GerryT Podcast With Dave Shiels

Orzhov Lifegain served Michael well throughout the early rounds of Spotlight Hartford, but everything collapsed toward the end. He explains what happened and what he would do with Lifegain going forward.

Meanwhile, Gerry only played one round in the event, yet maybe had a large impact on the outcome of the tournament...

The Spotlight Series comes to Hartford this weekend, and Gerry and Michael are ready with their Standard decks! Gerry is wielding his trusty Momo (although has tried plenty of other stuff), but meanwhile Michael has no idea what to play. He's looking at three mediocre options, but Gerry isn't trying to convince him that he should play Momo.

Even though he should.

Gerry has been an Azorius Momo fan for a while, but only recently played it in a tournament for the first time. He won all his matches (at least the ones he played) and can't wait to talk about what makes the deck so strong.

It's RCQ time! Reality Fracture is legal, so Gerry has been brewing. Is Gerry washed or is Tarmogoyf actually good?

Say what you will about Michael Simonetti, but he's good for ten match wins per weekend. He played Goryo's Vengeance at the Baltimore RC, but it ended up being another glorified RCQ win for him. It's not bad, but it's not great either. Should he go to LA?

Michael had a decent weekend at Spotlight Dallas with Goryo's Vengeance, but the results of that event have him considering swapping decks for his next Modern event.

Gerry's got his eye on TWO different Boros decks in Standard (and thankfully neither of them involve Dragons). What happened to make Boros suddenly look playable and what are these mystery decks???

No, we're not talking about Michael's tattoos, we're talking about the hundreds of dollars we've each individually spent over the last couple of years searching for the most consistent, durable, smooth gaming sleeves of all time.

Wow, they actually did it. Wizards of the Coast actually banned more cards in Standard. This RCQ season is gonna feel fresh, but it's rough out there for folks who invested in a deck. Gerry and Michael have ideas for how the decks with banned cards can adapt, plus what they think the metagame will look like going forward.

Well, there was just a B&R announcement for Standard (and we'll be recording about that soon), so maybe our Standard thoughts aren't very relevant. Thankfully, we spent most of the episode talking about Devoted Druid in Modern!

However, Gerry did deviate and play Humans to a Top 8 finish...
