Essentials: More Than Just a Camping Mug
Season 4, Episode 39
Show notes
Send us your Mediocre 5 Star Review
Welcome to the first episode in a brand new Essentials series, where Ade and Tim take a closer look at the pieces of kit that earn a permanent place in camp.
The series begins with one of the most used and often overlooked items in any camper's setup: the camping mug.
From enamel classics and budget buys to trusted favourites that have survived years of adventures, Ade and Tim explore their own camping mug histories and the journeys that led them to the mugs they carry today. Along the way, they discuss what makes a good camping mug, the importance of camp brew rituals, and why some pieces of kit become far more meaningful than their practical purpose would suggest.
Because a camping mug is rarely just a camping mug. It is the first brew of a cold morning, a warm companion beside a campfire, and often a quiet witness to some of camping's most memorable moments.
Grab a brew and join Ade and Tim as they discover why this humble bit of kit deserves a place in the Essentials series.

Send us your Mediocre 5 Star Review
Before we lit campfires, pitched tents or headed off on adventures of our own, many of us were inspired by somebody else's.
This week, Tim and Ade discuss the films and programmes that fuelled their love of the outdoors. From epic adventures and wild landscapes to memorable camping scenes, they reflect on the stories that made them want to leave the sofa behind and head outside.
As the nights draw in and darkness arrives earlier, the conversation also turns to a camping tradition many of us know well: settling into a tent and watching a film after the day's adventures are over.
Whether you're looking for your next outdoor movie recommendation or simply reminiscing about the films that first sparked your sense of adventure, pull up a camp chair and join the conversation.

As the seasons shift, so do our camping habits.
This week, Tim and Ade discuss what the arrival of autumn means for campers across the Northern Hemisphere. With colder nights drawing in and hot tent season just around the corner, it’s time to think about how your setup, gear and camping plans might need to adapt for the months ahead.
At the same time, our listeners in the Southern Hemisphere are heading in the opposite direction. While many campers in the UK are preparing for frosty mornings and longer nights, those down under are looking forward to warmer weather and a whole new camping season.
Ade also shares some practical advice for anyone getting ready to pack their gear away for a while. From storage tips to equipment checks, these simple steps can help protect your kit through the off season and ensure it’s ready for your next adventure when camping calls again.
Whether you’re preparing for winter, welcoming spring, or simply planning your next trip, this episode is all about making the most of the changing seasons.

Season 4, Episode 35

With the world seemingly going to hell in a handcart faster than you can say “Zombie Apocalypse”, Tim and Ade tackle a surprisingly tricky question: is camping actually prepping?
The skills we practise every time we head into the camping field can sound suspiciously familiar. Carrying essential equipment. Purifying water. Cooking outdoors. Keeping warm. Finding shelter. Being self sufficient.
So at what point does a camper become a prepper?
In this episode, Tim and Ade explore the similarities, differences and occasional overlap between the two worlds. Along the way, they discuss the camping habits, gear and skills that might leave some people wondering whether they’ve accidentally started preparing for the end of civilisation.
Whether you’re a dedicated camper, a seasoned prepper, or someone who simply enjoys a good campfire and a hot brew, this episode is guaranteed to get you thinking.

Imagine having the responsibility of designing the one piece of camping equipment we’re all obsessed with.
This week, Tim and Ade sit down with Jason Gilmore, tent designer at Vango, to discover what goes into creating the shelters we trust for our camping adventures.
From the first sketch to the final product, Jason takes us behind the scenes of the design process, revealing how new tents are developed, tested and refined before they ever reach a campsite.
Along the way, Tim and Ade also explore what their own dream tent designs might look like, proving that giving campers a blank sheet of paper can be a dangerous thing.
Whether you’re fascinated by tent design, curious about the camping industry, or simply wondering how your favourite tent came to be, this is a rare glimpse behind the canvas.

Camping Costs Nothing
Season 4, Episode 32
Show notes
Send us your Mediocre 5 Star Review
A bold claim. Some might even say a ridiculous one.
This week, listener and friend of the show Thom presents a detailed report challenging Ade and Tim’s long held assertion that camping costs nothing.
According to Thom, nothing does in fact cost something. It weighs something. It occupies space. And in some cases, that “nothing” can become so large and expensive that it requires a trailer, a van, or an entirely new storage solution.
Armed with evidence, logic and suspiciously thorough research, Thom puts the Casual Camping philosophy firmly in the dock.
Naturally, Ade and Tim respond in the only way they know how.Expect questionable mathematics, questionable reasoning, and a spirited defence of one of the show’s most controversial beliefs.
The question is simple:
Does camping cost nothing?
Or have we all been kidding ourselves?DISCLAIMER: Casual Camping Podcast accepts no liability and does not officially recommend any products or endorse any techniques discussed in an individual podcast episode or shown on Casual Camping Podcast social media accounts. This week, Tim and Ade head into the camping field at Brooklyn Grange Farm, a working dairy farm with a fantastic farm shop run by a mother and daughter team. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans.

Along the way, they share practical tips for coping with wet weather camping, keeping spirits high and making the best of a trip when the rain just won’t quit.
Because when the weather turns against you, it doesn’t have to ruin the adventure.

Sometimes things don’t go according to plan.
This week, life got in the way, schedules refused to cooperate, and Tim and Ade found themselves without a full episode ready for the first time in a long time.
Rather than leave you with complete silence, they made what may prove to be an even worse decision.
With a little help from Aye’up (artificial intelligence) and a complete lack of professional musical ability, they have created what they firmly believe is the next chart topping camping anthem.
Will it be remembered alongside the greatest songs ever written?
Almost certainly not.
Will it be stuck in your head all day?
Possibly.
Either way, this is the first and hopefully last time Casual Camping Podcast enters the music industry.
Normal service resumes next week.

When The Emergency Alert Went Off
Season 4, Episode 28
Show notes
Send us your Mediocre 5 Star Review
This week’s episode wasn’t supposed to feel quite so timely.
As much of the country faced extremely hot, dry conditions, Tim and Ade sat down to discuss a topic that every camper should take seriously: fire safety in the outdoors.
From campfires and fire pits to stoves, BBQs and anything involving a naked flame, the conditions had created a very real risk across campsites, farmland and the countryside. For Tim, the issue felt particularly close to home. Wildfires had broken out nearby, destroying homes and scorching large areas of farmland. It was a stark reminder that it doesn’t take much for a small flame to become a major incident.
Then, part way through the recording, mobile phones across the country suddenly sounded with a national emergency alert warning of the heightened fire risk.
What began as a camping discussion instantly became something much bigger.
This week, Tim and Ade talk about responsible camping during extreme conditions and why every camper has a role to play in helping protect the places we love.
Stay safe and happy camping.

This week Tim and Ade lean back in their camp chairs, (a few) beers in hand, fire crackling, and record straight from the field. It’s loose, warm, slightly chaotic, and absolutely soaked in that midweek magic — the kind you only get when you’ve snuck out for a cheeky local overnighter after work.
They dive into the art of guilt‑free camping: how slipping away on a Monday night can spare you that look from your significant other. The look that says “another weekend… really?”. By keeping it local, keeping it simple, and keeping it midweek, you can scratch the itch for fresh air and firelight without burning through precious family time.
Between the laughter, they talk through the joy of spontaneous micro‑escapes, the freedom of packing light, and the underrated thrill of being back home before anyone even notices you were gone. It’s honest, funny, and full of that familiar Casual Camping energy — two brothers around a fire solving life’s great camping dilemmas one sip at a time.

Send us your Mediocre 5 Star Review
This week Tim and Ade kick things off with a healthy dose of classic Casual Camping chaos — the kind of warm, wandering banter that somehow manages to be both completely off‑topic and absolutely essential. Before long they tumble into the main theme: how to make sure you don’t forget a single thing when heading out on a camping adventure.
They chat through the tools, tricks, and systems that actually work, from digital checklists to old‑school methods that stop you arriving at the campsite only to realise your stove, your torch, or your favourite mug is still sitting at home. There’s plenty of real‑world wisdom mixed with the usual teasing, detours, and one particularly ridiculous tangent where the show briefly transforms into the Casual Campaigning Podcast for no good reason other than it made them laugh.
It’s practical, playful, and full of that familiar energy — a mix of helpful advice and joyful nonsense that makes planning your next trip feel a lot less like admin and a lot more like part of the adventure.

In this episode, Ade and Tim take a step back and look at their micro adventure with fresh eyes. A few days have passed since their night ascent of Mount Snowdon — the climb, the camp, the sunrise breakfast — and now it’s time to reflect.
They talk through what went well, what they’d do differently, and how the whole experience has settled in now that the dust has been brushed off and the tiredness has faded. From the quiet moments on the mountain to the laughter that carried them through the dark, it’s a thoughtful debrief on what adventure really means when life is busy and time is short.
There’s honesty, humour, and a bit of perspective — the kind that only comes after doing something slightly mad and then having a few days to think about it. It’s a conversation about lessons learned, memories made, and the lingering satisfaction of turning a simple idea into something unforgettable.

Micro Adventure Part 2

In this episode, Ade and Tim finally put their plan into action. After a full day at work, they jumped in the car, headed straight for Mount Snowdon, and began their night ascent. What followed was a mix of tired legs, head‑torch‑lit paths, unexpected moments of calm, and the kind of quiet excitement that only comes from doing something slightly unhinged on a weekday evening.
They reached the summit in the dark, pitched the tent in the wind, and settled in for a few hours of cold, restless but unforgettable sleep. As dawn broke, they unzipped the tent to a rising sun spilling across the mountains, fired up the stove, and cooked breakfast and fresh coffee on the highest point in Wales. It was simple, surreal, and exactly the kind of moment that makes a micro adventure worth every step.
With the sun fully up, they packed away the tent, began the long walk back down, and eventually made their way home — tired, muddy, buzzing, and already talking about what they might do next. Throughout the episode, you’ll hear the real recordings from the climb, the summit, the early‑morning brew, and the journey back, capturing the atmosphere of the whole adventure exactly as it happened.
It’s the payoff to the planning, the reality behind the idea, and a reminder that even the wildest midweek plans can turn into something unforgettable.

The plan is wonderfully straightforward: finish work one evening, jump in the car, head straight to Mount Snowdon, climb it in the dark, camp on the summit, and wake up ready to cook breakfast as the sun rises over the mountains.
In this first part, they talk through how the idea came about, how they’ll time the journey and the night ascent, and what they’ll need to take with them to make the whole thing safe, fun, and just chaotic enough to feel like a proper adventure. There’s plenty of gear chat, a bit of route pondering, and the usual mix of enthusiasm, questionable logic, and the kind of silliness that always seems to appear when these two start planning something mildly ridiculous.
It’s the build‑up, the excitement, and the anticipation — all the ingredients that make a micro adventure feel real before it’s even begun.
