Halloween Spooktacula Special
Season 1, Episode 67
Show notes
It was a dark and stormy night, the wind howled against the rain-speckled windows of Pierre's shed. Inside, three hooded figures gathered around a tea-stained table, pushed aside their podcast microphones and began an unholy chant. Lightning crackled through the brooding sky as, within the walls of the haunted chamber, the spookiest games were summoned forth.
That's right, it's Halloween week, and the Boys are back to recount the scariest moments of the year. Pierre's been haunted by late-night shopping anomalies, Sarah's spooked by their offshore adventures and Glenn's unnerved by revisiting his safe havens. Plus a long list of terrifying tales from the Discord.
But before all that, the Boys catch up on what they've been playing this week. Pierre has found such a Pierre game: maths and war. What more could the man want? Sarah's headed back to the 70s to get fired before things go awry and Glenn's got his adrenaline fix as he speeds around planets in a galaxy far, far away.

Terrible Times: Who’s Got it the Worst?
Season 1, Episode 66
Show notes
We've all had one of those days: just missing the bus, stepping in a deep puddle, pissing ourselves a little bit. But none of us have had the kinds of days that gaming protagonists routinely face. From severed limbs to shipwrecks, we subject our digital avatars to the worst possible experiences.
This week the Boys discuss the absolute worst of it. Crawling through sewers, being flayed alive, catching TB or living under a tyrannical Sims player. All bad stuff, but who has it the worst?
Before that, though, we catch up on what the Boys have been playing. Sarah's finally catching up on a sequel in one of their favourite franchises, Pierre's finding he's not getting the same hit from a cosy classic and Glenn's mildly underwhelmed but not surprised by an emerging sequel.

Side Quests Vol. 1
Season 1, Episode 65
Show notes
Much like side streets, side arms, side tables, side dishes and sidemen, can provoke surprisingly strong feelings. This week we're going off the beaten track, ignoring the main objective and tackling the good, the bad and the ugly of secondary storylines. We've got drunken foolery, farting pigs and complete letdowns. But enough about the hosts, on with the podcast!
As always, the Boys catch up on what they've been playing this week. Glenn's leaning into spooky season with not only a horrifyingly nostalgic trip to the Scottish Isles but also a video game-themed trip to the cinema. Meanwhile, Sarah's throwing tradition to the wind as they discuss a game they're planning on playing which is like "Breath of the Wild, but good".

The Eras Tour: Best Historical or Futuristic Setting
Season 1, Episode 64
Show notes
This week the Boys try to settle the debate raging across the country: which historical or futuristic period makes the best setting for a game? From early symbolic thought through to space travel across the outer reaches of the universe, gaming covers every era, but which one suits it best?
Before all that, we check in on Glenn to see how he's dealing with the social media backlash to his Crimson Desert comments and discuss perhaps the most impressive listener contribution to date: a functioning version of Pierre's Commander Sexy pitch. Links below.
Pierre continues his quest to get to the bottom of the sandpit, Glenn asks the big questions about The Sims and Sarah attempts to breed on a scale even Elon Musk would be jealous of.

Non-Fatal Flaws: Bad Bits in Good Games
Season 1, Episode 63
Show notes
This week's topic is all about the maggot in the apple, the flaw in the diamond, the suspicious stain on the clean-smelling underwear. That's right, it's the parts of otherwise great games that we hate. Disgusting sound effects, tedious intros, impossible tasks and unfamiliar mechanics have all weaselled their way in to the Boys' all-time favourites.
But before that, they catch up on what they've been up to this week. Sarah's been developing a nepotistic empire, Glenn's teamed up for a puzzling hike and Pierre's losing himself to one of the most satisfying games he's ever played.

The Worst Game Pitch-Off
Season 1, Episode 62
Show notes
If you missed out on the first ever Button Boys LIVE, don't worry, we remembered to record it! This week, the Boys had to pitch their worst-ever game ideas to an audience at Leicester Square Theatre. After a few minor technical hitches, Sarah came straight out of the gates with an avian-themed game for the gerontophiles among us, Pierre set out his vision for a drone-controlled dating sim and Glenn's idea... well, I think you need to hear it for yourself.
But before all that, they catch up on what they've been up to, with Glenn playing a nephew game, Sarah trying to lower expectations with the latest Marvel game and Pierre returning 18th-century warfare with the Swedes in his sights.

August Annals: What We've Been Playing
Season 1, Episode 61
Show notes
I'll let you into a secret. We've been lying to you all this time. Every week, when you think you're listening to the latest video game content your podcast app of choice has to offer, we've been pulling the wool over your eyes. That's right, what you've been hearing is literally weeks old.
But don't fear, because The Boys are back and fresh as hell. With a month off between recordings, they've created quite a backlog of games, so in this episode they're going to recap the heady days of August and early September.
Pierre spills the tea on what actually happened on his gaming PC's Odyssean adventure, Sarah's returned to an old nemesis and finds themselves much better acquainted than they expected and Glenn's been suffering from the munchies when the sun goes down.

First Impressions: Tutorials and Intros that Stick
Season 1, Episode 60
Show notes
This week we're getting to grips with the age-old tutorial. Whether it's boot camp, prison or simply being born every game takes its time to show you the ropes. The Boys look at the seamless, the absurd and the downright clunky attempts at tutorials.
But before that, we catch up with what they've been playing. Pierre's switched off his brain with a psychedelic throwback to impenetrable Japanese games, Glenn's having a religious experience with spooky puppets and Sarah's revisiting a game we all thought they'd given up on.

Getting the Ick: How to Ruin a Game
Season 1, Episode 59
Show notes
Have you ever found yourself enjoying a game and then BAM... you hit an ick? Something so minor but so off-putting that you just have to put the controller down and walk away.
This week's episode is all about those moments. The small things that games can do to really ruin your experience. From cringey box blurb and clunky dialogue to lame side quests and lewd camera angles, we've got ick covered.
But before that, we catch up with what the Boys have been up to. Sarah's been revisiting an absolute classic with a whole new perspective, while Glenn's been going extremely deep on his latest wildly addictive game.

You've Got to Be Kidding Me
Season 1, Episode 58
Show notes
We've all had those moments. You put down the controller, take a long, measured breath and express your absolute shock/consternation/contempt/awe (delete as applicable) with the phrase, 'You've got to be f***ing kidding me!'
This week the Boys relive their most jaw-dropping debacles. Whether it's realising they can't complete a game because of a terrible decision, treacherous save points, game-changing power-ups or the simple act of a bad throw, you'll find it hard not to feel their pain.
Before all that though, we catch up on their weeks, Sarah's been saddened by a clear statement on the climate crisis through the eyes of James Bond, Pierre's increasingly frustrated by Heavy Rain and Glenn's found himself surrounded by dead bodies and armed only with a notebook and a time machine. Standard Thursday for him, then.

One and Done: Games We’d Never Play Again
Season 1, Episode 57
Show notes
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there. And we don't like different. Or too much of the same. And that's why this week's episode is all about the games you play once and have absolutely no appetite to return to.
Whether it's outdated mechanics, not wanting to spoil their nostalgia or just because the games were plain terrible, the Boys examine the games they've known and loved but won't go near again.
But before that walk down memory lane, we catch up with what they've been playing this week. Pierre's been preparing for battle with the Button Boys Battalion, Sarah's taken a musical trip north of the border and Glenn's got into dentistry, or at least that's what I think he said.

The Future is Now: Times When Our Minds Were Blown
Season 1, Episode 55
Show notes
Every person who plays video games has had a moment when their jaw drops, their eyes widen and they find themselves dribbling onto their laps the sheer effort of comprehending the paradigmatic shift in front of them.
Ok, maybe not every person. Still, this episode is dedicated to those moments: the times when you just couldn’t believe what a leap forward games had taken; the times when you realised the future was now. From achingly beautiful vistas and hyper-realistic mechanics to dense world-building and the bits where your character, unprompted, scratches their bum, the Boys cover it all.
But before all that, Glenn tells a tale of utter humiliation and we catch up with what everyone’s been playing this week. Sarah's had a slight change of heart since last episode's theatrical hatchet job, Pierre's finally on board with Bond, and Glenn, of course, has found an indie game where he can do two jobs at once.

From Rags to Rupees: Money in Games
Season 1, Episode 54
Show notes
Unzip your wallets and loosen your coin pouches because this episode's all about the most filthy of lucre: money.
From septims to souls, in-game currency has been integral to countless RPGs, platformers and Glenn's favourite shopkeeper games. But how do you spend yours? When does it work, and when does money lose all meaning? Why does Glenn like being poor so much? And what's the vendor doing with all my cheese?
But before all that, the Boys catch up on what they've been playing this week. Glenn's wardrobe malfunction ruins a finale while Sarah's been longing for more skateboarding but has ended up at the theatre with a not-so-progressive Peach.

Good Boss, Bad Boss
Season 1, Episode 53
Show notes
This week's episode is all about bosses, from the good ones to the bad ones to the really, really old ones. The Boys recount the most annoying boss mechanics, challenging fights and memorable final encounters.
Before they get too bossy, though, the Boys catch up on what they've been playing this week. While Pierre has been enjoying competing online in an old favourite, Sarah and Glenn have been surviving two different types of zombie apocalypse: one tense and thrilling, the other deeply problematic.

Heartbreak
Season 1, Episode 52
Show notes
The rage, the desperation, the cries of "Why, God, why did you do this to my beautiful boy?" This week's episode is all about gaming heartbreak.
Hundreds of thousands of hours of gaming time are lost every year to power cuts, faulty chips and malevolent cousins. We all know that pain. Was it all for nothing? Well, this week, the Boys, in the safe space of the shed, share stories of anguish from their gaming lives.
But first, we catch up with what they've been playing. Sarah's commanding a horde of minions, Pierre's old habits have come back to haunt him and Glenn's trying his absolute hardest to stick to the beat.
This is our 52nd episode: a whole year of Button Boys. And what a year it’s been. From pubic maintenance and mayor gorillas to sewer assassins, incredible guests and amazing contributions, we’ve loved every minute of it.
We couldn’t have done it without you, so thank you, and here’s to the next 52!

Time Enough at Last: Games to Play When the World Stops
Season 1, Episode 51
Show notes
There is never, ever enough time to game. This week's episode dares to dream of a world in which we have nothing to do: no obligations, no commuting, no structure. Basically, 2020.
If the world were to shut down again, what are the games that you'd finally love to play? Is there an epic RPG you just can't see yourself completing, or an open-world multiplayer game that requires too much commitment? If time were no object, how would you spend it (assuming it's video game-related)?
But before those big questions, the Boys catch up on what they've been playing. Pierre's taken counsel on a dungeon crawler, Sarah finds themselves in a power struggle in Downing Street and Glenn's getting scarily interactive with his TV.

Slop Til You Drop: Shovelware, Clones and Cash Grabs
Season 1, Episode 50
Show notes
In this week's episode, the Boys scrape up the fetid sludge from the bottom of the barrel to see what absolute slop they can find. From clones to cash grabs, smut to even smuttier smut, they've braved the worst so you don't have to. But, much like their mudlarking counterparts, they've managed to find a few glistening trinkets amongst the detritus.
Elsewhere, the new Patreon Age of Empires playalong has begun, with one of the Boys being left out in the cold. Pierre's been going deep simulation on his favourite WWII game, Glenn's experienced the worst day in Australia that you can imagine and Sarah's been suffering from a bout of morality caused by our future Player 4 guest, Alasdair Beckett-King.
