2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid & 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV, plus Stellantis recovery, GM hybrids, strong October car sales & Honda on tariffs
Season 1, Episode 242
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, host Jack Nerad is joined by guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo for a packed episode of industry news and road tests. They discuss Stellantis’s improving North American results, strong projected October sales, General Motors’ long-overdue move into hybrids, and Honda’s warning about potential 50% tariffs on Canadian-built vehicles. Matt delivers a first drive of the all-new 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid, while Jack tests the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus. Special guest Derek Joyce, product expert, joins to discuss the 2027 Hyundai Tucson. Listener question of the week comes from Steve in Tacoma, Washington.
🚗 Matt DeLorenzo’s Road Test: 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid
Nissan brings back a hybrid Rogue for 2027, this time as a series hybrid (e-Power). Twin electric motors (one per axle) provide all-wheel drive and 225 total horsepower, while a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine acts purely as a generator with no mechanical connection to the wheels and no CVT. The result is EV-like smoothness and quietness, with the engine only becoming noticeable under hard acceleration. EPA estimates are 40 mpg city / 36 highway / 38 combined. The SR trim tested features Zero Gravity seats, a 14.3-inch screen, contemporary styling, and more than 30 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. Pricing starts around $36,000 for the SR; SV and Platinum trims follow. Both hosts found it a strong, practical compact SUV that should help revive Nissan’s fortunes against rivals such as the RAV4, CR-V, and Santa Fe.
⚡ Jack Nerad’s Road Test: 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus
Mazda’s three-row plug-in hybrid sits at the top of the lineup and blends luxury, performance, and electrification. The system pairs an inline-six with electric assistance for 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, sent through an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive with a rear-biased feel. Electric-only range is rated at 26 miles; combined MPGe is 56. 0-60 comes in about six seconds despite a roughly 5,200-pound curb weight. The Premium Plus trim offers Nappa leather, heated/ventilated seats (including heated second-row captain’s chairs), adaptive LED lighting, and a firm, engaging chassis that prioritizes Zoom-Zoom dynamics. Cargo space and third-row room are a bit tighter than some rivals, and the modest EV range requires consistent plugging in to maximize benefits. At around $60,000 fully loaded, it delivers understated premium character without a traditional luxury badge.
📈 Stellantis Signs of Recovery
Stellantis (Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler) posted a still-substantial $505 million quarterly loss but showed clear improvement. Ram sales rose 30 percent (Ram 1500 up 73 percent, helped by V8 availability), Dodge Durango climbed 14 percent, and Chrysler Pacifica gained 6 percent. The company is gaining North American market share as truck demand rebounds and regulatory pressure on fuel economy and pure EVs eases, allowing it to better amortize earlier EV investments.
📊 Strong October Sales Outlook
Cox Automotive forecasts U.S. new-vehicle sales of 1.38 million units in October—up 7.2 percent year-over-year and 3.6 percent from September—pushing the full-year seasonally adjusted annual rate toward 16.1 million. Strength is concentrated in more affordable subcompact and compact SUVs/crossovers plus compact cars, with midsize SUVs also up about 9 percent. Consumers appear willing to replace aging vehicles despite broader economic concerns that are largely unfounded.
🔄 GM Finally Adds Hybrids
After years of prioritizing pure EVs (and canceling the Chevy Volt), General Motors announced gasoline-electric hybrids for many crossovers and SUVs, starting with the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia. The move fills a competitive gap. Rivals already offer hybrids that add roughly $1,500 to the sticker while delivering meaningfully better fuel economy. GM’s U.S. market share has slipped from 17.4 percent to 16.6 percent in recent months; hybrids should help stop further erosion even if they never dominate volume.
🇨🇦 Honda Warns on Canadian Tariffs
Honda Senior Vice President Jennifer Thomas called a potential jump to 50 percent U.S. tariffs on Canadian-built vehicles and steel “catastrophic.” Honda has significant Canadian production feeding the U.S. market. The company is already shifting some Mexican output northward in response to other tariff pressures and faces a delicate political balancing act with the Canadian government.
🎙️ Special Guest
Derek Joyce, product expert on the 2027 Hyundai Tucson, discusses the recently introduced model that was unveiled in New York.
📩 Listener Question of the Week
Steve from Tacoma, Washington asks: With new-vehicle prices remaining high, would you rather buy a brand-new economy car or a three-year-old luxury vehicle for the same money? Matt leans toward the new compact for warranty, latest safety tech, and features (especially if the used example is not CPO). Jack is tempted by the used luxury car for the driving experience and image, noting that the choice is ultimately personal and emotional.

Special episode detailing North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year testing directly from the test center in Ann Arbor, Michigan
Season 1, Episode 343
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, host Jack Nerad and frequent guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo record a special on-location episode from North American Car of the Year testing in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They explain the awards process, discuss the state of the auto industry heading into the 2027 model year, and share first impressions of the strong Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year fields after driving candidates back-to-back.
🏆 North American Car of the Year Explained
Matt, a founding juror, outlines the annual program that brings eligible new vehicles together for efficient comparison drives. Awards cover Car of the Year, Truck of the Year, and Utility of the Year (added 15 years ago as SUVs dominated). The jury of roughly 50 diverse journalists from print, broadcast, web, and influencer backgrounds pays annual dues and judges independently on merit. This year’s field is heavily weighted toward utilities (a full dozen), with far fewer cars and trucks.
📈 State of the Industry
As backdrop to the awards, Jack and Matt note major flux as EVs developed under earlier mandates and subsidies arrive amid changed policy and economics. Batteries remain costly; pure-EV range and price still limit broader adoption. They see growing strength in hybrids (including series-hybrids like the Nissan Rogue) and continued ICE relevance, especially for trucks and road-trip needs. Matt’s 10-year outlook: roughly 25% pure EV (a win if achieved), 60%+ hybrid, and the balance mostly ICE for heavy-duty use. Electrification of drivetrains is the clearer trend than an all-EV future.
🚙 North American Utility of the Year Standouts
Rivian R2
Highly anticipated smaller EV SUV with hot-hatch-inspired design (VW investment influence). Quick and quiet, but both found the ride harsh (“buckboard”) and the switchless interior frustrating (difficult mirror and steering adjustments via screen/thumbwheels). Still not fully polished.
Volvo EX60
Standout EV. Quiet, quick, comfortable, and compliant. Improved screen layout and strong overall execution; priced more attractively than the struggling EX30.
Audi SQ9 / Q9
Polished three-row luxury SUV. Excellent suspension tuning, strong V8 character, thoughtful mix of screens and conventional controls, advanced lighting features, and available second-row captain’s chairs. Expensive but highly refined.
Volkswagen Atlas
Refined large three-row competitor; successive generations keep improving.
Jeep Recon
Electric trail-rated Wrangler-style SUV with removable doors/roof and familiar physical controls. Cool, distinctive styling and capable off-road character, though range is limited (around 200+ miles).
Kia Telluride
Terrific, comfortable three-row with hybrid option (~30 mpg). Strong value.
Kia Seltos
Affordable (roughly $25k–$35k), feature-packed, sharper and slightly larger than before; strong road presence.
Kia EV3
Electric counterpart with range/price trade-offs (shorter range on base battery).
Other candidates mentioned include BMW iX3, Chevrolet Bolt (ending after 2027), Nissan Rogue hybrid, Jeep Cherokee, and Mazda CX-5.
🛻 Truck of the Year Field
Nominees include Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram 1500 TRX (Hemi performance version), and the highly anticipated Slate entry-level electric truck. The Slate was not present, disappointing given strong jury interest in its affordability and concept.

2026 Toyota Prius Nightshade, 2026 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, plus North American Utility of the Year preview, 2027 Volkswagen ID.Tiguan
Season 1, Episode 341
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad is joined by guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo (Chris Teague is off). They deliver two Toyota road tests, discuss Volkswagen’s upcoming electric ID.Tiguan, the return of the Nissan Rogue hybrid, and several intriguing North American Utility of the Year contenders, including the Rivian R2, Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV, Toyota Highlander EV, and Jeep Recon.
🛻 Matt DeLorenzo Road Test: Toyota Tundra TRD Pro
Matt samples Toyota’s full-size off-road pickup. The TRD Pro rides on 33-inch Falcon Wildpeak tires with a near-two-inch factory lift, Fox shocks, and rugged suspension. Its 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 delivers 438 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque, with towing capacity over 11,000 pounds. A 10-speed automatic, limited-slip differential, high/low ranges, and rock-crawling mode add capability. Matt notes the tall climb into the cabin, strong low-end torque, compliant ride, 14-inch touchscreen, and eye-catching Wave Maker Blue paint with camo-texture black accents. Real-world fuel economy hovered around 16 mpg. As-tested price exceeded $77,000.
🚗 Jack Nerad Road Test: Toyota Prius Nightshade Plug-in Hybrid
Jack evaluates the stylish Prius Nightshade PHEV. It offers roughly 39–40 miles of electric range, strong hybrid efficiency, refined driving manners, and practical features including soft-touch heated seats, heated steering wheel, available 12.3-inch screen, and solid safety tech. Jack and Matt both praise the looks and efficiency but note the steeply raked roofline makes rear (and sometimes front) access challenging. Base Nightshade pricing starts near $37,000–$38,000; the tested example stickered at $41,304. A conventional Corolla Hybrid is flagged as a more practical, less expensive alternative for some buyers.
🔋 2027 Volkswagen ID.Tiguan
VW is replacing the underperforming ID.4 with an all-electric Tiguan, first in Europe then North America. The move aims to leverage the popular Tiguan nameplate, share body panels, and boost volume at the Chattanooga plant after ID.4 sales fell far short of projections.
🔄 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid
Nissan returns the Rogue hybrid with a series-hybrid system (engine acts as a generator; electric motors drive the wheels). Expected ~38 mpg combined, 225 hp, one-pedal driving capability, and pricing starting around $35,000–$36,000 for the SR. A smaller battery keeps costs closer to conventional hybrids.
🏆 North American Utility of the Year Contenders
Jack and Matt preview several vehicles expected in the NACTOY Utility category:
• Rivian R2 – more accessible midsize two-row EV SUV (~330-mile range, starting ~$57–58k)
• Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV – range-extended EV with ~150 miles pure-electric range and strong power
• 2027 Toyota Highlander EV – all-electric three-row model
• Jeep Recon – trail-rated electric off-roader (large battery, ~222-mile range)📩 Listener Question of the Week
Gwendolyn from Spokane, Washington asks: “Why do modern vehicles seem more expensive to repair than older ones?”
Jack and Matt point to increased electronics, sealed modules, complex safety and emissions systems, and sensor-heavy designs that raise parts and diagnostic costs. -

Testarama: Toyota bZ, Honda Prelude, GMC Acadia Denali & Lexus RX Hybrid, plus where is the EV market going?
Season 1, Episode 339
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad is joined by guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo for a road-test-heavy episode. They review the returning Honda Prelude hybrid coupe, the refreshed Toyota bZ electric compact SUV, the luxurious GMC Acadia Denali, and the Lexus RX hybrid. Matt also shares insights on the current state of the EV market, battery costs, and why pure electrics still face major hurdles. Our listener question focuses on EV battery degradation.
⚡ Matt DeLorenzo Road Test: Honda Prelude
The Honda Prelude returns as a stylish personal sporty coupe rather than a hardcore performance car. Hybrid powertrain delivers 200 hp and 232 lb-ft with seamless direct-drive feel (no rubber-band CVT sensation) and simulated shift points. Sleek two-door design, supportive front seats, and engaging manners make it a refined two-plus-two. Attractive alternative to hot hatches for those seeking style and efficiency.
🚙 Jack Nerad Road Test: 2026 GMC Acadia Denali
The midsize three-row Acadia in Denali trim offers truckish SUV styling, strong interior space, premium appointments, and excellent wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity. Power comes from a 2.5-liter turbo four producing 328 hp with an 8-speed automatic and available AWD. Pricing starts near $65,000 and can approach $70,000 fully loaded. Comfortable and well-equipped, though questions remain about long-term turbo durability in a vehicle of this size.
🚗 Matt DeLorenzo Road Test: Toyota bZ
Toyota relaunches the former bZ4X simply as the bZ with major improvements. Larger 74-kWh battery delivers over 300 miles of range (up from ~235), more power (221 hp FWD / up to 338 hp AWD), softer interior materials, and a lower entry price around $34,000–$37,000. Native NACS charging, strong real-world charging speeds, and competitive cargo space. Some quirks remain with the high-mounted instrument display, but overall a much more compelling small EV SUV.
🔋 Jack Nerad Road Test: 2026 Lexus RX Hybrid
Discussion centers on the RX hybrid, including the 450h Plus plug-in, as a benchmark luxury crossover known for refinement, strong resale, and hybrid efficiency. Jack and Matt recommend the hybrid versions for the best ownership experience in the class.
🎙️ Special EV Deep Dive with EV Expert & Author Matt DeLorenzo
Matt discusses his book on affordable EVs and the current market reality. Battery costs still create a significant price gap versus gas vehicles. Pure EV adoption has slowed; hybrids and range-extenders (like Scout plans) are filling the practicality gap. Compact electric trucks such as Ford’s Fathom and the Slate may find niches, but full-size electric pickups face payload and cost challenges.
📩 Listener Question of the Week
William from Seattle, Washington asks: “How much battery degradation should owners expect after five years in EVs?”

2027 Chevrolet Bolt & 2026 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail, plus potential Chinese vehicle ban, self-driving presents new risks & more.
Season 1, Episode 340
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad and co-host Chris Teague deliver fresh road tests of the revived 2027 Chevrolet Bolt and the rugged 2026 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail. They also examine the Senate push to ban Chinese-linked vehicles and Lexus’s expansion into luxury yachts. Are improved self-driving systems actually a potential safety menace? The New York Times thinks so, and we’ll offer our opinions. In addition, special guest Hiren Patel, Nissan Design manager, joins the show to discuss the all-new 2027 Rogue Hybrid.
🚗 Jack Nerad’s Road Test: 2026 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail
The most off-road capable LX blends Land Cruiser-derived hardware with a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 hybrid producing 457 hp and 583 lb-ft. This big bad boy will do 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, deliver 8,000-pound towing, and offer 20 mpg combined. Locking front and rear differentials, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and Crawl Control deliver serious trail ability while the cabin remains fully luxurious with massaging seats and Mark Levinson audio. Base price is a lofty $115,735, while as-tested will set you back $119,311. The is a locked-and-loaded full-size luxury SUV for both pavement and adventure.
⚡ Chris Teague’s Road Test: 2027 Chevrolet Bolt
Chevrolet has revived the Bolt as an affordable front-wheel-drive EV with a 210-hp single motor and 65-kWh LFP battery. EPA range is 262 miles, and DC fast charging now goes 10-80% in about 25 minutes. A native NACS port, 11.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, and available Super Cruise might delight, but no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is disappointing. The Bolt LT starts at $28,995 including destination, and that will buy you a practical daily-use EV focused on range, fast charging, and accessible pricing.
📈 Chinese Carmakers Could Claim Over 10% of U.S. Market
Research firm Mobility Global forecasts Chinese brands could reach 11 percent of the U.S. market by 2038 (about 1.7 million vehicles annually) if barriers ease—though current tariffs and connectivity rules keep them largely locked out.
🤖 Self-Driving Cars: Better Technology, Bigger Risks?
A New York Times report warns of potential “automation complacency.” As the self-driving systems improve, drivers may actually rely on them. But most current tech still requires full driver attention, and comprehensive safety data on the potential issue remains limited, so why not predict doom?
🌏 Asian Brands Set to Top Half of U.S. Sales
Cox Automotive predicts Asian automakers will account for more than half of U.S. sales for a second straight quarter, while the Detroit Three fall to a record-low share near 36 percent. Full-year vehicle forecast rises to 16.1 million units.
🛥️ Lexus Launches Luxury Yacht Globally
Lexus expands the 68-foot LY680 yacht beyond Japan, with overseas deliveries underway and a Fort Lauderdale boat-show debut planned. Twin Volvo Penta engines, three cabins, and Lexus design values extend the brand to the water.
🎙️ Special Guest
Hiren Patel, Nissan Design manager, joins Jack and Chris to discuss the all-new 2027 Rogue Hybrid.

2027 Genesis GV80, 2026 Toyota Corolla FX, plus GM sodium-ion batteries, used-car prices increase, new 2027 Lexus NX details & more.
Season 1, Episode 337
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad and co-host Chris Teague deliver fresh road tests of the 2026 Genesis GV80 and the limited-edition 2026 Toyota Corolla FX. They also examine GM’s push into domestic sodium-ion batteries, the latest climb in used-vehicle prices, and President Trump’s comments on possible Chinese auto plants in the United States. The pair detail the hybrid-only 2027 Lexus NX and Bristol Cars’ return with the formerly moribund Fighter supercar. Special guest Alisha Bumgarner, Goodyear tire expert, joins the show.
⚡ Jack Nerad Road Test: 2026 Toyota Corolla FX
The limited-edition Corolla FX hatchback mixes retro styling cues with modern efficiency. Based on the SE, it features 18-inch gloss-white wheels, sport mesh grille, and unique badges. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder (169 hp) and CVT deliver 8.2-second 0-60 times and 33 mpg combined. Supportive sport seats, heated fronts, and solid materials define the cabin. Cargo space is modest but practical. With a base price $26,780; as-tested $29,132, it delivers distinctive, efficient manners with head-turning looks at an accessible price. But does it deliver enough fun?
🚗 Chris Teague Road Test: 2026 Genesis GV80
The Genesis GV80 is a stylish luxury midsize SUV that prioritizes design, a lavish interior, and value. Its distinctive exterior, quilted leather, large 27-inch display, and strong standard tech and safety features are all praiseworthy. For 2026 it adds a more affordable rear-drive 2.5T (300 hp) version, expanded third-row availability, and Terrain mode. The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 that Chris tested makes 375 hp and it features a comfortable ride and spacious cabin. Pricing ranges from $59,195 to $91,545.
🔋 GM Targets 2029 for U.S. Sodium-Ion Battery Production
General Motors is developing sodium-ion cells for commercial production around 2029, initially for stationary energy storage. The effort emphasizes domestic materials such as U.S. soda ash and aims to reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains. Partnership with Peak Energy and new Michigan lab facilities support the plan.
📈 Used-Vehicle Prices Hit Highest Average Since 2022
Average used-vehicle listing prices reached $27,239 in August, the highest monthly figure in more than three years according to Cox Automotive. Budget models under $15,000 face the tightest supply, with inventory down nearly 26 percent year over year.
🇺🇸 Trump Open to Chinese Auto Plants in U.S.—With Conditions
President Trump said he might support Chinese car companies building plants in the United States if they hire American workers. Existing Commerce Department rules still bar most Chinese-connected vehicles from the U.S. market starting with model year 2027, and industry groups continue pushing for permanent bans.
⚡ 2027 Lexus NX Goes Fully Hybrid
The updated NX becomes a hybrid- and plug-in-hybrid-only lineup with improved efficiency, a more rigid chassis, sharper steering, and a standard 14-inch touchscreen. The plug-in version offers more than 40 miles of electric range on select grades. Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 is standard.
🏎️ Bristol Cars Returns by Completing the Legendary Fighter
British marque Bristol is back, finishing the long-unfinished gull-wing Fighter supercar on an original chassis. The 8.0-liter V-10 produces 525–600 hp with a claimed top speed up to 210 mph. Four additional chassis will be completed to customer order.

2026 Land Rover Defender 130 V8, 206 Chevrolet Trax, plus Tesla's China recalls, Volvo safety alerts, 2027 Kia Sportage pricing & more
Season 1, Episode 335
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad and co-host Chris Teague deliver fresh road tests of the 2026 Land Rover Defender 130 V8 and the affordable 2026 Chevrolet Trax. They also examine Tesla’s large-scale China door-release campaign and its implications for U.S. owners, Volvo’s expanded connected safety alerts, Kia’s 2027 Niro and Sportage pricing, Mitsubishi’s Momentum 2030 growth plan, and Chevrolet’s refreshed High Country trim on the Traverse.
🚗 Jack Nerad’s Road Test: 2026 Chevrolet Trax
The Chevy Trax is a sharp-looking, roomy subcompact SUV that punches above its price. The 1.2-liter turbo three-cylinder offers 137 hp and its six-speed automatic helps deliver more than adequate daily performance. A quiet cabin, car-like ride, generous rear legroom, and 25.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats make the little SUV worthy of a look. The LT trim pricing starts around $23,200, and the as-tested price of the vehicle Jack reviews was $27,975. In all, the Trax delivers strong value with modern tech and solid safety features at one of the lowest prices in the segment.
🚗 Chris Teague’s Road Test: 2026 Land Rover Defender 130 V8
The longest Land Rover Defender seats up to eight across three rows while keeping the iconic boxy look and serious off-road hardware. The P400 mild-hybrid 3.0-liter inline-six delivers 395 hp and 406 lb-ft; the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 P500 test vehicle makes 493 hp and 450 lb-ft. Permanent AWD, two-speed transfer case, and standard air suspension that provides up to 11.5 inches of ground clearance are among the Defender 130’s top features. Pricing starts in the low-to-mid $70,000s, but our test vehicle was well into six figures.
📊 Tesla China Recalls Raise U.S. Safety Questions
Chinese regulators have ordered Tesla to fix emergency door releases on nearly 3 million vehicles and update driver-attention systems on more than 2.7 million Model 3 and Y cars. The actions put NHTSA on notice. U.S. owners should stay current on software, learn mechanical release locations, and monitor the safety agency for any parallel action.
📡 Volvo Expands Connected Safety Network
Volvo is adding large animal, vulnerable road user, roadwork, and accident ahead alerts to its connected safety system, turning more than a million vehicles into a real-time hazard network that can share data across brands. Spatial Audio for Apple CarPlay also arrives via over-the-air update on EX90 models with Bowers & Wilkins audio.
💰 Kia Sets 2027 Niro and Sportage Pricing
The 2027 Niro starts at $29,890 for the LX and is all-hybrid. The gas Sportage X-Line now includes a panoramic sunroof and smart power liftgate as standard. Both models receive styling, tech, and refinement updates.
🚙 Mitsubishi Details Momentum 2030 Growth Plan
Mitsubishi is expanding its U.S. lineup to six vehicles by 2027, adding a new Eclipse Sportback EV, a rugged Outlander variant, and may have plans to re-enter the pickup segment via collaboration with Nissan. The strategy focuses on electrification, product renewal, and dealer growth.
✨ Chevrolet Refreshes High Country for 2027 Traverse
The top High Country trim gains a bolder exterior with new badging, Tritan Satin accents, and 22-inch wheels, plus richer interior materials and an interior camera for Cabin Glance. The 2.5-liter turbo with 328 hp and up to 98 cubic feet of cargo remain part of the Traverse program.

2026 Toyota Crown Signia XLE, 2027 Kia Telluride plus JD Power tech study, AI cabin agents, Jeep Smoky Mountain edition, all-new Genesis GV90
Season 1, Episode 334
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, host Jack Nerad delivers a fresh road test of the 2026 Toyota Crown Signia XLE, a vehicle that’s in Chris’s sweetspot, while co-host Chris Teague offers his take on the 2027 Kia Telluride hybrid. In the news segment, Jack and Chris dive into the latest JD Power Tech Experience Index findings, the rise of in-car AI agents, and Jeep’s new Wrangler Smoky Mountain Edition. They also take a long look at Genesis’s first full-size electric flagship GV90 — Will it find a market? Special guest Jenny Walker, Goodyear off-road tires expert, joins the show as well.
🚗 Jack Nerad’s Road Test: 2026 Toyota Crown Signia XLE
The Crown Signia is a stylish hybrid station wagon and spiritual successor to the late, lamented Toyota Venza. The Crown Signia’s XLE trim pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with electric motors for 240 hp, and it boasts electronic AWD and 38 mpg combined (34.5 mpg observed on the highway). Plush, quiet ride, near-Lexus interior with heated/ventilated seats, 12.3-inch screens, and strong cargo space (25 cu ft behind rear seats, 66 cu ft folded) are among its many niceties. With a base price of $44,390 (as-tested $47,199), you can have a Lexus-like level of refinement and efficiency for less than you’d expect. It’s one of the smartest buys in the market right now, Jack opines.
🚗 Chris Teague’s Road Test: 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid
The all-new second-generation Telluride Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter turbo four with electric motors for 329 hp and 339 lb-ft, delivering an EPA-estimated 35 mpg combined and up to 637 miles of range on the EX FWD. Chris discovered its larger dimensions bring class-leading second-row legroom, easier third-row access, and impressive cargo space. Available dual 12.3-inch screens, generative AI voice, Ergo Motion massage seats, and heated seating for all three rows create a near-luxury cabin. Hybrid pricing starts at $46,490, though Chris’s fully equipped tester priced out near $60K.
📊 JD Power Finds Owners Like Invisible Tech
Owners prefer technology they barely notice. Automatic ignition, AI climate control, and simple Level 2 driver aids score highest; passenger screens and hands-free Level 2+ systems frustrate more. Cadillac ranked highest overall, followed by Genesis and BMW. Hyundai led mass-market brands for the seventh straight year.
🤖 AI Agents in the Cabin
AI agents could turn cars into productive “third spaces” for work and personal tasks, with voice-driven requests and productivity tools on the way. ABI Research forecasts growth from 5 million to 70 million AI-enabled vehicles by 2035. Automakers risk ceding cockpit control to external networks and cloud services, creating dependency on connectivity quality and latency. Consumers might not like the challenges.
🚙 Jeep Wrangler Smoky Mountain Edition
Jeep debuted the 2027 Wrangler Smoky Mountain special edition at the Smoky Mountain Invasion. Built on the Willys platform, it features exclusive hood decals, a body-color hardtop and flares, a gloss-black grille, unique 17-inch wheels, and terracotta accent stitching inspired by Great Smoky Mountains sunrises. Trail Rated capability remains intact, and it’s priced just $80 above a comparably equipped Willys.
⚡ Genesis GV90 Flagship SUV
Genesis unveiled its first full-size electric flagship, the GV90, with the world’s first hidden B-pillar coach doors on the Neolun version. Dual motors deliver 657 hp and 590 lb-ft; 123.5-kWh battery offers about 310 miles of range. Among the features are a lounge-like cabin with swiveling seats, pop-up OLED display, 25-inch HUD, and Bang & Olufsen audio.
🎙️ Special Guest
Jenny Walker, Goodyear off-road tires expert, joins Jack and Chris.

2026 Genesis G70, 2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport, Ford-GM tariff tiff, Acura NEXERA concept, Lucid Gravity supercar, Jeep recall, carbuying AI
Season 1, Episode 333
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad is joined by guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo for road tests of the 2026 Genesis G70 3.3T Prestige and the fascinating new 2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport, the raciest RAV4 ever. They also examine Ford and GM’s growing disagreement over trade policy, Acura’s dramatic NEXERA Vision concept, the 1,070-horsepower Lucid Gravity GT-S, and a massive Stellantis rearview-camera recall. Additional topics include the technologically transformed Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the growing influence of artificial intelligence on car shopping. Matt DeLorenzo joins the show as this week’s special guest for a discussion about Monterey Car Week and the 2027 North American Car of the Year competition.
🚗 Jack Nerad’s Road Test: 2026 Genesis G70 3.3T Prestige
The 2026 Genesis G70 3.3T Prestige is becoming something of an endangered species: a traditional rear-wheel-drive luxury sport sedan powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6. Jack’s rear-drive test car packed 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque, an eight-speed automatic, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, and a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.5 seconds. Inside are Nappa leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display, Lexicon premium audio, and a 10.3-inch touchscreen. At $58,295 as tested, the G70 combines strong performance and upscale equipment with impressive warranty coverage, though rear-seat space, trunk capacity, and fuel economy are compromises. Jack asks whether this old-school sport sedan might actually be more appealing because it refuses to follow the SUV crowd.
⚡ Matt DeLorenzo’s Road Test: 2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport
The 2026 Toyota RAV4 enters the new model year with an all-hybrid lineup, including the GR Sport Plug-in hybrid variant that Matt DeLorenzo tested. It featured GR-tuned suspension and steering, functional aerodynamics, all-wheel-drive and sport seating. The PHEV system boosts total output to 324 net combined system horsepower while offering fuel economy of an estimated 40 mpg combined. The five-passenger compact SUV offers 37.8 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats and as much as 70.4 cubic feet with them folded. Every RAV4 gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense 4.0. Matt and Jack give us their somewhat different impressions of the latest version of one of America’s most important vehicles.
📊 Ford and GM Clash Over Trade Policies
Ford and General Motors agree that North American auto production needs protection, but they don’t necessarily agree on how to do it. Ford is advocating higher tariffs on South Korean vehicles while seeking relief on imported aluminum, an especially important issue for its F-150 production. GM, meanwhile, has criticized Ford’s battery relationship with China’s CATL and is promoting its own battery development. Both companies warn that proposed changes to USMCA content requirements could add billions of dollars in annual costs. GM expects $2.5 billion to $3.5 billion in gross tariff-related expenses this year, while Ford projects a net impact of about $1 billion.
🚘 Acura NEXERA Vision Debuts
Acura used Monterey Car Week to unveil the NEXERA Vision, a dramatic concept designed to preview the company’s next generation of vehicles. Created at Acura’s Los Angeles studio, the concept features dual-hinge butterfly doors, active aerodynamics, 22-inch centerlock wheels, carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes, and a new lighting signature based on the Acura “A.” Inside, fixed floor-mounted seats, adjustable pedals and steering wheel, recycled aluminum, Alcantara, CircuLeather, and forged carbon create a futuristic driver-focused cabin. Elements of the design will begin reaching production with next-generation Acuras.
⚡ 1,070-HP Lucid Gravity GT-S Arrives
Lucid has turned its seven-passenger Gravity electric SUV into something approaching a supercar. The new Gravity GT-S delivers 1,070 horsepower and accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds while retaining seating for up to seven adults. Standard equipment includes rear-wheel steering and an adaptive three-chamber air suspension, while distinctive blue exterior and interior accents identify the high-performance model. Pricing starts at $125,900 before taxes, fees, and options, and the GT-S will be offered exclusively in the United States.
🚨 Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep & Ram Recall
FCA US is recalling an estimated 850,000 Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles because faulty radio software can prevent the rearview-camera image from appearing on the media screen. The recall covers a long list of 2026 and 2027 models, including Pacifica and Voyager minivans, Dodge Chargers, numerous Jeep SUVs and trucks, and several Ram models. Customers will receive an over-the-air software update, and recall notices are scheduled to begin arriving in September. The company says it is unaware of related accidents or injuries.
🤖 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Gets Major Tech Upgrade
Mercedes-Benz calls the latest C-Class update the most comprehensive technological upgrade in the model’s history. Due in U.S. dealerships during the first half of 2027, the sedan gets refreshed styling, the latest MB.OS operating system, fourth-generation MBUX, an AI-powered Virtual Assistant capable of multi-turn conversations, and over-the-air updates. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine uses mild-hybrid assistance to produce 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, while an electric auxiliary compressor is intended to improve response. Advanced driver-assistance features including MB.DRIVE and 360-degree parking assistance are standard.
💻 Car Buyers Embrace AI Faster Than Dealers
A Cox Automotive survey finds 82 percent of dealers already use artificial intelligence, but consumers may be changing their shopping habits faster than dealerships can respond. Sixty-three percent of shoppers say they definitely or probably will use AI for their next vehicle purchase, while 24 percent say AI already makes them feel better prepared when entering a dealership. Dealers most commonly use the technology to automate tasks, coordinate customer follow-up, and generate content. Although 69 percent expect AI to help increase sales and revenue, only 22 percent of current users say they have seen that growth so far.
🎙️ Special Guest
Veteran automotive journalist, North American Car of the Year juror, and author Matt DeLorenzo joins Jack Nerad as guest co-host and special guest.
📩 Listener Question of the Week
Manny from Chino, California asks: “I want to trade in my car on a new one, but I think it’s worth less than I owe on the loan. Do you have any tips for me? What should I do?” Jack and Matt discuss what drivers should consider when they find themselves upside down on a vehicle loan.

2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade & Ford F-350 Super Duty tests, plus Ford Fathom EV truck, 2027 Lexus ES hybrid, Ford AI assistant & more
Season 1, Episode 332
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad and co-host Chris Teague deliver fresh road tests of the 2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade and the Ford F-350 Super Duty with Power Stroke diesel. They also examine the latest on premium buyers shifting to mainstream brands, Ford’s newly named Fathom electric truck, the Ford/Lincoln AI assistant rollout, Chrysler’s custom Pacifica concepts, and the new Lexus ES 350h hybrid. Special guest Derrick Ty, senior manager of product planning strategy at Kia, joins the show as well.
🚗 Jack Nerad Road Test: 2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade
The 2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade adds dark-themed attitude to what many consider America’s favorite hybrid sedan. Based on the SE, it features sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch satin black wheels, gloss-black accents, and black badging. The fifth-generation hybrid system delivers 225 hp, 7.0-second 0-60, and an impressive 46 mpg combined. Jack details its comfortable cabin with SofTex seats, dual-zone climate, and available 12.3-inch screen. With a base price of $32,300; as-tested $35,878, it represents strong value, efficiency, and practicality with a stylish edge. But is it sporty enough to justify its looks?
⚡ Chris Teague Road Test: Ford F-350 Super Duty
The 2026 Ford F-350 Super Duty with the 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8 (500 hp / 1,200 lb-ft in high-output form) remains a go-to heavy-duty workhorse. Towing up to 40,000 pounds and payload approaching 8,000 pounds, it still offers real-world efficiency of around 20 mpg. Its firm unladen ride settles with a load, and we like its strong brakes and capable steering. Available from basic XL work trucks to leather-trimmed King Ranch and Platinum models with advanced trailering aids, the F-350 prioritizes brute capability and versatility for serious haulers.
📊 Premium Vehicle Buyers Defecting to Mainstream Brands
Premium brands’ share fell to 13.3 percent in the first half of 2026 as buyers turned to mainstream models. Among midsize premium SUV owners who traded in a vehicle, 32 percent chose mainstream models. Younger buyers, lower-income households, and rural/suburban owners lead the shift. JD Power APEAL data shows the emotional-satisfaction gap between premium and mass-market has narrowed dramatically as technology and refinement become widespread.
⚡ Ford’s New Electric Truck Gets a Name: Fathom
Ford named its upcoming affordable midsize EV truck the Fathom. Pre-orders start early 2027 with pricing from $28,350. It’s the first vehicle on the Ford’s Universal EV Platform, and it will provide seating five with more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, Ford says. The new truck will include a large touchscreen, bidirectional power, digital key, frunk/bed storage, and BlueCruise hardware. Ford claims the name reflects depth, capability, and a new kind of practical truck buyer.
🚐 Chrysler Showcases Two Custom Pacifica Concepts
At the recent Roadkill Nights, Chrysler displayed a factory-inspired Pacifica Limited with Mopar accents and a full VANkulture enthusiast build. The concepts highlight personalization potential as Gen Z and Millennial minivan purchases rise sharply and the segment is forecast to grow. One-third of current Chrysler Pacifica buyers already choose the S Appearance Package.
🤖 Ford and Lincoln AI Assistant Rolls Out
A new AI assistant is expanding across Ford and Lincoln apps for roughly eight million eligible owners of 2021-and-newer vehicles. It answers vehicle-specific questions on features, cargo fit, warning lights, tire pressure, range, and more without needing model details. The app-first approach delivers the capability now with in-vehicle intelligence planned for 2027.
🚙 2027 Lexus ES 350h Hybrid Joins Battery-Electric Lineup
Lexus confirmed the ES 350h hybrid (244 hp, 46/44 mpg FWD/AWD) will join the battery-electric ES 350e and ES 500e on the shared multi-pathway platform. Same refined design, 14-inch screen, and Safety System+ 4.0. Base MSRP $49,805. The new hybrid version gives buyers a choice of powertrains without sacrificing quiet luxury.
🎙️ Special Guest
Derrick Ty, senior manager of product planning strategy at Kia, joins Jack and Chris to detail the makeover of the Kia Seltos.
📩 Listener Question of the Week
Carlyle from Wooster, Ohio asks: “How do you feel about automakers who charge subscription fees for vehicle features? I think it’s a rip-off, but maybe I’m missing something.” Chris and Jack have acidic reactions.

2027 Kia Telluride X-Line & 2026 Lexus RZ tests, plus Hennessey Blackbird hypercar, Genesis Magma price, record trade-in equity & more
Season 1, Episode 331
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad is joined by co-host Chris Teague to deliver fresh road tests of the all-new 2027 Kia Telluride X-Line SX Prestige and the expanded 2026 Lexus RZ lineup. Looking at news and comment, they detail the latest on Hennessey’s pure-analog hypercar, Genesis’s first high-performance EV, and the end of the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Especially for car buyers — and industry observers — they outline the record trade-in equity owners currently enjoy while also explaining the ongoing decline in car leasing and what that means to car buyers. Our special guest Ezra Peterson, vice president of insurance and auto refinance at Way.com, also joins the show.
🚗 Jack Nerad Road Test: 2027 Kia Telluride X-Line SX Prestige
As Jack Nerad outlines in his in-depth review, the second-generation Telluride grows in size, style, and capability. The X-Line SX Prestige hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter turbo-four with electric motors for 329 hp and 339 lb-ft, delivering 0-60 in about 6.4 seconds and 31 mpg combined with more than 500 miles of range. A longer wheelbase, boxier rugged looks, dual 12.3-inch screens, generative AI voice assistant, and strong three-row space make it an impressive family SUV. With an as-tested price around $61,000, the new Telly provides strong value and lush refinement. But how do we feel about the turbo-hybrid setup?
⚡ Chris Teague Road Test: 2026 Lexus RZ
Chris Teague puts the Lexus RZ eletric car through its paces. This model year Lexus expands its all-electric crossover with three powertrains: RZ 350e (221 hp FWD), 450e (308 hp AWD), and 550e F SPORT (402 hp AWD). Ranges run from roughly 301 miles down to 229 miles depending on model and wheels. NACS port, refined ride, dual-zone climate, heated/ventilated seats, 14-inch screen, and Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 are standard. Higher trims add Mark Levinson audio, head-up display, and panoramic roof. This is a polished, quiet luxury EV focused on everyday usability, but is it a good choice for your family?
🏎️ Hennessey’s $2.5 Million Blackbird Hypercar
Hennessey Special Vehicles unveils the Blackbird—an analog, naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 hypercar with six-speed manual, screen-free cabin, rear-drive, and active stabilizers inspired by the SR-71. The vehicle “targets 800-850 hp, “ — whatever that means, and it is expected to weigh under 3,000 pounds. Expect 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, and a 220-mph top speed. Limited to 71 examples from $2.5 million, more than two-thirds already allocated.
⚡ Genesis Announces GV60 Magma Pricing
Genesis has priced its first high-performance EV at $69,950. Dual-motor AWD delivers more than 600 hp (up to 641 in Boost), Drift Mode, Virtual Gear Shift with “authentic sound,” and Magma-specific aero and bucket seats. The zippy sportster will arrive soon at select California, New York, and New Jersey retailers.
📊 Record Trade-In Equity
Average positive equity on trade-ins hit a record $13,330 in Q2 2026, nearly double pre-pandemic levels. Everyday trucks and crossovers (F-150, Silverado, Ram 1500, CR-V, RAV4, etc.) lead with five-figure equity. Higher loan rates make that equity especially valuable as a down payment, especially with transaction prices reaching record levels. On the sadder side, negative equity also hit records for those who bought at peak prices in the dark days of the pandemic.
📉 Decline in Vehicle Leasing
Leasing share has fallen from about 30% pre-pandemic to 23% in the first half of 2026. Aggressive incentives are gone, and returning customers face $100–$200 higher monthly lease payments this time around. More buyers are shifting to longer loans (nearly 25% at 84 months), while fewer off-lease returns keep used-car prices elevated.
🚙 Land Rover Ends Discovery Sport
After 11 years and steadily declining U.S. sales (only about 1,100 in the first half of 2026), Land Rover will put a firm stop to Discovery Sport production in December 2026. The Evoque becomes the sole “entry-level model” for now. EU safety rules and normal product cycles are among the reasons for this tragic loss.
🎙️ Special Guest

Hitting the Hybrid Highway in the 2026 Lexus NX 350h
Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad is joined by guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo (Chris Teague is off remodeling). They deliver two fresh road tests -- 2026 Lexus NX 350h and 2026 Volvo EX30 Cross Country -- and they unpack the latest JD Power APEAL study, California’s EV funding irony and new EV incentives, Waymo robotaxi challenges, and Toyota’s 2027 Crown and Sequoia updates. Special guest Jason Allan, founder of Bestest (shopbestest.com) also joins the show.
🚗 Jack Nerad Road Test: 2026 Lexus NX 350h F Sport Handling
Jack finds the latest NX hybrid refined, quiet, and efficient (40 mpg combined in FWD form). The F Sport Handling package adds adaptive suspension, distinctive styling, and bolstered seats while keeping the focus on comfort. Strong tech (14-inch screen, available Mark Levinson audio), premium cabin, and competitive pricing make it a smart luxury compact choice. Tested example: $56,714 as equipped. Is it worth that kind of spend?
⚡ Matt DeLorenzo Road Test: 2026 Volvo EX30 Cross Country
Volvo’s first Cross Country EV treatment raises ride height to 7.5 inches, softens the suspension, and adds outdoor-inspired styling cues including a topographical-map fascia. Dual-motor AWD delivers 422 hp and strong acceleration (estimated 3.4 seconds to 60 mph), with EPA range of 203–227 miles. Scandinavian interior uses recycled materials, but rear space is tight. Pricing starts at $49,545. Note: Volvo will discontinue the EX30 in the U.S. after the 2026 model year, so this also represents a farewell.
📊 JD Power 2026 APEAL Study: Owners Love Their Cars More Than Ever
Overall satisfaction jumps seven points to 858 on a 1,000-point scale—the biggest gain since 2018. Porsche tops premium brands; MINI leads mass-market. Importantly, the emotional gap between luxury and mainstream continues to shrink. BMW and Hyundai Motor Group dominate model awards. Battery-electric vehicles post the strongest gains.
⚡ California’s EV Push Creates Budget Irony + New Incentives
Falling fuel-tax revenue (projected billion-dollar shortfall) is driving interest in road-use charges and higher EV registration fees, even as California launches new upfront incentives ($3,500 new / $1,750 used) with MSRP caps and a California-headquartered manufacturer exception. That last is perhaps the most controversial. Ask Tesla’s employees who call California home.
🤖 Waymo Robotaxis Cluster & Weather Challenges
Dozens of driverless Waymos gridlocked San Francisco’s Presidio after Fourth of July fireworks. Separate weather-related pauses and incidents reported in Texas and elsewhere. Seems self-driving and extreme weather don’t play together well.
🚙 Toyota 2027 Crown & Sequoia Updates
The Toyota Crown gains stronger hybrid powertrains (up to 340 hp Hybrid MAX), more tech, and refined styling. The Sequoia SUV adds a new Trailhunter overlanding package with upgraded suspension, recovery gear, and locking differential.

Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad reports on his early drive of the all-new 2027 Kia Seltos X-Drive SX, and co-host Chris Teague evaluates the overlanding-focused 2026 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter. The pair also cover a full slate of automotive news and present an exclusive conversation with Kia North America marketing chief Russell Wager. In addition, they dive into the leadership changes at Ram and Jeep, California’s controversial and gerrymandered new EV rebate rules, and the redesigned Volkswagen Atlas.
🚗 Jack Nerad Test-Drives the 2027 Kia Seltos X-Line SX AWD
Jack previews the second-generation Kia Seltos after driving the highly equipped X-Line SX AWD on Southern California’s Ortega Highway. The small SUV combines Telluride-inspired styling, a roomier cabin, available all-wheel drive, and a broad technology upgrade. 🚙 Chris Teague Test-Drives the 2026 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter
Chris reviews the Trailhunter, the sixth-generation 4Runner’s purpose-built overlanding model. It pairs Toyota’s body-on-frame TNGA-F platform with the standard i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, producing 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Specialized equipment includes Old Man Emu shocks, a locking rear differential, Crawl Control, steel underbody protection, 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires, rock rails, an ARB roof rack, and an integrated air compressor. Inside are a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a 14-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated front seats, and up to 82.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
🎙️ Special Guest Interview

2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness, 2026 Hyundai Venue, plus EU eye-tracking mandate, bigger Tesla 3-row Model Y & VW's woes
Season 1, Episode 328
Show notes
Would you choose one of the least expensive vehicles in the country for a road trip to Las Vegas? Host Jack Nerad did just that, taking the $25,000 small SUV on a 600-mile out-and-back in weather topping 100 degrees. What -- is he nuts? Meanwhile, Co-Host Chris Teague gave himself a more reasonable assignment, reviewing the off-road-ready 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness. Jack and Chris also discuss Europe’s new mandatory driver-monitoring systems, progress on solid-state batteries, and Tesla’s new (longer) three-row Model Y. Labor strife also hits the news in the form of Hyundai worker strikes and Volkswagen’s restructuring setback. Plus, Britain’s Goodwood car festival announces an American version.
🚙 Jack Nerad’s Road Test: 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL
Jack reviews the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL, one of the most affordable new SUVs available. And, inexplicably, he tests the car on one of his longest road trips of the year -- a drive to Las Vegas, where a show at The Sphere was at the end of the rainbow. With a total price around $24,440 as tested, the subcompact crossover delivers nimble city handling, 31 mpg combined efficiency, and a surprisingly comfortable cabin. As he did battle with I-15, Jack discovered the usefulness of the SUV’s modern tech with its 8-inch touchscreen and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. Luckily, its strong safety features didn’t come into play.
🚗 Chris Teague’s Road Test: 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness
While Jack talks about the Venue, Chris tests the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness, the most rugged version of the redesigned midsize SUV. Powered by a 260-hp turbo 2.4-liter boxer engine with CVT and Symmetrical AWD, it features 9.5 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, X-MODE, electronic dampers, and enhanced approach/breakover angles. Not just an off-road face, the Outback Wilderness offers strong utility with increased cargo space, a 12.1-inch touchscreen, and a balance of multi-terrain capability and daily comfort.

2026 Ford Expedition Platinum, 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, plus Rivian surges, Lucid struggles & Chinese force VW restructuring
Season 1, Episode 327
Show notes
While some say go big or go home, others will tell you great things come in small packages. This week on America on the Road, we test both theories as Jack Nerad and Chris Teague review two family-friendly SUVs. On the Go Big side of the ledger Chris puts the luxurious 2026 Ford Expedition Platinum through its paces. Thinking smaller, Jack pilots the efficient 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid to a Fourth of July celebration -- at Dodger Stadium, no less.
The pair also discuss Lucid’s leadership shakeup and missed targets, Rivian’s building momentum, Volkswagen’s potential massive job cuts, Subaru’s new Trailseeker EV, Kia’s refreshed Niro Hybrid, and Hennessey’s wild new manual-transmission hypercar. Do you have a spare $2.65 million burning a hole in your designer jeans?
🚙 Jack Nerad’s Road Test: 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE
In a week that included a Fourth of July celebration at the third-oldest major league baseball park in the nation, Jack drove and evaluated the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE. He discovered a practical and efficient compact crossover with a 196-hp hybrid powertrain delivering an excellent 42 mpg combined. The small SUV delivers a composed ride, offers upscale XSE styling, and a roomy interior. But at around $37,449 as tested, does the package justify the price? Or are other Corolla Cross models better buys? We’ll answer all that and more.
🚗 Chris Teague’s Road Test: 2026 Ford Expedition Platinum
While Jack was celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday in the Toyota, Chris tested the 2026 Ford Expedition Platinum, a premium full-size SUV that seats up to eight. With strong towing capability (up to 9,600 lbs) and refined comfort, it offers large families great stretch-out room. The big SUV is powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 producing 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, and it offers available four-wheel drive, Continuously Controlled Damping for a smoother ride, and impressive cargo space. So is it a better choice than the competitive Chevrolet Tahoe?

All-new 2026 Subaru Outback, 2026 Kia K4 GT-Line Turbo hatchback, plus self-driving trust issues, deep EV discounts & Jeep giveaway
Season 1, Episode 324
Show notes
Who says there are no affordable cars on the market? This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad and Chris Teague review two vehicles that put the lie to that notion — the redesigned 2026 Subaru Outback and the fun-to-drive 2026 Kia K4 GT-Line Turbo hatchback. They also discuss lagging consumer trust in self-driving cars, big discounts in the EV market, and tightening synthetic oil supplies. In the Hey What’s Going On Department, they take a look at Jeep’s attempt to leverage the World Cup, the nation’s 250th birthday and the desire to get something for free into a tongue-in-cheek promotion contest. If your name is George Washington, please raise your hand. All others, remain seated.
🚙 Jack Nerad’s Road Test: 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback GT-Line Turbo
Jack reviews the 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback GT-Line Turbo, a practical and engaging compact hatch that proves that fun-affordable cars still exist -- they’re just colored in a weird shade of yellow. (Okay, it’s available in other colors, too.) Powered by a 190-hp turbo 1.6-liter engine backed by an eight-speed automatic, it offers sporty handling, a premium-feeling interior, generous cargo space (up to 59.3 cu ft), and advanced safety features. It bears a total price of $32,870 as tested, so it probably won’t force you to clear out your 401k.
🚗 Chris Teague’s Road Test: 2026 Subaru Outback
Chris tests the seventh-generation 2026 Subaru Outback. The “all-new" model looks a lot like the old one, but it brings bolder styling, increased interior space, and enhanced capability. The Outback is available with a 2.5-liter 180-hp boxer or 2.4-liter turbo 260-hp boxer engine, standard Symmetrical AWD, and up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance on Wilderness trim. Inside it features a large 12.1-inch touchscreen, improved EyeSight safety tech, and a more refined cabin while retaining its legendary adventure-ready DNA. If your adventure consists of a four-block trip to the local ice cream shop, all the better.

Show notes
This week on America on the Road, Jack Nerad and Chris Teague road test and review two very different Hyundais — the futuristic 2026 Ioniq 9 battery-electric three-row SUV and the realistic 2026 Tucson XRT. They also offer details on Ford’s aggressive new Explorer ST Sinister package and premium Bronco Filson edition, Lucid’s major Gravity software update, Subaru’s enhanced 2027 BRZ, and Audi’s stunning 1,001-hp Nuvolari supercar. Our special guest is Demo Days founder BJ Birtwell with news about an exciting series of events that will unfold through the balance of the year.
🚙 Jack Nerad’s Road Test: 2026 Hyundai Tucson XRT AWD
Jack reviews the 2026 Hyundai Tucson XRT AWD, a mildly rugged-looking compact SUV with an affordable price and approachable personality. Jack and Chris applaud its 187-hp 2.5-liter engine, conventional automatic transmission, standard all-wheel drive, and roomy and upscale interior. With excellent cargo space and a comprehensive safety suite, the $36,815 (as-tested) Tucson variant gets a thumbs-up for its strong value, everyday comfort, and semi-adventurous styling.
🚗 Chris Teague’s Road Test: 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 SEL AWD
Chris tests the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 SEL AWD, a comfortable three-row electric family SUV with a 110.3 kWh battery, dual-motor AWD producing 303 hp, and an EPA-estimated 320-mile range. He highlights its smooth ride, spacious and flexible interior, and fast DC charging (10-80% in ~24 minutes). Sporting advanced tech with a dual 12.3-inch display and a strong safety suite, the Ioniq 9 is worth a long look if you intend to buy a battery-electric SUV, but if you don’t , its starting price of around $67,920 might take the wind out of your sails. Palisade, anyone?

BJ Birtwell, founder of Electrify Expo / Demo Days, joins the show to discuss the evolving EV landscape and consumer experiences. The first of his series of Demo Days events will unfold soon at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. We are unsure if the little old lady will attend.
