Destination Terror

On a quiet road in County Roscommon, Ireland, a low hump of stone hides a crawl-space entrance into the dark. Locals call it the Cave of the Cats, and according to ancient tradition, it is where Samhain, and maybe Halloween itself, was born. This Halloween week on Destination Terror, we visit Oweynagat, the so-called Gate to Hell at Rathcroghan, the legendary seat of Queen Medb. In tonight's original story, a woman inherits a farm beside the cave and is given four rules for the last night of October.

Shut the gate. Leave a bowl of water on the sill. Stay out of the back field. And whatever you do, do not count the flock. Then we step out of the story to explore the real history behind the legends: the Morrígan's chariot, the pigs that multiplied when counted, birds with poisoned breath, and the tale of Nera, who followed an army into the Otherworld on Samhain night. Turn down the lights, and make sure your door is locked.

Deep in the East Tennessee mountains, Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary was built from the Coal Creek War and the end of convict leasing. For 113 years, men were sent to the end of the line to dig coal inside a mountain that kept most of its secrets. Today the prison is a historic site, and visitors and paranormal investigators report shadow figures, whispering voices, and freezing cold spots in the halls.

In this episode of Destination Terror, a father searching for his missing four-year-old daughter follows her tiny footprints to the prison gate and finds it open. We also dig into the real history of Brushy Mountain, from the mines and the overcrowded cell blocks to James Earl Ray's famous 1977 escape and the hauntings people still talk about.

Bolivia's North Yungas Road has a nickname it earned in full: the Road of Death. A single-lane ribbon of dirt and stone clinging to the Andes, with a wall of rock on one side and a two-thousand-foot drop into fog on the other — no guardrail, no shoulder, no mercy. It was carved out by prisoners of war in the 1930s, and for seventy years it killed by the hundreds, until it became the only road in Bolivia where you drive on the left, so you can watch your own wheels decide whether you live. But the people who bury their dead along it will tell you the danger isn't only the edge. It's what waits at the bends where the crosses cluster thickest — the women in the fog, standing where no living person ever would.

Tonight we drive it together. First a story: a young truck driver named Elías, one night, one old woman who needs a ride, and every warning his uncle ever gave him. Then the real history behind the fiction — the Chaco War, the unrecoverable bodies at the bottom of the gorge, the offerings made to a mountain that keeps a very exact ledger. In February 1945, close to a thousand Japanese soldiers were driven into a mangrove swamp on Ramree Island, off the coast of Burma. Almost none came out. The legend says saltwater crocodiles devoured them by the hundreds — a slaughter so infamous it landed in the record books as the worst animal attack in human history.

Four thousand people are buried on a hill outside Peoria, Illinois, and most of them don't have names — just numbers, pressed into small flat stones. For eight years, every time one of them went into the ground, a man was there to cry.

He couldn't speak. Nobody ever learned his real name. The staff called him Old Book, after the only thing anyone knew about his past, and they loved him. He dug the graves of strangers and then wept for them under an elm tree at the edge of the field, because no one else was coming.

Then in 1910 they buried him — and roughly four hundred people watched him cry at his own funeral.

This week on Destination Terror, we're going to Peoria State Hospital, and it isn't the asylum story you're expecting. There were no cruel doctors here. No barbaric experiments. The man who ran this place took the bars off the windows and fought the Illinois legislature over the word "incurable." The horror on this hill isn't cruelty. It's grief — thousands of people who died unclaimed in a place that was genuinely trying, and went into the ground under a number anyway.

The Graveyard Elm. The coffin that came up empty. And a hospital superintendent who risked his entire scientific reputation to write down what four hundred people saw, for one reason: so somebody would remember the old man who cried at every funeral.

On the night of August 21st, 1986, a small crater lake in northwestern Cameroon took a breath — and let it out.

There was no fire. No flood. No wound on a single body. By morning, 1,746 people and 3,500 head of livestock were dead across the valley below Lake Nyos, lying in their doorways and their beds with the cooking pots still stacked beside them and the houses still standing. The survivors woke into a landscape with nothing left to point at.

What came out of that lake was invisible, silent, and heavier than air — and it had been building in the black water for four hundred years.

But the strangest part of this story isn't the science. It's that the people who lived there had been warned. Not by geologists. By their grandmothers. There were old rules in that country about lakes — that they hold the spirits of the ancestors, that a white mist can rise off the water and take the souls of the sleeping, and that you do not build your house on the low ground. Some of them listened. Those are the ones who lived.

This week, Destination Terror travels to Lake Nyos: the only place on Earth where the folklore and the physics agree, and the only two-thousandth of the problem that anyone has actually fixed.

Because there's a third lake. And two million people are asleep beside it tonight.
