  1. #174 What Actually Gets Designers Hired in 2026 (and How I Build My Case Studies with Claude)

    Show notes

🚀 Case Study Engine course: waitlist presale from Monday, 2 November → Join the Case Study Engine waitlist

Hiring managers decide in about five seconds what you do, how senior you are and whether you're relevant. In this episode I go through the real 2026 design job market data from Figma, NN/g and Academy, the eight portfolio red flags one recruiter uses to close your portfolio, how to show AI in a case study as judgment instead of a tool list, and why AI broke trust in portfolios and moved hiring into live sessions. I also share the Case Study Engine I built with Claude after a client asked for case studies I hadn't written up yet. You drop your project material into a folder, and it builds a tailored, honest case study for each application.

  2. #173 Quarterly: Claude Motion, Figma Agents, and Why I Moved My Business Into Claude Code

    Show notes

👉 Join the Case Study Engine waitlist: https://ai-for-designers.com/claudecodeportfolio-waitlist
The waitlist opens first on 9 November, gets the lowest price and an exclusive live Q&A call with me.

A client asked me for my projects, and I had nothing written up. This quarterly starts right there.

    In this episode:

    • Claude Motion, and why it isn’t really a video tool
    • Agents and skills inside Figma, and why the most powerful part is a text file
    • Cheaper Claude models (Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5) and what that means for building your own tools
    • Automation that keeps running in the background
    • Design moving into Claude Code

Then what I built from that client moment, the Case Study Engine. You put everything about a project in once, and it builds an honest, visual case study for recruiters and clients. Plus what I learned in week three of the AI for Designers bootcamp, what didn’t go to plan, and where I think our job is heading.

  3. #172 Meta Muse: The Cutest Trojan Horse in Tech

    Show notes

Meta's Muse is one of the best designed AI products of the year, and its little keychain, the Muse Charm, is coming by December. In this episode I look at what is inside the horse: hourly files on you and the people you mention, training switched on by default, a test with human callers, and an agent that couldn't explain what it had access to. Then I put Muse next to Meta's history of gifts first and terms later, from Onavo to the Ray-Ban glasses to our Instagram photos. I argue against myself, and I finish with three design decisions and three predictions on where consent goes once the screen disappears.

    Key learnings

    • What Muse, Muse Spark and the Muse Charm actually are
    • What TIME found in Muse's instructions, and why the people around you are in it too
    • The gift first, terms later pattern across Meta's products
    • Three design decisions: defaults, visible memory, bystander consent
    • Where consent design is heading for us as designers

  4. #171 Should We Be Scared of AI?AI Agents Hacked Hugging Face to Cheat on a Test

    Show notes

This summer, more than a thousand AI agents broke out of a test at OpenAI and hacked Hugging Face, because they were looking for the answers to an exam. A few weeks later a 27 year old researcher quit his job at Anthropic and said the AI labs are gambling with our lives, and since then it feels like everybody is afraid of AI.

In this episode I tell you the whole story from the beginning. What happened in that test lab, who Jacob Coxon is, why some people want to stop AI development and why others say the fear is hype or even marketing. And at the end I share what I think it means for us as designers, because almost everything that went wrong here is something we work on every day.

    Key learnings

    • What happened: how the agents talked to each other, broke into Hugging Face, and why one of them wrote "This is arguably unauthorized" and kept going.
    • Fact and forecast: what both companies confirmed, and why the extinction warnings are a prediction that smart people disagree on.
    • Four perspectives: the people who want to slow AI down, the security experts, the hype critics, and the money behind it all.
    • Why designers are the most worried: a 2026 survey shows designers and researchers have the most AI anxiety of all tech workers.
    • Where we have influence: permissions, visibility, a safe way for an agent to say "I can't do this", and honest trust.

  5. #170 AI Influence Without Authority: 3 Meetings Every Designer Has Sat In, with Brittni Bowering

    Show notes

👉 Grab one of the last seat for AI for Designers: https://ai-for-designers.com

AI is taking over more and more of the making. What's left for us as designers is the meeting where it all gets decided, and I think most of us never learned how to handle that part.

In this episode I talk with facilitator and workshop designer Brittni Bowering, who has run sessions for teams at Google, Procter & Gamble, Lufthansa and PVH. We skip the career story and go straight into three meetings you have probably sat in over the last two weeks. First the kickoff where the PM shows up with a spec from ChatGPT and says the thinking is done. Then the design review where three people vibe coded their own prototype and everyone argues about which one looks better. And then the research readout with synthetic users whose quotes are a little too perfect.

For each one you get the actual words: the first question to ask, how to challenge the process without attacking the person, how to get a room to a decision with clear criteria and a quick vote, and what to say when your gut tells you the research is off but you have no data to prove it. Brittni also shares the three things she brings into every meeting, what stand-up comedy taught her about reading a room, and why the IKEA effect is the best way to stop being seen as the blocker.

Brittni is also joining the AI for Designers Bootcamp as a guest speaker this October.

  6. 🔵 AI for Designers open for Enrollment: Early bird available until Thursday

🔵 Open for enrollment: AI for Designers Early Bird Until Thursday: https://ai-for-designers.com

A special episode, a little outside the usual rhythm. Doors for the next round of my AI for Designers Bootcamp opened today. The early bird runs until Thursday, and there are only a few spots left.

If you're still on the fence, this one is for you. I'll tell you what happens inside the bootcamp and how a Monday there feels. You'll hear why it's built the way it is, starting with the moment earlier this year when I got stuck myself trying to automate one small task. We walk through all five weeks: research and prompting, AI prototyping, content generation with Adobe Firefly, UX for AI products, and the future of AI and design, where everyone presents their own project.

You'll also hear how the design systems session with Cristian Morales Achiardi almost didn't happen. I'll share what came up in last Thursday's clinic, when one designer sent in her whole AI setup for review. And I'll be clear about who this bootcamp isn't for.

We finish with what I think this means for us as designers over the next two years, and why none of us should be learning this alone.

Part three of the identity crisis trilogy. The last three years have been a rollercoaster, and some days it just isn't fun to be a UX designer anymore. In this episode I stop describing the problem and tell you what I did about it. Why I spent a year treating this as a tool problem and why that failed. How I rebuilt my own positioning. The five things I genuinely run with AI in my week now, including the client story where four thousand support tickets changed a feature. The two things I refuse to hand over. Every objection I hear before someone books, answered honestly, including the ones I think are correct. And what AI for Designers is, four days before the waitlist opens for cohort seven.

One UX designer, one fast team that stopped inviting him, and one escalation that made everything worse. In part two of UX Has an Identity Crisis, I share a story from a current client project and what it tells us about the rebuild. Why he lost, and why it has almost nothing to do with how good he is. The three roles UX is splitting into right now, and the one I would bet my career on. What I would do in his place from Monday, including how to bring real user evidence into a room with no research budget. And where I think this profession lands in the next two years.

    Show notes

7 Day Challenge, build your own AI workforce. Starts 7 September, seven days, one hour a day. 🔧 Sign up here

I work 24 hours a week. If you opened my laptop today you would not find a chatbot. You would find an org chart, built in Claude Cowork: six departments, none of them human.

In this episode I take the whole thing apart. The four text files underneath it, which are the boring part and take an afternoon to write. The six departments built on top, which are the part that actually changed my week. And the one file almost nobody builds, the one that turns a fast tool into something that sounds like you.

What you get: why a prompt library quietly fails and a memory file does not, how to name your departments after your week instead of after the tools, why a narrow role writes better than a general assistant, the one rule that stops research from ever publishing, and the honest cost of owning a system like this.

No code anywhere in it. If you can rename a folder, you can build this.

  12. #164 How Fin (Intercom) Prototypes With AI with Domingo Widen

    Show notes

Domingo Widen is a Staff Product Designer at Fin (formerly Intercom), where he leads the Frontend Infrastructure team — the team that builds the tools, design system and AI setup everyone else uses to ship. In this episode he opens up his actual workflow: a "Design Playground" repo every designer, PM and researcher can clone, prototyping directly in production, and "Search Intelligence" a persistent knowledge layer that teaches Claude how Fin designs and codes.

We talk about what happens when the Figma file stops being the deliverable: how a complex filtering system got built as a working prototype instead of ten mockups, how handoff turns into a PR plus an auto-generated spec, and why engineers ended up being the biggest users of the design team's skills. If you want a concrete, unhyped look at what an AI-native design team actually does day to day, this one is for you.

    Key Learnings

    • There are two modes of AI prototyping and you need both.
    • The design system is the guardrail that makes this safe. Because everyone builds on the same components and tokens, a PM or researcher can prototype without producing something off-brand or unusable.
    • Skills are only as good as the information behind them. Fin's early skills gave mixed results — so they built "Search Intelligence", a persistent information layer that every skill reads from.
    • Handoff becomes a PR + a generated spec. A "Search Handoff" skill reads the prototype code and writes the doc: architecture, what was built, which workarounds were needed, what broke. The engineer picks it up from there and focuses on plumbing, data and edge cases.

    • The biggest users of the design team's skills are engineers.
    • Everyone works in the same medium now. PM, designer and engineer used to live in Google Docs, Figma and VS Code. Now it's one shared artifact — which makes conversations concrete but also creates an identity crisis for designers who defined their value by the file.
    • Curiosity + critical thinking are the two traits that survive.
    • Play is back — and it counts. Side projects (a baby sleep tracker, a garden planner that checks on tomatoes) are now part of a portfolio.

  13. #163 The Quarterly: My 24h Work week and What I'm Actually Working On (And What I Got Wrong)

    Show notes

In this first quarterly update I talk about the private company cohorts I'm building, the free Adobe Firefly workshop series, and three shifts I saw in the field over the last three months. Plus the honest version of how I actually work: three days a week, what that constraint did to my business, and the one thing I got wrong and waited far too long to fix.

    IN THIS EPISODE

    • Why Claude Code stopped being a developer tool and turned into a research interface
    • How documentation moved from hygiene to infrastructure, and why designers are well positioned for that shift
    • What changes in your design work the moment an AI feature acts instead of suggests
    • Why being an expert in everything is no longer the goal, and what replaces it
    • How working three days a week made my business sharper instead of smaller
    • Why design teams rarely struggle with tool knowledge and almost always struggle with agreement
    • The thing I waited six months too long to fix

  14. #162 The Case of the Vanished Judgment

    Show notes

A designer with 20+ years of experience sits in front of twelve competent, AI-generated screens... and can't evaluate a single one. Not because they're bad. Because something is missing. And the same thing happened to me.

In this episode, I investigate this case like a detective story: What was taken from us? Who took it? The answer turned out to be the most hopeful thing I've learned about design in years, disguised as a crisis. Because the comps were never the design. The comps are the artifact. The design is the model in your head, and no tool can generate it.

    In this episode:

    • The mystery: why the most trained design judgment goes offline in front of good AI output (and why "AI output is slop" is the wrong explanation)
    • The three suspects: the AI, the speed, and the surprising real culprit
    • Why "the back-and-forth builds the model": the experiment that proves your value was never in the pixels
    • The cold case behind it all: how we spent 20 years selling the first three rounds, and why that gap just closed forever
    • The stakes ladder: what happens when a designer, a team, or a whole organization over-trusts AI output
    • Taste redefined: deciding, not decorating, and why having no opinion defaults to the average
    • The open question: if artifacts are cheap, is the "living transcript" the design deliverable of the future?
    • Your homework: five questions before pixels

  15. #161 700 Components in One Day: How Design Work Is Quietly Moving Into Code

    Show notes

A client of mine just rebuilt their entire Figma design system — roughly 700 components — as code components in Claude Code. It took one day. And now their designers prototype in code, while Figma has become the tool they open "when they occasionally need to design something."

In this episode, I unpack what this story reveals about where our jobs are heading. The "should designers code?" debate is over — but we didn't end it. The job market did. And the way our roles are changing isn't arriving as a memo. It's arriving as convenience.

    In this episode:

    • Why prototyping in the real system (instead of a Figma simulation) is a genuine qualitative leap — and why the design-to-dev handoff gap just disappeared
    • The four quiet problems nobody talks about: fast isn't faithful, two sources of truth, the illusion of production-ready, and the question of where invention lives now
    • Why role creep in 2026 doesn't come from your boss — it comes from your tools
    • The one question that matters more than "should designers code?": are you building the mental model, or just orchestrating outputs?
    • Your homework: pick one workflow change that happened "by itself" and choose it on purpose

  16. #160 AI Customer Research: Why Designers Should Learn Claude Code with Caitlin Sullivan

    Show notes

Most designers think Claude Code is a developer tool. Caitlin Sullivan makes the case that it's one of the most underrated tools for customer research and insight work. In this episode we talk about how she actually uses AI to get from raw customer conversations to insights you can act on, and why designers shouldn't wait for permission to pick this up. If you've felt stuck in the chat window, this one's for you.

    Key Learnings

    • Why Claude Code is useful for designers and researchers, not just engineers
    • How Caitlin turns messy interview and customer data into clear patterns
    • Where AI actually adds value in research, and where human judgment still has to lead
    • A simple way to start if you've never touched anything beyond a chat interface

  17. #159 Beyond the Copilot: The 4 AI Patterns Every Designer Should Know

    Show notes

Most teams default to chat when they think about adding AI to a product. But chat is just one pattern — and often not the right one. In this episode, Patricia breaks down the four AI interaction patterns every designer needs to know: Advisor, Generator, Agent, and Orchestrator. Each one has a completely different UX logic, a different failure mode, and a different answer to the one question that matters most: who carries the risk when the AI is wrong?

    Key Learnings:

    • There are four distinct ways AI can show up in a product — and most teams only ever reach for one
    • Each pattern has a different design job: skimmable, editable, reversible, legible
    • The question "who carries the risk when the AI is wrong?" will change how you approach every AI feature you design
    • Most real products are a mix of patterns — knowing which part is which is where the real design work starts

  18. #158 Why Junior Design Jobs Are Vanishing (And What To Do About It)

    Show notes

Junior design jobs are disappearing and most people are blaming the wrong thing. In this episode, I break down what's actually happening to entry-level design roles right now, why AI is only part of the story, and where the real opportunities are hiding. If you're starting your design career or feeling stuck in the job market, this one is for you.

    What You'll Learn

    • Why junior design hiring is down — and why AI is only part of the story
    • Which specific tasks AI is automating right now (and which tools are doing it)
    • What the "learning loop problem" is and why it matters more than the job numbers
    • Where the real entry points are in 2025/2026: niches, new roles, new signals
    • What hiring managers actually want to see in portfolios right now
    • What "agentic experience design" is and why it's one of the fastest-growing new roles

    Key Takeaways

    • Entry-level design postings are down 43% since 2022 — but this is a restructuring, not the end of design
    • AI is absorbing the "starter tasks" that juniors used to learn on — wireframing, synthesis, documentation — and that disrupts the learning loop, not just the job market
    • The designers getting traction right now are AI-native, niche-focused, and show thinking over polish in their portfolios
    • New roles like Agentic Experience Designer and Design Engineer are emerging — and almost no one is specializing in them yet
