J Nycole Ralph of 'I Play Rocky'
Show notes
In this week's episode of the Black Girl Nerds podcast, we welcome actor J Nycole Ralph of the film 'I Play Rocky'. J Nycole is an actor, producer, and storyteller drawn to the people and stories history too often overlooks.
She appears in Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky, premiering at TIFF, as Diana Lewis, the journalist who appeared as herself in the original Rocky. A conversation with director Peter Farrelly and writer Peter Gamble about honoring Lewis by name became a small but meaningful part of the experience: the trailblazing journalist now appears by name on the film’s official cast list.
J Nycole was most recently seen in The Book of Mormon on Broadway and toured nationally in West Side Story. Her television credits include Black Rabbit and That Damn Michael Che. She wrote, produced, and starred in the award-winning digital comedy series Working Out the Kinks and executive produced Lola, the first African-American female boxing film. Her stage work has also earned her a BroadwayWorld Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Filmmakers David Greaves and Liani Greaves of 'Once Upon a Time in Harlem'
Show notes
In this week's episode of the Black Girl Nerds podcast, we welcome filmmakers David Greaves and Liani Greaves of the film documentary Once Upon a Time in Harlem.
A decade after his death, genre-defying filmmaker William Greaves has one last trick up his sleeve with what he considered the most important event he captured on film: a 1972 party he engineered with the living luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance. For four hours, this extraordinary group - many of whom had not seen each other in fifty years - reminisced, critiqued, argued, laughed and drank while wrestling with their place in a rapidly shifting cultural landscape. Shot on 16mm film, newly restored and now directed by Greaves' son David, this landmark film is at once a self-exploration and an inquiry into the heart of the critical mass of energy called the Harlem Renaissance. William Greaves' intent was not only to document these artists and intellectuals as they spoke about their lives and work but also to plumb the meaning of the extraordinary creative period in which they lived to help us better understand how culture has been passed on from one generation to another and the role that the artist plays in keeping it alive.

'Black Zombie' Director Maya Annik Bedward
Show notes
Black Zombie digs beneath the blood-soaked spectacle of modern horror to uncover the zombie’s buried and unsettling origins. Long before it became associated with flesh-eating ghouls, the zombie was a living metaphor for slavery: not a monster, but the ultimate victim of colonial power. A symbol of stolen agency was recast as an object of fear, while Black spiritual traditions were distorted, sensationalized, and erased. Director Maya Annik Bedward traces the evolution of the zombie from colonial Haiti to contemporary Hollywood. Maya is an Afro-Caribbean-Canadian film director whose work blends history, resistance, and pop culture through bold, genre-bending storytelling. Her work has screened at TIFF, Hot Docs, BlackStar, and the New Orleans Film Festival. Her credits include the short films The Haircut(2018) and Why We Fight(2021), as well as the TV series LIDO TV(2022) and BLK: An Origin Story(2022). She is a founding member of the Black Screen Office, championing stories that center Black creativity and power.

The Filmmakers of 'Kingston'
Show notes
In this week's episode of the Black Girl Nerds podcast, we chat with the filmmakers behind the movie 'Kingston' which premiered at the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival. At the prestigious Kingston College, paths collide between a first generation student, the son of a billionaire, a noncommittal situationship, and a Chinese professor. The semester will shake the identity of each, and of the university itself.
Carlos Key (Writer-Director) is a 24-year-old filmmaker based in New York. Spending early childhood in China
and Chile, he gained an early fascination with languages and cross-cultural narratives. He
continued to develop this passion through filmmaking in the following years, and pursued East
Asian Studies with a focus on Chinese at Columbia University.Carlos and his now long-term creative partner Kalijah Rowe met in their Seattle high school film
club. Over the past eight years the duo have collaborated on over a dozen short films, with
multiple screened at festivals including SIFF and NFFTY. Their most recent projects were the
short film MARRIED TO THE GAME and the featurette MEMORIES OF MEAT, where they
honed their directorial style in a longer runtime format. Now, the best-friends-turned-co-directors
have completed their first feature-length film KINGSTON, where they seek to capture the trials,
tribulations, and general absurdity of their generation’s college experience.
Kalijah Rowe (Writer-Director)
Kalijah Rowe is a 24-year-old filmmaker currently based in New York. After feeling limited at his
film school in Seattle, he left to develop his style on his own terms. Producing numerous
experimental shorts and music videos independently, he consistently found himself drawn to
imagery with a surrealist texture as a tool for expressing what words could not.

Happy New Year! In this week's episode of the Black Girl Nerds podcast, we interview actor and filmmaker Nicki Micheaux.
