What Could Democrats Do With More Control?
Show notes
It's Election Day, and Pennsylvania Democrats are hoping to win a trifecta for the first time in decades: controlling the state Senate, House, and governor's office. If that happens, they could pass a slew of bills that are currently sitting in committee, from data center regulations to restrictions on Flock cameras and other automated license plate readers. Host Megan Harris and contributor Colin Williams run through some of the bills whose future may hinge on today's results, plus a few bipartisan measures that recently became law. We also discuss the truly staggering amount of money that candidates, super PACs, and other entities have spent on what is now the most expensive election in U.S. history.

‘Your City Could Be Better’: Who Controls Austin’s Autonomous Vehicles? — Presented By City Cast Pittsburgh
Show notes
When you think of Waymo, you might not yet think of Pittsburgh. But you should definitely be thinking of Austin, Texas. State law governing autonomous vehicles (AVs) supersedes city authority and prevents local governments from regulating AVs, creating areas that have become increasingly attractive to AV companies. City Cast Austin host Miles Bloxson joins Your City Could Better to talk about if this loose regulation is good for Texas, particularly its dense capital city, whether local benefit is a priority for manufacturers at all, and how cities can learn from Austin if a similar influx hits their streets.

The Steelers are heading to Paris to take on the New Orleans Saints this Sunday, but you don’t need to be in the City of Love (and tbh, you might not want to be right now) to get in on the fun. With kickoff at 9:30 a.m., it's a perfect excuse to trade in your usual game-day snack for some breakfast and Bloody Marys — and a bunch of bars around the city are hosting very early happy hours. City Cast's Megan Harris and Zack Durkin are talking about their favorite sports bars in Pittsburgh and what makes them special, whether it's top-tier wings, an enormous screen, or breakfast buffets.

Why Pittsburgh's at the Center of the Grocery Store War
Show notes
For better or worse, Giant Eagle has long been the main grocery store in town — beloved for its sheetcakes, bemoaned for its high prices. But that could soon change. Kroger is planning to buy the local chain, Wegmans and Meijer are coming to Cranberry, and Trader Joe's is allegedly looking to expand into the Strip District. It suddenly feels like we're at the center of the grocery store wars. What's going on? Could all this competition drive down prices? And can one region sustain so many chains? Host Megan Harris is with Chloe Jad, tech and retail reporter at the Post-Gazette, to discuss her reporting on these expansions and consolidations and what it all means for the average Pittsburgher who just wants some decent quality, reasonably priced groceries.
**This episode originally aired on August 10, 2026.
Since this episode first aired, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a letter to the feds asking them to take a closer look at the Kroger deal. Check out Chloe's reporting on the new development.

There's an urban legend that's left an eerie mark on generations of local kids: a story about a spectre with a glowing green face doomed to roam the highways of Western Pennsylvania. Show notes
Another Pittsburgh school year has begun — how are cell phones being handled? In Minnesota, one high school is demonstrating that a strict no-phone school day can work, and they’ve got the (mostly) positive feedback to show for it. City Cast Twin Cities host Sean McPherson joins David to talk about how St. Paul Central High School is succeeding at enforcing a phone-free school environment, the surprising ways that some students approach it, and how these kinds of bans can even affect adults like Sean.
Listeners, it’s that time again! Send us the dilemmas you’re facing living in a city, and we might debate them on our upcoming call-in show. Email us or submit using this Google Form.
