Hello Story Lovers!

Today's story from Japan and features a wonderful creature from Japanese myth and legend – the Tengu!

Tengus are supernatural beings with special powers and magical items. They can be depicted as part man, part bird, even as part monkey, and they have often been painted or drawn with red faces and long noses or beaks. They are not to be trifled with, as you will soon find out. If you want to find out more about Tengus you can do so HERE.

We love Geraldine McCaughrean's version of the story - 'Never Tangle with a Tengu', which Emily heard as a child and we owe credit to.

Hi Story Lovers! While you’re waiting for the next new story, we’ve decided to look back into the archives at some stories that got a bit lost for a while.

Every other week, we will be giving these episodes a spot light and calling them 'the lost stories'.

Our story this episode takes us to ancient Egypt, land of pharaohs, gods, desert, hieroglyphs and the river Nile.

And a goddess who will not rest until her loved one is restored to her.

The story is about death, but also about life. The ancient Egyptians honoured and preserved their dead, believing that they would be reunited in the Afterlife. If you want to find out more about the Ancient Egyptians, you can do so HERE.

Our story has many many versions all around the world - Africa, Malaysia, Korea - but this is a Japanese version of the story. It features the Hare of Inaba, who is in other Japanese tales. In this story, the clever little hare gets the better of some snappy crocodiles.

Hi Story Lovers!

This episode we have a funny story with a serious message. And it comes from the country of Botswana in Southern Africa. It is a beautiful country of plains and deltas, as well as peaceful villages and bustling towns and cities. You can find out more about Botswana HERE.

And this story comes from a long time ago and contains a wise message that we still need to hear today. We found this story in a brilliant collection called Bury My Bones but Keep My Words: African Tales for Retelling.

Every other week, we will be giving these episodes a spot light and calling them 'the lost stories'.

Our story comes from the Louisiana Bayou. It's a Cajun story, and you can learn more about Louisiana and the rich Cajun culture HERE.

The little song we sing is a French Cajun ditty. The lyrics are quite horrid but also funny:

Hello listeners!

We are delighted to bring you this wonderful tale from Granada in Spain! Granada is a beuatiful city at the the foot of the Sierra Nevada. When we visited there, we found it very magical. You can find out more about Granada HERE.

We found a version of this folktale in the book Three Golden Oranges and other Spanish Folktales. It's a bit old fashioned about disability so we made some changes to be more sensitive. We hope you like our version.

Huge thanks to our friend Maria Gomez-Diez for her help with this lovely story.

Hey story lovers! While you’re waiting for the next new story, we’ve decided to look back into the archives at some stories that got a bit lost for a while.

Every other week, we will be giving these episodes a spot light and calling them 'the lost stories'.

Our story is all about the wise fool Nasruddin.

He’s a wonderful character whose tales are told all across the Islamic world – India, Pakistan, the middle east, turkey, Afghanistan, even parts of Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Russia, even China.

Mullah Nasruddin is sometimes called 'Hodja' – which means master, and his lessons are very interesting. He gets up to all sorts of funny antics, but we also learn that he can be unusually wise. Lots of people go to him to advice – from peasants to Emperors.

You can find out more about Nasruddin HERE and there is a lovely book of his tales HERE.
