  6. Toward The Turning When Culture And Psychology Dance From Scott Gibbs

    Show notes

Gibbs, a psychotherapist who works with conflict in relationships and across groups, argues that "fighting" over practical problems undermines our ability to solve them. That failure intensifies the fight, deepens distrust, and fuels polarized populism on both the right and the left. In his words, fighting creates populism, which feeds more fighting.Take affordability. A free market-oriented right gives greater weight to individual choice, property rights, and rewards for enterprise. A universalist left gives greater weight to equality, access to necessities, and collective responsibility. Proposed remedies start to feel like threats to "who we are." The right may hear, "My freedom to direct my life is being put under someone else's control." The left may hear, "People's dignity and safety count less than money and the pursuit of profit." Each side's defense becomes the other side's threat, and an argument about the economy turns into a struggle over whose freedom and needs count.

  7. Dirk Pitt Is Back In Obsidian Sky From Author Dirk Cussler

    Show notes

When National Underwater and Marine Agency director Dirk Pitt rescues a team of archaeologists trapped in a cavern by an earthquake, an unexpected artifact is discovered that rewrites history. A two-thousand-year-old silver scroll contains a message in a language more ancient than Phoenician and offering clues to a priceless treasure from antiquity.

While they work to decipher the message, another mystery arises. A freighter has disappeared without a trace in the Mediterranean. When Pitt and his partner Al Giordino find the wreck, they discover that the cargo—a large scale particle accelerator capable of creating plutonium and radioisotopes—is missing. In the wrong hands, its use could spell disaster for Western civilization.

It’s only the first step in a perilous journey to uncover a trail of drugs, deceit, secret technology, and a conspiracy that threatens the planet. From a desperate car chase in the hills of Sicily, to a wild escape on a Spanish river, to a harrowing ride on an underground boring machine, the race begins to connect the pieces in a puzzle with very ancient roots but deadly modern consequences. Only Pitt can discover the truth and halt the plans to extinguish humanity and turn the skies to obsidian.

Holiday season, respiratory illnesses including RSV, flu and COVID-19 are circulating as families prepare for travel, gatherings and more time spent together indoors. For expecting mothers, it’s an important time to understand the role maternal vaccines can play in helping protect both mom and baby. An integral part of prenatal care, maternal vaccination can help reduce the risk of severe illness from vaccine-preventable diseases, including RSV and whooping cough, which can be especially dangerous for infants. That protection can extend beyond pregnancy and into a baby’s first few months of life, helping provide an important layer of protection while their immune system continues to develop.

  19. Prog Rock Emotion Storytelling And More Antartica From Singer Songwriter Tom Ciurczak

    Show notes

Southern California singer/songwriter Tom Ciurczak (pronounced "Sir-Zak") returns with his sixth album, “ANTARCTICA,” a collection that continues his signature blend of heartland rock, melodic songwriting, and vividly drawn characters. Influenced by artists like Bruce Springsteen, Warren Zevon, Steve Earle, The Who, and The Eagles, Ciurczak’s music balances driving rhythms with cinematic, story-driven lyrics.
His path began in New York’s Hudson Valley, inspired by The Beatles’ first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. With a father who was a professional musician at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Ciurczak was immersed early in music’s structure, rhythm, and storytelling power. After graduating from SUNY Oswego, he moved to Southern California, building a career in the specialty lighting industry while continuing to write songs. A turning point came in 2014 at Steve Earle’s Camp Copperhead. “It put me on the road to finish my songwriting ideas and create new ones—I knew I’d found my tribe.”
Ciurczak assembled a top-tier recording team—producer/drummer Stephen Haaker, engineer Brett Grossman, and a group of seasoned studio musicians—to record his debut album, “Call Me Ishmael.” Subsequent releases include the singles “Christmas Time in Hollywood,” the albums “I Ain’t Ever Growing Up: – “Volume I and Volume II” and the critically praised “YORICK” (2025). He is also a member of the Copperhead Six Project, a collaboration of Camp Copperhead songwriters whose album “Muscle Shoals Record Shop” was recorded at the legendary Cypress Moon Studios in Muscle Shoals.
“ANTARCTICA” builds on that momentum, centering on Ciurczak’s ability to craft songs that feel like self-contained three-act stories. The title track draws from the real history of Deception Island, where early 20th-century whaling operations left behind a haunting legacy—reimagined here as a ghost story echoing with the voices of the past.
The album spans a wide emotional and musical range: from the driving opener Invisible Man, about those left unseen in society, to the progressive rock-leaning We Were Immortal, originally conceived for a rock opera. Tracks like Going Down in Flames and Looking for a Place deliver straight-ahead rock energy, while Losing You offers a more intimate piano-driven reflection on life on the road. Elsewhere, Ciurczak explores noir storytelling (Black Out Jack), dark romance (Haunted House), and surreal narrative twists (Atom Glow, Creature from the Blues Saloon).that feel like self-contained three-act plays.
