Din & Daf: Conceptual Analysis of Halakha Through Case Study with Dr. Elana Stein Hain

In the previous shiur we discussed essential and transactional holiness. This week, we add another layer of considering holiness - holiness that comes automatically (such as the holiness of a firstborn animal) and holiness that is human-made (such as consecrating an animal or something else to the Mikdash). How does this additional layer shed light on the concept of holiness?

What is the connection between a woman who marries and the family she originally came from? This question has many implications and is, of course, fascinating on a cultural level as well.Today’s sugiya opens up this question in relation to the identity of a daughter of a Kohen who marries an Israelite. Is she still considered, in certain respects, to belong to the priestly family? Or, once she marries an Israelite, does she lose her rights and her fundamental connection to the tribe of Levi?

If my grandmother has trouble swallowing and Pesach is coming… can I ground up and dissolve matzah in water so that she can be yotzeh the mitzvah? How does halakhah define solid food that has dissolved or liquified – does it still count as “food” and is the act of consuming it halakhically defined as “eating”? Show notes

Din & Daf: Conceptual Analysis of Halakha Through Case Study with Dr. Elana Stein Hain

In most cases, contact with a liquid is required in order to make food susceptible to tumah (even if the food has since dried off). This is called הכשר, preparation for becoming tameh. In this shiur, we’ll examine why this is the case, as well as how this fits into subtleties of where we seem to care about tumah of food today, such as urchatz at the seder.

  19. Din & Daf: What is the Logic Behind Issur Hanaa

    Show notes

Din & Daf: Conceptual Analysis of Halakha Through Case Study with Dr. Elana Stein Hain

Jewish law not only forbids cooking meat and milk together, or consuming a cooked mixture, but even deriving benefit - such as feeding one’s animals or making money - off a mixture of milk and meat. While the Gemara from Chullin 114b and on will discuss this issue for a while - moving from universal reasons to reasons that are particular to the prohibition of milk and meat per se - in this shiur we will try to offer an overall logic for the notion that an item would prohibited not only for consumption but for deriving benefit.
