Broadway Block: a podcast about the New York Rangers

With the home record much improved from last season, the Rangers took a complete nose dive in their road games, slowly giving up the lead in the Metropolitan Division. With a heavier workload than he's ever been tasked with, Garand has struggled and his most recent help has also encountered more injury luck, with James Reimer being sidelined almost as soon as he came aboard. The Rangers do get a little schedule luck, with just two games over the next week, so hopefully they'll be able to rest up in the coming days and regain their early season magic.

If you told me at the end of last season that the Rangers would be 7-3-1 to start the year with a perfect home record in their first 6 games, I would have signed on the dotted line. A lot can be made of them having a blunder to the Devils, and failing to score in the following game against Columbus, but there were always going to be growing pains. The reality is, when the Rangers are playing well, they truly look like a fantastic team. With the season already more than 1/8th of the way through, we're starting to see chemistry forming in a way that looked impossible just a few months ago.

After the devastating loss of Igor Shesterkin, the team has come back in an inspiring way, winning by a combined scored of 10-3 in their last two games, extending their home record to 5-0 in an undefeated run at MSG, and giving fans a reason to believe everything will be alright. Dylan Garand deserves a lot of credit, but a huge part of that success is the team in front of him and their willingness to put down the tissue box, and lace up their skates. They've built an identity, and been rewarded for their efforts. Now, can the New York Rangers take advantage of their schedule in the coming weeks and start making deposits in the standings to pay them dividends as the season grows on?

After one of the worst seasons in my 24 years of being a fan of the New York Rangers, the team goes through the offseason with grace and seems to have come out on the other side in better shape. Starting the year right where they left off, they were shutout in their opener but since that loss to the Bruins, the Rangers are 4-0 to start the month of October undefeated, and have gained a lot of momentum into this young season. Speaking of young, with the addition of Cole Beaudoin, the Rangers are now the youngest team in the NHL while boating the best record in league standings. After all we went through recently, Rangers fans deserve to look forward to watching a fun game.

When it comes to home openers, I don't think you could have made a better statement win than the Rangers did last night. Highlighted hugely by a goal from Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers absolutely dominated that game from start to finish. They did take a handful of untimely penalties, but they worked hard to get back to even strength and never allowed the game to slip away from them. The home crowd was a huge factor, and probably the loudest I've heard that building since they were playing in the deep rounds of the playoffs.

In a somewhat surprising last minute offseason addition, the Rangers went out and signed unrestricted free agent Eeli Tolvanen to a 1 year deal to round out what I would consider to be a great offseason. Tolvanen is a former first round pick who has eclipsed 20 goals before, is tough on the puck, and plays a physical brand of hockey. I think the signing will be good for the Rangers if they can get the most out of him and is certainly a low-risk move. As we get closer and closer to the season starting, it's starting to feel like this team has a real opportunity to improve their poor results from last year.

Fresh off recording an episode with Locked on Rangers, we delve further into the hot button topics of conversation this off season so far. If I had to guess, I would say the offseason moves are about 95% of the way there with Braden Schneider officially minting his new contract. We spend a decent amount of the show discussing the deal and how it changes thing for both player and team. I don't think 5.6m AAV is too far off, but I think most people expected to see longer term. Does the one year bridge deal provide an opportunity to see what you have in the former first round pick, or does the short contract show a more telling window into Schneider's future with the Rangers?

The New York Rangers had themselves an extremely busy weekend to kick off the offseason, and have reignited our hopes in potentially reaching the playoffs, and at the very least improving the result from last season. The draft started out with the selection of Alberts Smits, and a huge trade involving two first round picks for Pavel Dorofeyev, an elite scoring winger from Vegas. Then Drury came out with a flurry of moves to open up July 1st free agency, completely overhauling the defense as well as depth on the forward roster, plus a backup goalie. The '25-'26 season is officially over, and I can say for a lot of Rangers fans out there that this one is definitely one I'd like to forget soon. Despite a division rival winning the cup, a recently traded Ranger hoisting said cup, and moving down in the draft lotto despite having the 3rd worst record all season, the year was one of the more frustrating seasons we've had to suffer through recently. With the NHL Stanley Cup Finals officially underway, it's hard to process how quickly the season ended and that it's already June. In today's episode, we touch on the upcoming NHL entry draft, and the recent news that former Ranger Manny Malhotra has been appointed as head coach for the Canucks, which almost certainly means they'll be drafting his son Caleb with the 3rd overall pick. The domino effect from there is that the Rangers can more than likely pivot their focus at 5th overall to a defenseman like Carels, Reid or Verhoeff, with the top of the draft shaping up to be McKenna, Stenberg and Malhotra.
