Season 1, Episode 5
Show notes
In Part 2 of Mason's conversation with Dr. Mya Thompson from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, they get to do one of their favorite things: talk about birds!
Dr. Thompson shares some of her favorite birds and bird sounds, including Golden-winged Warblers, Barred Owls, Lilac-breasted Rollers, Wood Thrushes, and Prairie Warblers. She tells Mason about an unforgettable childhood encounter with a Barred Owl, unexpectedly finding a Blue-footed Booby in Mexico, and finally seeing Atlantic Puffins at Eastern Egg Rock.
Mason shares his own birding adventures, including seeing Little Penguins in Australia and the birds still on his wish list.
They also talk about birding by sight versus sound, recording birds, favorite birding spots, and one very important question: elephants or birds?
Come along for a fun conversation about the birds we love, the sounds we remember, and the adventures that keep us looking up.

Listening to the Wild with Dr. Mya Thompson: Elephants, Bird Science & Winged Heroes
Season 1, Episode 4
Show notes
Mason sits down with Dr. Mya Thompson of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to explore what happens when curiosity about sound becomes a career studying how animals communicate.
Dr. Thompson shares how a high school lesson about the physics of sound led her to the Cornell Lab, where she studied bird songs, whales, and eventually elephants. Mason learns how scientists study elephant sounds humans can't hear and how they can turn those hidden communications into something we can see.
They also talk about making science fun, creating learning experiences for kids, and Dr. Thompson's graphic novel Winged Heroes, which turns real bird abilities into an adventure story.
Along the way, Mason and Dr. Thompson talk about curiosity, representation in science, and why kids who love birds should know they're part of a much bigger community.
This is Part 1 of Mason's conversation with Dr. Mya Thompson.
