  1. Nor'easter Destroys NC 12 + King Tide Coastal Flooding, & Halloween Forecast [Ep. 603]

    Show notes

The Carolina Weather Group delivers in-depth coverage of a high-impact week across the Carolinas as a destructive nor'easter and peak astronomical king tides batter the coast while severe drought tightens its grip inland. In this episode, Sam Walker reports live from the Outer Banks on the catastrophic damage along N.C. Highway 12 that has breached protective dunes, washed out pavement, and completely severed ground access to Hatteras Island. Further south along the Grand Strand, Scotty Powell provides boots-on-the-ground reporting from Garden City, South Carolina, documenting severe king tide flooding inundating coastal streets and neighborhoods. From Raleigh, veteran meteorologist Greg Fishel breaks down the synoptic meteorological setup, explaining the coastal low pressure system, persistent onshore wind flow, and stalled upper-level pattern behind the ongoing surge. Turning inland, Frank Strait analyzes rapidly expanding drought conditions and rising wildfire hazards across South Carolina and North Carolina, followed by a discussion with host James Brierton spotlighting the Columbia Integrated Weather Team (IWT) and its mission to unify hazardous weather communication between meteorologists and emergency managers. The broadcast wraps with a complete regional Halloween trick-or-treat forecast covering temperatures and sky conditions from the Blue Ridge Mountains down to the Atlantic beaches.🔔 SUBSCRIBE to the Carolina Weather Group for more live launch coverage, severe weather updates, storm tracking, and weekly weather podcasts!🌦️ CONNECT WITH US:• Facebook: facebook.com/carolinaweathergroup• X (Twitter): @CarolinaWxGroup• Listen to the Podcast: Search "Carolina Weather Group" on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen!Stream live storm updates 24/7: https://youtube.com/live/STPRDdhGiqU?feature=share📹 Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmhGiYbMDccQcdSjpf87nGg/join🧢 MERCH: https://carolinaweathergroup.qbstores.com/💸 LEAVE A TIP: https://streamelements.com/carolinawxgroup/tip🎙️ SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather🔔 SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://patreon.com/carolinaweathergroup💻 VISIT OUR WEBSITE: https://carolinaweathergroup.comThe Carolina Weather Group operates a weekly talk show of the same name. 9. Growing Up 9/11: What We Were Shielded From Bonus

    Show notes

What do you actually remember about September 11th, 2001? If you were a 10-year-old sitting in a fifth-grade classroom, the answer is likely a haze of fragmented details, strange rumors, and missing pieces. In this special 25th-anniversary retrospective, host James Brierton reunites with his former Long Island classmates—Alejandra Spoonley, Nanci Helmle and Dominic Siggilino — along with their fifth-grade teacher, Mr. Jeff Netter, and family members who were in lower Manhattan that morning. Together, they sit down to untangle false memories, compare notes, and solve a 25-year-old mystery: what was really happening behind the scenes while the adults in their lives kept on a calm poker face? By gathering these different perspectives—from a teacher in the corner listening to a boombox through headphones, to a child watching classmates vanish one by one as the classroom phone rang off the hook, to an uncle escaping the collapse of 7 World Trade Center—this episode pieced together a story none of them could fully see on their own. It’s an intimate exploration of childhood innocence, protective silence, community drama, and how we pass these memories down to a new generation.

  18. 1,000+ LIVE NC Traffic Cams! NCDOT’s New DriveNC App: Live Maps, Cam Feeds & Route Alerts! [Ep. 591]

    Episode 591

    Show notes

Tonight on the Carolina Weather Group, we talk with Kelly Wells from the North Carolina Department of Transportation about the relaunched drivenc.gov website. Wells provides a walkthrough of the new site, which features over 1,000 live streaming traffic cameras across the state. The site includes map layers for traffic congestion, road closures, incidents, road work, and weather events. Users can view real-time conditions for ferries and rest areas, and see the warnings currently displayed on highway message signs. The site also integrates weather radar, National Weather Service alerts, and weather forecasts directly onto the map. Through the "My Drive NC" feature, travelers can select favorite cameras, save routes, and draw custom regions on the map to receive targeted email or text alerts for road conditions. The platform also feeds this traffic data to navigation apps like Waze, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and TomTom. NCDOT monitors the roads using five traffic management centers across the state, which now receive proactive push alerts for traffic incidents. A Drive NC mobile app is also now available for download. Also in this episode, Sam Walker details traffic management on the Outer Banks, including the Barco diversion at the intersection of US 158 and NC 168, which is used during hurricane evacuations to divert traffic away from bridge-tunnels in Virginia. Frank Strait provides the Carolina weather forecast, tracking ongoing flash flood warnings and severe thunderstorms. He outlines an incoming heatwave that will bring high temperatures near 100 degrees and heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees, before a cold front brings cooling showers by Sunday and Monday. The panel also discusses the CoCoRaHS rain gauge network, a destructive 4th of July thunderstorm in New York, and Colorado State University's updated forecast lowering the season's prediction to nine named storms. 🤝 SUPPORT THE CHANNEL & GET PERKS📹 Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmhGiYbMDccQcdSjpf87nGg/join🧢 MERCH: https://carolinaweathergroup.qbstores.com/💸 LEAVE A TIP: https://streamelements.com/carolinawxgroup/tip🎙️ SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather🔔 SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://patreon.com/carolinaweathergroup💻 VISIT OUR WEBSITE: https://carolinaweathergroup.com 🌤️ ABOUT THE CAROLINA WEATHER GROUPThe Carolina Weather Group operates a weekly talk show of the same name. Season 590

    Show notes

The future of Carolina's first commercial radio station, WBT 1110 AM, seems questionable - at best. Big broadcast companies are moving away from news radio formats, with their regular weathercast formats. Some big stations are shutting down or moving off the dial. Even Canada's national weather arm is shutting down their verison of NOAA weather radio, with the United States agency examining its next steps for the over-the-air weather service.Where does radio go from here? We're talking with Johnny Caudle, a broadcaster, weathercaster and digital reporter based in North Carolina.
