Covering approximately 3.6 million square miles, the Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world and extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Sahel.

Although it is commonly imagined as an endless sea of sand, dunes cover only about 25 percent of the Sahara. 9. Geography of the Philippines: Exploring 7,641 Islands, Culture & Landscapes

    Episode 435

    Show notes

In this episode of Geography 101, we journey across the Philippines, an extraordinary Southeast Asian archipelago where geography has profoundly influenced history, culture, national identity, economic development, and everyday life.

With approximately 7,641 islands scattered across the western Pacific, the Philippines is not defined by a single continuous landmass but by a vast and complex network of islands, coastlines, mountains, volcanoes, fertile plains, and surrounding seas. This fragmented geography has helped create remarkable cultural and linguistic diversity while also presenting enduring challenges in transportation, infrastructure, economic development, governance, and national connectivity.

The journey begins with the country's three major geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Luzon, the largest island, is home to Metro Manila and much of the country's political and economic activity. The Visayas form the geographical heart of the archipelago, while Mindanao contributes its own distinctive landscapes, cultures, resources, and history.

Beyond the islands themselves, we explore how the Philippines' position along the Pacific Ring of Fire and within the western Pacific typhoon region has shaped communities accustomed to earthquakes, volcanic activity, powerful storms, and other natural hazards.

This is the Philippines through the lens of geography: a nation whose thousands of islands have created both extraordinary diversity and complex challenges, and whose people have continually adapted to one of the most dynamic geographical environments on Earth.

Welcome to Geography 101 as we uncover how land, water, climate, culture, and human adaptation come together to shape the Philippines. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com

  10. Leadership Lessons from the World: Turning Travel into Personal Growth with Traycee Mayer

    Episode 434

    Show notes

With nearly 45 years of leadership experience in hospitality, facilities, and venue management, Traycee Mayer has devoted her career to developing leaders and lifting others toward their full potential. As a certified executive coach, she combines coaching and facilitation with another lifelong passion: travel photography. Over the past 17 years, she has transformed photographs from her journeys into meaningful tools that inspire reflection, conversation, and personal growth.

Rather than providing every detail about where each image was captured, Traycee invites people to connect with the deeper message behind it. One powerful photograph features a steep historic stairway inside Diamond Head crater on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Reached near the end of a demanding hike, the stairs are so steep that climbers may feel as though they are pulling themselves upward with their hands. For Traycee, this challenging ascent carries an empowering message: “You are ready to take it on and succeed with enthusiasm. You’ve got this.” Although an easier route now winds around the crater, the original stairway remains a fitting symbol of courage, determination, and the willingness to embrace the difficult path.
