2273 - Where do the free agents sign?
Show notes
Fantasy Baseball Live! – October 31, 2026 – 9:15 am ET
Segment 1 – The Brewers are the World Series Champions
1.They made it look pretty easy. They came extremely close to a sweep. Were you surprised at how easily the Brewers took care of the Rays?
2.Williams Contreras wins the MVP, but it could have gone to a bunch of people – Cooper Pratt hit .354, Miz won two games, and dominated in Game 5, Abner Uribe pitched 5.1 with 6 strikeouts and no runs. Aaron Ashby pitched 5.2 innings with 9 strikeouts and gave up no hits.
a.I would have loved to see it go to a reliever. It felt like once the Brewers went to the bullpen, the game was over. Your thoughts?
3.Final thoughts on the game.Segment 2 – Viewership was way down – 25% from last season on average
Metric2025 World Series (Dodgers vs. Blue Jays)2026 World Series (Brewers vs. Rays)
Series Average (U.S.)15.49 million11.83 million
Series Length7 games5 games
Highest Single Game25.45 million (Game 7)14.22 million (Game 5)
Lowest Single Game11.15 million (Game 4)8.33 million (Game 3)•Note 10% of the viewers were from Wisconsin. It helped pad the numbers, but it further hurt the advertising rates to MLB.
•No two ways to say it, it wasn’t good for Major League Baseball. It was better than everyone feared, but since most of the money from the WS goes to the league, it hurt. It also suggest that leveling the playing field with salary cap could have more situations like this. Thoughts.
•In the end, I think MLB continues with the salary gap argument as they are looking for structural changes to gain more certainty over profitability. But it will make more small-market teams involved, and with that, MLB MUST DO A BETTER JOB at marketing smaller-market teams. People will watch an NFL playoff game between Buffalo and Jacksonville – just because.Segment 3 – Free Agency
Monday, the free agent doors open, and with a lockout almost absurd for Dec. 2nd, we should see some signing. Let’s interrupt our draft for this week and pick where these guys sign. I guessed at the Japanese guys – well, my AI assistant guessed.1.Tarik Skubal, LHP, age 30

Segments 1 and 2 – Review playoff games
The Brewers sweep the Dodgers.
1.WOW…Just WOW.
2.I’ve read a bunch of articles about the Dodgers need to make changes, etc to compete. Do you think they do?
a.They did win 100 games and their best player was hurt.
b.But, after Skubal, their great pitching just didn’t get it done. Yamamoto lasted only 2.2 innings and 75 pitches including a 12-pitch at-bat with Jake Bauers that did him in. Blake Snell was ok, but still gave up 4 earned runs in 6 innings (3 HR), and Glasnow 4 ER in 4.1 innings. Was it the Yamamoto outing that changed the tide?
c.The hitting also failed – Ohtani hit .192 but did hit a home run in game 4. Freddie Freeman hit .192, Will Smith hit .097, Teoscar - .200, Betts .207 and Max Muncy was platooned.
d.Let’s face it, they are an older team most of their players are on long-term contracts. There’s an old saying that was penned by Earnest Hemmingway in 1926 in the Sun Also Rises. Mike Campbell was asked how he went bankrupt. He answered – gradually, and then suddenly. It’s just the way it is.
e.They do have incredible talent on the farm. It’ll be interesting to see what they do in their return – no changes, promote the kids, or add some veterans. What do you think?Rays vs. Guardians – Guards 2-1
•The Rays haven’t been able to score and the Guardians have done just enough.
•Are you surprised?
•How does this end?World Series
oTB/Cle vs. Brewers – Yes, the Brewers continue as the home team

Rays beat the Yankees – 3 – 0
1.Rice and Volpe showed up, but nobody else did for the Yankees. Are you surprised that the Yankees got swept?
2.A lot of people suggesting the Yankees should move on from Aaron Boone and/or Brian Cashman. Do you think they should? Will they? The Brewers beat the Padres – 3 – 1
1.Did the better team just win here?
2.The Padres seem like they are in a tough spot. They are built to make the playoffs as a wild card team, but are they good enough to make it through to the World Series? The Dodgers beat the Braves – 3 – 1
1.People freaked out after the Braves beat the Dodgers in the second game, but they were in control in games 3 and 4. How much of a chance did the Braves really have?
2.Mahle ended the season very strong. How do you view him as a starting pitcher – Top _________ starter?
The Guardians came back from 0-2 to beat the White Sox (3-2)
1.Their White Sox luck finally ran out. Here’s my take:
1)They just strike out too much:
Game – 3 – They struck out 19 times in 32 at-bats
Game 4 – They struck out 12 times in 33 at-bats
Game 5 – They struck out 21 times in 30 at-bats
Overall – 52 strikeouts in 108 plate appearances (48% strikeout rate)!
2)They used Grant Taylor all wrong. They never pitched him for more than 2 innings in any one game for six months. They threw him four innings in game 1, and he never recovered for the rest of the series. How can you do that to your best arm?
3)Just not enough pitching.
2.Your thoughts?Conference Matchups

a.The Astros got beat up. Is there window closing?
b.The White Sox are off to a strong start in the divisional series. The magic continues.
2.Yankees beat the Red Sox 2-0
a.Disappointing series for the Red Sox as the Yankees beat them on both sides of the ball. What do the Red Sox need to do to get better? Or nothing as their best pitcher returns next season and Roman Anthony should be healthy and Franklin Arias will be up?
3.Padres beat the Cubs 2-0
a.The Cubs scored one run in 18 innings. What happened?
4.Braves beat the Phillies 2-1
a.Aaron Nola had a good second half, but we discussed that he would crush them in the end and he did in the third and deciding game.
b.Acuna hit .111, but had a solid season, going 21-20 in only 107 games. That’s a 30-30 pace and a first round pick. Will you do it?Segment 2 – Divisional Series – Best of 5 – Who Wins and in how many?
1.White Sox vs. Guardians – White Sox up 1-0
2.Braves vs. Dodgers – Dodgers up 1-0
3.Yankees vs. Rays – Rays up 1-0

1.Shohei Ohtani hits the IL with his knee and bicep that have been problematic since June. He’ll be out of the lineup until at least the end of the month.
a.The Dodgers have one 7 in a row and nine up in the loss column over the Padres. Do we see Ohtani in the regular season again?
b.With what we know now, do you drop him in leagues that do not have Injury rosters?
c.Uber prospect Josue De Paula gets the call and is a must-add in all leagues. At least I think so; does he get enough at-bats to matter?2.Let’s look at the standings.
3.Here are 10 players who’ve had a great second half. How will you think of them coming into next season’s drafts? Maybe a round or round range, or move up on your list, etc…

a.Is he a guy to target for 2027?5.One thing that happened over our week off was the Orioles signed Luis Robert Jr. after the Mets cut him. It cost them $4 million for the month. They consequently lost five games in a row, and then LRJ was put on the IL.
a.Is he done in fantasy managers' eyes, or will somebody take a flyer on him in 2027?
b.Fun fact – Do you know that the Orioles paid Chris Davis $3.5 million in deferred compensation in 2026?
i.He’ll be paid $3.5 million until 2032 and $1.7 million until 2037. He last played in 2020.
c.Fun fact 2 – They also paid Bobby Bonilla $500,000. He has a 25-year deferred compensation agreement that ran from 2004 until 2028. Not as bad as the Mets deal. To remind everyone on the Mets deal:
i.The Mets agreed to defer 5.9 million of Bonilla’s contract for 10 years with an 8% interest rate. The $5.9 million turned into $29.8 million, and the famous amount of $1,193,249.20 is paid out from 2011 to 2035. The Wilpon’s and the Mets made the high-interest deal because they talked to their financial advisor, legendary criminal Bernie Madoff, who said he could easily earn double that interest amount, so the Mets made the deal. It clearly did not work out for the Wilpon’s and the Mets. You can’t make this stuff up.
d.Fun fact 3 – There was a lot written about Bernie Madoff and several movies. While everyone knows about the crime and the ensuing drama, the final recovery was announced just last month, and victims got 94% of their actual cash losses. Not trying to downplay the event, but the good news is that most people got back a least the money they invested – nobody will do a movie about that.6.What one hitter are you targeting for this weekend’s FAAB?

3. Roman Anthony finally gets activated from the IL
4. Juan Soto is activated from the IL on Saturday without a rehab – let’s see how that goes
5. PCA is starting to separate himself from Ohtani with a huge game on Saturday – 4 for 6 with three home runs
6. Walker Jenkins gets his first start and his first hit – 1 for 3 with a walk
7. Bryce Miller is moving to the bullpen – which, I’m assuming means more starts for Kade Anderson. Anderson with his second start of his career this week – ok – 4.1 IP, 3 hits, 2 ER, 3K/3BB. The Major Leagues are a bit more challenging than Double-A.

1.Five inning Freddie pitched a gem on Wednesday – 6.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 4K/0BB
a.The Rays core competency is getting their pitchers to throw more strikes. Did they figure something out with Peralta or was it just luck. His next game is against his old team, the Mets next week. Are you starting him?2.Elmer Rodriguez with a nice start on Wednesday against the Astros. 6.0 IP, 3 hits, 3 ER, 6K/2BB. He should have gotten the win, but the bullpen blew it.
a.It looks like it was one and down. If you picked him up, would you hold onto him?3.George Kirby has been terrible of late – 5 starts and a 7.13 ERA. He faced off on Tuesday against the red hot Phillies. You have to sit him, right? 7.2 IP, 6 hits, 1 ER, 9K/1BB and the win.
a.Paul Skenes – same thing. He’s been awful and goes out and fires 6 shutout innings against the Padres – only 4 strikeouts.

a.Do you have any other player that we should just ignore when they get off to a poor start?6.You always say it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon, but even marathon’s have a sprint at the end and we are there.
a.Give us three pieces of advice for fantasy managers the rest of the way.

4.Mercifully, the Dodgers put Edwin Diaz on the IL. Just brutal. Assuming he’s the named Closer for the Dodgers entering 2027, do you think his recent struggles will hurt his draft status or will fantasy managers ignore it and take him as a Top 5 Closer?
5.After Josh Baez’s historic debut, he’s 0 for 21 with 7 strikeouts. He’s now hitting .182. Since very few fantasy managers got his first game, it’s not been great.
a.What do you do? Keep playing him or sit him?6.After being let out of Purgotory – aka Colorado, Cal Quantrill has been put back in the rotation and has posted a 2.79 ERA in those 7 starts with a couple of wins. Not many strikeouts though. Thoughts?
