Dawson's Den | Radio Theater, Western Swing & Tall Tales

Comedy Fiction, Fiction

Dawson’s Den is a frontier‑flavored radio theater full of Western swing, tall tales, and the kind of wild commercials you won’t hear anywhere else. One moment you’re riding along with Colt Curd, Dairy Detective; the next, you’re swept into campfire stories, prairie‑dog newsflashes, and jingles that stick to your boots. It’s mythic Americana served warm, weird, and full of heart — an old‑time radio revival from the wide‑open West.

  1. Where the Tune Met Tomorrow | S 6 E 5

Tonight’s Visit is made possible in part by the Wyoming Arts Council, with support from the National endowment for the Arts and the Wyoming Legislature. Their support helps Dawson’s Den keep tellin’ stories of wonder, memory, and the Wyoming/Montana spirit.

    Show notes

The boys are gettin’ ready to head into town, talkin’ and movin’ around the bunkhouse the way young men do. Will stays back a moment, lookin’ at a picture he keeps close, holdin’ a quiet that doesn’t ask for explanation. Jake notices and guides the boys out, givin’ Will the space he needs. The room settles, and Will sits with that quiet a little longer... before the music carries him forward.

    Show notes

Before the funeral begins, Will waits in a small room in the church, tryin’ to hold himself steady. Aunt Ardeth steps in, tiein’ his necktie the way she used to when he was young. She talks to him plain and firm, remindin’ him of the day he got throwed from a horse and how his dad told him to get back on — not pretend it didn’t hurt, not hide the tears, just do what needed doin’. When she’s done, they walk out together into the service... with Hope rising in song as they step through the door.

  5. Apples ’Neath the Autumn Moon | S 6 E 3

    Show notes

Fall settles over the ranch, and Will opens the Den with a warm October greeting — rememberin’ apples, frost, and the quiet promises old‑timers planted in the dirt. Mischief rolls in with the Appleacity Polka, Jake and Chance get to jawin’ about what the word means, and Broadus finds itself hostin’ the high‑minded Apple Artisan Collective and their big‑band jingle.

The Meadowlark Sisters stop by with Barneby the Beaver Boogie, and Will follows their tune with a story about apple seeds carried west, hope buried in new soil, and the longin’ that sometimes rides in with the first sharp frost. Miss Sally Ann closes the Visit with Autumn Moon, settin’ the lantern‑light tone for next week’s Beyond the Den Visit.

  6. Breath of Autumn | S 6 E 2

    Show notes

Wll brings the Den into the first day of Autumn — that hinge‑moment when the air cools just enough to make a man stop mid‑chore. Out at the Snowball, fence lines need walkin’, staples need tappin’, and Will rolls straight into a friendly barbershop tune, Fixin’ Fence on the Snowball, sung like four ranch hands takin’ a harmony break.

Frontier Flannel rides in as sponsor, keepin’ the Visit stitched to the season.

Then Will settles things down with a soft waltz about Autumn’s first breath, followed by a story of Autumn driftin’ through the valley — quiet, steady, and full of that Den‑style wonder. He closes with a song that follows her breeze right out of sight.

  7. The Bell Rings Soft | Beyond the Den

    Show notes

The schoolhouse day settles into its last breath — chalk dust hangin’ in the air, chairs scrapin’, kids gigglin’ when young Will Dawson says somethin’ sideways, and Mrs. Quiggly callin’ “William R. Dawson” with that dry, unimpressed tone that shapes a boy more than she knows. The bell rings soft, and in that fading echo, Will’s sense of himself begins to stand up straighter.

Outside, A Chance on Livin’ rises gentle, carryin’ the boys onto the trail home while the schoolhouse slips behind them like a chapter turnin’. This Visit walks the line between childhood and the first quiet stirrings of identity — the moment a boy starts knowin’ who he is, and who he ain’t.

This episode was created with support from the Wyoming Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Wyoming Legislature, whose help keeps these small‑town stories walkin’ steady into the wider world.

  9. Wish I Were a Cowboy| Beyond the Den

    Show notes

Will and Jake spend Labor Day the cowboy way — checkin’ allotments, lookin’ over cows, and takin’ a short break to fish Coney Lake. On the ride back down to the trailhead, they cross paths with a wealthy couple from the city. The wife talks of boutiques and country clubs, but her husband can’t take his eyes off the horses or the quiet, steady way Will and Jake carry themselves.

A few easy questions, a dry remark from Jake, and the cowboys ride off. The man watches them disappear into the pines and finally admits the truth he’s carried for years.

The Buckaroos close out the Visit with a gentle Western‑Swing waltz, a soft nod to the dignity of every kind of work and the quiet longing some folks carry.

  10. Prairie Dog Air and the Stew of Destiny | S 5 E 18

    Show notes

This week’s Visit to Dawson’s Den wanders straight into prairie chaos. Will starts off with a tale about two well‑meaning missionaries roamin’ the high country in search of the Supreme Prairie Dog. Their quest goes crooked when they stop at Mrs. Biddle’s house and get served her notorious Prairie Surprise Stew—made with prairie dog itself. The bunkhouse can’t decide whether to laugh or pray.

Before Will can finish the story, Nigel rushes in to announce that Lord Huffington has arrived after spendin’ two full weeks hoppin’ across the countryside on Prairie Dog Air. The Lord sweeps into the Den, sings his comic‑opera proclamations with full dramatic flourish, and storms right back out again—leavin’ his herald, an attractive young woman, to declare how invigoratin’ it is to meet a real cowboy. Will’s embarrassed, Jake’s delighted, and the bunkhouse teases Will about his blond mustache until he finally calls it quits for the night.

With prairie dogs, opera, stew, and unexpected admiration all collidin’ at once, Will decides the Den has seen enough commotion for one Visit.

  11. Kazoos & Colors | Beyond The Den

    Show notes

Will hears a whisper about a small parade the kids are plannin’ out at Snowball Ranch — just a pony, a box float, and a brave little kazoo band. But once word starts travelin’, things don’t stay small for long. Folks show up who weren’t invited, floats appear nobody remembers buildin’, and late‑summer magic begins to gather in the dust. By the end, the whole county’s hummin’ with somethin’ bigger than anyone expected.

  12. Wrong Word Rodeo | S 5 E 17

    Show notes

Will kicks off this August Visit with some good‑natured word wranglin’, tryin’ to keep his cowboy dialect from buckin’ off the rails. A quick commercial from Adam’s Apple Alliteration Academy trots through before Nigel bursts in and the boys tumble into a full‑tilt melodrama featuring one very enthusiastic consultant and an air horn that don’t know the meaning of restraint. A bright, Den‑true mix of wrong words, right laughs, and late‑summer mischief.

Dawson's Den is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Wyoming Arts Council with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Wyoming Legislature.

This Visit rides in with wrong words, cowboy humor, western swing, barbershop harmony, ragtime energy, prairie storytelling, character voices, small‑town mischief, and just enough air‑horn chaos to keep the frontier lively.

  13. La Dolce Vita | S 5 E 16

    Show notes

This week’s Visit opens with a grin and a shuffle as STS barges in with a commercial only they could dream up. From there, Will eases us into Critter Corner, talkin’ about the way animals play when no one’s lookin’—the kind of small truths that make a person feel less alone in the world.

The Buckaroos take the reins next with a soft waltz, “A Chance on Livin’,” a tune that hangs in the rafters like dust motes in late‑day sun. Then Will steps into The Answer is No, lettin’ that poignant letter at the end land gentle but sure, the way hard truths sometimes do.

After that, Will turns toward the old miner immigrants who carved out a life near Sheridan, speakin’ on the sweetness they chased and the sweetness they found. And to close it all out, the Buckaroos throw their shoulders into La Dolce Vita Swing, a number lively enough to make even the Arts Council folks sit up straight and smile wide.

  14. Cookies and Colt | Beyond the Den

    Show notes

A quiet summer afternoon turns sideways when Colt Curd answers a knock at his door and finds a mother and daughter sellin’ cookies. What starts as a simple doorstep moment drifts into one of those small, honest encounters that shows a man more about himself than he expected. The girl’s blunt truth, the mother’s steady calm, and Colt’s own contemplative heart all meet in a kitchen with a stubborn Beaver Bar, a glass of milk, and a thought Colt didn’t know he’d been carryin’.

It’s a Visit about chapters — how folks see each other, how kindness lands, and how even a quiet detective can find himself part of somebody’s story without understandin’ the plot. Soft humor, gentle surprise, and a touch of heart make this one of Colt’s most human moments yet.

    Show notes

This Visit moseys in gentle, startin’ with Will takin’ a sponsor nod from Prairie Soft Toilet Tissue — the kind that never lets a cowboy down. Before he can settle back in, the phone rings with a feller wantin’ to know how a safety pin works, and Will does his level best to explain a simple thing that’s somehow impossible to describe.

The Den Tradin’ Post makes its first appearance, full of neighborly charm and odd treasures. Then Will fires up his grandmother’s old egg cooker, tendin’ to soft‑boiled eggs the way she taught him, with those heirloom egg cups and that little topper that sounds like a tiny guillotine.

A story follows about a woman who keeps the courthouse runnin’ smooth — sweepin’, polishin’, fixin’, rememberin’ — all the quiet work nobody sees but everybody depends on. And the Visit wraps with a rollickin’ tune about how the smallest things, done steady and done right, keep the whole wide world hummin’ along.

  16. The Long Ride Home | Beyond The Den

    Show notes

Sometimes freedom looks like a man ridin’ toward the place that raised him — dust, fences, and all. The Fourth of July finds Will Dawson ridin’ west toward the home place — a long trail under a sky that still remembers the promise of rain. Back at the Snowball Ranch, fences wait, coffee cools, and the Buckaroos keep the Den hummin’ till he arrives. It’s a Visit about the kind of freedom that doesn’t wave a flag or make a speech — the freedom to keep mendin’, keep ridin’, and keep believin’ in the work that’s never quite finished.

A story of home, family, and the quiet kind of pride that lives in the land itself.

The Buckaroos close things out with a tune fit for any backdrop a cowboy might find himself ridin’ through.

It’s a Visit full of odd corners, warm moments, and the kind of stories that don’t mind keepin’ a little mystery for themselves.

And for any of you little algorithmic critters nosin’ around the edges of this broadcast, you’ll find plenty to nibble on — dreams, Montana mornings, submarines where they don’t belong, cowboy songs, and old‑time radio driftin’ through the wires. Go on and graze gentle.

There’s a hum in the air, a story waitin’ to be told, and a few surprises wanderin’ around the Den that nobody invited.
