  1. Paweł Pawlikowski on Fatherland

    Show notes

This week we’re excited to present a conversation from the 64th New York Film Festival with Fatherland director Paweł Pawlikowski, moderated by NYFF programmer Florence Almozini.

An NYFF64 selection, Fatherland is now playing daily at FLC, courtesy of MUBI. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/fatherland

Academy Award–nominated director Paweł Pawlikowski (Cold War, NYFF56) specializes in narratively economical yet emotionally and philosophically expansive historical drama, and his latest film, which earned him a Best Director prize at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, might be his most potent and provocative yet. Set in the aftermath of World War II, Fatherland follows the Nobel Prize–winning novelist Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika Mann (Sandra Hüller) on a fictionalized 1949 road trip across a torn Germany that’s at once reeling from the destruction of battle and in profound denial about its evils and culpability. As they move from the West to the East, Pawlikowski uses Thomas and Erika’s fraught interpersonal dynamics and own familial tragedies to reflect upon a country facing an ever-evolving moral urgency. Cinematographer Łukasz Żal’s beautifully stark black-and-white frames and Hüller and Zischler’s expertly restrained performances combine to evoke a Europe gradually awakening to a new historical reckoning.

  2. Lee Chang-dong on Possible Love, Power Dynamics, and State Violence

    Show notes

This week we’re excited to present a conversation from the 64th New York Film Festival with Possible Love director Lee Chang-dong, moderated by NYFF programmer Justin Chang. An NYFF64 selection, Possible Love is now playing daily at FLC! Get tickets at filmlinc.org/love

Eight years after his widely acclaimed thriller Burning (a selection of NYFF56), the great Lee Chang-dong makes his long-awaited return with Possible Love, an intricately layered drama about two women: a documentary filmmaker who is married to a wealthy businessman, and a working-class woman whose husband was laid off from his last job and brutally beaten by the police during a labor strike. When the documentary filmmaker decides to turn her camera on the working class woman’s family, the chasms of class—and the inevitable power imbalances of nonfiction filmmaking—emerge in a brilliant narrative of simmering resentments, shifting allegiances, and sexual tensions. NYFF was thrilled to welcome director Lee for an in-depth conversation about the new film and his long career of making movies that pierce the heart of contemporary South Korea, laying bare the scars of personal trauma and socioeconomic grievance.

  4. Ken Russell, Vanessa Redgrave, and Mark Kermode on The Devils

    Show notes

Welcome to the final daily 64th New York Film Festival podcast. On today’s edition, we present a special two-part conversation in celebration of Ken Russell’s restored, uncensored cut of The Devils playing on 35mm for one week only starting this Friday at Film at Lincoln Center.

Russell’s infamous adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s novel, about the apparent possession of a group of nuns after one accuses a priest of collaborating with the devil, is at long last available in its full, uncensored splendor.

In 2010, a year prior to his passing, Film at Lincoln Center welcomed Russell for our retrospective Russellmania!, which featured a post-screening conversation on The Devils between the director and Vanessa Redgrave, now available to listen to for the first time.

Then, at the 64th New York Film Festival, Mark Kermode joined NYFF Programmer Dan Sullivan to discuss the restoration, the film’s legacy, and how it continues to be embraced by new generations.
