Why Every Organizing Influencer is Wrong | Clutterbug Episode #350
Show notes
Most organizing advice from influencers fails because it skips the fundamentals, so today is all about the 4 organizing basics I use in every home.
Hey Clutterbugs! This week I’m walking you through exactly what I look for when I walk into someone’s home. That includes why your organizing products might be part of the problem, why surfaces are hot lava, and my one-hand test for every closet and cabinet.

Confession: I’ve Been Decluttering Wrong in My Own Marriage | Clutterbug Episode #348
Show notes
Is your family sabotaging your decluttering, or are you the problem? Here’s how to declutter with your spouse, kids or roommates without fights, resentment or rebuying the stuff you tossed. Hey Clutterbugs! I have a confession. I’m a professional organizer, and for years I’ve been decluttering my husband’s stuff without asking him. Joe has bought the same can opener five times because I keep getting rid of it, and don’t get me started on the bread knife I didn’t know existed. So for the first time in 20 years, Joe and I decluttered together. He picked, I picked, and we agreed on things together. It turned into couples therapy and a romance novel in one. I can't wait for you to see the video on my main YouTube page in a couple weeks, but here's a sneak peek for all my Podcast listeners :) Want to be on the show? She Kept These Boots for 15 Years (then one move changed everything) | Clutterbug Episode #347
Show notes
Struggling to declutter things that make you feel guilty, ashamed or bad about yourself? Hey Clutterbugs! Today we’re talking about emotional clutter and how to finally let go of the “bully” items in your home: the shoes that hurt, the clothes that don’t fit, the expensive stuff you never use and the gifts you feel guilty getting rid of. A few weeks ago, someone called into Talk to Cas about a pair of high-heel boots she loved, and then broke both ankles before she got to wear them again. Fifteen years later, every time she saw those boots she felt guilt, shame and sadness. She called them her bully boots. And you guys… we ALL have bully boots. I’m sharing my own bullies (hello, little red sweaters and stupid, stupid sourdough stencils 😩), how to spot the stuff in your house that’s quietly making you feel terrible, and how to stand up to it . . . even if you’re a total people pleaser like me.

I Was Told I Was "Too Much" My Whole Life — Turns Out That Was the Point. Here's Why. | Clutterbug Episode #346
Show notes
Hey Clutterbugs! You know what we don’t talk about enough? ADHD success stories. We need to hear more about building a business (or a life!) when traditional productivity advice just doesn't work for our brains. In this episode, I sit down with my friend Ari Scott — ADHD entrepreneur coach, founder of The ADHD Entrepreneur, and someone who I immediately clocked as "my flavor of weird" the second we met — to talk about working with your ADHD brain instead of against it. Ari was expelled from school at 16, got fired from five jobs, and stumbled into ADHD entrepreneurship coaching almost by accident after a conversation during COVID changed everything. We get real about the shared backstory a lot of us don't talk about — the shame, the self-diagnosis debate, the "too intelligent to have ADHD" dismissals — and how reframing failure completely changed both of our trajectories. If you've ever been told you're "too much," this conversation is a reminder that the things people called your flaws might actually be exactly what makes you unstoppable.
Follow Ari on Instagram @the_adhd_entrepreneur, and check the link in her bio for her free masterclass, Starter Kit, and Accelerator program for ADHD entrepreneurs.

The 5 Step Trick That Makes Procrastination Impossible | Clutterbug Episode #345
Show notes
Hey Clutterbugs! Want to know how to stop procrastinating and finally start the things you keep putting off, from decluttering your house to chasing a big dream? In this episode, I sit down with Dana K. White, author of Procrastinators Get Stuff Done and creator of the No Mess Method, to break down her simple five-step anti-procrastination process for overcoming overwhelm, one tiny step at a time. Dana taught hundreds of thousands of people to declutter without making a bigger mess, and now she's turned the same approach on procrastination. We talk about why we really put things off, why "make a plan" is step four and not step one, and why so many of us spiral into research mode instead of taking action. I also get real about the book edits I've been avoiding, and we try the method on my own manuscript live. I'll also tell you the story of how I went from "this system will never work for me" to full-blown Dana K. White believer. Procrastinators Get Stuff Done comes out October 6th, and you can pre-order at danakwhite.com/procrastinate, where the pre-order bonuses include strategy sessions working through real projects!

Hack Your Home: Netflix Star Jess Banks on Storage Hacks & Why Your House Isn't Designed for You | Clutterbug Episode #344
Show notes
Looking for small space storage hacks and home organization ideas that actually make sense for how you live? In this episode, I sit down with Jess Banks — robotics engineer, furniture designer, and star of Netflix's Hack Your Home — to talk about why homes fail us, and the small, genius hacks that can fix it. Jess has an insane background — physics, robotics, running her own kinetic furniture company — and she brings all of it to how she thinks about storage and space. We get into why "messy" isn't actually a character flaw (it's just a mismatch between your brain and your space), how to design furniture and storage that flexes for visual vs. hidden organizers, and why she thinks almost every home is missing a few key pieces of smart storage. Why Changing Your Space Changes Who You Are (Not Just How It Looks) | Clutterbug Episode #342
Show notes
Hey Clutterbugs! Want to know why decluttering and organizing your home can change your entire life — not just your space? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Angela Duckworth, bestselling author of Grit and her brand new book Situated, to talk about the science behind why changing your environment is more powerful than "just trying harder."
Angela breaks down the Three Boxes model, and honestly, it explained my entire life back to me. We get into why willpower is overrated, why "just try harder" culture is kind of a trap, and why editing your space (not forcing more discipline) is the real secret to lasting change.
We also get real with topics like . . .
✨ My own decluttering "rock bottom" and how changing my environment changed who I was, not just how my house looked
✨ Why I think weight loss surgery is a situational fix, not a shortcut — and why shame around GLP-1s and other "easier" paths needs to go
✨ Getting diagnosed with ADHD at 40 and how surrounding myself with the right people (situational change!) helped me finally build the life and career I wanted
✨ Why grit isn't about intensity — it's about consistency, and why my whole "do it badly on purpose" philosophy might actually be a form of grit after all
If you've ever felt like you're failing no matter how hard you try, this episode might just reframe everything. Sometimes the answer isn't more effort — it's a better situation.

How to Make Your Home Feel Like YOU (Without Spending Money) | Clutterbug Episode #341
Show notes
Want interior design tips that actually reflect your personal style — not just another Pinterest trend? In this episode, I talk home decor, storytelling through design, and chasing big dreams with Olivia Westbrooks, interior designer and star of Hallmark's Home Is Where the Heart Is.
Olivia has been designing for over 22 years, and after her show gave her a taste of what's possible, she got real with me about what came next . . . and why she finally pulled her podcast equipment out of the box after three years of letting it collect dust (be honest, is yours still in the box too?).
We get into:
✨ Why the best-designed homes tell a story instead of following a trend
✨ How to figure out your personal style when you don't even know where to start
✨ Why doing something badly on purpose might be the fastest way through perfectionism
✨ Small, low-cost ways to make your space feel more like you today — no renovation required
✨ The moment Olivia posted her most "imperfect" video ever... and it became her best-performing post
If you've ever shoved a dream to the bottom of your list because life got busy, or you're stuck buying stuff that never quite feels you, this conversation is your permission slip to take one small, brave step today.

The Secret Minimalists Won't Tell You (because it's not minimalism!) | Clutterbug Episode #340
Show notes
Struggling to declutter your home without it feeling cold, empty, or boring? In this episode, I sit down with Myquillyn Smith — author, home decor expert, and the mind behind The Nester — to talk all about house hushing, decluttering, and creating a soulful, cozy home you actually love.
Myquillyn coined the term "house hushing," and in her brand new book (out August 25th!), she breaks it down into genius methods for quieting the visual noise in your home without sacrificing the beauty, coziness, and meaningful layers that make a house feel like you. We dig into backwards decluttering, quiet decorating, why every home has its own personality and soul, and how to actually stop stuff-shuffling into doom boxes forever (I'm looking at myself here).
We also get into: ✨ Why "less stuff" doesn't have to mean "boring beige minimalism" ✨ How to find your home's holding zone without creating a new mess ✨ The difference between decorating and soulful styling ✨ Why a cabinet of curiosities might be the answer to displaying your sentimental stuff ✨ How your organizing style (Ladybug, Cricket, Bee, or Butterfly!) affects how you should hush your space
If you've ever felt like your home needs to be either "minimalist" or "full of meaningful stuff" — but never both — this episode (and Myquillyn's book, House Hushing) is going to change how you think about your space completely.
Follow Myquillyn on Instagram @thenester and grab her book, House Hushing, out August 25!

20 Million People Have Taken My Organizing Quiz, and This is the Truth About Your Messy Home | Clutterbug Episode #339
Show notes
Hey Clutterbugs! Still confused about your organizing style? Over 20 million people have taken my Clutterbug quiz, but if you're still struggling with clutter, piles, and mess, let's diagnose you differently. Instead of asking what organizing systems work for you, I'm going to show you how to identify your style by looking at your mess.
In this episode, I break down the 4 types of messy: the Dropper, the Shover, the Spreader, and the Piler. I'll teach you how to diagnose yourself in 30 seconds by looking at your kitchen counter, bathroom, and entryway. Those high-traffic spaces reveal your natural tendencies, not your fantasy self.
I also share specific organizing advice for each Clutterbug style, answer listener questions about visual vs. hidden storage, and of course, give you a challenge to tackle while you listen. By the end of this episode, you'll know exactly what your organizing style is and have made real progress in your home.

Inside the Messy Middle: Why Progress Doesn't Look Like Progress | Clutterbug Episode #338
Show notes
Hey Clutterbugs! If you've been decluttering for weeks and your house STILL looks like a mess, let me be the first to tell you you're doing everything right. If you're putting in the work without seeing results, you're not failing. You're in the Valley of Disappointment, and it's exactly where you're supposed to be. After 17 years as a professional organizer, I've learned that progress isn't linear. You can work for days, weeks, even months without seeing visible change—and then suddenly, like magic, everything clicks. But most people quit right before they reach that breakthrough moment. In this episode, I'm breaking down the Valley of Disappointment (a concept from Atomic Habits by James Clear) and showing you what it looks like for each organizing style. Because understanding WHERE you are in the process is the difference between giving up and pushing through to that transformational moment. The Valley of Disappointment is temporary. Your breakthrough is right around the corner. Don't quit now—you're closer than you think. Go work on a space that feels stalled while you listen. Make it 1% better. That's all you need to do today. THE 5 REAL Reasons You're Drowning in Clutter | Clutterbug Episode #337
Show notes
If you've been decluttering for years and you're STILL drowning in clutter, you're not lazy—you're lying to yourself. After 17 years as a professional organizer, I've learned that your messy house isn't the problem. It's just a symptom of something deeper you haven't identified yet.
In this episode, I'm revealing the 5 REAL reasons people can't let go of their stuff—and spoiler alert: it has nothing to do with not having enough time, space, or help. Those are just excuses covering up the truth.
Until you can name your root cause, you'll keep decluttering the same stuff over and over again. We're not weeding the garden anymore—we're ripping out the roots.
Plus, a rant about ticks and Lyme disease, because I found one in my scalp mid-recording and now I'm convinced I'm dying.
This episode goes DEEP. I want you to do something mindless while you listen—vacuum, dust, fold laundry—because I need you to actually HEAR this message.
Stop making excuses. Let's figure out what's really going on so you can finally move forward.

🏅 Stop Waiting for Motivation—Let’s Clean Together | Clutterbug Episode #336
Show notes
Hey Clutterbugs! This is the ultimate dopamine-boosting, motivation-pumping, task-crushing podcast for when you need to clean, declutter, organize, or tackle ANY boring task.If you have ADHD, are neurodivergent, or just struggle to do mundane things like dishes, laundry, or cleaning - this podcast is for you. We need energy, urgency, and hype to get through boring tasks.
Doing mundane things can feel IMPOSSIBLE. I'm not even talking about a week's worth of dishes that's overwhelming - it could be three plates that just need to be put in the dishwasher. Why does this feel so hard? Our brain sees it and we have a big fat nope and we scroll TikTok instead.
The reality is we are not built to do slow, boring, mundane things day in and day out. We're hunters, not farmers. So all of these tasks can feel like absolute torture. But here's the truth: We're not lazy. We're just under-stimulated.
We gotta find the hacks. We need dopamine. We need to change our day from drudgery into tiny little punches of happiness and serotonin and reward so that we actually WANT to do these things. We feel excited and we keep going. This is how we become super productive people. So work with me as we make our way through six mini challenges in today’s podcast!

After 20 Years, I Turned My Biggest Decluttering Regret Into a 1-Weekend Solution—The Fastest Method | Clutterbug Episode #335
Show notes
Hey Clutterbugs! Struggling to declutter your home? The co-founder of a $300M clutter removal company who's cleared out 100,000+ homes reveals the #1 mistake people make, and it’s one I made 20 years ago. If you've been decluttering slowly for months (or years) and still feel stuck, this episode will change everything.
After helping hundreds of thousands of families let go of their clutter over the past 20 years, Nick Friedman (co-founder of College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving) has seen it all, from overflowing garages to full-blown hoarding situations. He was the very first entrepreneur ever featured on Shark Tank, appeared on Undercover Boss, and built a national brand from a borrowed cargo van in college. But more importantly? He's witnessed the exact moment people finally decide to let go . . . and what happens when they do.
I spent an entire year of my life decluttering my own home, and I still wish I’d called a dumpster and changed my life on day one. Nick backs this up with insights from the field, explaining why the "rip off the band-aid” approach can work better for some people than slow, painful purging.

In this episode, I sit down with psychologist Dr. Guy Winch to explore how failure, rejection, guilt, and loss create invisible barriers that make decluttering feel impossible.
Dr. Guy Winch, bestselling author of Emotional First Aid and one of the most-watched TED speakers of all time, joins me to discuss why we treat physical cuts and scrapes immediately but ignore our emotional wounds until they become infected, festering problems. We dive deep into the psychology behind why some people feel paralyzed by clutter, why getting rid of a chipped mug can trigger overwhelming guilt, and how past failures convince us we'll never be organized.
This episode is perfect for anyone who feels like they've been fighting clutter their whole life, who beats themselves up for being wasteful, or who can't seem to take action because past failures have left them feeling helpless. It's time to stop ignoring your emotional wounds and start practicing emotional hygiene. Just like brushing your teeth, but for your mental health!

After 45 Years: What Nobody Tells You About Adult Friendships (Stop Doing This) | Clutterbug Episode #333
Show notes
Hey Clutterbugs! Making friends as an adult is hard, especially when you have ADHD, struggle with loneliness, or feel like you have people in your life but still feel alone. In this episode, I'm breaking down the 5 types of friendships you actually need for your mental health: the Cheerleader, the Challenger, the Collaborator, the Comfort Friend, and the Connector.
I'm getting really vulnerable today about how badly I suck at making and maintaining friendships, why ADHD makes it even harder (object permanence, rejection sensitivity, social battery—all of it), and how growing up in an emotionally unavailable home taught me to ghost people who actually like me. If you've ever felt like friendships are exhausting work, or you're not sure what type of friend you're missing, this episode is for you.
And just like your closet, your relationships need an audit. Which of the 5 types are you missing? Which one are you for the people you love? And how do you actually make new friends as a grown-up without it feeling awkward and terrible?
💬 Tell me in the comments: Which of the 5 types of friends are you missing? And which type of friend are you?

The Viral Swedish Organizing Trend Nobody Knows About (5 Minute Method) | Clutterbug Podcast #332
Show notes
Struggling to keep your home organized? Learn the Swedish secret to a clutter-free, beautiful home: move just 5 things a day. Sound too easy? I thought so too.
In this episode, I'm breaking down the viral "5 things Swedes move daily” post, maybe you’ve seen it on your feeds? But I'm revealing what ACTUALLY works. Plus how you can use this simple method to declutter, beautify, and transform your space without overwhelm.
I fell down a rabbit hole after seeing a sketchy Instagram ad promising life-changing Swedish organizing secrets (spoiler: it was a scam). But the research led me to something real: the Swedish concepts of lagom, döstädning, and the power of micro-tasks. I'm combining these with my "Power of Pretty" philosophy to show you how moving just 5 things a day can help you declutter, redesign, and fall in love with your home again.
I'm sharing real examples from my own home (hello, dirty soda bar!) and from recent client makeovers, plus answering your questions about action files, downsizing, and organizing for different Clutterbug styles.Ready to stop overwhelming yourself and start making real progress? Let’s get moving, Clutterbugs!
