Have A Seat with Chris Hansen

Tyler Devault had a University of Maryland criminal justice degree, a government-contractor job, and a clean record. He also had a 14-year-old girl's number. He was 33. When the "girl" told him her age, he balked: "That's way too young." Then he kept talking. He asked three separate times whether Chris Hansen would be there. He joked about being "set up" and about getting "caught." Then he picked up a pizza, half pepperoni and half cheese, and drove to a house in Harford County, Maryland. He walked in, asked if he should take his shoes off, set the pizza down, and opened his arms for a hug. "Oh, I knew it," he said when Chris appeared. He had seen the shows and knew exactly how this ended. Asked why he came, all he had was "a little stupid person in the back of my head saying, just see what happens." Devault pleaded guilty and got ten years, with one year already served, followed by five years of probation and sex offender registration in Maryland.

Tyler Daigle told his wife he was running to Walmart for work supplies and supper ingredients. Instead, he drove to a house in the Louisiana countryside to meet a “15-year-old girl.” He was married, with kids aged nine and two. He barged through the door before the decoy could finish opening it, then asked if he should take his shoes off. Then Chris told him to have a seat. Daigle couldn’t remember her name, only her age. He said he came to “hang out” and that he “wasn’t going to go that far.” When the lies ran out, he admitted he had a feeling it was a sting. He came anyway. He pleaded guilty and got five years in a Louisiana prison, then probation and sex offender registration. Recorded from the field in Polk County, Florida, Chris also reports on a disturbing trend in the new sting. He also answers a listener’s question on the Michigan ruling that pulled thousands off the sex offender registry.

Aquatica water park with the wife, the kids, and his parents. Then Roland Jr. Jean got in a car with his cousin and drove to meet a "14-year-old girl." He was a 26-year-old seafood chef from Vero Beach. He had two kids under four, a wife who thought he was hanging out with his "homeboys," and $100 in cash for a "quick visit." In the chat he asked if she was a cop, then came anyway. In this episode of Predators I've Caught, Chris takes you inside a May 2026 sting with the Martin County, Florida Sheriff's Office. Jean walked into the house carrying a loaded .40-caliber Glock. When Chris told him not to leave, he bolted. Deputies took him down and found the pistol. Outside, his cousin's trunk held two more handguns and two assault-style rifles, loaded. Jean says he "forgot" the gun was in his pocket and that he would have "felt guilty." He pleaded guilty and got three years in a Florida prison. Chris also answers a listener's question on whether the military shields its own child predators.

He's 72, with a bad heart, a wife of 30 years, and a granddaughter older than the girl he's driving to meet. Charles "Bad Grandpa Chuck" Schmidt even did the math himself, telling the "14-year-old" in the chat he was 58 years older. Then he kept typing. In this episode of Predators I've Caught, Chris revisits one of his first stings with the Harford County Sheriff's Office in Maryland. Chuck stopped for beer, took a pill on the way, and brought condoms. When he walked through the door, he went straight in for the kiss. Then Chris walked in. Chuck claims he "wasn't going to," but his own words say otherwise. When the arrest aired, his wife called it a setup and threatened to sue. Chris has a response, plus Chuck's sentence and what it means for a 73-year-old registered sex offender.

He could have been anyone in a Walmart aisle. A 27-year-old Louisiana mason who laid brick floors for a living. But in September 2025, Hunter Easterling drove ten minutes to a house where he believed a 15-year-old girl was home alone. He knew her age. He knew the risks. He knew the registry was waiting. He came anyway, and he took his shoes off at the door. Then Chris told him to have a seat. What follows is a familiar routine of fading memory, shifting ages, and blame aimed at a child who never existed. Asked what should happen to a man who does what he came to do, Easterling, father of a seven-year-old, says he'd shoot him. He has since pleaded guilty and will serve two years in Louisiana state prison, followed by the registry he feared. Also this week: a listener question about Kik and Omegle, and news of his Simon & Schuster thriller deal.

Chris asks every predator the same question: what would have happened if we weren't here? This case answers it. March 31, 2025. Livingston Parish, Louisiana. By day, 30-year-old Kleider Enrique Garcia Ochoa washes dishes at a local restaurant. Online, he's sending explicit photos to a boy he believes is 15, pressing for nudes, and asking one telling question: are your parents home? Minutes later he walks into the sting house carrying a bag with condoms, car keys, and a Venezuelan passport. Through a translation app, Chris gets lie after lie. He's 25. No, 27. He has a green card. The boy was an adult. Then Ochoa bolts, and he doesn't get far. What surfaced after the cuffs went on was worse. He was in the country illegally, reportedly tied to the Tren de Aragua gang, and the car he drove to the house was part of a suspected human trafficking operation under Homeland Security investigation. Last week, he was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, followed by deportation.

Michael Rhodes did seventeen years in the Louisiana prison system for dealing meth. Hard labor, hard time, the kind that's supposed to take. A year out and working a forklift, he spent two days sending explicit messages to someone who told him she was fifteen - then drove up to a sting house on the river in Livingston Parish in shorts and a tank top for the date. The decoy who let him in works at the parish jail by day. She had him talking about his own record before Chris ever came through the door. Rhodes says he was just talking. In this part of the country, that's a felony. There's a condom in his wallet, a machete in his car, and a fifteen-year-old daughter at home - the same age as the girl he showed up to see. Asked what should happen to him, he finally says something true. Last week he pleaded guilty. Seven years. This time he doesn't go back as a drug dealer.

He ran presidential motorcades. He escorted foreign heads of state through the streets of Washington. And for a month and a day, Lieutenant Matthew Mahl of the D.C. Metropolitan Police — 47 years old, 23 years on the job — groomed a boy he believed was fifteen. He talked about soccer games and homework. He talked about Italy, about schools over there, about a life together after he retired. He sent photos of himself in uniform. He sent photos from the fold-out couch in his office at police headquarters. He knew the age of consent in Maryland was sixteen, and he admitted to the boy he had everything to lose. Then he took the day off and drove ninety minutes to a house in Harford County where he thought the fifteen-year-old was home alone. Chris and Detective Chris Sergeant, the investigator who worked the chats, walks through the sheriff's report line by line, and watches from inside the sting house as a SWAT team cuts the lieutenant off in the driveway. What follows is a confrontation with a man who knows exactly how this works — and says nothing but eight words, over and over. A badge, a security clearance, and a secret a foreign intelligence service would have paid dearly for.
