I examine Ukraine’s reported large-scale drone strike on the Yaroslavl oil refinery, one of Russia’s five largest refineries with roughly 15 million tons of annual processing capacity. The site had reportedly been damaged in September and August, while aftermath footage from Samara showed another refinery fire still burning. I assess what repeated multi-point attacks, Russian claims of hundreds of intercepted drones, and power restrictions in occupied Sevastopol could mean for Russian refining capacity and air-defense allocation.

I also examine Russia’s mass strike on Ukraine’s energy system: reported damage to three thermal power plants, a Kharkiv clinical hospital where 73 people were reportedly injured, a Dnipro hospice, and a school used for aid distribution and shelter in Zaporizhzhia struck by nine aerial bombs. I examine how the November 3, 2026 midterm elections could alter President Trump’s room to maneuver on Ukraine and Iran. A Democratic House could not run foreign policy from the Capitol, but it could end a Republican rubber stamp, intensify scrutiny, shape legislation, and force Trump to negotiate if he wants to advance his domestic agenda. I examine a reported U.S. proposal to restart Russian natural-gas sales to Europe through Ukrainian pipelines, with an American intermediary and funds held in escrow. The reported incentive was for Moscow to halt strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid—but I argue that tying commercial relief to a pause in attacks could reward coercion without changing the Kremlin’s wider war aims. Kyiv faces a difficult winter after strikes on CHP-5, CHP-6, and Darnytsia CHP increased reliance on power from other regions.

I also assess Volodymyr Zelensky’s offer to pause Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries if Moscow stops attacking energy infrastructure, or if Washington supplies Patriot missiles for one month. I examine the reported U.S.-brokered evacuation from Russian-occupied Oleshky after a localized ceasefire held for more than 75 hours—the longest ceasefire of the war described in this episode. Residents who chose Ukrainian-controlled territory reportedly traveled from Oleshky to Anapa, flew on Russian Il-76 aircraft to Gomel, Belarus, and then crossed by bus into Ukraine. Kyiv said roads were cleared of mines and humanitarian aid was delivered; Zelenskyy thanked the American side and First Lady Melania Trump for mediation.

I also assess the strategic and moral limits of the operation. At least 527 Ukrainians were reported to be evacuating, while roughly 1,700–2,000 people remained in a city whose prewar population was 24,000 and where reliable power, water, and gas were absent. Russia controlled access, media coverage, and the images emerging from occupied Oleshky. I examine Ukraine’s overnight long-range drone campaign against Lukoil’s Sovo refinery in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, reportedly one of three Russian refineries struck in three days. With a nominal combined refining capacity of 32.9 million tons annually, these are not symbolic targets: Sovo produces gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel. I discuss why repeated hits on individual facilities could force Russia to make difficult choices about fuel security, air-defense coverage, and military logistics. I examine the mounting strains across Russia’s wartime economy, from construction-company liquidations and frozen accounts to rising oil-export freight and insurance costs. Tanker costs from Novorossiysk reportedly surged as Black Sea risk premiums climbed, while Urals export volumes fell. Russia is also seeking costly workarounds for grain exports: shipments through Murmansk require rail transport from southern Russia, adding an estimated $18–$25 per ton.

I also assess record farm debt, losses among coal producers, drone-related damage to major businesses, delayed Defense Ministry payments, and the pressure on consumer prices. Higher projected Urals revenue gives Moscow some breathing room, but it does not eliminate the accumulating costs of transport disruption, debt, insurance, and wartime spending. I examine the U.S.-approved possible $2.1 billion sale of 500 PAC-3 MSE Patriot interceptors to Ukraine, paid for by partners including Canada, Germany, and Norway. I examine the Alaska Senate controversy over Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., a retired teacher whose name closely matches Republican incumbent Dan S. Sullivan. The Alaska Supreme Court allowed the namesake candidate to remain on the ballot, and he won 2.5% in the primary—enough to matter if the general election is close. President Trump responded by demanding prosecution and discussing efforts to block certification if Democrat Mary Peltola wins.

I separate the political and legal questions. The New York Times reported that Peltola campaign operatives sought to locate and recruit Alaskans named Dan Sullivan, making this look like an intentional vote-splitting tactic. But voter confusion, even when ethically troubling, is not automatically a crime—and a shared name should not by itself erase someone’s right to run. I use a partisan-mirror test: would we accept this tactic if we did not know which party benefited?

I examine why pressure on Kyiv may be producing the opposite of its intended effect. Zelensky says Ukraine used Starshield defensively on its own territory, while the reported White House restriction on the system exposed Kyiv’s dependence on American technology and accelerated interest in European alternatives. Reuters-cited industry sources also said Russian crude processing rose roughly 25 percent in the second half of October after Ukraine halted refinery strikes at Washington’s insistence.

I also look at Zelensky’s case that Ukraine’s decentralized digital infrastructure has survived repeated attacks on data centers, while Russia’s more centralized command, political, and data systems create vulnerabilities under retaliation. The larger stakes are diplomatic: Putin can use repeated meetings and limited agreements to prolong the war while seeking incremental concessions. As Alexander Stubb argues, security pressure from Russia and political pressure from the United States are pushing Europe toward greater unity.

I examine the Financial Times report that Donald Trump Jr. stayed at a remote Mongolian hunting camp with Umar Kremlev, a businessman described as close to Vladimir Putin, while hunting Altai argali sheep. The report also places Russian businessman Artur Maturosov, a partner at the U.S.-sanctioned Voskhod fund, on the trip and says the group avoided joint photographs. Trump Jr. later reportedly met Mongolia’s president in what was described as an unofficial conversation.

I do not treat these facts as proof of corruption or a hidden deal. I do think they present a serious lesson in judgment, optics, and the special responsibility carried by a president’s family. I weigh the reported $140,000 charity-auction opportunity to join Trump Jr., Kremlev’s reported financing of a Bahamas wedding, and separate questions about Russian-linked money and Alaska LNG. OLESHKY HOLDS --- I examine the sharply contrasting developments of October 27: a U.S.-brokered humanitarian ceasefire around Russian-occupied Oleshki appeared to hold long enough to begin aid deliveries and prepare civilian evacuations, while Russia launched 16 ballistic missiles and more than 280 drones against Ukraine. With an estimated 1,700 to 6,000 civilians trapped in Oleshki amid hunger, the immediate question is whether the designated corridors can remain secure.

I also assess the reported strikes on Russia’s Energia defense plant, the 75th arsenal near Serpukhov, and an ammunition site in occupied Luhansk. In Kyiv, the barrage reportedly struck a university area, the Southern Bridge, and power-distribution infrastructure. The UN commission’s finding on systematic attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure raises the stakes beyond a single night’s damage. Meanwhile, reduced traffic on the R-280 land corridor to occupied Crimea shows how Ukraine’s long-range strike campaign may be imposing logistical pressure despite Russia’s far larger strike volume.

I examine the bipartisan congressional backlash to a possible Russian diesel-import arrangement, as seven lawmakers warn U.S. banks, fuel distributors, and port authorities that participation could invite legal scrutiny and help finance Moscow’s war.
