Hashem Echad: How Rav Kook Sees the World | with Rav Eitan Aviner - Introduction Epiosde
Season 3, Episode 1
Show notes
What holds a great thinker's Torah together?
The Mishnah introduces each sage with the words "hu haya omer," "he used to say." Behind everything a great thinker teaches stands one central idea, the spine of his thought. In this introduction to our new series, Hashem Echad, Rav Eitan Aviner joins Joseph Maimon to set out the path ahead: uncovering the one idea at the heart of Rav Kook's thought, and seeing how it reaches every part of Torah and of life.
Rav Eitan shares how he came to Rav Kook. He grew up in the States and came to Israel at 18. For years, Rav Kook's writings felt like "Chinese" to him, until learning with Rav Uri Sherki opened the door. Today, Rav Kook's Torah is at the center of how he sees the world.
In this episode:
• Rav Eitan's journey to Rav Kook's Torah
• Why we learn thinkers, not just topics
• What "hu haya omer" means, and why every great thinker has one
• Why Rav Kook's vision is all-encompassing
If you've ever opened Rav Kook and felt lost, this series is for you. No background needed.

The Hidden Link Between Confidence and Humility? | Believe in Yourself Episode 1 with Rav Zev Reichman

Can I Feel Good About Myself and Still Be Humble? | Believe in Yourself Ep. 1 with Rav Zev Reichman
Sometimes we feel confident and elevated, and worry it’s ga’avah. Other times we feel restless and unsettled, and beat ourselves up for that too. Rav Kook says both feelings may be good: the confidence can come from the holiness of the soul within us, "חלק אלוק ממעל," and the restlessness from yearning to climb higher. But he adds a condition: weigh it carefully so it doesn’t cross the line, and above all, never let it lead to fear or sadness.
The text we learned:

Believing in Yourself: A New Series with Rav Zev Reichman | Introduction
Rav Kook taught us the following: believe in yourself, in the goodness within you, and grow from there.
In this introduction, Rav Zev Reichman shares how he came to Rav Kook’s Torah, from summers in Shiloh to the world of Chassidut, and why Rav Kook’s deep optimism, even after the riots of 1929, comes from emunah that Hashem is in everything.
In this series, we’ll learn from Yesh Lecha Kanfei Ruach, a collection of Rav Kook’s writings on human growth, one paragraph, one chavrutah at a time.
