Apple Music's New Logo, Premiere on Android, McLaren's new logo because they're worried they look cheap
Show notes
Apple Music stretched out to a bold font right before they open their music venue. McLaren dropped a heritage-inspired rebrand that looks a lot like EVERLANE. It's crazy a luxury car brand could be worried about being the cheap luxury car brand.
Also - Riff's new packaging and mascot from Center Design has pen handles for ears, LA Material's brand identity from the Hoodzpah team, GoPro joining the Micro Four Thirds mount family, Steven Bartlett's $400M creator media investment, Google opening search profiles to creators with 10k+ followers, Insta360's new Times Square flagship store, Meta launching camera-free smart glasses, Discord started rolling out its age verification system, Adobe Premiere is finally on Android, Colors of the Year, a clothing line aimed at creators, the Mr. Records game, Apple's in-store zoom shtick, The Beast in Me's title sequences, the Life of a Button website, and more.

LIVE | Moët's Unrecyclable US Open Can, Trader Joe's vs Smucker's, and Walmart's Chicken Purse Bonus
Show notes
Moët & Chandon is trying to be Instagram worthy at the US Open. Their solution was to make their drink look like a tennis ball can, which is really creative, but the materials make it impossible to recycle. Is a good idea worth the waste?
Smucker's is suing Trader Joe's over crustless PB&J sandwiches that look a lot like Uncrustables ...even if Trader Joe's cries squircle.
Walmart is selling a rotisserie chicken purse through a VHS public access ad campaign. And then the strange one: Lupa Dupa and Tung Tung Tung Sahur. If those words don't make any sense to you, that's okay. It's talking about the law of gen AI ownership.
The WNBA's Finals logo gets an update ahead of the playoffs, the Met Gala is dropping John Galliano for next year's theme, Apple's "Surprise and Shine" invite is next week and this week is John Ternus's first week as CEO, a bunch of Photoshop updates, Instagram's wants you to have parties where you show reels on your TV? Behind the scenes images that show the felt coyote puppet from the Coyote vs. Acme set, YouTube finally adds the ability to upload custom Shorts thumbnails, GoPro lives to see another day, and it's getting sold. But also YouTube Markiplier is now largest shareholder, Sam Register is leaving Warner Bros. Animation after 18 years, Font of the Week is all from one foundry this week, an online tool to visualize color is 3D called Weaving the Rainbow, and the ColorChecker palettes photographers use for consisten color turns 50.

JIF's New Branding, Hank Green's AI Policy, and YouTube Partner Changes
Show notes
JIF peanut butter is making its logo move in fun ways, using its own wordmark as the canvas for changing into words like "MiX" and "TiP." 7Up rolled out a minimalist US can redesign with a new lime-forward recipe.
Also, have you heard about the messy design history behind New York's Fearless Girl? It's a rabbit hole. The statue is launching official merch even though they sued the sculptor for doing that years ago, Hank Green established a clear AI policy for creators, YouTube doubled partner requirements, and LinkedIn is testing an anti-slop reporting button.
NYC brings back street sweeping shame stickers, After Effects adds an AI expression assistant, Disney partners with TikTok on creator content, Reddit plans an audio player, and GoPro is in big trouble.

LIVE | 50 State Flags Reimagined, Bethesda's New Logo, and NYC's Grocery Store RFP Bonus
Show notes
The CFDA(Council of Fashion Designers of America - sounds terrifying) made redesigns of all 50 states + 6 US terrirories. Some of fashion's biggest names were part of the project, and now they're flying over Rockefeller Center for the next month. But you can check them out online with a cool website, so we did. Also this week on File New, Bethesda brought back the name "Bethesda Softworks" for its 40th anniversary and introduced this retro glowing logo that has a lot more personality than their existing helvetica-looking one. The studio Thirst redesigned the bee line for Marks & Spencer. It's focused around postage stamps and their country of origin's national animals. They're bright, but they somehow avoid looking like soda. Drizzy is a new brand of peanut butter in a squeeze bottle that is taking a playbook from Graza is coming to America. Seems like a new trend of elitest pantry items? The upcoming government NYC grocery stores are in the need of branding, so an RFP is out. Also, Slack's new out of office emoji set is really cute, the Grateful Dead is leaning into bootlegs with a great app design, Spider-Man: Brand New Day blew it out of the water, Nantucket's antique shop boasting a "No Influencers" sign, Google Earth pulled Nano Banana 2 after only a day, a free grid plugin called GridCraft, and the modernist architecture in House House's new game Big Walk. The Design of The 10 New EU Banknotes, John Oliver takes on Buc-ee's, and a sad AI Copyright Loss
Show notes
The EU is redesigning their banknotes for the first time since 2002, and it's down to 10 options! Now we get to vote on the designs we like (even the Americans). I cut through a high level look at the 10 sets of designs and let you know my thoughts. Then John Oliver is rolling up his sleeves and taking on Buc-ee's! Must be nice to have "forget you" money. lol. But I'm glad he's doing it. Buc-ee's is notorious for bullying other companies out of animal mascots. HBO is notorious for winning court cases.
In some more depressing news, a German court ruled that an AI generated comic version of a photographer's underwater dog photo does not infringe her copyright.
Reddit is threatening to not renew its exclusive deal with Google (and other publications like USA Today, Politico and Business Insider are also mad as they see their traffic fall off a cliff), Substack is leaning on Pangram to detect AI text detector (which I don't trust), and Adam Mosseri says Instagram is banning pickup artist and prank content shot on Meta smart glasses. Some happy news: The Design Boss Summit is coming up and it's entirely free! August 25-26. The first issue of my newsletter Design Cache is live! We highlight 3 After Effects plugins worth checking out and La Mericana is the Font of the Week.

LIVE | The EU Designs New Money, John Oliver attacks Buc-ee's, and a sad AI Copyright Loss Bonus
Show notes
You can vote on the next EU bills! Yes, even if you're not an EU citizen. The Central Bank announced 10 design options for the new bills and opened the vote to anyone in the world. Let's take a look at each. They have 2 theme options: birds or people. The live poll overwhelmingly said birds: 93%.
Also on this episode: John Oliver launched a Buc-Off merch line to taunt Buc-ee's into suing HBO over its beaver mascot lawsuits, and a German court decided that feeding a photographer's photo through AI to make a comic version doesn't infringe her copyright. That surprised me and reminded me of the Obama Hope poster and the Shepard Fairey fight with the AP. Reddit is debating whether to cut off Google,as is USA Today, Politico, and Business Insider. Substack added an AI text detector from Pangram. And Instagram vowed to ban prank videos filmed on smart glasses.
We also cover some resources for motion designers - Citron is a dockable graph editor for After Effects, Tack Studio's released plugins that are new approaches to collect files and alignment.
I also love to talk about the small details in life, and 2 creators both posted about clothing tags. Clayton Chambers and Intermission did some showcasing of them.
And Font of the Week between La Mericana, Galahad and Viroqua.

Van Leeuwen Wins $23.8M, Coca-Cola's RED EVERYTHING Update, and the Fonts AI Can't Read
Show notes
Van Leeuwen won $23.8 million from Rebel in a "dressing" lawsuit over ice cream pints. Coca-Cola is going all in on red. Red on every can regardless of flavor for its big design freshening up. I point out why that might be an issue next time you're at a barbeque. Liberty Mutual introduced a mascot from the Jim Henson Creature Shop, La La Land fixed Ryan Gosling's hand on the poster .(..a decade later), and Logo Zero traces a logo back to when it was selling cheese slicers and census machines.
Later in the episode we look at two designers who coincidentally built typefaces so that AI can't read them. I also walk through the logo process behind my new weekly newsletter, The Design Cache, cover the After Effects guides update, and another font of the week.

Lidl's Piano Playing Dog, World Cup Graphics, and Instagram Picture Comments

There's a hidden dog playing piano inside the Lidl logo according to the internet. A local Maryland favorite got an update and I'm reluctant to criticize it. ...but I do.

Google's New Aesthetic, Blue Wendy's, Spotify's Disco Ball, and More Design News
Show notes
What do we call the dark mode gradient era? The blue Wendy's is practically unrecognizable (and unappetizing?). Also everybody relax, the Spotify disco ball is temporary.
This is the cutdown of the live show.
IN THIS EPISODE:
Google I/O announced a lot, but let's talk about their branding. Wendy's is updating international stores to sky blue. Spotify's Disco Ball wasn't given a fair chance. Google's all in on XR, VR, AI, and audio glasses, but they're calling them intelligent glasses. People are watching vertical YouTube Shorts on their TVs. The new XP Pen Pilot Pro helps you edit videos. Insta360 releases really powerful microphones. Substance 3D updates. National Parks Poster and Sticker Design by Dorothy Waugh. What's in an art movement name. How to make charts with visual integrity. UI/UX accessibility rules. The websites we lost being rehabilitated by The Useless Web. Take a little creative break with NoomaLooma.

Show notes
Threads officially launched their new logo. Here's why it works. Panera's new "It Just Meals Good" campaign looks a lot like Subway. I'm also showing off one of the best Art Director toolboxes I've come across, and a Photoshop plugin that relights your photos for you.
We also get into Pentagram's identity overhaul of St. Paul's Cathedral, new Photoshop features worth knowing, Instagram's crackdown on repost accounts, the Oscars' new rules for AI and VFX, and a Kickstarter tripod that gives me anxiety.
