  9. Day of the Dead: A Judge Investigates Trump’s Golf Course Plans, and Bryan Adams Takes Aim at Trump

    Episode 1092

    Show notes

In this Day of the Dead edition of Good News for Lefties, weekend host Wendy King covers the latest clashes over presidential power, election rights, and public safety—and shares stories of greater access to the outdoors and a musical protest against political bluster.
A federal judge has opened an investigation into whether Trump administration officials misled the court in a fight over the president’s plan to redevelop East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C. The judge has restricted further tree clearing while the legal battle continues. In Texas, an ICE officer has been indicted on felony assault charges after prosecutors alleged he struck a man with his vehicle while pursuing someone else. Oregon’s gun safety laws rank among the strongest in the country, but advocates say more is needed to prevent shootings. The state’s Measure 114—which would require permits, safety training, and completed background checks for gun purchases—remains tied up in court. And in Alaska, the state government is urging a federal judge to dismiss a Justice Department lawsuit seeking to halt certification of a close U.S. Senate race, warning against federal interference in state elections. Plus, Wisconsin has opened a new Braille trail at Havenwoods State Forest, giving blind and visually impaired visitors raised-letter signs, audio features, and white canes to help them experience the outdoors. And Canadian rock star Bryan Adams has released “Lake Ontario,” a song pushing back against Trump’s proposed renaming of the lake and celebrating its Indigenous name and Canadian roots. 11. Immigrant Rights, Election Protection, and Mombie Zombies

    Episode 1091

    Show notes

In this Halloween edition of Good News for Lefties, Wendy King shares stories of people defending voting rights, protecting the right to legal representation, restoring wildlife, and turning a little Halloween mischief into a force for good. Immigration legal-services groups are suing to stop the Trump administration from hiding the locations of thousands of people facing deportation, arguing the change makes it harder for detainees to find lawyers and defend their rights. Meanwhile, a federal appeals court has again rejected the administration’s effort to set aside 20,000 California ballots it claims may have been cast by noncitizens, finding the plan could cause serious harm to the election system. Wendy also covers a New Jersey bill that would keep federal law enforcement and military personnel away from polling places and ballot drop boxes, amid concerns that their presence could intimidate voters. And former FBI Director James Comey is asking a court to dismiss federal charges against him, with his attorneys arguing the government failed to secure a grand jury indictment before the statute of limitations expired. Plus, American Prairie’s bison herd has topped 1,000 for the first time, an encouraging milestone in the effort to restore the Great Plains. And Fairfield, Connecticut’s “Mombies”—moms who first came together to perform Thriller as a Halloween flash mob—have built a joyful community and raised more than $1.4 million for breast cancer research. Join Wendy for these stories and more, and share the episode with someone who could use a little Halloween-season optimism. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com
