Habitat Podcast
The Habitat Podcast is a podcast for land and wildlife habitat managers, and for hunters who learn and utilize different types of habitat in their hunting strategy. We interview hunters and habitat managers from across the country, picking their brain to learn their success's and failures. We are different in the fact that we are not the experts. This podcast is for us and the listeners to learn a thing or two, from the experts we analyze.

409: Should You Keep Hunting a Buck After You Bump Him? with Brett Smith
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #409 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Brett Smith!
We discuss:
-Brett explains why he scouts aggressively during the rut instead of waiting for a buck to come to him.
-He recalls bumping the same buck four days in a row and weighs the pressure difference in Michigan.
-He targets leeward ridges and the top third of draws where cover, wind and fresh sign come together.
-He walks the road between public-land parking areas to enter overlooked cover without going miles deep.
-He uses concentrated rubs near bedding to plan morning sits instead of trusting every fresh rub line.
-He J-hooks into a setup to keep his scent and boot tracks away from approaching bucks and does.
-He shakes dry oak branches and follows with a grunt to mimic a buck working a scrape near bedding.
-He picks an average tree in the right location over a perfect tree farther away from the action.
-He explains how he uses rising morning thermals and evening drainages to manage his scent.
-He shares why he stopped scoring and posting bucks and wants hunting to mean more than a number. And So Much More!

408: How He Makes 8.5 Acres Hunt Like A Much Bigger Farm
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #408 - In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Art’om Rank!
We discuss:
-Art’om splits one overgrown cedar thicket on his 8.5 acres into three separate bedding areas.
-Trail cameras show bucks moving cedar to cedar as the wind shifts, and he sets up in the gaps between.
-He studies forestry at Glenville State and gets a key to the college farm so he can hunt before class.
-He splits an acre food plot into five zones of sorghum or miscanthus so a buck has to walk in to check it.
-That divided plot puts a buck he calls Mr. Clean at 18 yards, exactly the way he drew it up.
-He plants one or two Chinese chestnuts near where he wants to kill a buck, then backtracks him on camera.
-A buck’s core bed tells him the cover type, so autumn olive bedding points him to every autumn olive patch.
-A noon trail cam photo of a target buck means he hunts that evening, opposite the way the buck is facing.
-An old oak limb with no scrape under it works as a “doorbell” every deer touches coming onto his parcel.
-Clover seeded on his access trails pulls deer into brassicas wrapped by an overgrown apple orchard. And So Much More!

407: He Accidentally Shot a Buck in the Head, Then It Tried to Kill Him with Mike Hlavaty
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #407 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Mike Hlavaty!
We discuss:
-Mike hunts a coal strip mine in Muskingum County alone at age 10, long before youth seasons or hunter safety.
-He and his brothers build ladder stands out of electrical conduit, hammering the steps flat and painting them.
-Mike crossbow-shoots a buck in the head the night before Ohio's gun opener, and it runs him over in the dark.
-He escapes by ramming the buck's head into a TV antenna tower, then waits it out from his stand for hours.
-An antler opens his neck up behind his ear, he's in the ER until 6 a.m., then goes back out and shoots a doe.
-Mike buys land with tillable ground so the farm rent pays 100 percent of his real estate taxes.
-A reappraisal tripled some of his property values, and he calls a tax on owning land a sin.
-U.S. Fish and Wildlife's partner program designs his wetland units, built on clay-core "mushroom" berms.
-His excavator bids nearly 50 percent under the other contractor and saves Mike a bunch on the build.
-In the spring his wetlands hold 500 to 1,000 pintails at a time, plus hundreds of swans.

-Gavin plants six micro plots, favors clover, and keeps most of his roughly 26 acres in thick cover.
-Gavin uses five cell cameras for inventory and past movement patterns instead of chasing fresh pictures.
-Gavin builds a close-range funnel with old hinge cuts, fence openings, a cedar stand, and mock scrapes.
-Gavin adds kiddie-pool water holes even though a spring-fed creek already runs through the property.
-Gavin stays off his property ahead of its prime rut window instead of hunting it hard in early October.

404: How He Designed 80 Acres In Michigan So That Bucks Never Leave (Virtual Property Tour) with
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #404 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Cory Franceus and Chad Fike!
We discuss:
-Chad goes from years of small bucks to big Michigan deer after three trips to Tony LaPratt's boot camp.
-Cory reads an 80-acre Big Rapids-area rectangle by what surrounds it: ag, cattle and a block of wet cover.
-Chad splits two wide-open fields that blew deer out every hunt into about ten plots across six acres.
-A rifle blind on the hill by the house covers the whole bottom field without anyone walking through it.
-The landowner's wife hunts a blind 40 yards off a seasonal road where a bear sleeps on the step.
-Chad row-thins two pine stands north to south for sunlight and leaves a 10-12 foot scrape perimeter.
-Cory keeps any autumn olive that holds a bed, rub or scrape and would spray the rest of them.
-Cory's nightclub analogy explains why one big open field sends a mature buck off your property.
-The Marriott blind has power, two heaters and a Wi-Fi booster, so the owner takes Zoom calls from it.
-The owner dug the farm's two ponds on an excavator at age 11 and swore he'd buy the place one day.
And So Much More!

401: How Janis Putelis Turned 50 Acres Of Big Woods Into A Whitetail Paradise
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #401 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Janis Putelis!
We discuss:
-Janis cut every white pine off 20 acres and released the oaks hiding underneath them.
-Why 40 acres is barely enough timber for a logger to justify moving his equipment in.
-The US Fish and Wildlife Habitat Partners Program funded his 7-acre oak savanna restoration.
-Doing the slash and burn work himself credited against his share instead of costing $7,000.
-Ground deer used to walk straight through now has a bed every five minutes you walk.
-Sam Tumberg's buckthorn rule: mow it in spring, then spray the regrowth after July 4th.
-Buckthorn cut to the ground on May 15th was four to six feet tall by the third week of July.
-Roughly fifty trees dropped by hand turned a dead ridge saddle into a big buck's route.
-His dad is hunting the September 15th Wisconsin opener from a blind he built by hand.
-Deer refuse to travel his one long straight road but hammer every winding trail he cuts.

399: Turning 40 Acres of Worthless Swamp Into a Big Buck Sanctuary with Joe Allera
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #399 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Joe Allera!
We discuss:
-Joe buys 40 acres of wetland because 40 acres of tillable ground was priced out of reach.
-Joe cuts over 100 deer beds into his swamp transitions with a weed whacker and a saw blade.
-Joe reads marsh elevation off the vegetation: phragmites highest, reed canary the deepest.
-Joe hunts the wrong wind on purpose, blowing his scent straight into the bedding area.
-Eight mature bucks have come out of one Redneck box blind, all on the same wind.
-Joe runs a $100 Amazon ozone closet and says a boogeyman ain't never been smelled.
-EHD killed 40% of the deer in Joe's area last year and he is lowering expectations.
-The tamarack point by Joe's lake holds the biggest bucks within five miles.
-Joe builds mock scrapes he calls cat toys and a merry-go-round of four around one oak.
-Joe fills five tags in seven weeks by taking mid-October to Thanksgiving off work.

398: Is Some Rain Worse Than No Rain At All For Food Plots? with Lincoln Rohn
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #398 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Lincoln Rohn!
We discuss: -Lincoln pulled about 50 stumps out of an acre-and-a-half plot near Free Soil and left three on purpose. -Why Lincoln leaves stumps and pine pods standing in a plot — deer hold to structure the way bass do. -The stump bucket serration that laid Lincoln's knee open, and why he pulled his pant leg down and kept cutting. -Lincoln walked into his cabin carport this spring and found $100,000 of equipment in a foot of water. -Why Lincoln will not warranty a food plot install, and what he offers a client instead when it won't rain. -The raccoon killing spree that brought his turkey flock back — and created a brand new plot problem. -How $4 gas and the strikes in Iran shut off Packer Maxx website sales for ten straight days. -The standalone crimper drum that slipped to spring, and why Lincoln refuses to release it early. -Lincoln's read on Michigan's recreational feeding law: no CWD risk at 100 yards, a crisis at 101. -Why Lincoln believes a one-buck rule gets more does shot, and the $4.2 million grant he can't ignore.

397: Does Killing a 170" Buck in Iowa Make You a Better Hunter?
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #397 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Adam Miller!
We discuss:
-Why Adam says killing a 170 in Iowa Zone 7 wouldn't make him a better hunter. -How Adam drew Iowa Zone 7 with three points and is going mostly as Joe's cameraman. -Why out-of-state deer forgive mistakes that Michigan deer would never let you make. -Adam missing the same buck three times in a single sit and emptying his quiver. -The October 23rd school drop-off that cost him a shot at a giant tending a hot doe. -Why Jared likes the last 10 days of October in Michigan better than November. -Adam's new 300-acre lease with only 10 acres of timber, all stacked in the center. -Why that center wood lot beds deer early and turns into a ghost town after leaf drop. -Where acorns rank against alfalfa, beans, and corn when deer have unlimited food. -Year five of Adam's public land Patreon camp with 25 to 50 guys and zero assigned spots.

396: The Real Reason Michigan's New Baiting Law Doesn't Make Sense with Josh Arborgast
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #396 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Josh Arbogast!
We discuss:
• Josh explains how Michigan's new baiting law only restricts corn within 300 yards of a home.
• He ties that 300-yard rule to Rep. Ken Borton's personal grudge from an old baiting ticket.
• Michigan's earn-a-second-buck pilot in five counties heads toward a final NRC vote around August 12th.
• Josh's biggest gripe: the pilot doesn't yet require the second buck be taken in the same county as the doe.
• Roughly 275 hunters under 40 packed the last NRC meeting, the biggest young turnout Josh has seen.
• A doe pole run by his friend Drew donated about 1,500 pounds of venison to Hunters Feeding Lenawee.
• Elliot has already shot around seventeen does this season, just around his own house.
• There's a statewide network of processors that will take donated deer meat, even outside doe-pole events.
• Josh bought a new Matthews Arc 34, selling his old bow in the parking lot of an NRC meeting.
• He permanently mounted a diesel heater fuel tank to his trailer after last year's "game changer" upgrade. And So Much More!

395: What 20 Years of Food Plotting For Clients Taught Him with Kasey Thren
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #395 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Kasey Thren!
We discuss: -His client base sits in sandy central Michigan soil, and he's learned to work with it, not against it. -He switched to a First Products no-till drill after decades of rototilling to save time. -He leans on Morgan Composting's Dairy Doo and humic acid instead of pricier synthetic fertilizer blends. -A simple wire utilization cage tells him instantly whether a property has an overbrowse problem. -He warns hinge cuts only survive about 50% of the time, even with perfect timing. -He calls windstorm-style clearcutting a "tornado effect" that jumpstarts natural deer food and cover. -His forester lets him rope off "retainer islands" inside clearcuts just for deer cover. -His rule for clients: if you kill a buck, shoot two does to keep herds balanced. -Boot hygiene is one of his biggest lessons — he's watched deer and coyotes avoid his scent trail on camera. -He started filming quick client videos so his kids could hear his voice if he's ever gone.

394: Two Fields, 250 Yards Apart, Completely Different Deer Pressure — Here's Why with Al Tomechko
Show notes
Habitat Podcast #394 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Al Tomechko of Vitalize Seed Co!
We discuss:
• Grass pressure is higher than usual this year, even in Albert's no-till fields.
• Two exclusion fences 250 yards apart show drastically different deer browse pressure.
• A Kentucky agronomist's study found early-terminated cover crops outperformed planting green.
• Albert plants clover-chicory-oats in fall, then frost seeds more clover each spring.
• That one-two punch adds roughly 15 pounds of clover per acre in six months.
• The new Grain Bin Mix is a $60, free-shipping gap filler, not a standalone plot.
• Vitalize's native cover, browse, and pollinator mixes are now shipping after episode 386's preorder.
• No-Till Nurture avoids the salt load and nutrient stratification of synthetic triple-13.
• Jared plans to drill Carbon Load into standing Nitro Boost to hedge against drought.
• Always jar test before tank-mixing Vitalize foliar products with glyphosate or roundup. And So Much More!

We discuss:
• Habitat mistakes often become your greatest teachers.
• Property-specific habitat beats one-size-fits-all advice.
• Chainsaw work produced Brent's biggest habitat improvements.
• Direct-seeding acorns can outperform planted trees.
• Thick woody cover consistently attracted more mature bucks.
• Switchgrass wasn't the best solution for his property.
• Access improvements changed how he hunted mature deer.
• A single community scrape outperformed multiple scrape locations.
• Trees and shrubs created better long-term habitat value.

Show notes
Habitat Podcast #391 - In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Doug Holmes!
We discuss:
• The Downburst 960 is the 9th generation design after years of testing.
• The original idea came from ruining a food plot due to seeding errors.
• Native seeds require a completely different planting approach.
• Drop seeding is often ideal for small-seeded habitat plantings.
• The new 960 was specifically redesigned to handle fluffy native seeds.
• Accurate seed rates save money when planting expensive seed.
• Habitat Day 2026 had the largest turnout in event history.
• Doug's property shows what 8+ years of habitat work can become.
• Native habitat plantings may become a major focus moving forward.
• Community and shared learning continue to be the biggest value of Habitat Day.And So Much More! Shop the New Native Seed Collection from Vitalize Seed here: https://vitalizeseed.com/collections/vitalize-native-product-line
