Cast Me To Hell: A Horror Movie Podcast

A new season is upon us and for November, the boys will be delving into some cult classics.

Kickstarting the season is a promo-slasher crime/thriller that's based on a true story, The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

Shot in a strange documentary-ish style and feeling like a blend of several different genres, The Town That Dreaded Sundown stamped itself as a controversial cult classic with its true story origin and its notorious tagline and marketing campaign.

But how does this film stack up all these years later, and is this a cult that's worth joining

This week, the boys turn their attention towards Rob Zombie's highly controversial 2007 remake of Halloween.

This time the Myers family are a bunch of white-trash rednecks and we follow a young Michael as he commits his first murders, meets Loomis at Smithsgrove Sanatorium and ultimately begins his murderous rampage towards Haddonfield.

But how does Rob Zombie's Halloween hold up almost twenty years later? Has time been kind to this film or is it still a case of 'it it ain't broke, don't fix it?'

Find out as the boys discussed whether Rob Zombie's Halloween is Must See Horror

This week, the boys bring you their spoiler filled thoughts on the next instalment of James Gunn's D.C universe revival.

Setting aside the the cowls and capes, Clayface looks to tell the origin stories of one of Batman's most overlooked villains in a story that blends together Yuzna-esque body horror with anti-hero tropes of revenge and retribution. Telling the story of a Hollywood actor disfigured after wronging a gangster, James Watkins attempts to tell a slower-paced story of a descent into villainy as opposed to the bombastic anti-hero offerings that the studios usually churn out.

But how does this work in reality? Does this film have something to say or is it just skin deep and surface level?

This week's Must See Horror sees the boys take on the only film to win the Oscar for Best Picture and another adaptation of a book.

A film that heavily imbedded itself into the cultural zeitgeist of the 90s with iconic characters, often misremembered quotes and an on-screen pairing that keeps your eyes glued to the screen, The Silence of the Lambs is a tour-de-force film and often one that film snobs will point to as 'not really being horror'.

And that is where the boys come in as they ask the question - Is The Silence of the Lambs Must See Horror

This week's Must See Horror sees the boys put John Carpenter's 1980 ghost story The Fog under the microscope.

On the eve of Antonio Bay's centennial celebration, a thick fog rolls into town dredging up long forgotten sinister secrets. Featuring a cast of classic Carpenter collaborators, some eerie liminal settings and a soundtrack that'll sound goosebumps marching down your back, The Fog is a film thick with atmosphere and vibes.

But does this film belong in the elusive Must See Horror club

Spooky Season has arrived and with it the boys turn their attention to some horror classics.

Revisiting their Must See Horror Season, the boys work their way through the decades and discuss some of the halloween heavy hitters and whether they belong in the elusive Must See Horror club.

The Swinging Sixties brings us Alfred Hitchcock's adaptation of Robert Bloch's psychological horror Psycho as we discuss mummy issues, 60s conventions and our history with this genre classic.

But does Psycho belong in the Must See Horror club

Spooky Season is upon us but we've got one more Video Nasty up our sleeve, as we look at the highly controversial Antropophagus, also known as Antropophagus: The Beast, The Grim Reaper and The Savage Islands.

From the twisted mind of Joe D'Amato who made more horror/sci-fi/spaghetti westerns/erotic movies than you can shake a stick at, Antropophagus is a film that stamped itself into the annals of the Video Nasty era with some rather interesting scenes.

But what else is there? Is this an Italian horror worth checking, or is this just people bumbling around on an abandoned Greek island until someone gets slain?

The boys are getting satanic this week as they cover Evilspeak.

Featuring Mr Clint Howard as a teen outcast at a military boarding school, Evilspeak is a Carrie-esque tale of black magic, 80s computers, hazing and hogs. Featuring some controversial occult leanings and some good old fashioned gore, this film earned some high praise from Anton LaVey himself.

But forget Satanic leaders, what do the Cast Me To Hell boys think about this wacky film

Zach Cregger has unleashed his Resident Evil adaptation and the world is torn!

Featuring a completely fresh story and set of characters, this adaptation attempts to capture the survival horror elements and focus more on the strange and sickening mutations.

But how does this stack up? Can you make a Resident Evil adaptation without the iconic characters and moments? Are vibes alone enough to build the basis of an interesting and engaging adaptation?

Wake up honey, it's time for another Resident Evil reboot! This time, Zach Cregger steps up to the plate with his own interpretation on the iconic survival-horror video game series.

Following Austin Abraham's Bryan as he sets out on a mission to transport some important cargo through the isolated Arklay Mountains and into the famous Raccoon City, Zach Cregger's take on Resident Evil promises a focus on the mutations, the atmosphere and the survival aspects of this beloved franchise.

But how does this adaptation stack up? After a whole franchise, a second reboot and a short-lived Netflix adaptation, have fans of the franchise got something that finally gives the thrills, kills and chills of the video games series?

This week, the boys are getting gruesome as they cover I Spit On Your Grave.

One of the iconic films that pioneered the controversial rape-revenge genre, I Spit On Your Grave is a film that earned its controversy with some shocking scenes and some wince-inducing kills. But how does the film handle the difficult subject matter, does it have any feminist angle like its supporters claim or does it have come off as exploitative

September is here and with it we start our Video Nasties season.

The first Video Nasty we look at is the extremely controversial 1978 mockmentary/film Faces of Death.

Dr. Francis. B. Gross attempts to lead us on a journey confronting the many faces of death whether it's violence, natural disaster, animals or whatever kind of stock footage they can attempt to recreate. The Cast Me To Hell boys have many things to say in response.

Is this a thought provoking piece of media or is it the kind of thing that 13 year old boys would watch at a sleepover and cackle at

Summer is drawing to a close and with it, our Summer Slasher Season has one more sorority to visit before September begins.

Released in the twilight of The Golden Age of Slashers, The Initiation follows a sorority pledge who is plagued by a reoccurring nightmare. Tasked with breaking into the local mall, the sorority pledges find out that there's scarier things than 80s fashion waiting inside for them. Featuring a healthy slew of kills, there's a strange euro-horror vibe to this that features some twists and turns that try to keep a stale formula fresh

There's pranks abound this week as the boys cover Killer Party.

Following a trio of sorority pledges who are on the cusp of their initiation, Killer Party is a real cosmic gumbo of horror-comedy-slasher-possession madness. There's pranks, pervs, guillotines and all sorts of weirdness in one party you don't want to miss.

But is Killer Party a fine bit of genre-blending, or does it leave a bit of a bad taste

This week's Summer Slasher Season sees us cover Sorority House Massacre.

In a film that borrows heavily from the Halloween playbook with a light sprinkling of Nightmare on Elm Street and some good ol' 80s euro-horror, Sorority House Massacre features a sorority pledge haunted by dreams, visions and foreboding as an escaped mental patient starts to hunt them down.

But is this just a reskinned Halloween for the 80s crowd or does it have its own merits

Our Summer Slasher Season is here, and this year we're hitting up the sororities for some slasher scares.

To kick start the season, the boys both give 3 sorority slasher recommendations to get you into the mood and give a little tease at a couple of the films to come this season. Robbie brings some 2000s cult classics whilst Seb keeps it classic with some 80s fun and an extremely deep cut from the 30s.

We've got one more Must See Horror before we kickstart our Summer Slasher Series, so we're looking at Peter Jackson's Braindead/Dead Alive.

Before he brought us the unforgettable fantasy epic of J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Ring's, Peter Jackson was getting up to some extremely gory weirdness with something that's a little Evil Dead, a little Monty Python and a little something we don't really understand.

When a Sumatran Monkey-Rat bites his mother and zombifies her, Lionel Cosgrove has got to do something? Stop it from spreading? Keep her alive? Shag a Latina? Truth be told, it's a horror-comedy that you've got to just sit back and experience.

But is Braindead/Dead Alive Must See Horror

Our Must See Horror features sees us cover one of the breakthrough horrors of the 2000s, and the first chapter in what would become a juggernaut of a franchise.

Another film which kickstarted the "torture porn" subgenre, but one that wears a bit more of its Seven influences on its sleeve, Saw is part gritty procedural crime thriller and part blood-soaked psychological terror. Featuring the birth of horror icon John Kramer/Jigsaw, a decade-defining twist and some wince-inducing scenes, Saw set the box office ablaze.

So, Listener, join us in our very own game as we ask - Is Saw Must See Horror
