  1. Episode 635: Christmas at the Kringles, Wildwood, Everest: The Other Side, Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 603

    Show notes

It's Halloween weekend, so we've got a mixed bowl of fun-sized treats for you. Here's what we reviewed on our Breakfast All Day podcast:

    •

CHRISTMAS AT THE KRINGLES. A repetitive and relentless horror comedy about a seemingly bland, suburban family that's actually part of a murderous Christmas cult. This will end up being one of the year's worst films. Ron Livingston, Rachel Bilson, Thomas Lennon and Arden Myrin co-star. In theaters.

    •

WILDWOOD. So many people asked us to catch up with the latest from Laika Studios, and we're so glad we did. "Wildwood" is the longest-ever stop-motion animated movie, and it's a glorious spectacle. It's also very scary. Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Angela Bassett, Mahershala Ali and Awkwafina are among the strong voice cast. In theaters.

    •

EVEREST: THE OTHER SIDE. This documentary from Oscar-winning "Free Solo" directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi follows another extreme athlete pushing himself to the brink. Elite climber and skier Jim Morrison tries to be the first person climb the treacherous north face of Mt. Everest, then ski back down it. In theaters, and see it in IMAX if you can.

    •

MOVIE NEWS LIVE! So much to catch up on since we were gone last week, including the heartbreaking deaths of Patrick Stewart and Eric Bauza. Plus: "Cunk on Cinema" coming to Netflix, a Fleetwood Mac documentary coming to Apple TV, and the suggestive new popcorn bucket for "Dune: Part Three." Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

  2. Episode 634: You Can See Everything LIVE Spoiler Chat!

    Season 8, Episode 634

    Show notes

We had a great turnout for our "You Can See Everything" spoiler livestream at our YouTube channel. In case you missed it, here it is in podcast form for you to enjoy.

We touched on so much that we didn't want to ruin in our spoiler-free review of the Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim documentary, including:

    •

    Who's really telling the truth

    •

The way the movie shifts halfway through

    •

The film's awards chances (and whether it's even a true documentary)

    •

How it's possible that Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans have never heard of "Who's on First?"

    •

And Billy's shower scene, which earned the film an R rating

Let us know what you thought of the movie, and keep an eye (and an ear) out for more in-depth conversations like this, especially as we head deeper into awards season. Thanks for being here!

  3. Episode 633: Clayface, Wicker, Possible Love

    Season 8, Episode 633

    Show notes

It's a big, random, fall weekend here at Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast:

    •

CLAYFACE. Tom Rhys Harries stars as the Batman villain: a handsome actor who goes to extremes to get his looks back after a vengeful mob boss cuts up his face. This is super gnarly. Co-starring Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan. In theaters.

    •

WICKER. Alexander Skarsgård is the perfect man: loving, kind and attentive to his wife's needs. He also happens to be made out of wicker in this sweetly raunchy fairy tale. Olivia Colman is delightful as the lonely fisherwoman who wishes him into existence. In theaters.

    •

POSSIBLE LOVE. South Korea's entry in the Oscar international feature category is one of the year's best films. The latest from "Burning" director Lee Chang-dong focuses on the unlikely friendship that forms between two couples -- one wealthy, one working-class. In select theaters now before streaming on Netflix Nov. 6.

No Movie News LIVE! today, but join us next week for a live spoiler chat about YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING. Tuesday at Noon Pacific at our YouTube channel. Here's our non-spoiler review. Hope to see you!

  4. Episode 632: La Bola Negra, Ken Russell's The Devils (1971), Carrie (1976), Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 632

    Show notes

It's Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday here at Breakfast All Day.

We've already reviewed the big movie everyone's talking about this week, the Elizabeth Holmes documentary "You Can See Everything." And as for "Street Fighter," Alonso did a quick out-of-the-theater reaction.

But there are always plenty of new movies to discuss. Here's what we reviewed on our latest episode:

    •

LA BOLA NEGRA. It's a sweeping historical drama and a queer Spanish romance. And it was a very big deal at this year's Cannes Film Festival, where the directors, known collectively as Los Javis, won the top prize. Playing in theaters now before streaming on Netflix starting Dec. 2.

    •

KEN RUSSELL'S THE DEVILS (1971). The fully restored director's cut of this highly controversial British drama is finally out the way Ken Russell intended. We'd never seen it before but we understand why so many people have found this story of religion, sex and power so shocking. Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed star. In theaters for a limited run.

    •

CARRIE (1976). With the "Carrie" miniseries streaming on Prime Video, we wanted to go back and review the original Brian De Palma film, which was the first-ever Stephen King adaptation. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie are chilling, and we're a sucker for a split diopter shot. Make sure to check out our "Carrie" recaps, right here at our Patreon.

    •

MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Alonso is on the East Coast, so he was coming to us from the future. Among the topics we discussed were the celebrity support for "Digger," the trailer for Ben Shapiro's star-studded "Confessions," Steven Soderbergh helping Matt Reeves finish "The Batman Part II," and the whole Kelly Clarkson/Brooklyn toy store fiasco. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

  5. Episode 631: You Can See Everything (NO Spoilers!), Musk, Other Mommy, Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 631

    Show notes

October means all the movies are very long and important. Well, most of them are. Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast.

    •

YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING. This is a very early look at the Elizabeth Holmes documentary, so it's a non-spoiler review, because there's a lot you're going to want to discover and discuss on your own. Directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim spent a month with the disgraced Theranos founder in her home before she had to report to prison for defrauding investors. The results are mesmerizing. In theaters Oct. 16, then come to our LIVE spoiler chat on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Noon Pacific and we'll really get into it.

    •

MUSK. It's the Elon Musk documentary. And it's four hours long (with an intermission). Veteran documentarian Alex Gibney doesn't break any new ground, but he synthesizes everything about the world's richest man and the damage he's caused, and the totality of it is damning. In theaters now.

    •

OTHER MOMMY. Universal didn't screen this Jessica Chastain horror movie for critics before opening day, which is never a good sign. But Alonso ran out and saw it Friday morning and shared a few thoughts afterward. You're welcome! In theaters now.

    •

MOVIE NEWS LIVE. A great turnout today to discuss the movies we mentioned above, plus the Paramount/Warner Bros. merger being finalized, a "Crazy Rich Asians" TV series in the works, and the death of Eva Marie Saint at age 102. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

  6. Episode 630: The Social Reckoning, Fjord, Digger LIVE Spoiler Chat

    Season 8, Episode 630

    Show notes

It's a big midweek episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast. Here's what we've got for you this time:

    •

THE SOCIAL RECKONING. Aaron Sorkin's follow-up to David Fincher's searing 2010 drama "The Social Network" focuses on Facebook -- and its founder -- from a different angle. This one's more of a journalistic procedural, and we don't agree on it. Starring Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madson, Betty Gilpin, Wunmi Mosaku, Bill Burr, and Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. In theaters this weekend.

    •

FJORD. This thought-provoking Cannes Palme d'Or winner from Romanian writer-director Cristian Mungiu is the kind of movie you'll want to have a conversation about afterward. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve star as a religious couple who move with their five children to a small Norwegian town and find themselves under scrutiny. In theaters this weekend.

    •

DIGGER LIVE SPOILER CHAT. We get into all the twists we didn't want to ruin in our non-spoiler review. What's really happening in Alejándro G. Iñárritu's broad satire? Who is Tom Cruise really playing? Lots of strong opinions out there on this film, even though it tanked at the box office. Listen and share your thoughts.

See you Friday for reviews of "You Can See Everything," "Musk" and "Animals." Thanks for being here!

    55 min
  7. Episode 629: Digger (NO Spoilers!), Verity, Heart of the Beast, East of Eden (1955), Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 629

    Show notes

A ridiculously huge episode of Breakfast All Day to kick off October. Here's what we reviewed this week:

    •

DIGGER. Tom Cruise teams up with Alejandro G. Iñárritu for a massive, cacophonous climate change parable. We couldn't stand it, but we were also in awe of its cinematography and production design. Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller and Jesse Plemons co-star. In theaters. And once you've seen the movie, come to our LIVE spoiler chat at our YouTube channel on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Noon Pacific.

    •

VERITY. Slick, twisty trash for suburban moms, or anyone who enjoys a glass of wine with a movie. (That's a compliment, by the way.) Based on the novel by Colleen Hoover ("It Ends With Us"). Starring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett and a monstrous midcentury-modern house that's essentially a character in itself. In theaters.

    •

HEART OF THE BEAST. Last week was so busy that we couldn't get to this Brad Pitt adventure movie, but we liked it so much that we wanted to catch up with it. Pitt stars as a retired special forces officer who fights to survive in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. But the real star is his trusty German shepherd and best friend, the magnificent Odin. In theaters.

    •

EAST OF EDEN (1955). With Zoe Kazan's miniseries treatment of the classic John Steinbeck novel streaming now on Netflix. we wanted to revisit the original film that her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed. This is the movie that put James Dean on the map, and you can see all that beautiful, tormented potential on display. Catch our "East of Eden" recaps here on our Patreon.

    •

MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Always a lot to discuss, including early "Digger" reactions and box office, the latest in the Paramount/Warner Bros. merger, new movies from Curry Barker and Zach Cregger, and a "Fast & Furious" series in the works at Paramount+. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

  8. Episode 628: Primetime, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, You Had to Be There, Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 628

    Show notes

We are in the thick of fall movie season now, and you're here with us. Here's what we reviewed on this week's episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast.

    •

PRIMETIME. Robert Pattinson IS Chris Hansen, host of the NBC series "To Catch a Predator" in the early aughts. The film is lurid and Pattinson gives an enjoyably garish performance. In theaters.

    •

YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER. Mahershala Ali stars as a devoutly Muslim hitman trying to find milk for his infant daughter in a dangerous section of Houston. A true original. In limited release now and going wider in upcoming weeks.

    •

YOU HAD TO BE THERE. A fascinating documentary about the 1972 Toronto production of "Godspell." Name a Canadian comedian whose work you like, and they probably got their start here. In theaters.

    •

MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Lots to discuss as always, including early reactions to "Digger," trailers for "Musk," "Clayface" and "You Can See Everything," and the state of the Paramount/Warner Bros. merger. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

  9. Episode 627: Resident Evil (2026), The Uprising, The History of Concrete, Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 627

    Show notes

What a weird week! But we're here for all of it, for you, at Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed on our latest episode.

    •

RESIDENT EVIL (2026). A "Resident Evil" movie that's actually good? Zach Cregger has done the impossible. You don't need to have seen any of the previous films, or played the video game, to have a blast here. This horror movie is insane and hilarious. You'll scream, you'll squirm. Austin Abrams stars as a medical courier having a very bad day. In theaters.

    •

THE UPRISING. We're catching up with this action epic from writer-director Paul Greengrass, which came out last week. Andrew Garfield stars as a man known only as the Ploughman, who leads the peasants' revolt of 1381 against England's King Richard II. Co-starring Thomasin McKenzie, Jamie Bell and Cosmo Jarvis. In theaters.

    •

THE HISTORY OF CONCRETE. If you enjoyed the HBO series "How To With John Wilson," you'll love this feature debut, which feels like an extended version of his low-key comedy in all the best ways. Wilson does indeed explore the history of concrete in his beloved New York City, but ties in numerous other ideas, themes and oddball characters in the process. We loved it. In theaters now in New York, opens wider in upcoming weeks. Find out here when it's playing near you.

    •

MOVIE NEWS LIVE! We went extra long on a number of topics including Ed Sheeran, the Elon Musk documentary, the Toronto International Film Festival, Duncan Sheik and Bob Mackie. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

  10. Episode 626: Buddy, Call My Agent! The Movie, Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 598

    Show notes

Three pocast episodes ... in one week? In this economy?

We had a lot to catch up on from our time away at the end of summer, and the arrival of September always brings a slew of new releases. Here's what we've got for you this time:

    • BUDDY. This twisted horror comedy came out a couple weeks ago, but this is very much our kind of movie, so we knew we needed to catch up with it. The film from surrealist Casper Kelly (Adult Swim's "Too Many Cooks," "Yule Log") is set in a kitschy '90s kids TV show that looks a lot like "Barney & Friends." But "It's Buddy" is about an orange unicorn who doesn't like it when the young cast members dare to question his authority. Starring Keegan-Michael Key, Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, and Patton Oswalt as a talking backpack named Strappy. In theaters.
    • CALL MY AGENT! THE MOVIE. The French comedy series is now a feature film after four seasons on Netflix. Everyone is back, but now the action has moved from a talent agency to a movie set. Alonso loved this show, but Christy had never seen a single episode, so it was fun to come at it from both perspectives. Camille Cottin, Laure Calamy, Laetitia Casta and George Clooney co-star. Streaming now on Netflix.
    • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! This was an especially somber day, given that it was the 25th anniversary of 9/11. But we hadn't done our movie news livestream in a few weeks, so we wanted to reconnect and reflect with our folks. Among the many topics we talked about were the Venice, Telluride and Toronto film festivals; the passing of Dolly Parton and Tim Curry; the secret Elizabeth Holmes documentary; Chris Hansen's response to "Primetime"; and the new concert film "Oasis: Don't Look Back in Anger," which is excellent. 11. Episode 625: Practical Magic 2, Practical Magic (1998), Hope (2026)

    Season 8, Episode 625

    Show notes

One more midweek pop-in because there's so much to discuss now that September has arrived. Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast.

    •

PRACTICAL MAGIC 2. It's the sequel to "Practical Magic." But can Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman still cast a spell on us, 28 years later? This time, they travel to England to try and end the family's centuries-old curse. Joey King, Lee Pace, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest co-star. In theaters.

    •

PRACTICAL MAGIC (1998). Alonso had never seen the original movie, and Christy only saw it when it came out, so this was a good opportunity to revisit it. Griffin Dunne's film was not exactly a giant hit with critics or audiences back then, but it's gained a cult following over time, which we try to understand. Streaming and rentable.

    •

HOPE. This crazy, overlong Korean horror movie from writer-director Na Hong-jin played at the Cannes Film Festival and is now out there for you to enjoy, as well. Something is rampaging through a small harbor town near the North Korean border, and a group of citizens and police officers try and stop it. We liked it for a while. In theaters.

    Season 8, Episode 624

    Show notes

We're back from our end-of-summer break with a quick little visit for you. Plenty to come now that September is here, but for now, here's what we discussed on Tuesday:

    •

ONSLAUGHT. Adria Arjona is a veteran who must protect her daughter and her trailer park from super soldiers who are marauding across the desert. Alonso says this is one of the worst movies of the year. From director Adam Wingard ("The Guest"), co-starring Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall ad Reginald VelJohnson. In theaters.

    •

IT ENDS LIVE SPOILER CHAT. As soon as we saw "It Ends," we knew we needed to do a separate spoiler conversation about "It Ends." And now that Alex Ullom's movie has been out there for a few weeks, we thought it was more than time. What's really happening in that car? We try to figure it out together.

New podcast episodes coming later this week, so stick with us as we head into the fall movie season. Thanks for being here!

  13. Episode 623: Coyote Vs. Acme, Boorman and the Devil, Fame (1980): Was It Great or Were You 8?

    Season 8, Episode 623

    Show notes

We'e been taking a little time off at the end of summer, but we'd never abandon you entirely. Here's what we've reviewed lately on Breakfast All Day.

    • COYOTE VS. ACME. Warner Bros. shelved this movie for the tax write-off in July 2023. Now it's in theaters thanks to Ketchup Entertainment, and the fact that it's great is the best revenge. Will Forte, Lana Condor, John Cena and all your favorite Looney Tunes characters star in this hilarious live action/animation hybrid.
    • BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL. If you love movies about making movies -- especially movies that are notorious flops -- you'll enjoy this documentary about John Boorman's "Exorcist II: The Heretic." Alonso has to recuse himself because he's friends with writer-director-editor David Kittredge, but we both agree that this is an impressive and entertaining deep-dive into 1970s Hollywood. In theaters.
    • FAME (1980): WAS IT GREAT OR WERE YOU 8? It's our favorite game to play, where we look back at the movies we loved from childhood to see whether they still hold up today. This time, Christy picked "Fame," the musical sensation about students at New York's performing arts high school striving for stardom. It won two Oscars and spawned a hit album and TV series. But is it still great? We'll find out.

Thanks for hanging out with us during this in-between period. All the big fall festival movies are coming, so we hope you'll stick around!

  14. Episode 622: It Ends (NO Spoilers!), The Rivals of Amziah King, Don't Say Good Luck, Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 619

    Show notes

It's Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday, with some truly great new films. Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day:

    • IT ENDS (NO Spoilers!): It's been such a great year for indie horror movies from exciting, young directors, and "It Ends" continues that trend. The debut feature from writer-director Alex Ullom finds four friends stuck in a car on a seemingly endless road, post-college. This is a non-spoiler review, because we want you to experience this for yourself, but join us at Noon Pacific time on Tuesday, Sept. 8 for a LIVE spoiler chat at our YouTube channel. In theaters.
    • THE RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING: It's a terrible title for one of the best films we've seen all year. Matthew McConaughey is mesmerizing as a beekeeper and musician in small-town Oklahoma. Angelina LookingGlass is a tremendous find as the former foster daughter who comes back into his life. The less you know going into Andrew Patterson's film, the better. In theaters, but not for long, so look for it near you.
    • DON'T SAY GOOD LUCK: Sunny Sandler is charming in this coming-of-age dramedy from director and co-writer Julia Hart ("Fast Color"). She plays a teenager who gets the lead in her high school production of "Waitress: The Musical" just as her mother's cancer returns. Melanie Lynskey, Stephanie Beatriz and Steve Buscemi lead the strong ensemble cast. Streaming now on Netflix.
    • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Always a lot to talk about, even at the end of summer, including the death of Hayden Panettiere, "Dune: Part Three" tickets, D23 announcements, the latest milestone for "The Odyssey" and more. We won't be here the next couple Fridays, but join us again for our movie news livestream on Sept. 11.

  15. Episode 621: The End of Oak Street, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, The Wrong Girls, Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 621

    Show notes

An absolutely jam-packed, mid-August episode of Breakfast All Day. Here's what we've got for you:

    • THE END OF OAK STREET. Suburbia and dinosaurs and divorce! This isn't a Spielberg movie, but it sure feels like it. Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery star as a family who wake up and discover that their pleasant cul-de-sac has been picked up and plopped down in the prehistoric era. From writer-director David Robert Mitchell. In theaters.
    • TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA. We're catching up with Jane Schoenbrun's follow-up to "I Saw the TV Glow" as it expands into more theaters. Hannah Einbinder stars as a queer filmmaker who's reinvigorating a problematic horror franchise, with hopes that its reclusive, original Final Girl (Gillian Anderson) will star. Funny, thoughtful, self-aware and brimming with clever details. In theaters.
    • THE WRONG GIRLS. Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat co-star as stoner best friends who stumble across a mysterious substance that gives them unexpected powers, sort of? The feature debut from writer-director Dylan Meyer (Stewart's wife) is a larky romp across Los Angeles. Maybe it helps if you're high, too. Co-starring LaKeith Stanfield, Kate McKinnon, Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani. In theaters.
    • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! What a treat! The great Dave White (Alonso's husband) joined our Friday livestream, so this went extra long. Among the many topics we covered were the latest in the Paramount/Warner Bros. merger, Nikki from "Obsession" joining Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, Nicholas Hoult joining the "Harry Potter" series and John Oliver's soap opera run. Season 8, Episode 620

    Show notes

We're in a bit of an in-between space as the summer blockbusters are winding down but fall festival season hasn't quite begun. But we've always got thoughts on whatever the latest movies are.

Here's what we reviewed this week on our Breakfast All Day podcast:

    •

ONE NIGHT ONLY. It's "The Purge," but for sex. People can only do it once a year over a 12-hour period for ... reasons? We have lots of questions about this film's internal logic, as well as its general purpose. Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner star. In theaters.

    •

TONY. Dominic Sessa stars as a young Anthony Bourdain, making mistakes and pissing people off during the summer of 1975 in Provincetown, Mass. Directed by Matt Johnson, who also made "Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie" this year. This one, we loved. In limited release now before opening nationwide Aug. 21.

  18. Episode 618: I Want Your Sex, Sheep in the Box, Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 618

    Show notes

We already reviewed the big movie of the week, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," earlier this week. But other movies exist in the world, so you get Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday.

Here's what we discussed on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day:

    •

I WANT YOUR SEX. Between this and the Wham! in China documentary, it's an accidental George Michael theme week, but we're not complaining. Olivia Wilde stars as a caustic and quick-witted dom to Cooper Hoffman's eager and besotted sub. The latest from veteran queer filmmaker Gregg Araki takes place in the heightened world of LA's contemporary art scene. This movie is a hoot. In theaters.

    •

SHEEP IN THE BOX. A rare miss from Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda. His film explores some familiar themes about creating a family in unexpected ways, but does so in languid, superficial fashion. A couple in the near future brings a synthetic boy into their home to replace the 7-year-old son they lost. Sounds like a moving premise, but this never grabbed us. In theaters.

  20. Episode 616: Her Private Hell, Hadestown: The Musical, Movie News LIVE!

    Season 8, Episode 616

    Show notes

It's an accidental theme week here at Breakfast All Day. We love when those happen. We're in a bit of a lull for new movies between "The Odyseey" last week and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" next week, but here's what we reviewed for you.

    •

HER PRIVATE HELL. The first film in a decade from Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive," "The Neon Demon") has lavish style but it's totally inscrutable. Go for the clothes and the production design if you must see it. Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton and Havana Rose Liu star. In theaters.

    •

HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL. This is an extraordinary live capture of AnaÏs Mitchell's Tony-winning musical. All the stars from the original Broadway run are here for this London West End performance. If you've seen "Hadestown," you'll want to see it again in this thrilling, intimate form. And if you've never seen it, prepare to be dazzled. In theaters for only about a week. Find out more and get tickets here.
