The Spirit as the Third Person of the Trinity
Episode 548
Show notes
Spirit of God E15 — Some New Testament passages present the Spirit as a distinct agent, or entity, who teaches, reminds, and even dwells within Jesus' followers. But more often, the Bible describes the Spirit as God's power, presence, or energy. So what led early Christians to conceive of the Spirit of God as the third person of the Trinity? In this final episode of the series, Jon and Tim discuss how the Spirit came to be understood as a person and what this means for how we experience God's presence today.

A Spirit-Filled Body with Spiritual Gifts
Episode 544
Show notes
Spirit of God E11 — In the book of Acts, the Holy Spirit fills Jesus’ followers at Pentecost; they are to be like a new temple of God’s presence and power. Spirit of God E9 — Our conversation on the Spirit of God is turning the corner from the Hebrew Bible to the New Testament. While all the gospels mention the Spirit of God, or Holy Spirit, Luke is the leader by far with 78 references in his two-part collection of Luke-Acts. In this episode, Jon and Tim explore how deeply the Holy Spirit is integrated into the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

Show notes
Spirit of God E7 — So far in this series, we’ve seen a pattern develop where God gives an extra measure of his ruakh to some leaders in Israel. This is what Israel's prophets are looking forward to: a future prophet-priest-king who will not only restore Israel, but all of creation. Spirit of God E5 — From the first pages of Scripture, we begin hoping for an ideal human image of God who will be filled with God's Spirit to truly represent God's wisdom, word, and rule in the world. Characters like that don’t show up often, but when they do, they’re leaders who combine the roles of a prophet, priest, and king. And in these stories, the Spirit of God is often heavily intertwined. In this episode, Jon and Tim focus on Moses, the first character who fits the prophet-priest-king role and later informs Isaiah’s vision of the future messianic king.

The Spirit and Prophecy in the Hebrew Bible
Episode 537
Show notes
Spirit of God E4 — So far in this series, we've looked at how the Spirit is connected to life and wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. The third most consistent idea associated with the Spirit is God's word, or speech, happening through a human; the Bible calls this prophecy. While most ancient prophecy involved deities taking over a person’s mind, we see a different experience among many of Israel’s prophets. In this episode, Jon and Tim explore this spectrum and focus on prophets like Ezekiel and Micah who experienced a true partnership with the Spirit as they spoke for God.

Spirit of God E2 — The word we translate in English as “spirit” is ruakh in the Hebrew Bible, and it can mean spirit, wind, breath, and mind. Spirit of God E1 — In 2017, we released a 3-episode series on the theme of the Holy Spirit. And now eight years later, we’ve decided there’s still a lot more to reflect on and explore! How We Made the 10 Commandments Video Series
Episode 533
Show notes
The 10 Commandments E17 — We just finished exploring the 10 Commandments, or the 10 Words as they’re called in the Bible. In community, we’ve sought God’s wisdom in these 10 Words, first through Jon and Tim’s conversations and then with your questions in the Q+R episode! And this communal reading approach also extends to how we make videos with our animation studio. The artists start with a blank slate, wrestle with ideas from the podcast recordings, and then formulate a plan for how to make it all come to life through animation. So what is their process? How do we move an idea from podcast to script to video? In this special behind-the-scenes episode, Jon talks with a few artists from our animation studio about making the 10 Commandments video series.

Will We Trust God’s Wisdom or Our Own?
Episode 531
Show notes
The 10 Commandments Hyperlink Episode (E15) — Sometimes at the close of a series, we’ll dig through the podcast archives to find clips that discuss similar ideas from a different perspective. In this 10 Commandments series, we explored how trusting in God's wisdom leads to true life and flourishing, while building lives on our own terms often leads to pain. So in this hyperlink episode, we’ll listen to three clips that explore this theme further. First, Jon and Tim break down the literary structure of the stories surrounding the 10 Commandments, which highlight humanity’s reluctance to wait on God's commands. Second, Jon, Tim, and former BibleProject scholar Carissa Quinn look at how the golden calf story in Exodus 32 relates to the 10 Commandments. And finally, Jon, Tim, and Carissa discuss how all of the Bible’s poems, narratives, laws, and letters are wisdom for us.

Weightier Matters Beneath the 10 Commandments
Episode 530
Show notes
The 10 Commandments E14 — We’ve come to the end of our series on the 10 Commandments, which are known in the Bible as the 10 Words. All throughout this series, we’ve returned to the idea that these commands are not rules to check off a list, but rather God’s wisdom that leads to true life and flourishing. In this episode, Jon and Tim reflect on some final insights about how to approach the 10 Words (and all of biblical law) as wisdom literature, just as Jesus did.
