Cut Outs
Mark Farrell is just some guy - a guy who has been in far too many bands. Which bands? None you've heard of. And that's the point. He gets it. Mark knows what it is to lug gear, and play to half-empty rooms. And all these years later, Mark has never stopped rooting for the unsung musicians who never got the break they deserved. He haunts record stores looking for lost alt-rock treasures, unearthing DIY releases and short runs of great records that went largely unspun. Quite simply, Mark is on a mission to rescue the best indie albums from the discount bins of history.

Hypnolovewheel
Season 4, Episode 7
Show notes
On this episode of Cut Outs, I talk with the boys in Hypnolovewheel about their 1991 album, Space Mountain. While I usually find an album and then find the band, none of that happened this time around. I've had this CD for decades, and it's a good thing...because the band found me. We discuss past recordings, MTV cred, and current projects. And Book of Love creeps in there somewhere, for some reason.

Quincy
Season 4, Episode 6
Show notes
On this episode of Cut Outs, I talk with Gerald of the power-pop band Quincy about their 1980 self-titled debut album. This is a fascinating story, and is a good look at what it was to be an up and coming band in that era. We talk about big name clubs, giant record companies, and lawsuits galore. Gerald was very generous with his time. So much so the we don't discuss the record until the list ten minutes. Okay, maybe a little before that, but not by much.

The Airport 77s
Season 4, Episode 5
Show notes
On this episode of Cut Outs, I talk with Andy of the Silver Spring, MD band The Airport 77s about their 2025 release, Don't Let Go. This album is power-pop gold! The first time I saw them live was autumn, in a field, at a park, at dusk...so that may have something to do with me being all in. I don't know. Andy and I dive deep into power-pop history, and call out a lot of 80's bands that never got their due. A fun conversation all around.

Celebration Summer
Season 4, Episode 4
Show notes
On this episode of Cut Outs, I talk with Nate and Dan from DC's Celebration Summer about their 2024 EP, A Little Less Numb. I've seen the band live a few times, and knew the first time I heard them that I had to have them on the show. We talk about the EP, as well as their other output, and we talk a bit about a tour that has already happened. I left that part in because I am lazy...I mean, for continuity...I mean, you'll figure it out.

Red Dye No. 5
Season 4, Episode 3
Show notes
On this episode of Cut Outs, I talk with Lisah, Scott, and James of Red Dye No 5 about their entire catalog, pressed onto a 2016 12" compilation. This was an amazing conversation, and I appreciate the kids being so candid about their time as a band together. There are a lot of ups and downs on this one. Honestly, if your band isn't all about the ups and downs, you're probably doing it wrong.

This episode is a short little PSA about a festival that I am excited to be a part of! My friend Dave hit me up and asked if I would like to chat with some of the artists on the bill for the inaugural Telepathic Windows Fest, coming to DC Brau on June 20th, 2026. And so I did. Julie Trend / The Maryjanes
Season 4, Episode 2
Show notes
Ok...this one is a bit of a doozy.
On this episode of Cut Outs, I talk with Sue and James of Julie Trend about their 1994 EP, Someone I Know, as well as the demo cassette that precluded it. This was one of the first bands I thought of when I started this podcast and, three years later, the stalking finally paid off. We talk about all the usual stuff but, honestly, we are all over the place. I guess that's what I get for having old friends on the show to talk about our passion for music.

Steve actually contacted me to say he was a fan of the podcast (or was working on it), and I immediately invited them on the show. On this episode of Cut Outs, I have a great conversation with Rocco of New Speedway about the band's 2011 debut record, Feel It. We discuss the power-pop/shoegaze vibe of the record, albums as a singular piece of art, and how if you're not in it for yourself, whats the point in doing it.

Season 3, Episode 10
Show notes
On this episode of Cut Outs, I have a conversation with Blake and Eric of the band Green Slime, as we discuss their second album, 2019's Green Slime 2. This is my first time talking with a band who only put material out on Compact Disc, but I doubt it will be the last. Show notes
On this episode of Cut Outs, I dive deep into early-80's rock culture with Dean of the band Code Blue. We dig into the band's 1980 major label debut album, and go a little off script as we discuss the trials of the music scene at the time. This was a different kind of conversation, and I enjoyed talking with Dean about the first-hand views he shares about the music industry.

Waxing Poetic: Static Radio

On this episode of Cut Outs, Brendan, Brian, and I present you with another fantastic episode of Waxing Poetic. We discuss Static Radio's 12" EP, 2017's Resentiments.
