#41 Taking Care of Business - with Randall Foster
Season 2, Episode 41
Show notes
Welcome back to Behind the Shedd! Today, we have the pleasure of hosting a truly special guest, Mr. Randall Foster. With a wealth of knowledge spanning various aspects of the music industry, Randall offers us an insightful master class on the intricacies of today’s music business. From sync and licensing to other related topics, Randall captivates his audience by simplifying complex music business concepts, ensuring that everyone can grasp the underlying principles. It’s an honor to have him join Harold, Russ, and Wade for this exclusive interview. This is Behind the Shedd.
From Randall - randallfoster.net
"Do what you love and you'll never “work” a day in your life."Someone once said this to me and it really stuck. I'm a 5th generation music professional and proud to say that I love what I do. I look forward to getting up each day and going to work. Not many people can make that claim.
I am Chief Creative Officer of Symphonic Distribution and GM of our Nashville operation. Symphonic is a true 21st century music company. In this role, I am overseeing our music publishing, user-generated content, and sync operations as well as looking for fantastic independent artists and labels that need a team in their corner. We can be that team- soup to nuts.
Prior to my current role it was my pleasure to head up Creative Sync & Licensing for ole music publishing. In that capacity I oversaw a vast catalog of music copyrights and intellectual property and managed the outside usage and licensing of those assets.
In addition to my work-life, I am an Adjunct Professor at Belmont University and a frequent speaker and lecturer at other various universities covering topics ranging from general music business overview, music copyright, music technology, and licensing. Being the son and grandson of great educators, I find myself drawn back towards education at every turn.
When not waxing poetic on the business of music, my time is spent chasing twin teenage girls around the hills of Tennessee. So far I've managed a great run working in and with music, but these girls are by far my greatest achievement.

Bruce and Harold have been working on Harold's life story for an upcoming book. We sat down with Bruce, to discuss updates on the book and to give you a little background information on, Bruce. So usually, if we go to side bar to discuss something or figure something out, we edit that to keep from boring you guys to much. #35 Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight - with Duane Allen
Season 2, Episode 35
Show notes
Welcome back to Behind the Shedd! Well, we have another legend on this episode. Harold, Russ, and Wade sit down with Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys. Duane has been a friend to Harold and Russ for decades. Let's have a seat with him and listen to his remarkable journey to the Oaks and hear about his incredible life and career. Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Duane Allen..
BIO:
A native of Taylortown, Texas, Duane (“Ace”) Allen had formal training in both operatic and quartet singing before becoming a member of the Oaks in 1966. He is a member of the Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame and has written a book on the history of Gospel music. He also holds an honorary doctorate from a Christian college.Duane graduated from Paris Junior College, and then Texas A&M University at Commerce, Texas. He received a B.S. in Music from Texas A&M, studying with Metropolitan Opera stars Richard Webb and William Abbott. For his classical music degree, Duane concentrated on voice, piano, and composition. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from both Paris Junior College and Texas A&M in 2017. He and his wife Norah Lee underwrite a scholarship fund for Texas A&M University Department of Music students.
During the time he studied at Paris Junior College, two operettas were written based on Duane’s life—one entitled “College Go Round” and the other entitled “Let’s See Paree (Paris).” He received a music scholarship to Texas A&M, and, while he was a student there, he starred in a lead role of “Annie Get Your Gun.” He also sang in an elite chorale group, which toured through the United States, as well as internationally.
In 2014, Duane received a special honor from his hometown community of Cunningham, Texas. On April 15, Lamar County officials dedicated the Duane Allen Memorial Bridge on the newly designated Duane Allen Road. The bridge crosses the Big Sandy Creek just a few hundred yards from where Duane was born and raised on the Allen family farm. While in Lamar County for the event, Duane and Norah Lee presented a check to the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial in Paris, Texas. Proceeds were used to support the memorial and to honor family members who had served in the military.
On August 9, 2014, Duane was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame at a ceremony that included fellow members of The Oak Ridge Boys, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden, and Richard Sterban as honorary inductees. An Oak Ridge Boys’ exhibit at the Hall of Fame was unveiled the same day. -OakRidgeBoys.com

#34 Bed of Roses - with Rex Benson
Season 2, Episode 34
Show notes
Welcome back to Behind the Shedd! What a special episode this is. Our guest today is a friend to Harold, Russ, and Wade and a friend to all who have had the good fortune to know him. We welcome our dear friend, Rex Benson. Rex is an American songwriter and music publisher whose career spans more than five decades in the music business.
Bio:
Beginning his songwriting career in the early 1970s, Rex went on to have songs recorded by an impressive list of artists, including Kenny Rogers, Garth Brooks, Tammy Wynette, Don Williams, Joe Diffie, The Oak Ridge Boys, Mel Tillis, Bobby Vinton, Linda Ronstadt and Brad Paisley. His songwriting credits include “Unto You This Night,” recorded by Garth Brooks; “Glass Houses,” recorded by Tammy Wynette with Joe Diffie; “Healing Hands,” recorded by Don Williams; and “What That Means,” recorded by Kenny Rogers with Brad Paisley.
Rex also co-wrote “Bed of Roses” with Steve Gillette. The song was recorded by several artists, including Kenny Rogers with Linda Davis, Chesapeake with Linda Ronstadt, Bobby Vinton and Mel Tillis. Tillis’ 1984 recording provides a special connection to Behind the Shedd — it was produced by legendary record producer Harold Shedd.
Beyond writing songs, Rex built a successful career in music publishing through the Rex Benson Music Group. One of his greatest publishing successes came with “Buy Me a Rose.” Rex signed and helped place the song with Kenny Rogers, whose recording became a Number One country hit in 2000. Luther Vandross later recorded the song for his Grammy-winning album Dance with My Father.
From writing songs and pitching demos to working with some of Nashville’s most recognizable artists, Rex Benson has spent more than 50 years experiencing the music business from the inside.
On this episode of Behind the Shedd, we sit down with Rex to hear the stories behind the songs, the artists who recorded them, and a lifetime spent in the Nashville music business.

#31 That's My Job - with Tommy Jackson
Season 2, Episode 31
Show notes
We are back Behind the Shedd! In episode 31, Harold, Russ, and Wade sit down with a true renaissance man and a dear friend to our team, Tommy Jackson. Tommy is a mentor, a leader, a life coach, a motivational speaker, a football coach, a money manager, an author, a music guy, a song man, and just a great human being. Ladies and gentleman, Mr. Tommy Jackson.
Bio:
Tommy’s journey is one of overcoming the odds to achieve tremendous success. At a young age, he realized that taking ownership of his circumstances could be achieved through self discovery and education. While juggling two jobs to help his single mother pay the power bill, Tommy earned an academic scholarship to Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM). There, he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Finance and a minor in Psychology.Years later, Tommy returned to AUM to experience a full-circle moment. In 2017, he was named Business Alumni of the Year, and the following year, he was honored as one of AUM’s Top 50 Most Influential Alumni.
These accolades were the result of a career in wealth management spanning decades. Recognized as a top financial advisor, Tommy consistently ranked among the Top 1,000 Financial Advisors in the U.S. by Barron’s and Forbes. In 2013, he was named #1 in the state of Alabama by Barron’s Top 100.
With over 30 years of experience helping clients plan for their financial goals, Tommy’s passion for helping others has remained a constant. His ability to connect deeply with people—drawing from his own life experiences—has allowed him to mentor and empower individuals across the nation, from student-athletes to high-level business leaders.
Tommy’s commitment to helping others began on the football field. Though initially hesitant, he observed one of the Cahaba Heights Knights’ practice sessions in Birmingham, Alabama. During that visit, he overheard a child say, “Don’t expect much from us, mister, because we’re a bunch of losers.” That moment was pivotal. It reminded him how the people who believed in him had changed the course of his life—and he knew he wanted to do the same for others.
Recognizing that his life principles could reshape how these kids saw themselves, Tommy agreed to coach the team—and he was right. Under his leadership, they went undefeated, outscoring their opponents 357–12. He not only led that team to a championship, but coached two new teams in the years that followed. As each group bought into his system, Tommy led the program to three consecutive championships. It was
proof his process could be repeated—and change lives.Tommy later transitioned to high school football, where he coached for seven years and won three state championships with Briarwood Christian High School. Building on his success in coaching, he founded The Knights, a youth mentorship program in 1998 that trained and guided over 100 athletes. Many went on to excel in college and professional sports. Among his proudest moments were seeing two of his Knights face off in the 2009 Super Bowl and another achieve a career-high ranking of World No. 11 in Women’s Tennis Doubles.
Tommy’s journey also ventured into music. In 2010, he founded First Note Entertainment (FNE), a multi-genre record label that has achieved over 175 consecutive sold-out shows and launched artists into the Billboard Top 20. Songs from FNE have been featured on The Today Show, World of Dance, American Idol, The Voice, Grey’s Anatomy, and other popular TV shows.
So far, Tommy’s journey has taken him through many unique chapters—but none as important as this one: helping others find their true potential. Whether through keynote speeches, mentorship, or transformative programs, Tommy is dedicated to changing lives with principles and processes that he has lived and continues to teach. - tommyjacksonofficial.com

#30 I'm Holding My Own - with Lee Roy Parnell
Season 2, Episode 30
Show notes
Welcome back to Behind the Shedd! In episode 30, Harold, Russ, and Wade sit down with one of the greats, Lee Roy Parnell. Leroy is not only a great songwriter, great guitarist, great performer, and great artist, but just a great guy to hang out with. What a treat this was, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Lee Roy Parnell:
Bio:
Regarded as one of the world's preeminent slide guitar virtuosos, Lee Roy Parnell has become synonymous with the instrument and the music that has shaped his life from his youngest years.Born in Abilene, Texas to Roy and Anna Belle Parnell in the winter of 1956, Parnell was raised with an uncompromising work ethic, a healthy respect for tradition, and an unquenchable love of music. Nurtured by everything from the Grand Ol' Opry, to Cotton-country Blues, Hardshell Gospel and the inescapable sound of Bob Wills and Roadhouse Boogie that permeated the North Central Texas plains, that love grew into a passion before Parnell reached his early teens.
"It sounds a little like a press-release," he said recently, "but the truth is I was raised in a house filled with music. It was as much a part of the soundtrack of youth as my mother's voice and my Daddy's lessons. It was sustenance to me...like water. And it was my way out of Texas. It was my map."
In the summer of seventy-four, he set out for the only destination on that map that made sense: Nashville.
For nearly twenty years, Parnell paid his dues in every honky-tonk and blues bar from Nashville to Austin and back, honing his craft, sharpening his vocal chops, and fine-tuning the blues-infused slide-guitar style that would become his signature.
"I'm a blue-eyed country soul singer and slide guitar player by trade...that's how I see it," Parnell told a Texas journalist late in 2014. "And I'm privileged to practice a trade that's brought so many blessings to my life."
Blessings that include eight critically-acclaimed albums, and a string of hits that established him as one of Country Music's most gifted triple-threats; as a singer, a writer, and virtuoso guitarist. Talents that brought him nomination nods from the Grammy Awards, the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music, legions of hardcore fans, and induction into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame. -LeeRoyParnell.Com

In Nashville, Gibson held a publishing contract with a company owned by The Oak Ridge Boys. His songwriting prowess quickly caught the attention of prominent artists and led to collaborations that produced many chart-topping country hits. From 1990 to 1994, Gibson showcased his musical versatility as the frontman of the Gibson/Miller Band. Not only did he captivate audiences with his soulful voice, but he also penned many of the band's hits, including "High Rollin'", "Texas Tattoo", "Red, White, and Blue Collar", and "Stone Cold Country". He received the ACM award for ‘Best New Group’ in 1993. He’s also won six BMI awards, two NSAI awards, and was nominated for a Grammy. But for him, this is just the beginning.
