Why Travel to Meet God? Hearing God’s Voice in Rome (Psalm 84:5) | Daily Devotional and Bible Study

Why travel halfway around the world to meet God when He is already with us? Psalm 84:5 says blessed are those whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.

In today's Bible study, we're walking through what pilgrimage actually is in Scripture, from Abraham's call to go, to the three pilgrimage feasts, to the Songs of Ascent, to Jesus walking the road to Jerusalem every year. We look at why God built journey into the lives of His people, what Psalm 84 means by a heart set on pilgrimage, and why we still go in person when God already lives in us. Grab your Bible, because we're going to be all over the place.

Hearing God’s Voice in Rome | Daily Devotional and Bible Study

Where was the New Testament written? So much of it ties to Rome, and Acts 28:30-31 ends with Paul in a rented house there.

We're taking a short break from our Luke study for a mini series from Rome, so you can join a virtual Bible Study Live retreat from wherever you are. In this first episode I explain why Rome, how my first trip changed the way I read Scripture, and what it's like to stand in the hidden room that tradition connects to Luke's house, the place where I've heard clearly from the Lord.

The first one came from a lot of you: what do we do with the fear that comes from the news and our social media feeds? Then we take a question from our Luke study about why Zechariah lost his voice when Abraham, Gideon, and Mary asked questions and didn’t.

Why Did Jesus Choose Judas? Hearing God's Voice in Luke 6:12-19 | Daily Devotional and Bible Study

Why did Jesus choose Judas when He knew what Judas would do? Luke 6:12-19 says He chose all twelve after a night of prayer.

Today in our daily Bible study we're in Luke 6, where Jesus prays all night before He names the twelve. That night of prayer changes how we read the whole list, including the name at the end. We'll look at why twelve, what apostle actually means, how a tax collector and a zealot ended up on the same team, and what it means that Judas could stand close enough to handle Jesus' money and still not be changed.

Do You Expect God to Heal? Hearing God’s Voice in Luke 6:6-11 | Daily Devotional and Bible Study

The Pharisees came to the synagogue that day specifically to watch whether Jesus would heal. Think about what that means. His enemies had more expectation than most of us walk in with.

Today in our daily Bible study we finish the Sabbath section of Luke 6. We start with the bread of the Presence and what David's story has to do with any of this, then move to the man with the withered right hand. Jesus puts him in the middle of the room, asks a question that reframes the entire debate, and heals him without ever touching him. By the end, men who had been filled with awe a few chapters earlier are filled with rage, and the reason why is worth sitting with.

Who Made That Rule? Hearing God's Voice in Luke 6:1-5 | Daily Devotional and Bible Study

Hungry men picked a handful of grain while they walked, and the religious leaders saw three violations of a capital law before breakfast.

Today in our daily Bible study we start Luke 6 with the Sabbath. Before we get to the grain field, I want you to understand why these men were so rigid, because their grandparents had died for this day. Then we'll look at what Jesus actually broke, which was never the command in Scripture. It was the list that had been built on top of it. This one ends with a question worth asking about your own life: who made that rule?

Am I Doing Enough for God? Hearing God’s Voice in Luke 5:33-39

Most of us are carrying a mental list of what a serious Christian does. Read at 5am. Journal every insight. Pray an hour without your mind wandering. And when we don’t measure up to it, we assume we’re not as close to God as other people are.

I had planned to move into Luke 6 today, but the Lord kept bringing me back to the end of chapter 5. In our daily Bible study we’re still at Levi’s banquet, where someone brings Jesus that exact complaint about his followers. His answer surprised me. He doesn’t defend their devotion and he doesn’t apologize for them. He talks about a wedding, a torn garment, and wine bursting out of an old skin.

What Is God Asking You to Lay Down? Hearing God in Listener Questions

Start with the thing you feel like you couldn't possibly give up. That's usually the one.

It's Friday, so we're catching up and working through questions that came in. Today we talk about using the color method with kids, whether spiritual gifts only operate through tongues, and a question I had to sit with: what has God actually asked me to surrender? I share the closed door that led to my first book, and the hardest thing I've ever had to lay down.
