  3. [EP 428] Rock Stardom: “I Lost My Passion for the Music” – with David Barnett

    Show notes

What happens when the dream of becoming a rock star turns into a dangerous obsession with fame, drugs, and rebellion?

Author David Barnett joins Booked On Rock to discuss his memoir Foxtail, a revealing journey through Austin, Texas's underground rock and heavy metal scene during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Growing up inspired by The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, and the rebellious image of rock stars, Barnett formed his own band, Dome Factor, at just sixteen. But following his mother's breast cancer diagnosis, his pursuit of rock stardom became tangled with substance abuse, reckless behavior, and a deteriorating friendship with his childhood best friend.

Barnett shares outrageous behind-the-scenes stories, including a disastrous concert at Austin's legendary Back Room, a school performance that got him expelled, and a chaotic senior prom involving a police chase. He also discusses the influence of artists like Slayer, Static-X, and Lil' Keke, and makes a startling admission: at one point, he became more interested in being a rock star than actually making music.

We also explore celebrity worship, the darker side of rock-and-roll mythology, the emotional power of heavy music, and how writing Foxtail forced Barnett to confront his past.

It's a conversation about rock music, ambition, friendship, self-destruction, and the complicated road toward understanding who we really are.

  4. [EP 427] Paul Simon’s Graceland: The Story Behind the Music and Controversy with Kalvin Schmidt-Rimpler Dinh

    Show notes

Paul Simon’s Graceland is one of the most celebrated albums of the 1980s, blending American songwriting with South African musical traditions. But behind the groundbreaking 1986 album are fascinating stories of creative reinvention, unlikely collaborations, political controversy, and disputes over songwriting credits and royalties.I

In this episode of Booked On Rock, I'm joined by Kalvin Schmidt-Rimpler Dinh, author of Paul Simon’s Graceland from Bloomsbury’s 33⅓ Africa series, to explore the making of this landmark album. Discover how a cassette of South African accordion music inspired Simon during a difficult period in his life, why recording in apartheid-era South Africa sparked controversy over the international cultural boycott, and how musicians including Ray Phiri, Bakithi Kumalo, Isaac Mtshali, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo helped create the album’s unmistakable sound.

We also uncover the remarkable recording trick behind the famous backward bass solo in “You Can Call Me Al,” the meaning behind songs like “Graceland,” “The Boy in the Bubble,” and “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes,” and the contributions of Linda Ronstadt and Joseph Shabalala. Plus, we examine the songwriting-credit disputes involving Los Lobos and Rockin’ Dopsie and ask whether Simon’s collaborators received the recognition they deserved.

More than four decades into his career, Paul Simon reinvented himself with an album that crossed musical and cultural boundaries. Forty years after its release, Graceland remains a masterpiece with a complicated legacy—and this conversation reveals why its music and controversies still matter.

  5. [EP 426] 5 Rock Songs, 5 Dark Stories: The Music Behind the Nightmares with Courtney Skelton

    Show notes

What happens when five hard rock and metal songs inspire five dark tales of psychological horror, supernatural mystery, revenge, and redemption?

On this episode of Booked On Rock, author Courtney Skelton discusses his book Inspired, a collection of five short stories born from songs by Reign of Z, Bullet to the Heart, Eden on Fire, and The Almas.

Courtney reveals how the haunting emotions and lyrics behind these songs became gripping works of fiction. From a woman fighting back against a terrifying attacker to a troubled character seeking forgiveness, a kidnapping victim confronting the voices in her mind, and a mysterious presence reaching out from beyond the grave, each story takes its musical inspiration in an unexpected direction.

We also discuss the creative freedom the bands gave Courtney to reinterpret their music, his admiration for horror legends Stephen King and Clive Barker, Stephen King's complicated relationship with Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining, and the remarkable moment when a song by The Almas helped Courtney finish a story that first came to him in a dream.

It's a conversation about the connection between rock music, storytelling, psychological suspense, and the unexpected places creativity can take us.

    Featured songs and artists:

    • Reign of Z – "Cellophane" and "Whispers in the Walls"

  7. [EP 424] James Brown’s Funky Drummer: The Beat That Changed Music but Left Clyde Without Credit — with D. Leah Steinberg

    Show notes

What if one of the most influential drumbeats in music history came from a musician who never received the recognition—or compensation—he deserved?

Clyde Stubblefield, James Brown's legendary drummer, created the iconic groove behind "Funky Drummer," one of the most sampled drumbeats in hip-hop history. His unmistakable rhythms helped shape funk, soul, hip-hop, and modern popular music, influencing generations of musicians and producers.

In this episode of Booked On Rock, author D. Leah Steinberg joins me to discuss her book, Clyde Stubblefield: Rhythms of the Funky Drummer, revealing the remarkable life and overlooked legacy of the man behind the beat.

Steinberg shares fascinating stories about Clyde's early musical influences in Chattanooga, Tennessee, his groundbreaking work with James Brown on songs like "Cold Sweat" and "Funky Drummer," and his complicated relationship with the Godfather of Soul.

You'll hear about James Brown fining musicians during performances, the circumstances surrounding Clyde's departure from Brown's band, and why the legendary drummer found greater personal freedom performing in Madison, Wisconsin.

The conversation also explores Clyde's contributions to Garbage's 1995 debut album, including "Queer" and "Not My Idea," his influence on hip-hop artists such as Public Enemy, and the extraordinary story of Prince quietly helping pay more than $90,000 toward Clyde's medical expenses.

Despite having his rhythms sampled in approximately 2,000 recordings, Clyde struggled to receive the recognition he deserved. Steinberg reveals how his creativity, humility, and generosity left an enduring mark on music far beyond his years with James Brown.

Discover the untold story of one of funk's most important musicians and the drumbeat that helped change popular music forever.

  9. [EP 422] Did the CIA Write “Wind of Change”? Songs That Changed the World with Andrew Clarke

    Show notes

Can a song really change the world? Author Andrew Clarke joins Booked On Rock to explore the stories behind some of rock music’s most influential songs and how they became connected to political upheaval, social change, cultural rebellion, war, protest, and entire generations.

We dig into Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog,” The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son,” John Lennon’s “Imagine,” the Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen,” U2’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.,” Van Halen’s “Panama,” Midnight Oil’s “Beds Are Burning,” Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and Green Day’s “American Idiot.” Andrew also takes us inside one of rock’s strangest mysteries: was the CIA somehow involved in the creation of Scorpions’ “Wind of Change”?

Based on Andrew Clarke’s book Songs That Changed the World: Music of Resistance and Transformation, this conversation looks beyond the hits themselves to examine what these songs meant when they were released, why some have been misunderstood or misused, and whether music can still have the power to change culture today.

    Show notes

Beck has spent more than three decades reinventing himself, from the unlikely breakthrough of “Loser” and the sample-heavy experimentation of Odelay to the emotional intimacy of Sea Change and beyond. But behind the constantly shifting musical identities is a complicated story involving family, fame, Scientology, artistic freedom, and Beck’s lifelong ability to keep the person behind the music just out of view.

Author Josephine Riesman joins Booked On Rock to discuss her book The Last Temptation of Beck: The Untold Story of a Pop Messiah. We trace Beck’s unconventional childhood and early Antifolk years, the accidental creation of “Loser,” his relationship with his father David Campbell, the making of Odelay, Mutations, Midnite Vultures and Sea Change, and the role Scientology played in his family and personal story. 13. [EP 418] Black Dog: Rock, Addiction & Recovery with Erica Kent

    Show notes

Erica Kent’s debut novel Black Dog is a raw, darkly funny coming-of-age story about rock music, addiction, loss, and recovery in 1980s Boston. The story begins with an 11-year-old Jessica Ryder reeling from the murder of John Lennon, and music remains part of the soundtrack as her life becomes increasingly consumed by drugs and alcohol.

In this episode, Erica Kent joins Booked On Rock to discuss the personal experiences that informed Black Dog, why Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” helped inspire the novel, and how artists including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, and Jimi Hendrix became woven into Jessica’s world. Erica also talks candidly about getting sober at age 20, experiencing a relapse years later, and what that experience taught her about the lasting power of addiction.

We also explore why John Lennon’s death represented a loss of innocence for her generation, the connection between rock culture and substance use, why sobriety doesn’t mean giving up the music you love, and the idea at the heart of Black Dog: recovery isn’t a simple journey from darkness into light. It’s complicated, contradictory, and deeply human.

  14. [EP 417] 987 Album Listens: One Fan’s Quest to Rank His Classic Rock Favorites

    Show notes

What happens when you listen to the complete catalogs of 29 classic rock artists—not once, but three times each—and score every album along the way?

Aaron Belansky is taking on an ambitious classic rock experiment called The Review Board, listening to 329 albums across 987 total listens to determine his personal Top 10 classic rock artists. And he’s doing it all while walking—roughly 740 hours of music and an estimated 2,000 miles.

In this episode, Aaron joins Booked On Rock to reveal some of the biggest surprises so far. He explains why Led Zeppelin has climbed to No. 2 in his rankings, why Eric Clapton doesn’t hit him the way he once did, how The Rolling Stones won him over after years of resistance, and why Pink Floyd’s early catalog is hurting their standing. He also discusses rediscovering The Who’s Live at Leeds, hearing familiar albums differently after repeated listens, and whether we love classic rock because it’s truly great—or simply because we’ve heard it thousands of times.

It’s a fascinating experiment in music, memory, repetition and changing tastes—and a reminder that even the albums and artists we think we know can sound very different when we go back and really listen.

  15. [EP 416] Fleetwood Mac: The Breakups That Made Rumours with Andrea Swensson

    Show notes

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours wasn’t just born from heartbreak—the band members were living through broken relationships, new romances, creative tension, and emotional turmoil while making one of the most successful albums in rock history.

Music journalist and author Andrea Swensson joins Booked On Rock to explore the extraordinary story behind Rumours and the five musicians who somehow turned personal chaos into musical chemistry. We dig into Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks’ breakup, Christine and John McVie’s collapsing marriage, Mick Fleetwood’s role in holding the band together, and how those relationships found their way directly into the songs.

Andrea takes us inside the recording sessions and the creation of classics including “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way,” “The Chain,” “Gold Dust Woman,” “Don’t Stop,” “Songbird,” “You Make Loving Fun,” and “Silver Springs.” We also discuss Lindsey Buckingham’s obsessive approach to arrangements and production, Stevie Nicks’ songwriting process, Christine McVie’s often-underappreciated contribution, and the remarkable work of producers and engineers Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut.

Plus, Andrea explains the fascinating musical conversation between “Go Your Own Way” and “Dreams,” why “Silver Springs” was left off the original album, how “The Chain” was assembled from pieces contributed by the band, and what happened when Fleetwood Mac had to take these intensely personal songs on the road.

It’s the story of five musicians whose relationships were falling apart just as their music was coming together—and why, nearly 50 years later, Rumours remains one of rock’s most enduring albums.

  16. [EP 415] Rewriting the History of Rock with Chuck Klosterman

    Show notes

Chuck Klosterman joins Booked On Rock to explore a fascinating question: What if rock history happened differently? In his new book, Rock: A Mainstream Alternative History of Alternative Mainstream Music, Klosterman imagines an alternate musical universe where the Velvet Underground become one of the biggest bands in the world, the Beatles fade from prominence, Led Zeppelin become critical favorites instead of arena superstars, and the familiar story of rock and roll is completely rewritten.

We talk about how timing, critics, commercial success, failure, and cultural consensus shape the way we remember music. Chuck explains why KISS is his favorite band to think about, why Led Zeppelin and T. Rex make such an interesting reversal, how MTV changed our relationship with rock stars, why Lenny Kravitz becomes the ultimate rock icon in his alternate universe, and whether albums by artists like Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix possess an inherent greatness—or whether history teaches us what is supposed to be great.

It’s a funny, thought-provoking conversation about rock history, classic rock, music criticism, fame, artistic legacy, and why certain bands become legendary while others disappear.

  17. [EP 414] Rock’s Greatest “What Ifs”: The Decisions That Could Have Changed Everything with Mike Garam

    Show notes

What if some of rock history’s biggest personnel decisions had gone the other way? What if Eric Clapton had joined The Beatles, Slash had landed the gig with Poison, Richie Sambora became a member of KISS, or Sammy Hagar never joined Van Halen?

Author Mike Garam joins Booked On Rock to discuss Near Miss: Alternate Histories of Rock’s Greatest Personnel Decisions, a fascinating exploration of the auditions, offers, lineup changes, and near-misses that could have completely rewritten rock history.

We explore alternate timelines involving The Beatles, Van Halen, Poison, KISS, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Ozzy Osbourne, and more. Could George Lynch have replaced Randy Rhoads in Ozzy’s band? What if David Coverdale had joined Black Sabbath? Could Rory Gallagher have become a Rolling Stone? And what might have happened if John Bonham or Bon Scott had lived?

Along the way, Mike examines more than who might have joined which band. We follow the ripple effects—the albums that might never have existed, the songs that could have sounded completely different, the careers that might have taken another path, and why musical chemistry and personality can matter just as much as talent.

It’s a trip through the crossroads of classic rock history where one decision could have changed everything.

  18. [EP 413] Lynyrd Skynyrd: How Ronnie Van Zant Led Rock’s Most Defiant Band with Chris Salisbury

    Show notes

Lynyrd Skynyrd became one of the most influential and enduring bands in Southern rock, powered by the songwriting, vision, and uncompromising leadership of Ronnie Van Zant. In this episode of Booked On Rock, author Chris Salisbury joins me to explore the story behind Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic albums and songs, from their difficult early years in Jacksonville to the creation of “Free Bird,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Simple Man,” “Saturday Night Special,” and more.

Chris shares fascinating stories about Ronnie Van Zant’s leadership and songwriting, the development of Skynyrd’s legendary three-guitar attack, Al Kooper’s role in shaping the early records, Billy Powell’s distinctive piano work, and the arrival of Steve Gaines. We also dig into the conflicting stories behind the famous ending of “Free Bird,” what “Sweet Home Alabama” was really saying, and how a band with relatively little formal musical training created arrangements of remarkable complexity.

We also examine the tragedy surrounding 1977’s Street Survivors, Ronnie’s eerie predictions that he wouldn’t live to see 30, and the question of what Lynyrd Skynyrd might have become had the plane crash never happened. Finally, Chris discusses the band’s return with Johnny Van Zant, the music of the post-1987 era, and why defiance may be the single quality that best explains Lynyrd Skynyrd’s lasting appeal.

  19. [EP 412] Metallica: The Best, Worst & Most Overrated Albums with Martin Popoff

    Show notes

Metallica’s journey from underground thrash pioneers to the biggest metal band in the world is one of the most remarkable stories in rock history. In this episode of Booked On Rock, acclaimed rock author and historian Martin Popoff returns to discuss his new book, Metallica: Album by Album, and take a critical look at the records that defined—and sometimes divided—the band’s audience.

We go album by album through Metallica’s career, from the raw aggression of Kill ’Em All and the breakthrough songwriting of Ride the Lightning to Master of Puppets, …And Justice for All, and the massive commercial transformation of 1991’s Metallica (The Black Album). Martin explains why he prefers Ride the Lightning to Master of Puppets, questions whether the Black Album deserves its towering reputation, and discusses how Cliff Burton’s death changed the band’s story.

We also tackle the controversial Load and Reload era, Bob Rock’s influence, the much-maligned St. Anger, Metallica’s return to thrash on Death Magnetic, and the band’s later work on Hardwired… to Self-Destruct and 72 Seasons. Martin offers his takes on Lars Ulrich’s drumming, Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield’s extraordinary riff writing, Metallica’s willingness to change, and whether some of those changes crossed the line into “selling out.”

Plus, Martin reveals his picks for Metallica’s best and worst albums, most underrated and overrated records, best post-Black Album material, and the five songs he’d give someone discovering Metallica for the first time.

If you’re a Metallica fan—or simply fascinated by how four musicians took thrash metal from the underground to stadiums around the world—this is a deep dive into more than four decades of Metallica history.

  20. [EP 411] Paul Weller: The Ever-Changing Man with Kevin Sedelmeier

    Show notes

Paul Weller has spent more than four decades refusing to stand still. From his rise with The Jam and the musical experimentation of The Style Council to an acclaimed solo career, Weller has continually reinvented his sound while remaining rooted in soul, R&B, mod culture, rock, and classic British songwriting.

Author Kevin Sedelmeier joins Booked On Rock to discuss his book Paul Weller: Song by Song, exploring the stories, influences, and creative choices behind Weller’s solo catalog. We trace his remarkable comeback from having no record deal in the early ’90s through Wild Wood, Stanley Road, Heavy Soul, 22 Dreams, Wake Up the Nation, True Meanings, 66, Find El Dorado, and more. Kevin discusses Weller’s songwriting process, his willingness to experiment, the impact of sobriety and collaboration on his later work, and why he has never been interested in becoming a nostalgia act.

We also explore the mystery of why Paul Weller never achieved the same level of success in America that he did in the UK, including the infamous moment when Jay Leno introduced him as “Peter Weller” on The Tonight Show. Ultimately, it’s the story of an artist who keeps asking the same question: What’s next?
