Most people believe that if they can just save $1 million or $2 million for retirement, they’ll be set for life. But what if the hardest part of retirement isn’t reaching your number… what happens after?
In this video, we break down the retirement income puzzle, a concept introduced by Nobel Prize-winning economist William F. Sharpe, and explain why turning your retirement savings into reliable income is far more complex than building wealth in the first place.
    If you’ve ever wondered:
    • Is $1 million enough to retire?
    • Is $2 million enough for retirement income?
    • How do I safely withdraw money from my portfolio?
    • How do I protect against sequence of returns risk?
This video walks through the real risks retirees face—and how to build a plan that actually works in the real world.
    • The tradeoffs between guaranteed income (Social Security, pensions, annuities) and investment portfolios
    • Why retirement planning is a distribution problem
    • How small adjustments in spending (3%–5%) can significantly improve your retirement success rate
    • How to build a retirement income plan that balances growth, stability, and flexibility
We also explore research from leading retirement experts like Michael Finke and David Blanchett, showing why stable, predictable income in retirement often leads to greater financial confidence and peace of mind compared to relying solely on a volatile investment portfolio.

What is a safe withdrawal rate in retirement—and is the 4% rule still valid today?
In this video, we break down the truth about retirement withdrawal strategies, including whether you can safely withdraw 5%, 6%, or even 7% from your portfolio without running out of money. Using real historical market data and research from William Bengen, we explain how the 4% rule was originally designed—and why it may be more conservative than most retirees actually need.
We analyze how sequence of returns risk, inflation in retirement, and stock market performance impact your retirement income strategy. You’ll see real examples of retirees who started in different market environments—from worst-case scenarios like 1973 to strong market periods like 1975, 1982, and even the 1990s—and how their safe withdrawal rates ranged from as low as 4% to as high as 7%–10%+.
This video introduces a practical, real-world retirement withdrawal strategy using guardrails—based on research from Michael Kitces and Jonathan Guyton—that allows you to adjust your spending based on market performance instead of relying on a fixed percentage every year.
If you’re planning for retirement, already retired, or trying to figure out how much you can safely withdraw from your 401(k), IRA, or investment portfolio, this video will give you a clear, data-driven framework to make better decisions.

  7. How Your Investment Portfolio Should Change Over Your Lifetime (Data-Backed)

    Show notes

Most investors are taught to think about asset allocation as a single, permanent decision — how much should be in stocks, how much in bonds, and what their risk tolerance is. But real investing doesn’t work that way. Your investment portfolio should change over time, because the job of your portfolio changes as your life changes.

In this data-driven video, Erin Moriarity of Erin Talks Money walks through how a smart investment portfolio evolves across every stage of life — from your 20s and early accumulation years, through mid-career, pre-retirement, early retirement, and late retirement. Using real research and lifecycle investing principles, this video explains why the same portfolio doesn’t work at every age, how risk actually changes over time, and how to design a portfolio that supports long-term financial security without forcing bad decisions.

You’ll learn how to think about risk tolerance vs. risk capacity, why human capital matters early in life, how sequence-of-returns risk affects retirees, and why balanced and income-oriented portfolios play different roles depending on your time horizon. This video also covers how to structure a retirement portfolio for income, flexibility, and longevity — including why some retirees may actually need more growth later in life, not less.

This is not prescriptive financial advice or a one-size-fits-all allocation. Instead, it’s a clear, practical framework for understanding how portfolio construction should adapt as your priorities, income, and spending needs evolve — helping you build a portfolio you can actually live with for decades.

  11. The 4 Levels of Investors (Most People Are Stuck at #2)

    Show notes

If you’ve ever wondered whether you should be maxing out your IRA—or felt behind because you’re not—this video breaks down what the data actually says about retirement savings in the U.S. and why most people are asking the wrong question.

According to recent IRS data, only about 54% of traditional IRA contributors max out their accounts. But here’s the reality: that statistic doesn’t tell the full story.

In this video, we go beyond IRA contribution limits and explore how Americans actually save for retirement—and why IRAs are not the primary savings vehicle for most households.

Instead, we break down the 4 types of investors (or tiers of savers) and explain how real people build wealth over time using different account types like 401(k)s, IRAs, and taxable brokerage accounts.

    You’ll learn:

Why employer-sponsored retirement plans like 401(k)s and 403(b)s dominate retirement savings in the U.S.
How access to a workplace retirement plan dramatically increases the likelihood of building wealth
Why IRA contribution data can be misleading—and who is actually using IRAs
The difference between Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, and backdoor Roth strategies
How high-income earners stack accounts across 401(k)s, IRAs, and taxable brokerage accounts
Why taxable brokerage accounts may be one of the most powerful and flexible tools for long-term investing
How to think about retirement planning, tax diversification, and investment strategy in a more complete way

We also walk through the behavioral patterns behind saving and investing, including how income level, employer access, and financial systems shape outcomes over time.

You’ll see why some people remain stuck in the early stages of saving, while others build a fully integrated investment strategy that supports financial independence and even early retirement.

This video is not about telling you which account is “best.”

It’s about helping you understand how 401(k) investing, IRA contributions, Roth strategies, and brokerage accounts work together to build a complete financial system.

Whether you’re just getting started, trying to optimize your retirement strategy, or deciding between maxing out your IRA vs. investing in a brokerage account, this breakdown will help you make smarter, more confident financial decisions.

  15. Medicare Advantage vs Medigap: What People Regret Learning Too Late (Clip)

This is one of the most important Medicare decisions retirees will ever make: Medicare Advantage vs Medigap.

At age 65, many people choose a Medicare plan based on monthly premiums and short-term costs. But years later, many retirees discover that the real trade-offs between Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies become much more apparent as healthcare needs increase.

In this video, we break down the real differences between Medicare Advantage and Medigap, including how these plans work in retirement, how costs change over time, and why the decision you make when you first enroll in Medicare can have long-term financial consequences.

We’ll walk through realistic retirement scenarios comparing healthy retirees, retirees managing chronic conditions, and retirees facing major health events later in life. These examples help illustrate how out-of-pocket costs, provider networks, prior authorization rules, and annual maximums can affect healthcare spending over time.

Many retirees are surprised to learn that Medicare Advantage networks can change each year, meaning doctors and hospitals that are in-network today may not be in-network in the future. Medicare Advantage plans may also require prior authorization for services like MRIs, surgeries, and hospital stays, which can create delays or additional complexity when receiving care.

At the same time, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans work very differently. These plans typically involve higher monthly premiums, but they offer predictable healthcare costs, broad provider access, and fewer surprises later in retirement.

One of the most important rules many retirees don’t realize is the Medigap six-month open enrollment period tied to enrolling in Medicare Part B. During this window, you can generally purchase a Medigap policy without medical underwriting. After that window closes, switching from Medicare Advantage to Medigap may involve health underwriting, higher premiums, or even denial depending on your health and state rules.

Understanding this timing can be critical when planning your long-term retirement healthcare strategy.

    In this video we cover:

    • Medicare Advantage vs Medigap explained
    • The real costs of Medicare Advantage plans over time
    • How Medigap policies provide predictable healthcare expenses
    • Provider networks, prior authorization, and out-of-pocket maximums
    • The six-month Medigap open enrollment window
    • Real retirement healthcare cost comparisons
    • How healthcare needs change in your 70s and 80s
    • How to think about Medicare choices as part of a long-term retirement plan

Whether you are approaching age 65, planning retirement, or reviewing your current Medicare coverage, understanding how these plans behave over time can help you make a more informed decision.

The goal of this video is education — so you can understand the trade-offs between Medicare Advantage and Medigap and choose the approach that best fits your retirement, your health needs, and your financial plan.

  19. Do This Before RMDs Start (It Could Save You $400K in Taxes)

    Show notes

For free and unbiased Medicare help, dial 510-961-3329 to speak with my trusted partner, Chapter, or go to https://askchapter.org/erin

Roth conversions before RMDs are one of the most powerful retirement tax planning strategies for investors with large traditional IRA balances. By converting portions of a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA before required minimum distributions begin, retirees may reduce future RMDs, lower retirement income taxes, and significantly decrease lifetime tax liability.

Using a realistic case study of a couple retiring with $1.5 million in a traditional IRA, we compare two retirement income strategies: allowing the account to grow untouched until RMDs begin at age 75, versus strategically converting portions of the IRA to a Roth IRA during the low-income years before RMDs start.

With a 6% annual growth assumption, the untouched IRA grows to nearly $2.7 million by age 75, producing a first required minimum distribution of roughly $109,000. That income stacks on top of Social Security benefits and can push retirees into higher tax brackets for decades.

But by using a strategic Roth conversion plan between ages 65 and 74, retirees may be able to fill lower tax brackets intentionally, reduce future RMDs, lower adjusted gross income later in retirement, and significantly reduce total lifetime taxes.

In this modeled scenario, targeted Roth conversions reduce the IRA balance entering RMD age to roughly $275,000–$300,000, cutting the first RMD to about $11,000. The long-term impact can be substantial: total lifetime federal taxes fall from roughly $655,000 to about $250,000–$270,000, potentially saving $380,000–$400,000 in lifetime taxes.

    This video explains:
    • how Roth conversions work
    • why the pre-RMD tax planning window is so powerful
    • how required minimum distributions affect retirement taxes
    • how Social Security taxation interacts with IRA withdrawals
    • why large traditional IRA balances can create retirement tax pressure
    • how tax bracket management can improve retirement income planning

If you’re approaching retirement with a large IRA, 401(k), or other tax-deferred accounts, understanding how Roth conversions interact with RMD rules, Social Security taxation, and retirement tax brackets could have a major impact on your long-term retirement strategy.

Topics covered include Roth conversion strategy, tax-efficient retirement withdrawals, IRA distribution planning, retirement income tax planning, and ways to reduce required minimum distributions in retirement.

As always, this example is for educational purposes and is based on specific assumptions about investment returns, tax brackets, and income timing. Actual results will vary depending on individual circumstances, tax laws, and retirement income sources.
