Supernatural: Pilot (1x01) | Recap & Lore
Episode 1
Show notes
Supernatural: Season 1, Episode 1, Pilot recap 👻 Welcome to the very first episode of Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Hosts Berly (a new SPN fan) and LA (along for the ride) pour a drink and kick off the Winchester saga with the 2005 pilot, and they're already swooning over Sam and Dean.
It's 1983 in Lawrence, Kansas, where four-year-old Dean is absolutely not qualified to carry baby Sam like a football down the stairs while the house burns and Mary Winchester gets pinned to the ceiling. Flash forward 22 years: the boys are all grown up (and gorgeous, according to your hosts), and Dean (Jensen Ackles) breaks into Sam's (Jared Padalecki) Stanford apartment to drag him on a road trip to find their missing dad, John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
Episode Highlights:
• The first blood splooge of the series! (Yes, we're keeping an official count)
• John giving 9-year-old Sam a .45 for closet monsters (very Texas of them, which tracks, since Jared and Jensen are both Texas boys)
• Two baby-faced "US Marshals" that nobody bothers to question
• Mulder and Scully, or as we call them, "Scolder and Moldy"
• Constance Welch (Sarah Shahi), the Woman in White, being very forward in that front seat
• Poor Jessica (Adrianne Palicki) meeting the same ceiling-pinned fate as MaryIn the lore segment, we dig into the legends behind the Woman in White, from La Llorona (the Weeping Woman) of Mexican folklore to Vanishing Hitchhiker tales like North Carolina's Lydia's Bridge and Dallas's own Lady of White Rock Lake.
The verdict: a rock-solid pilot that sets up everything. And Jeffrey Dean Morgan falling asleep on the couch? Absolutely forgivable, because, well, it's Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
"Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole." – Dean Winchester
Your turn, hunters: Pilot perfection or slow burn? What's your blood splooge prediction for Season 1? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail below. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed. We've got a lot of episodes ahead of us, and we need backup.

Supernatural: Wendigo (1x02) | Recap & Lore
Episode 2
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 2, Wendigo recap 🔥 Berly and LA are back on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, the Supernatural rewatch podcast, and they cannot stop saying "Wendingo" instead of "Wendigo" (there's only ONE "n," people!).
The episode opens at Blackwater Ridge, Colorado, where three camping bros learn the hard way that see-through tents offer zero protection. One guy gets attacked first (RIP, early-2000s horror tropes), a pre-Glee Cory Monteith gets snatched right out of the tent, and the third guy films it all on a Blackberry held backwards, because front-facing cameras weren't a thing yet. Remember those days?
Meanwhile, Sam's having nightmares about Jessica doing a Carrie-style grave grab, and the brothers follow the coordinates Dad left in his journal. They meet Haley Collins (Gina Holden, serving looks in tiny shorts that are NOT woods-appropriate), her little brother Ben (a baby-faced Alden Ehrenreich, aka the future Han Solo!), and their guide Roy, who is about to learn why you STAY IN THE PROTECTIVE CIRCLE.
Episode Highlights:
• Dean and Sam posing as "Ranger Ford" and "Ranger Hamill" while talking to the future Han Solo (Star Wars Easter egg overload!)
• Dean's "I don't do shorts" fashion stance
• Peanut M&M's leaving a Hansel and Gretel trail
• Roy being "secretly sassy" before becoming Wendigo snacks
• Zero blood splooges this week (just evidence of previous splooge)
• Dean gets a kiss, Sam gets a shoulder pat (ouch)In the lore segment, we dig into the Wendigo of Algonquian folklore, the controversial "Wendigo psychosis," the Cree healer Jack Fiddler, and the Donner Party, plus some unwanted Dahmer talk.
The verdict: the Wendigo goes down in flames (flare gun for the win), the Collins siblings survive, and everyone agrees to tell the authorities it was a bear. Dean declares he hates camping (relatable), and Sam gets to drive for once.
"Saving people, hunting things. The family business." – Dean Winchester
Your turn, hunters: Team "Wendigo" or Team "Wendingo"? Would you have stayed in the circle, or are you a Roy? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail below. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.

Supernatural: Dead in the Water (1x03) | Recap & Lore
Episode 3
Show notes
Supernatural: Season 1, Episode 3, Dead in the Water recap 🌊 Berly and LA are back on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast, and this week's cold open is a full-on Jaws homage (1975, not the '80s, thank you very much!). A girl gets pulled under Lake Manitoc, Wisconsin (fictional lake, though Manitowoc IS a real town, and yes, we mixed them up too), and the Winchester boys are on the case.
Sam and Dean roll into town posing as federal wildlife officers, armed with newspaper clippings, actual paper maps, and a complete inability to dress like any kind of officer. They meet Sheriff Jake Devins, his daughter Andrea (Amy Acker of Angel and Person of Interest), and her son Lucas, who hasn't spoken since watching his dad drown.
Dean bonds with Lucas over stick figure drawings (his artistic skills are... lacking), and the kid hands him a suspiciously good drawing of a house. When people start getting pulled under by black water in their own sinks and bathtubs, the boys realize they're dealing with the vengeful spirit of Peter Sweeney, a bullied kid who vanished 35 years ago.
Episode Highlights:
• Kicking things off with "Dead in the Water" sung to Smoke on the Water
• LA asking "When are they gonna take their shirts off?" (patience, girl!)
• A brief Marky Mark moment with Sam's tum-tum (blink and you'll miss it)
• Dean's tragic stick figure family portrait
• "Come play with me" giving major Shining vibes
• The creepy decayed arm grabbing Lucas
• Dean's parting wisdom to Lucas: "Zeppelin rules!"In the lore segment, we dig into vengeful ghost folklore, the chilling Hawaiian legend of Tanaka the drowned ghost, and why What Lies Beneath (Michelle Pfeiffer, Harrison Ford) is still one of the great drowned-ghost movies.
The verdict: our favorite episode so far! The boys save the day (again), Dean gets another goodbye kiss (Sam gets nothing, again), and Lucas is miraculously trauma-free and talking. Victory!
"It must be hard with your sense of direction, never being able to find your way to a decent pickup line." – Andrea Barr
Your turn, hunters: Is this the best episode so far, or are you still Team Wendigo? And did Dean deserve that roast? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail below. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.

Supernatural: Phantom Traveler (1x04) | Recap & Lore
Episode 4
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 4, Phantom Traveler recap ✈️ Berly and LA take to the skies on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast, and things get turbulent fast.
The episode opens with what the hosts were SURE was a guy snorting lines in an airport bathroom (it wasn't). He's just a nervous flyer about to get possessed by black mold (er, demon smoke) pouring out of a bathroom vent. Say hello to the show's very first demon! He boards the plane with creepy black eyes that only the flight attendant notices, then casually opens the emergency exit mid-flight, and down goes the plane.
Enter the Winchester boys, who get a call from Jerry, their dad's old friend from a "poltergeist thing." But first, a slow pan up Dean's body as he sleeps ass-up in bed. We rewound it. Twice. Dean also keeps a comically large knife under his pillow because he's "never scared" (narrator: he was scared).
Episode Highlights:
• LA admitting she was an asshole to her terrified friend on a plane in high school (unlike supportive Sam)
• Dean's DIY Homeland Security badges from a copy shop (where does he get all these badges?!)
• The boys in SUITS looking like adorable baby Men in Black
• Dean's awkward "Christo!" moment with the flight attendant
• The big reveal: Dean is TERRIFIED of flying
• Sam, the ultimate supportive baby brother
• Dad's voicemail telling people to call Dean in emergencies (but NOT calling Dean himself, the audacity!)
• LA's Constantine love (sequel, please!) and a Peter Stormare appreciation breakIn the lore segment, we look at real-life aviation mysteries: the four-year investigation into TWA Flight 800, the deliberate crash of EgyptAir Flight 990, and the unbelievable survival story of British Airways Flight 5390. Our verdict: if disaster demons were real, this is exactly the kind of chaos they'd cause.
Sam: "Are you humming Metallica?"
Dean: "It calms me down."Your turn, hunters: Nervous flyer or hum-Metallica-and-pray flyer? And what's your theory on where Dean gets all these badges? Supernatural: Bloody Mary (1x05) | Recap & Lore
Episode 5
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 5, Bloody Mary recap 🪞 Berly and LA are back on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast, and LA's very first note on this one? I don't mess with that shit! Bloody Mary sleepover legends traumatized her as a kid (relatable).
The episode starts in Toledo, Ohio, where three girls play truth or dare and young Lily gets dared to say Bloody Mary three times in the mirror. Her dad, Steven Shoemaker, starts seeing a creepy figure in every reflective surface of their VERY mirror-heavy house (seriously, way too many mirrors) and ends up dead in the bathroom with his eyes liquefied into blood. Yikes.
Meanwhile, Sam's having nightmares about Jessica burning on the ceiling and refuses to talk about it (tortured soul Sam is back!). The boys trace the ghost to Mary Worthington, a woman murdered in front of her mirror in Indiana, and discover she isn't coming after just anyone. She's targeting people with a secret: they caused someone's death. Along the way they meet bitchy-but-smart Charlie, who wisely gets Sam's number (smart move, girl!), and her friend Jill, who does Bloody Mary to prove it's not real and... immediately dies.
Episode Highlights:
• LA's cousin scaring the absolute shit out of her with a "behind you!" prank
• The boys crashing a wake in their grungy hunting clothes (maybe wait till after, guys?)
• Sam's reflective shirt buttons needing to go (for safety!)
• Dean bribing the sassy morgue attendant with Sam's poker winnings
• Mary crawling out of the mirror, straight up The Ring style
• Sam revealing he dreamed about Jessica's death BEFORE it happened (guilt intensifies)
• Dean the knight in shining armor, smashing mirrors (that's a LOT of bad luck, boys!)
• Mary getting a very Dorian Gray taste of her own reflectionIn the lore segment, we dig into the real Bloody Mary: Queen Mary I of England, aka Mary Tudor, who earned her nickname by burning hundreds of Protestants at the stake. We also get into how Foxe's Book of Martyrs sealed her reputation and whether she inspired the Bloody Mary cocktail. Brutal history, but probably not the source of the sleepover game.
Sam: "Lollipops and candy canes."
(Dean had asked what he dreamed about. And yes, we toasted "Your brain is full of lollipops, rainbows and cheese" from Get Him to the Greek instead.)Your turn, hunters: Did YOU ever say Bloody Mary three times in the mirror, or are you with LA and don't mess with that shit? Supernatural: Skin (1x06) | Recap & Lore
Episode 6
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 6, Skin recap 👕 It's a shapeshifter episode on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast, and LA opens with a begrudging admission: she's somewhat enjoying the show (progress!). And with an episode title like Skin, Berly had high expectations that did NOT go the way she hoped.
The episode opens with a crime scene shocker: Dean has a bloody woman tied up, and the SWAT team busts in. But wait, it's one-week-earlier time! Sam gets an email from his college friend Becky about her brother Zach being arrested for murder, even though he was with her all night. Dean's skeptical (this isn't their gig), but they head to St. Louis anyway, peeling out past a Drive Safe America sign (Berly died laughing).
Things get weird when the boys realize a shapeshifter is stealing people's identities and their clothes. They find disgusting, jellified skin sheds in the sewers (NOT the skin shots Berly wanted), and a victim we nicknamed Cheekbones has a doppelganger problem. Then the shapeshifter becomes Dean, and evil Dean ties up Sam, giving us what the hosts declare a VERY attractive tied-up Sam moment.
Episode Highlights:
• Berly's disappointment that skin meant gross jelly sheds, not shirtless Winchester boys
• Calling the victim Cheekbones for the entire episode
• The ONE shirtless Dean scene, immediately ruined by shapeshifting gore (teeth falling out, fingernails popping off)
• Sam looking *real hot* tied up with rope (the hosts have no shame)
• Dean promoting himself from cop to detective mid-investigation
• Evil Dean downloading Dean's memories, Star Trek Vulcan mind meld styleIn the lore segment, we dig into shapeshifter legends from Greek mythology (Zeus was a swan, a bull, AND an ant) to Egyptian gods, shamans, centaurs, and one of the oldest shapeshifter images ever found, the Sorcerer painting in the Cave of the Trois-Frères. Plus, we learn that Loki once turned into a mare and gave birth to Sleipnir, an eight-legged horse. As one does.
"I want to find that handsome devil and kick the holy crap out of him." – Dean Winchester, on his evil twin
Your turn, hunters: Was Skin a letdown or a gross-out classic? And who wore it better, Dean or evil Dean? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.

Supernatural: Hook Man (1x07) | Recap & Lore
Episode 7
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 7, Hook Man recap 🪝 Berly and LA tackle the classic Lover's Lane urban legend on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast, and things get... awkward. Like, really awkward.
The episode takes us to Eastern Iowa University, where Lori and her boyfriend Rich head to Nine Mile Road for some late-night romance. Rich wants to get frisky, Lori shuts him down (consent is key, Rich!), and then a dramatic, pirate-looking ghost with a hook hand ruins everyone's night, leaving Rich hanging, literally, over the truck while his fingers scrape the roof.
Sam and Dean roll in posing as frat boys, and Dean immediately volunteers his bro to help paint a guy purple for game day while Sam clutches his jaw in annoyance. They discover they're dealing with the ghost of Preacher Jacob Karns, who murdered 13 sex workers with his silver hook hand in 1862 because he was mad about the red light district. As one does.
Episode Highlights:
• Berly's long-lost doppelganger, an exotic dancer (naturally), and a trip down strip club memory lane
• The mysterious banana one frat guy just... holds while working on a car (why?!)
• Lori turning around at church, spotting Sam and Dean, and immediately forgetting her dead boyfriend
• The classic "Aren't you glad you didn't turn on the lights?" urban legend playing out
• Reverend Sorensen, played by Dan Butler (Bulldog from Frasier), being a total horn dog with a married woman
• Rich's two-finger "seductive" collarbone stroke (what even was that?)
• The synchronized toss: Sam throws the necklace, Dean throws the shotgun
• Sam FINALLY getting a kiss (it only took seven episodes)
• Sam's bandage bleeding through while the paramedics just... let him leaveThe verdict: this one ranks toward the bottom of the season so far, but the classic urban legend vibes are strong.
In the lore segment, we trace the Hook Man legend from Lover's Lane morality tales to Urban Legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Candyman, and even Bill Murray's Meatballs. Then we dig into the likely real-life inspiration: the 1946 Texarkana Phantom Killer murders, which inspired The Town That Dreaded Sundown and remain the number one unsolved murder case in Texas history. Plus, we theorize about why serial killers suddenly stop (you had to be there).
"Remind me not to piss this girl off." – Dean Winchester, about Lori
Your turn, hunters: Where does Hook Man rank for you? And what urban legend scared YOU off Lover's Lane? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.

Supernatural: Bugs (1x08) | Recap & Lore
Episode 8
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 8, Bugs recap 🪳 Berly and LA face their creepiest-crawliest episode yet on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast, and LA's review before we even started? Not happy, not thrilled, not excited. It's not the writing. It's the BUGS.
The episode opens in Oklahoma, where poor Dustin falls into a perfectly person-sized sinkhole (supernatural sinkhole, obviously) and gets swarmed by beetles that crawl into his nose, ears, and everywhere else (horrifying). The official cause of death? Mad cow disease, which the boys immediately call BS on. Dean knows all about it because he learned it from Oprah. Dean watches Oprah. Confirmed.
Sam and Dean investigate the new housing development and meet the Pike family, the first residents, who welcome everyone regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation. Cue Sam: We're brothers. Larry Pike's bug-obsessed teenage son Matt becomes their prime suspect, and there's a free barbecue, so naturally Dean crashes it like the professional he is.
Episode Highlights:
• Dean smacking Sam's ass and calling him honey when the realtor gives the all-orientations spiel
• Dean in a towel turban despite having no hair to dry (LA found it adorable)
• Sam and Dean squatting in an empty model home to use the steam shower
• The tarantula prank Sam casually thwarts by nudging the realtor aside (she just... walks off)
• Dean turning bug spray and a lighter into a flamethrower (so unnecessary)
• Matt asking if Sam and Dean are serial killers, then being totally fine with their no
• Major character development: Sam letting go of his anger at Dad and wanting to apologizeIn the lore segment, we unpack the Indian burial ground trope, from The Amityville Horror to Parks and Recreation, and why it's a tired and pretty racist horror cliché. Then LA bravely researches the world's most terrifying bugs, including the giant silkworm moth caterpillar whose venom can cause hemorrhaging, the Sydney funnel-web spider with fangs that can pierce a fingernail, the tarantula hawk wasp, and bullet ants, which have the most painful sting in the world (and cameo in Ant-Man!).
Squeamish about bugs? LA covered her face for half the episode, so we get it. If you skip this one, just know that Sam finally softens on Dad.
Dean: "Kind of hungry for a little barbecue. How about you?"
Sam: "The free food's got nothing to do with it."
Dean: "Of course not. I'm a professional."Your turn, hunters: Could you make it through this episode, or were you hiding behind a pillow with LA? And what's the scariest bug YOU'VE ever met? Supernatural: Home (1x09) | Recap & Lore
Episode 9
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 9, Home recap 🏡 The Winchesters go back to where it all began in Lawrence, Kansas, and Berly and LA meet Missouri Mosley, Mary Winchester's spirit, and one very haunted house on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. And good news: LA survived last week without bug nightmares. Progress!
Sam has a premonition dream about their childhood home and finally confesses his psychic visions to Dean. Dean is NOT happy about going home, so he calls Dad's voicemail for emotional support while pretending he needs the bathroom. The boys meet Jenny, the new homeowner dealing with mysterious scratches, flickering lights, and a dishwasher that suddenly quit, while her daughter Sari is convinced something lives in her massive walk-in closet (seriously, that closet is bigger than most bedrooms).
Enter psychic Missouri Mosley, played by the incredible Loretta Devine, the woman who first opened John Winchester's eyes to the supernatural. She reads Dean like a book, warns him off her furniture before he even thinks about it, and we are OBSESSED. Bring her back!
Episode Highlights:
• Another almost-shirtless Dean scene (so close, yet so far)
• Sam casually admitting they're the Winchesters instead of lying (character growth!)
• Richie the juice junkie in his baby jail
• The poor plumber losing his hand to the garbage disposal, the goriest scene of the episode (a COLUMN of blood)
• Missouri smacking Dean upside the head and Sam LOVING it
• Dean with an axe (Shining vibes, anyone?)
• Sam getting strangled by a lamp cord while doing that hot tension thing Jared does so well
• The big reveal: MAMA WINCHESTER is the flaming spirit protecting her boys
• Mary telling Sam "I'm sorry" (wait, what did YOU do, Mary?!)
• Jeffrey Dean Morgan FINALLY appearing on Missouri's couch in the final sceneIn the lore segment, we dig into poltergeists, from the famous Enfield poltergeist in London to the (probably fake) Rosenheim case in Germany, plus the theory that the activity comes from a stressed-out living person (recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis, if you want to sound smart at parties). Then Berly confesses she had a poltergeist in her college condo, and her theory is that she was such a bad roommate she stressed her roommate into creating it. When the roommate moved out, the activity stopped. Mystery solved?
"Boy, you put your foot on my coffee table, I'm gonna whack you with a spoon." – Missouri Mosley
Your turn, hunters: Should Missouri have been a recurring character? And did YOU ever live with a poltergeist, or a roommate who might've caused one? Supernatural: Asylum (1x10) | Recap & Lore
Episode 10
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 10, Asylum recap 🩻 The boys check into a haunted asylum, and Berly and LA check out some indie-horror-film-quality scares on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Berly kicks things off with home again, home again, jiggety jig (apparently it's a nursery rhyme, who knew?), and this one brings some serious TENSION between the brothers.
Dad's still ghosting them (typical) but sends mysterious coordinates that lead to the abandoned Roosevelt Asylum in Rockford, Illinois. Officer Gunderson fills them in on the place's reputation for driving people insane. His partner, Officer Kelly, wandered into a room with a biohazard symbol (smart choice, buddy), got ghost-zapped, and did something truly horrible. Not okay, Kelly. Not okay.
Sam and Dean investigate and meet stoner couple Kat and Gavin, who came to see ghosts for fun. Gavin gets kissed by a ghost with a messed-up face (bottle-smash vibes around the eye), and we agree it was TERRIFYING. But these ghosts might be trying to help, and they lead the boys to room 137 and the dark secrets of Dr. Sanford Ellicott, who ran electroshock experiments on his patients.
Episode Highlights:
• Berly guessing someone ate the bodies (wrong, but an A for creativity)
• The COOL shot of Kat getting whipped into a room at lightning speed (indie movie quality!)
• Another almost-shirtless Dean scene with a good arm and clavicle (the clickbait continues)
• Sam getting ghost-electroshocked and trying to MURDER DEAN
• LA saying Sam's rock salt line at the exact same time as Sam
• The Winchesters packing THREE shotguns between them (prepared AF)
• Kat going from "I won't leave without him" to "we're done" by the end
• DADDY FINALLY CALLS (cut to black!)In the lore segment, we dig into DEEPLY disturbing real psychological experiments, from Sigmund Freud's treatment of Emma Eckstein (hello, A Dangerous Method) to the Monster Study, the Stanford Prison Experiment, the Little Albert experiment, and the CIA's Operation Midnight Climax (LA approves of the name). Turns out Dr. Ellicott wasn't the only unethical doctor in history. Plus, LA explains why getting shot with rock salt, Kill Bill style, is basically literal salt in the wound.
Dean: "What are you gonna do, Sam? Gun's filled with rock salt. It's not gonna kill me."
Sam: "No, but it'll hurt like hell."Your turn, hunters: Would you spend a night in the Roosevelt Asylum? And did Kat make the right call? Supernatural: Scarecrow (1x11) | Recap & Lore
Episode 11
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 11, Scarecrow recap 🍎 Meg makes her very first appearance, a creepy AF scarecrow terrorizes a too-perfect small town, and Sam and Dean split up for the first time on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Plus, FINALLY, some quality shirtless Winchester action (sort of): Berly opens by celebrating the nip slip while LA was all about those arms and shoulders.
Picking up right after Asylum, Dad actually CALLS, and we're blessed with John's magnificent eyelashes, a perky Dean nipple, gorgeous biceps, and Sam working his jaw in anger. It's so much eye candy in one two-minute scene that we had to rewatch it multiple times. Dad reveals he's hunting a DEMON and sends the boys coordinates for a case, which kicks off a heated fight. Sam wants to find Dad in Sacramento, Dean wants to follow orders, and the brothers SPLIT UP.
Dean heads to Burkittsville, Indiana (very Pleasantville vibes; fun fact, it shares a name with the Blair Witch town), where couples keep disappearing near an apple orchard guarded by a very creepy scarecrow. Meanwhile, Sam hitchhikes and meets Meg (Nicki Aycox), a rebellious blonde with fabulous boots and a pixie cut. They bond over daddy issues at a bus station over beer and Cheeto Puffs (as one does).
Episode Highlights:
• Dean using the alias John Bonham (Led Zeppelin's drummer) and getting called out by Scotty
• The scarecrow wearing the TATTOO from the first victim's skin (nightmare fuel)
• The sheriff being WAY too aggressive for no reason
• Meg choosing creepy van guy over Sam (we would never)
• Dean awkwardly warning the couple that they might be in danger, though?
• The townsfolk dramatically clicking on their flashlights one by one like they rehearsed it
• For the greater good: Hot Fuzz vibes intensify
• Spotting the X-Files' Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis) as the local professor, in a cameo so short he was gone before we finished Googling him
• MEG SLITTING A GUY'S THROAT and talking to Father through a BLOOD CAULDRON (WHAT?!)The boys make up (adorable apologies without actually apologizing), realize the scarecrow is a manifestation of a pagan god from the Norse Vanir, and burn the sacred tree. But the REAL plot twist? Meg is working for Father, and she let Sam go on purpose.
In the lore segment, we dig into Norse mythology and the Vanir gods of fertility and wealth, including Freya, who slept with four dwarves for the necklace Brísingamen, and her brother Freyr, whose magic ship folds up to fit in his pocket (super convenient). Plus, we discover we're both part Scandinavian and get very distracted by our ancestry.
"I hope your apple pie is freaking worth it!" – Dean Winchester, to the townsfolk
Your turn, hunters: What was your first impression of Meg, and did you see that ending coming? And be honest, would you have picked Sam or creepy van guy? Supernatural: Faith (1x12) | Recap & Lore
Episode 12
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 12, Faith recap 🙏 Dean gets a death sentence, a blind faith healer gets a Reaper problem, and Julie Benz breaks our hearts on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Plus, we're officially halfway through season one!
First, some fandom news from Berly's deep dive into SPN Twitter: there are SAM GIRLS and DEAN GIRLS who fight each other (we're Team Both), Wincest shippers exist (oh no), and our blood splooge count is a disappointing ONE. Berly also started listening to Supernatural Then and Now with Rob Benedict and Richard Speight Jr., until they made the same dingo ate my baby joke we did. LA was not pleased. THAT'S HER JOKE, DAMMIT.
The episode opens with Dean getting WRECKED by 100,000 volts while fighting a rawhead, a basement-dwelling, child-eating monster. Pro tip: standing in water + tasering a monster = massive heart attack. The doctor gives Dean a few weeks to live, and Dean just... accepts it? This man is terrified of planes and going home, but death? Totally chill. Sam is NOT having it and drags Dean to a faith healer in Nebraska.
Enter Roy LeGrange (great ZZ Top name) and his tent revival. Dean makes a snarky comment about wallets, the BLIND preacher hears him anyway, and he picks Dean to heal. Dean sees a creepy, prune-faced man in black behind Roy, passes out, and wakes up HEALED. But across town, a jogger drops dead of a heart attack at the exact same moment.
Episode Highlights:
• Sam being the CUTEST trying to help Dean walk, and Dean being like GET OFF ME
• Sick Dean with bags under his eyes? We'd still hit it
• Layla, played by Julie Benz of Angel and Dexter, and Team Layla all the way
• Sue Ann being hilariously bad at hiding evidence (she flips her necklace to SHOW the symbol, then hides it)
• The excessive dust in the office that looked like sawdust
• Sam's cheesiest proud face as he leaves so Dean can say goodbye to Layla
• The Reaper's eye effects (that milky film was COOL)
• Blue Öyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper, of courseIn the lore segment, we dig into Grim Reaper origins, from Thanatos, the Greek god of death (twin brother of Hypnos), to the Valkyries, the Norse choosers of the slain, to how the plague gave us the scary skeleton version we know today. And the scythe? A harvesting tool for souls!
"That fabric softener teddy bear. Oh, I'm gonna hunt that little bitch down." – Dean Winchester
Your turn, hunters: Team Sam, Team Dean, or Team Both like us? And did Layla deserve better? (Yes.) Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.

Supernatural: Route 666 (1x13) | Recap & Lore
Episode 13
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 13, Route 666 recap 🛻 Dean's ex-girlfriend calls for help, and this week's villain is... a racist truck. Yes, you read that right. A RACIST TRUCK. Berly and LA hit the road on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast, and LA opens with I take issue with this one. The acting was off, the chemistry was odd, and the sex scene did not meet our standards.
The episode starts in Cape Girardeau, Missouri (we cannot pronounce it), where a man gets chased down and murdered by an aggressive monster truck that acts almost animalistic. Meanwhile, Dean gets a call from his ex, Cassie (Megalyn Echikunwoke), who needs help, and Sam is LIVING for the tea. He wants ALL the details about Dean's romantic history and wears the biggest grin the whole episode.
Cassie is a reporter investigating why Black men keep dying on the same stretch of road, and her father was one of the victims. The mayor dismisses it all as accidents, despite the cars being SMASHED (Berly: You call that a dent?!). Dean and Cassie reunite, she barely acknowledges sweet Sam, and her mom shows up flustered and VERY dramatic with her teacup.
Episode Highlights (or Lowlights):
• Chemistry between Dean and Cassie (more sibling vibes than romance)
• The sex scene song (not what we would have picked)
• Berly demonstrating the awkward back petting by hugging herself like a kid pretending to make out
• Lighting so bad we couldn't even properly see topless Dean
• Cassie being real DTF, according to LA's notes
• Sam's adorable, mischievous grins, the true highlight of the episode
• The mayor's liquefied bones (his insides became a SMOOTHIE)
• The blue truck that is clearly BLACK the entire episode
• Sam's master plan: "What if that didn't work?" "I was hoping that wouldn't happen."
• Dean putting on his Terminator glassesIn the lore segment, we dig into the real history behind the horror: sundown towns, which we only learned about recently from Lovecraft Country and Watchmen (why didn't they teach this in school?!), and the Negro Motorist Green Book. Then we get into Stephen King's Christine, which some say was inspired by a real cursed car: the Golden Eagle, a 1964 Dodge 330. Legend has it that three police officers who drove it murdered their families, and that church members who vandalized it met gruesome ends. And the doors reportedly STILL fly open on the highway.
"I missed conversations that didn't start with 'this killer truck.'" – Sam Winchester
Your turn, hunters: Is Route 666 a guilty pleasure or a hard skip? And would YOU drive the Golden Eagle? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.

Supernatural: Nightmare (1x14) | Recap & Lore
Episode 14
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 14, Nightmare recap 🌚 Sam's visions get REAL, the boys meet a troubled teen with powers like Sam's, and we finally learn what Sam can do on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. (CW: this episode deals with child abuse.)
LA thought we were in for another ghost car double feature after Route 666, but nope. Sam wakes from a nightmare about a man dying in his garage in a very old Dodge, and he's convinced it's a premonition. The boys race to the house, too late, and they're off to investigate the Miller family. Enter the widow, Alice (Beth Broderick, aka Aunt Zelda from Sabrina the Teenage Witch), and her stepson Max (Brendan Fletcher, who is SO good in this), who is definitely not acting normal.
Episode Highlights:
• The Winchesters as the original hot priests (Fleabag who?)
• Sam's premonitions going from blurry to deadly
• Grumpy Uncle Roger, whose exit is basically a Darwin Award (sorry, Roger)
• The Ghostbusters-looking EMF meter with lasers (what do the green lasers DO?)
• Motel decor appreciation: shutters > mini blinds
• The boys comparing notes on dead moms, and the question of whether Sam and Max are connected
• Another bloody bandage that really didn't need that much fake blood
• SAM MOVED A DRESSER WITH HIS MIND. We repeat: SAM. MOVED. A DRESSER.In the lore segment, we dig into telekinesis and Nina Kulagina, the WWII Red Army tank soldier turned alleged psychic, who was studied by Soviet scientists in the 1960s. Want more? We cover Kulagina and MKUltra in our Stranger Things Inspired By episodes on our other podcast, The Tipsy Exchange.
"Our family's not cursed. We just have our dark spots." – Dean Winchester

Supernatural: The Benders (1x15) | Recap & Lore
Episode 15
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 15, The Benders recap 🦷 People are disappearing in Hibbing, Minnesota, Sam gets snatched, and Dean teams up with a local deputy to find him on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. This week's monsters might be the scariest ones yet.
A little boy sees something drag a man into a van outside his window, and the boys roll into town in state trooper uniforms (with the HATS). But when Sam goes missing from a bar parking lot, Dean has to team up with Deputy Kathleen (Jessica Steen), who has a missing brother of her own and is NOT thrilled to learn that Dean Winchester is supposed to be dead (thanks, shapeshifter). Meanwhile, Sam wakes up in a cage next to a very rude fellow captive, and the family holding them captive is creepy as hell.
Episode Highlights:
• The Winchesters in state trooper hats (a look we support)
• Dean's legal death catching up with him, a callback to Skin
• Sam's cage neighbor being a total dickhead
• That spear-through-the-thigh close-up (we clenched EVERYTHING)
• The creepy little Bender girl, who ate up every scene she was in
• A jar full of teeth. A JAR. FULL. OF. TEETH.
• Dean putting up a real fight against the big Bender boys
• Sam's agile little somersault to dodge a bullet
• Kathleen getting the last word (we would have done the same)In the lore segment, we dig into the history of human hunting, from Richard Connell's 1924 short story The Most Dangerous Game to the real-life horror of Robert Hansen, the Butcher Baker of Anchorage, a respected business owner and bow hunter who hunted his victims in the Alaskan wilderness. Fun fact we missed: the name likely comes from the Bloody Benders, a real family of serial killers who ran an inn in 1870s Kansas. Want more? The Serial Killer Podcast covered this true tale in 2018.
"Demons I get. People are crazy." – Dean Winchester

Supernatural: Shadow (1x16) | Recap & Lore
Episode 16
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 16, Shadow recap 👤 Meg is back, invisible demons called daevas are ripping out hearts in Chicago, and the Winchesters are on the verge of their biggest hunt yet on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
The episode opens with a trendy young woman in her early-2000s finest (skinny scarf, low-rise jeans, iPod) who gets home, resets her alarm, and is attacked by a giant shadow anyway. The boys roll in posing as security system repairmen (the landlady calls the alarm about as useless as tits on a man, and she's a delight) and discover a Zoroastrian symbol at the scene. Then who should Sam run into at the bar but Meg (Nicki Aycox), the cute blonde from Scarecrow, who is now dogging on Dean for how he treats Sam. Know your place, Meg.
Episode Highlights:
• The early-2000s fashion (we all had those skinny scarves)
• Sam and Dean poking at dried blood with their bare hands (why?!)
• Dean researching Meg Masters and finding her actual high school photo
• Sam dreaming about life after the demon, and Dean being personally offended at the idea of Sam going back to college
• The brothers' argument, which had more tension than anything Dean and Cassie managed in Route 666
• Tied-up Winchesters again (we should start counting)
• Meg's plan, which is NOT what it seems
• All three Winchesters on screen together, always a treatIn the lore segment, we dig into the daevas of Zoroastrianism, one of the world's oldest religions: how they went from gods to chaotic demons in the Younger Avesta, how they became the div of Persian and Islamic folklore, and how the word even landed in William Beckford's 18th-century novel Vathek. Plus, why they reminded us of the shadow demons in Ghost.
"Next time you want to get laid, find a girl that's not so buckets of crazy, huh?" – Dean Winchester

Supernatural: Hell House (1x17) | Recap & Lore
Episode 17
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 17, Hell House recap 🏚️ The boys come to Richardson, Texas (right down the road from us!), for a haunted house, a prank war, and the debut of the Ghostfacers' Ed and Harry on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Plus: Sam. In a towel. Fresh out of the shower. We'll get there.
The episode opens with high school kids daring each other to go inside a creepy abandoned house where a man named Mordecai supposedly murdered his daughters. The Winchesters find the story on a paranormal website, and their investigation leads them to Ed Zeddmore and Harry Spangler (Travis Wester and A.J. Buckley), the bumbling duo behind the Hellhounds Lair website, who are VERY much not qualified to be here. But when the legend keeps changing and Mordecai keeps getting stronger, the boys realize this ghost is something very different.
Episode Highlights:
• The PRANK WAR: Dean's spoon-in-mouth photo, itching powder, and Sam's super glue revenge
• A motel room so Texas it had the Alamo, longhorns, AND an armadillo
• A TCU shout-out!
• The WWE entrance music in the record store
• The boys' stunt-worthy full-body exit through the front door
• Ed and Harry getting arrested while Sam and Dean slip past the cops like pros
• SAM IN A TOWEL. Berly's arms went up like a touchdown, and they STAYED up. Best moment of the season so far.
• The final prank: dead fish on a road trip to LA (poor Ed and Harry... kind of)In the lore segment, we dig into tulpas, thought-forms of Tibetan Buddhism made real through intense concentration: explorer Alexandra David-Néel's claims about creating one, dream yoga, and how the tulpa concept took on a life of its own online (hello, tulpamancers). Plus, we get VERY confused about the word switching.

Supernatural: Something Wicked (1x18) | Recap & Lore
Episode 18
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 18, Something Wicked recap 🧙 Kids are falling mysteriously ill in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, and Dean knows exactly what's behind it, because he's faced it before, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Get ready for a flashback to young Dean on babysitting duty.
The episode opens with a dad tucking his daughter into bed (and calling her monkey puss, which, no), and before long, the local playground is empty because parents are too scared to let their kids out. Dean diagnoses it right away: it's a shtriga, a witch that feeds on the life force of children. Sam, who has searched every database he can think of (LexisNexis, anyone?), wants to know how Dean is so sure. Meanwhile, the boys befriend Michael, the smart-mouthed kid working the motel front desk and the funniest character in the episode.
Episode Highlights:
• Monkey puss. We're still not okay.
• The boys posing as CDC agents
• Michael, the best kind of kid to hang out with for a short time before sending him home
• Flashback to 10-year-old Dean, left in charge of Sammy with Dad's orders to look after him (also, Dean, why'd you dump the SpaghettiOs if you were hungry?)
• Dean's guilt coming out, and the reason he's been acting off all episode
• The nanny-cam stakeout, with the shtriga's creepy long fingers
• Sam's sweet moment about Michael losing his innocenceIn the lore segment, we dig into the shtriga of Albanian folklore and its cousins, the Polish strzyga and the Romanian strigoi, and the striga that shows up in The Witcher. Plus: how to protect yourself (salt on your eyes, mouth, and heart; a cross made of pig bone), the bizarre silver coin amulet, and our questions about how you consecrate iron bullets.
"A doctor is the perfect disguise. You're trusted. You can control the whole thing." – Sam Winchester

Supernatural: Provenance (1x19) | Recap & Lore
Episode 19
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 19, Provenance recap 🖼️ A haunted painting leaves a trail of bodies across upstate New York, and Dean plays wingman so Sam can finally get some lady love on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
It opens with one of the goriest cold opens so far: a couple buys an old family portrait from the 1800s, and things go VERY wrong. The boys track the painting to an auction house, where Sam meets Sarah (Taylor Cole), the owner's daughter and an antique specialist, and Dean practically shoves them onto a date. Sam's clearly out of his element at the fancy restaurant. It's adorable. But this painting keeps changing, and it's hiding a lot more than it seems.
Episode Highlights:
• That cold open. Holy shit. (Also: why can we see an old lady's throat slit that deep, but not more booty? CW, be better.)
• Dean pushing Sam to date again, and Sam finally giving in
• The disco-themed motel room
• The boys' dramatic fence jump, a callback to Asylum
• The creepy attacker's POV shots that kept us guessing
• Sarah not freaking out AT ALL about grave-robbing on a first date (kudos, Sarah)
• The mysterious doll
• Sam FINALLY getting a kiss, and Dean's proud "That's my boy."In the lore segment, we dig into real haunted paintings: The Crying Boy, blamed for countless house fires; the Portrait of Samantha Houston at the Driskill Hotel in Austin; Stagecraft (the "hanging man" painting); Edvard Munch's The Dead Mother (yes, the guy who painted The Scream); and The Hands Resist Him, the creepy painting that sold on eBay after viewers claimed just looking at the photos made them sick.

Supernatural: Dead Man's Blood (1x20) | Recap & Lore
Episode 20
Show notes
Supernatural Season 1, Episode 20, Dead Man's Blood recap 🧛 Daddy's back! Jeffrey Dean Morgan returns as John Winchester, the boys learn that VAMPIRES are real, and the legendary Colt enters the chat on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
The episode opens in Colorado, where an old hunter, Daniel Elkins, is scribbling in a journal at a bar (we thought it was John's journal at first). That night, Elkins is attacked in his home, and a very special gun goes missing. • Dean finally standing up to Dad
• Sam and John mending some fences, sort ofIn the lore segment, we dig into vampire history, from John Polidori's 1819 The Vampyre (inspired by Lord Byron) to Bram Stoker's Dracula and Bela Lugosi.
