    🌿 Episode Description

What if the key to your animal’s health lies in looking beyond the symptoms—and rethinking what you put in their food bowl?

In Part 2 of my conversation with veterinary pioneer Dr Clare Middle, we explore the connection between nutrition, gut health and animal wellbeing. From inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the gut microbiome to natural feeding and traditional Chinese veterinary food therapy, Clare shares insights from her experience in integrative veterinary care.

We discuss vaccination and titre testing, the value of combining conventional and holistic approaches, and the fascinating ways animals may indicate what their bodies need through their food preferences and behaviour.

And there’s more to come! In Part 3, Clare and I continue with the practical side of natural feeding, including balancing diets, transitioning foods and navigating common challenges.

    🐾 Episode Highlights
Nutrition and gut health: Exploring diet and inflammatory bowel disease.
Vaccination and titre testing: Discussing immunity and vaccination practices.
Integrative veterinary care: Why conventional and holistic approaches can complement each other.

Dana Saidi joins me to discuss Lani, an endangered Hawaiian monk seal known to the local community in Lahaina, Hawaii. A video reportedly shows a tourist throwing a rock directly towards her, narrowly missing her.

I share my intuitive impressions of Lani’s experience, including the shock of an unexpected act of aggression in a place where she had been accustomed to feeling safe around people.
Dana and I consider what it means to share our world with wild animals, the importance of protecting them, and how humans can create safer opportunities for peaceful coexistence.

  2. The Incredible World of Tracking Dogs: How Dogs Find the Missing — Part 1

    Season 1, Episode 30

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

    🐾 Episode Description

In this episode of Animal Talk with Trisha McCagh, we continue Animals with Jobs and meet Sonya Bowditch from Canine Trackers Perth. Sonya has spent 18 years working with tracking dogs and supporting searches for missing loved ones across Western Australia.

Sonya explains the difference between scent-specific tracking and human remains detection, how dogs distinguish one person's scent from thousands of others, and how wind, rain, water and terrain can affect a scent trail.

We also explore the remarkable partnership between dog and handler. Every dog works differently: some track with their noses close to the ground, others air-scent, while some carefully follow a trail and others take a shortcut. The handler must learn to recognise these individual behaviours and understand what the dog is communicating.

The conversation also looks at what happens when dogs go missing and revert to survival instincts, and Trisha shares a remarkable story about helping a family locate their missing dog through animal communication.

    🐾 Key Takeaways

    • A dog's sense of smell allows it to identify and follow incredibly specific scent information.
    • Tracking is a partnership: the dog follows the scent while the handler must understand its behaviour and indications.
    • Experience matters. Younger dogs may stay closely on a trail, while experienced dogs may confidently take a different route.
    • Missing dogs can enter survival mode and behave very differently from how they behave at home.
    • Understanding animal behaviour can be just as important as understanding the technology and training behind a search.

    🐾 Animal News

We discuss a recent incident involving a male bonobo at Memphis Zoo who slammed into the enclosure glass after visitors reportedly taunted the animals. The incident opens a conversation about animal intelligence, respect and what animals may be communicating through their behaviour.

While watching the footage, Trisha received a strong impression from the bonobo: “We are highly intelligent. Do not treat us like we are dumb.”

Trisha then shares a remarkable story from a zoo workshop involving a turtle who appeared to respond to derogatory comments made by visitors. The story highlights the importance of remembering that animals may perceive far more than we realise—including the intent and energy behind our words.

  3. 🐾 The Dogs Who Went to War: Courage, Loyalty & Life Beyond Service | Part 2

    Season 1, Episode 28

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

    Episode Description 🐾
What happens to a military working dog when the mission ends? In Part 2, Ryan Wilson takes us beyond the battlefield and into the reality of retirement, recovery and life after service.

Ryan shares his firsthand experience of working alongside military dogs, including in Afghanistan. We explore whether dogs can experience trauma after operational service, how frightening experiences can create lasting associations, and the physical injuries they may carry into retirement.

We also uncover a little-known reality: once a military dog retires, responsibility for its ongoing care can fall entirely to the handler or person who takes the dog home. Veterinary treatment, medication and surgery can become a significant financial burden, even when injuries were sustained during service.

This is why Ryan and fellow dog handler Jace Kelly created Working Paws Australia, to support retired working dogs.
We also explore the courage of these animals, the handler-dog relationship, and whether retired military working dogs should be recognised as veterans.

    Key Takeaways 🐾
Their service doesn't end when their work ends. Many retired working dogs carry physical or emotional consequences from their years of service.

Dogs are partners, not equipment. Ryan's experience highlights the trust and connection between handler and dog.

Training can be completely real from a dog's perspective. This makes stress management especially important.

The cost of service can continue long after retirement. Handlers can face substantial veterinary expenses for dogs injured during service.

Awareness matters. Working Paws Australia raises awareness and provides financial support for retired military working dogs.

    Animal News 🐙
This week, Animal News takes us beneath the ocean to meet some very opinionated octopuses — and it seems the ladies have something to say!

Filming off the Australian coast captured octopuses propelling shells and other objects across the seabed, including towards other octopuses. So what exactly is going on?

Are they being aggressive? Protecting their territory? Or are they simply saying, “Get out of my space!”?

Trisha and Dana dive into the behaviour and discover that the female octopuses appear to have some very clear boundaries. They know their territory, they like their space, and when an unwanted male comes wandering in, apparently a few well-aimed shells can make the message very clear.

No means no. Go away. Take a hike, buddy! 😂

And then there's the really fascinating possibility that some of this behaviour could simply be because they're bored. Once you've eaten and done your usual octopus activities, what else is there to do on the ocean floor?
Apparently… you can always throw something.

  4. What's In Your Animal's Bowl - The Truth About nutrition Part 1

    Season 1, Episode 29

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

    Episode Description 🐾
We’ve all heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” But what about our animals?

In Part 1 of this fascinating conversation, Trisha McCagh is joined by holistic veterinarian, author and animal nutrition specialist Dr Clare Middle to explore one of the most important—and often misunderstood—foundations of animal health: nutrition.

Clare shares the experiences that led her to question conventional approaches to feeding dogs and cats, beginning with her early years as one of the first students at Murdoch University and continuing through decades of veterinary practice, acupuncture, observation and research into natural diets.

Trisha and Clare explore what dogs and cats are naturally adapted to eat, why cats have very different nutritional requirements from dogs, the importance of moisture, bone and organ meats, and why a diet that is simply labelled “raw” is not necessarily a balanced diet.

They also discuss practical ways to transition animals away from dry food, including freeze-dried and air-dried options, the role of digestive support, and what guardians need to consider when an animal is fussy, has digestive issues or simply refuses to eat something new.

Clare also shares her perspective on why nutrition education can be limited within conventional veterinary training, and how this gap can leave animal guardians confused when they receive conflicting advice.

This is a conversation about looking more deeply at what we put into our animals’ bodies—and asking whether we have moved too far away from the foods and feeding patterns their bodies evolved to understand.
And this is only Part 1.

    Key Takeaways
🐾 Nutrition is more than simply filling the bowl. Clare discusses the relationship she sees between diet, digestion and overall wellbeing.
🐾 Dogs and cats are not the same.
🐾 “Raw” does not automatically mean balanced.
🐾 Changing an animal’s diet may take time.
🐾 Know what you are feeding. Understanding the nutritional composition of an animal’s diet is essential before making significant dietary changes.
🐾 There is no substitute for understanding the individual animal.

    👤 About the Guest
Cristina Zenato is a marine conservationist, shark handler, and founder of People of the Water. With decades of experience working directly with Caribbean reef sharks and other marine species, she is known for her hands-on conservation work, including ethical shark interaction, hook removal, and marine education programs in the Bahamas.

Her work focuses on shifting human perception of sharks from fear-based narratives to informed, respectful understanding based on observation and experience.

    🐾 Animal News
Neil the Seal, a juvenile southern elephant seal living around Hobart, Tasmania, who has become a local and social media sensation.

Neil is known for his curious behaviour around humans — interacting with objects like street signs, cones, and exploring urban spaces. While scientists suggest his behaviour may stem from boredom or lack of other seals, Trisha and Dana explore a different perspective: that Neil may be actively choosing interaction and individuality.

They discuss the idea that some animals move between collective instinct and individual expression, similar to how a single animal can step out of group behaviour to explore curiosity, attention, or new environments.

    Neil’s presence raises important questions:
Are wild animals “problem behaviours,” or misunderstood communication?
Do animals choose interaction with humans for stimulation and curiosity?
How do human responses shape an animal’s ongoing behaviour?
The conversation highlights the importance of respecting wild animals while also recognising their intelligence, emotional range, and capacity for choice.

    🐾 Animal News
This week’s animal news focuses on a growing concern in marine science: the corrosion of shark teeth linked to ocean acidification.
Sharks rely on continuously replacing their teeth to maintain their role as apex predators. However, rising levels of carbon dioxide absorption in the oceans are altering water chemistry, lowering pH levels and increasing acidity. This process can weaken and erode calcium-based structures like shark teeth.

While sharks naturally replace teeth throughout their lives, scientists are now concerned that environmental stressors may be accelerating tooth damage faster than replacement rates can keep up.

This raises broader ecological concerns. Sharks are not isolated indicators—they are keystone species. Any biological disruption affecting them may signal wider instability across marine ecosystems, including coral reefs, fish populations, and seagrass habitats.

    🐾 Animal News
This episode’s animal news segment explores the Fraser Island (K’gari) dingo situation in Australia, following the controversial death of a Canadian tourist and the subsequent culling of dingoes on the island.

Dana Saidi highlights ongoing public concern around whether dingoes were responsible, noting that forensic evidence remains inconclusive. Trisha McCagh adds her communication-based perspective, sharing that when she connected with the dingoes, their message was clear: “We didn’t do it.”

The discussion expands into the ethics of wildlife tourism, human responsibility in natural habitats, and the importance of respecting apex predators like dingoes, who play a vital role in ecosystem balance. Removal or culling of native species without clear evidence risks long-term ecological damage and loss of biodiversity.

    Season 1, Episode 21

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

    🌿 Episode Description

In this episode of Animal Talk with Trisha McCagh, we’re joined by Dr. Raquel Butler—veterinarian, educator, and advocate for equine wellbeing.

We explore equine biomechanics and how many “behaviour problems” in horses are often linked to physical discomfort. Dr. Raquel shares how working with challenging horses led her to understand the role of posture, movement, and physiology in overall wellbeing.

Horses communicate constantly through their bodies—how they stand, move, graze, and rest. We discuss functional posture and why there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every horse is unique, and recognising this can greatly improve comfort, performance, and quality of life.

We also cover preparation, including warm-up and cool-down routines, and how even short targeted exercises can make a big difference. A key focus is the nervous system—horses need time to integrate new movement patterns for lasting change.

    🐾 Episode Highlights

    • Behaviour issues in horses often stem from physical causes
    • Posture and movement reveal internal wellbeing
    • What functional posture means for each horse
    • How disciplines impact the body differently
    • Why warm-up and cool-down are essential
    • Small exercises can create big change
    • The nervous system’s role in learning movement
    • Key posture signals to observe daily
    • Veronica the cow and animal intelligence

    🐶 Key Takeaways

    • Every horse is individual—no universal solution
    • The body is always communicating
    • Observation is a powerful tool
    • Preparation and recovery matter as much as training
    • Horses need time to integrate change
    • Small adjustments prevent long-term issues
    • Animal intelligence is often underestimated

    🐾 Animal News

This week we feature Veronica, a cow from Austria who gained global attention after being seen using a broom to scratch herself. She adjusted it to reach different areas, showing clear problem-solving ability.

Scientists debate whether this qualifies as tool use, but the deeper question is why such behaviour still surprises us. From her perspective, it’s simply practical intelligence.

The story raises broader questions about how we define intelligence. Animals consistently show awareness and adaptability, yet we often measure them against human standards.

It also highlights contrast in living systems—animals tend to operate in balance with nature, while humans often overconsume and generate waste. There is much we can learn from observing the natural world more closely.

    🐾 Animal News
This episode’s Animal News explores two of the most misunderstood creatures on Earth—spiders and cockroaches.

Spiders are revealed as vital ecosystem engineers, controlling insect populations, supporting pollination stability, and reducing the need for pesticides. They even provide environmental indicators, signaling ecological imbalance when their populations decline.

Cockroaches, often feared, are shown to be ancient survivors dating back over 300 million years. They can survive extreme conditions, regenerate limbs, withstand radiation, and adapt to nearly any environment. Far from being “dirty pests,” they play important ecological roles and demonstrate extraordinary resilience and intelligence.

This segment challenges listeners to reconsider fear-based conditioning and recognise the essential roles these creatures play in Earth’s living system.

A heartwarming yet cautionary story from Taronga Zoo highlights the importance of responsible interaction with wildlife.

👉 Animals need natural diets to stay healthy

A deeply moving story shared in this episode features a rescued kitten named Geato, found in a temple in South Korea and taken in by monks.

Geato has grown up immersed in the temple environment and is described as spending long periods in deep stillness, appearing to enter meditative states alongside the monks. He is highly sensitive to interruption and deeply attuned to the calm energy of the space.

What makes this story so powerful is the sense that Geato naturally embodies presence and awareness. In the shared silence of the temple, the boundaries between human and animal seem to dissolve, creating a unified field of stillness and consciousness.

The story becomes a reflection on how animals naturally live in the present moment—without distraction, without separation, and without resistance. Geato gently invites us to reconsider meditation not as something we do, but something we already are beneath the noise of modern life.

    Animal News 🐾
Trisha McCagh and Dana Saidi explore the controversial topic of animal cloning and genetic revival, including cases of cloned pets and scientific attempts to resurrect extinct species such as the woolly mammoth and dire wolf.

The conversation raises important ethical questions:
Can a cloned animal ever truly replace the soul essence of a beloved companion?
Does replication of DNA equal continuity of identity or relationship?
Are humans attempting to fill grief through technology rather than healing emotional attachment?

Trisha emphasises that while cloned animals may share physical similarity, they do not carry the same soul essence, personality, or relational identity, suggesting that grief resolution and acceptance may be a more natural path than technological replacement.
