost?! Speaking of the costume party: Pacey and Audrey also attend, dressed as Sid and Nancy, but the camaraderie of a couples costume can’t paper over the widening cracks in their relationship. Also present but almost entirely in their own silo are Jack and Jen, the former convincing the latter to invite CJ. When he shows up with a friend Jen immediately decides is not just gay but CJ’s boyfriend, Jack hatches a plan for them to split the two up and figure out their deal, but ends up wishing he hadn’t. Joey negotiates Eddie’s re-admission to Hetson’s class by agreeing to babysit his daughter that night, assuming she’s the 5-year-old in the photo on his desk. In fact, she’s a crabby teenager who’s not happy Hetson’s dumped her on a stranger so he can go on a date instead of honoring their Halloween tradition and taking her to a scary movie. Once she meets Eddie, she manipulates him into glomming on to their plans, but if you remember how similar plans went when Brandon Walsh and Emily Valentine weren’t quite a couple yet but still ended up looking after a kid on Halloween…well, things take a similar turn here. Two living girls have brought you an episode on “Living Dead Girl”: listen!

Two pairs of sparring partners are still trapped in emotional tar pits: Joey can’t stop being hostile to Eddie, while even the Series 7-obsessed Pacey can’t help noticing that Audrey seems preoccupied by something, though he’s got so much studying to do that when she says she doesn’t want to talk about it, he’s only too happy not to press the matter. Joey is shaken out of her assumptions about Eddie when he defends her from another attack by Hetson, and Hetson turns his acid on Eddie instead, hinting at a secret Eddie probably doesn’t want everyone to know. Meanwhile, Audrey’s singing in Pacey’s shower convinces Emma that Audrey could front Emma’s punk band in its début performance. Todd is less concerned than Dawson that the slasher flick is already days behind schedule, though that changes when Heather the studio executive descends on the set to yell at him and threaten to fire Natasha. (Remember Heather? Played by Nicole Bilderback? S05 premiere?) Todd is apparently unable to defend his own choices, so it’s a good thing the 19-year-old CHILD he currently employs as his assistant is there to fix everything. Jack gets his first paper back in Freeman’s class, and wonders whether his unimpressive grade might have been a few notches higher if he’d positively responded to Freeman’s overture at the end of the last episode. We’re talking about all the false faces in our episode on “The Impostors”!

We’re off this week but we bring you two Again With Again With This episodes from the club vault.

AWAWT 201: Let’s Watch Michelle Williams In The Station Agent!

Peter Dinklage plays a train enthusiast recovering from potentially terminal loneliness. An adorable blonde library staffer helps him on his journey.

AWAWT 246: Let’s Watch Michelle Williams In Dick!

In addition to a bunch of thinkpieces about the 25th anniversary of Richard Nixon’s resignation, 1999 also brought us Dick (lol) — in which teen BFFs played by Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst bumble innocently through a constitutional crisis, while wearing a series of excellent period outfits. Should you revisit Dick(snerk) — or try Dick for the first time (heh)? Listen to our deep discussion now! (…haha)

Dawson is back on set in Boston for the first day of shooting, and things aren’t going great. For one thing, Todd fired the PA who was supposed to pick up the leading lady at the airport, and someone who was already “a handful” to begin with doesn’t get any more mellow after being made to wait an hour. Back at Hell’s Kitchen, Eddie goes from a lecture about On The Road from Joey to a huge catering order. Could it be from– But no, it couldn’t. COULD IT?! (It is.) Pacey is very responsibly begging off a night with Audrey to study for his exam when Rinaldi orders him to come out clubbing with some of the big bosses. Audrey, Jen, and Jack are on their way to a house party when they round a corner just as some guy is bellowing about hitting up a strip club next. Could it…okay, yeah, it is. Lucky for Jack, this doesn’t change his plans, because what might be waiting for HIM at the party is destiny. We’ve given you exactly what you deserve: our episode on “Instant Karma!.”
