The Dark History of El Clásico | Joey D'Urso, Tim Vickery & Dotun Adebayo
Show notes
Why is El Clásico so popular?
Real Madrid vs Barcelona is one of football's greatest rivalries. But how much of El Clásico's history do we really understand?
Ahead of Barcelona vs Real Madrid on Sunday, 25 October, Dotun Adebayo and Tim Vickery are joined by football journalist and author Joey D'Urso to uncover the extraordinary story behind Spanish football's biggest fixture.
From Francisco Franco and the Spanish Civil War to Alfredo Di Stéfano's controversial arrival at Real Madrid, the rivalry is rooted in far more than football.
How did Santiago Bernabéu build Madrid into a European superpower? Why did Johan Cruyff become so important to Barcelona's identity? And how did Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and the Galácticos turn El Clásico into a global phenomenon?
The conversation also explores the modern rivalry between Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, Rodri's decision to join Barcelona, José Mourinho's return to Real Madrid and whether LaLiga's two biggest clubs have become too powerful for Spanish football.
Joey D'Urso is the author of More Than a Shirt and the forthcoming Fields of Power, exploring world history through football stadiums.

Neymar, Ronaldo and the Cult of the Individual | Tim Vickery & Henry Winter
Show notes
What would Graeme Souness cost today? Henry Winter reckons £250 million. And he's just sat down with him.
On episode 9 of Football & Futebol, Tim Vickery and Henry Winter go from Liverpool's great midfield general to the Brazilian conveyor belt keeping Shakhtar Donetsk alive, now playing Champions League football at Stamford Bridge.
Henry explains why Souness is respected but not revered, whether he could handle today's players, and the Newcastle tea lady who turned Jackie Milburn's picture to the wall. Tim explains why young Brazilians keep heading to Ukraine, why Flamengo, Palmeiras and Fluminense are fielding some of the oldest teams in football, and why Brazil's new foreign-player cap won't fix it.
Then it's Neymar. Tim was at the Maracanã for a ten-minute cameo in 2009 that showed what was coming, and he gives a blunt verdict on the World Cup penalty that became his last act for Brazil. Plus Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal walkout, what makes a true idol, Glenn Hoddle, Sir Bobby Robson, Diego Gómez's halfway-line screamer and the England v Poland night in 1973 where it all began for Tim.

Liverpool's Kop helped change football culture forever. But is modern football threatening the very fans who made it famous?
In the first episode of FC Camisa Football Book Club, Dotun Adebayo is joined by award-winning journalist and lifelong Liverpool supporter Brian Reade, author of The Kop: A Fan's History of Football's Most Famous Stand.

They explore how Bill Shankly built a unique relationship with Liverpool supporters, how fans fought back against the club's owners, and why the Kop played such a powerful role in unforgettable European nights against Chelsea and Barcelona.

Man City Could Go UNBEATEN… and Still Be RELEGATED? | Tim Vickery & Henry Winter
Show notes
Could Manchester City go unbeaten and still be relegated?
Henry Winter was at Anfield for Manchester City's extraordinary 3-0 win over Liverpool. But with City found guilty of serious financial breaches by an independent commission, and their appeal still pending, one question hangs over the Premier League: what happens to the football if everything changes off the pitch?
Tim Vickery and Henry Winter debate City's future, the atmosphere at Anfield and why the club's financial controversy raises bigger questions about English football.
Across Manchester, things aren't much happier. Lisandro Martínez has publicly challenged Manchester United's leadership, putting Jason Wilcox, Jim Ratcliffe and the club's recruitment strategy under the spotlight. Have United's owners left Michael Carrick fighting a battle he cannot win?
The conversation then moves to the relationship between football and gambling. Tim explains why he refuses betting sponsors and reveals how Brazil's emergency betting ban is affecting its clubs, its politics and its people.
They also look ahead to the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, Marta's extraordinary legacy, Euro 2028 and the rising cost of watching international football.
Tim Vickery in Brazil. Henry Winter in England. Two perspectives on the beautiful game.

“There Ain’t Another One Like Him” | Tim & Dotun on Lionel Messi
Show notes
Lionel Messi has played his final game for Argentina. Or has he? After 21 years with the national team, Messi signed off with a goal and two assists as Argentina beat Benin 3-0 in an emotional farewell at the Monumental.
Dotun Adebayo is joined by South American football expert Tim Vickery to look back at Messi's extraordinary Argentina story, from the 17-year-old Tim first watched at the 2005 South American U20 Championship to becoming a World Cup-winning captain and one of the greatest footballers the game has ever seen.
But Tim also asks whether this really has to be the end. With Lionel Scaloni overseeing a new generation featuring Nico Paz, Franco Mastantuono and an established core of Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez, could Messi one day return without having to carry Argentina on his shoulders?
They also discuss the huge role Jorge Messi played in his son's Argentina career, who could possibly replace the No.10, Tim's favourite Messi moments and the question football will be asking for decades: Will we ever see another Lionel Messi?

Could Jude Bellingham Become England’s Next No.9? | Tim Vickery & Henry Winter
Show notes
Is Jude Bellingham already beyond Paul Gascoigne in the England conversation?
After England demolished Croatia 7-0 in Rijeka, Henry Winter makes his biggest claim yet about the Real Madrid midfielder: after nearly four decades covering the England team, Bellingham is the best England player he has ever covered.
Alongside Tim Vickery, Henry explains why he puts Bellingham ahead of Gazza, whether Jude could eventually become England’s No.9 as Harry Kane drops deeper, and what the historic win over Croatia really tells us about Thomas Tuchel’s England after their World Cup disappointment.
Tim and Henry also look at the growing problem facing South American national teams as Europe’s Nations League shuts out traditional friendlies, what that means for the political power of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, and Alexandre Pato’s extraordinary new chapter at Northampton Town.
Sports Alpha Capital, the consortium involving Pato, has taken a 70% shareholding in Northampton Town Ventures Limited, with the club beginning its new era debt-free and Pato set to join the board. Could Northampton really become the next Wrexham?

Show notes
Brazil and India are about to meet for the first time at senior international level. But this is about far more than one football match.
Indian football expert Arunava Chaudhuri joins Dotun Adebayo and Tim Vickery to explain why India remains one of football’s great untapped stories.
Why are Brazil and Argentina so deeply loved across India? What did Pelé’s legendary visit to Kolkata change? How significant was India’s decision not to travel to the 1950 World Cup? And with a population of more than a billion people, why has India still struggled to establish itself on football’s biggest stage?
They also discuss India’s encouraging draw against Panama, the influence of European football and the Premier League, competition with cricket, South Asian players abroad, India’s regional talent hotspots and whether the right generation could finally transform the national team.

Argentina Have Already Found Their Post-Messi Plan | Tim Vickery
Show notes
Argentina have played their first game since the World Cup, and their first real glimpse of life after Lionel Messi might already be here.
Tim Vickery breaks down Argentina’s 4-0 win over Bolivia and explains why Lionel Scaloni staying could be an even bigger story than Messi leaving. From Nico Paz and Franco Mastantuono competing to shape Argentina’s attack, to Boca Juniors teenager Leonel Flores showing signs of becoming an Ángel Di María-style weapon, Argentina’s next generation is beginning to emerge.
Tim also looks at Exequiel Palacios’ influence in midfield, Cristian Romero captaining Argentina in his hometown, the Lautaro Martínez-Julián Álvarez partnership, and what Argentina still needs to learn against stronger opposition. Is Argentina already building the team that will take them towards 2030?

Africa’s New Football Power & Brazil’s Rebuild | Dotun Adebayo, Tim Vickery and Maher Mehazi
Show notes
The international break is here, but for Africa and South America it means two very different things.
Dotun Adebayo is joined by Tim Vickery and Maher Mezahi to look beyond the usual international-break headlines and explain what is really at stake across two continents.
In Africa, qualification for AFCON 2027 begins. Nigeria start their campaign without Victor Osimhen, while Madagascar provide a reminder of just how quickly the balance of power is changing across African football.
Maher explains the role academies and diaspora players are playing in that change, from Cape Verde and Comoros to Madagascar and Mali, and why getting player development right in Africa is far more complicated than simply copying the European model.
There is also a huge opening fixture between Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. Hervé Renard is back with the Elephants and beginning a new generation, while Carlos Queiroz remains in charge of a Ghana side facing a rebuild of its own.
Then Tim takes us to South America, where attention has already turned towards the 2030 World Cup.
What happens to Argentina after Lionel Messi? Who becomes South America's next great number 10? And can Carlo Ancelotti rebuild a Brazil side that now needs something it once produced almost automatically: midfielders capable of controlling matches?
Plus, why the unusual format of the 2030 World Cup could completely change South American qualifying, and why national teams outside Europe are finding it increasingly difficult to organise meaningful international friendlies.

England Lost to Spain. But Their Bigger Problem Is Coming | Tim Vickery & Henry Winter
Show notes
England have just gone down 3-2 to world champions Spain at Wembley, but Tim Vickery and Henry Winter believe Thomas Tuchel has problems that go far beyond one result.
Why does England still struggle to control the biggest games? Should Trent Alexander-Arnold be starting? And perhaps most importantly, who replaces Harry Kane when England's captain can no longer lead the line?
Tim and Henry also turn to Brazil, where clubs have approved a major reduction in the number of foreign players allowed in matchday squads. Will it create more opportunities for young Brazilian talent, or is the country's player-development problem much deeper?
From Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon to Brazil's disappearing street-football culture, this episode of Futebol & Football looks at how England and Brazil are trying to produce the next generation.

Then attention turns to England. Thomas Tuchel prepares to face world champions Spain at Wembley after a turbulent World Cup, while five players have already withdrawn from the squad.
Plus: why South American players view international duty differently, Brazil's post-World Cup rebuild under Carlo Ancelotti, the strange problem facing South American qualifying for 2030, and what a 64-team World Cup could do to international football.

Tim Vickery: Why Estudiantes’ Libertadores Run Matters for ALL of South America
Show notes
Brazil has won the last seven Copa Libertadores. Now Flamengo, Palmeiras and Fluminense are into the 2026 semi-finals, with Estudiantes the only team standing between Brazil and another all-Brazilian final.
Tim Vickery breaks down an extraordinary week of South American football.
Memphis Depay had the chance to save Corinthians deep into stoppage time, only to send his penalty over the bar. Flamengo were pushed to the brink by Independiente del Valle. Palmeiras somehow survived a late LDU Quito comeback and penalty shootout. Fluminense had to fight their way past first-time Libertadores entrants Platense.
Tim also explains the bigger story behind Brazil's dominance: the financial gap, squad depth and why opponents now have almost no margin for error against the continent's biggest Brazilian clubs.
Plus, we head into the Copa Sudamericana for Boca Juniors vs São Paulo, Vasco da Gama, Atlético Mineiro, Santos and Montevideo City Torque.

On a new mini-series called 'Mini Futebol & Football with Tim Vickery & Henry Winter', Henry is at Wembley after the announcement of England’s latest squad, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer back in the fold alongside Alex Scott, Kobbie Mainoo and Jarrad Branthwaite.

Enzo Fernández Is EXACTLY What Man City Needed | Tim Vickery and Henry Winter
Show notes
Enzo Fernández has taken almost no time to make his presence felt at Manchester City.
After City went down to ten men in the Manchester derby, Henry Winter was struck by the Argentine’s response. His aggression, control and ability to take responsibility made him look, in Henry’s words, like he was playing as two men.
Tim Vickery and Henry discuss why Fernández could be exactly what Manchester City need in their rebuilt midfield, Elliot Anderson’s rise and the controversial Erling Haaland winner at Old Trafford.
Before Manchester, the conversation starts in Venice.
Henry was at Venezia against Fiorentina to watch Franco Mastantuono score a hat-trick. Tim explains why the 19-year-old’s loan from Real Madrid could be a crucial moment in his development, why young South American players can lose momentum in Europe and why Mastantuono may eventually have to change position to fulfil his potential.
They also discuss the changing power structure of South American football, Flamengo’s growing pull, the golden age of British football fanzines, whether journalists have become disconnected from supporters and whether modern football fandom has become more tribal.
Plus, Luka Modrić’s obsession with analysing his own performances, Bruno Guimarães working on how he reacts to mistakes, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo’s support teams, and why longevity at the top rarely happens by accident.

Fan TV Is About Ego. Fanzines Were Anything But!
Show notes
Before Fan TV, social media and football influencers, supporters had fanzines.
Dotun Adebayo and Tim Vickery are joined by writer and broadcaster Daniel Gray to tell the story of the football fanzine movement that challenged clubs, fought racism, questioned authority and helped change British football.
Daniel is the author of Fanzine: The Story of Football’s Alternative Press, his new book exploring the extraordinary supporter-led movement that grew from the terraces during the 1980s and 1990s.
After researching around 8,000 fanzines and speaking to more than 40 editors and contributors, Daniel explains how homemade publications became a genuine force inside football.
They discuss why football clubs were frightened of fanzines, the campaigns against ID cards and racism, Hillsborough through the eyes of supporters, the influence of punk and Private Eye, Brian Clough’s furious encounter with a Nottingham Forest fanzine and why Daniel does not see modern Fan TV as the true successor to fanzine culture.
Plus, why a new generation increasingly tired of living entirely online could yet keep the printed football fanzine alive.
