Carmine Appice: Ozzy, Sharon, Bonham And The Beck Band
Show notes
Carmine Appice joins Scott Penfold in his eightieth year: the Vanilla Fudge drummer John Bonham copied on the nights Led Zeppelin opened for them in 1968, the author of Realistic Rock, the Appice in Beck, Bogert & Appice, Rod Stewart's co-writer on Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?, and, for nine months in 1983 and '84, Ozzy Osbourne's drummer.
He talks about casting Temple Of Blues II with twenty guests (Nugent, Dee Snider, Steve Morse, Eric Gales, Billy Sheehan), how you hit hard at 79 without lifting your arm, what was really going on between him and Bonham, why the Beck band lasted one album, selling his publishing on Sexy and buying real estate instead, and the nine months with Ozzy that he says ended because of Sharon. He goes further on Ozzy and Sharon here than he ever has, including his own view of Ozzy's final months.

Turnstile Said No To Metallica, Headbangers Boat UK, Gillan
Show notes
James Hetfield says Turnstile turned down the chance to open Metallica's M72 stadium tour: "We wanted to get them on tour, and they said no. They're doing good on their own already." Scott Penfold on why saying no to the biggest band in metal is the healthiest thing a young band did this year.
Also today: Lamb Of God's Headbangers Boat gets its first European sailing, Southampton to A Coruña, May 27–31, 2027, with Paleface Swiss, Bleed From Within, Kublai Khan TX, Shadows Fall and Heriot. And Deep Purple cancel Leipzig and Hamburg after Ian Gillan, 81, is hospitalized with a medical emergency; both shows will be rescheduled.

Slipknot Album 8, Ministry's Last Show, Till Lindemann Tour
Show notes
Eloy Casagrande has finished recording drums for Slipknot's eighth album, his first with the band, and says the record grew out of hours-a-day jam sessions with Jim Root and Clown, with producer Matt Wallace in the room. He also reveals the divisive single "Arsenal" didn't come from those sessions at all. It started as a Corey Taylor vocal melody, and Jim Root has already confirmed it won't be on the album.
Also on this episode: Al Jourgensen reveals Ministry's final concert will take place October 30, 2027 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, one year to the day after the final album Hate To Go (Take Out Or Delivery), with Bill Burr flying him home by helicopter. And Till Lindemann announces the 33-date European and UK leg of his World Tour 2027, running from Riga to Prague as part of a run of more than 50 shows.

KISS Farewell Doc, Parkway Drive Film, Malevolent Creation
Show notes
KISS have announced End Of The Road, a documentary on the farewell tour, premiering November 19 on KissOnline.com for $14.99 before any other platform, promising to show "how the band plans to carry its legacy forward." Parkway Drive's Sydney Opera House film, Home, hits US theaters November 18 with a 20-track live album December 4. Scott Penfold on which one deserves your money, and why one is a concert film and the other is an onboarding video for the avatars.
Also today: Malevolent Creation fire bassist Jesse Jolly and guitarist Chris Cannella, Jolly calls the band "far too toxic," and Phil Fasciana responds by offering Cannella $1,000 to play one song without a mistake.

System Of A Down x4, Meshuggah + Testament, Disturbed 2027
Show notes
System Of A Down have added a fourth and final Rose Bowl show, June 12, 2027 with Gojira, after the first three sold out inside a week: four nights at a 90,000-seat stadium for a band with no album since 2005. Scott Penfold on why that's the best argument yet against System ever making another record, and what the counter-argument gets right.
Also today: Meshuggah's 40th-anniversary North American run, The Forty-Year Anomaly Tour, with Testament and Blood Incantation, on sale Friday, October 30, with Detroit's Masonic Temple (February 16) the first date out. And Disturbed take The Sickness to Australia, New Zealand and Asia for twelve arena shows in April and May 2027, a year after Dan Donegan said the band needed "quite a bit of time off."

AI Ozzy Won't Sell Phones, Crowbar Album, Dead Wyte Debut
Show notes
Jack Osbourne says the backlash to the family's AI Ozzy avatar "was my own fault," that people wrongly assumed "Ozzy Osbourne selling cell phones," and that building the "digital fingerprint" is about owning his father's IP the way Bob Marley's and Michael Jackson's estates do. Scott Penfold on why Jack is right about ownership and wrong about what people were actually reacting to, two days before Back To The Beginning hits theaters.
Also today: Kirk Windstein says Crowbar "start writing first of the year," with Down's Volume V, the first full Down album since 2007 (King Diamond included), due November 20. And Mudvayne's Greg Tribbett and his brother Tripp launch Dead Wyte with "Mother Trucker."

Blind Channel's Niko Moilanen On Painstream + Tori Kravitz
Show notes
Niko Moilanen of Blind Channel joins Scott Penfold two weeks before Painstream, the band's sixth album and the first with every vocal on him, after what the band called twenty months of deliberate silence. He talks about what the quiet was for, Joel Hokka leaving for a reason nobody can argue with, the song inspired by the Fermi Paradox and the 1977 Wow! signal, a track called Youthanasia (yes, like the Megadeth album), Scary Noise Records, the red middle fingers at Eurovision, and the one Helsinki show on November 14 that has to carry the whole comeback.
Then a special guest: Tori Kravitz, publicist at Atom Splitter PR and host of Knotfest's She's With The Band and Beyond The Breakdown, on what gets a pitch deleted instantly, what her guests say off the record, landing Alissa White-Gluz after years of asking, and going back to Warped Tour as the pit reporter.

Sonic Temple 2027, Fehn On Pawn Stars, Deafheaven Tour
Show notes
Sonic Temple 2027 is out: nearly 150 acts, May 13–16 in Columbus, with Iron Maiden (one of the last two Run For Your Lives shows), Korn, Blink-182 and Falling In Reverse on top and Alice In Chains, Faith No More, Meshuggah, Testament, Mastodon, Blood Incantation and Knocked Loose underneath. Scott Penfold on why a pop-punk Thursday headliner is the right call for the heaviest Sonic Temple yet.
Also today: former Slipknot percussionist Chris Fehn appears on Pawn Stars to authenticate his own long-nose mask ("It's too nice... I had three of them made and it just didn't fit right") and watches the shop offer $1,200 against a $15,000 ask. And Deafheaven and Interpol announce an eight-date March 2027 US tour, from New Orleans to Sayreville, NJ, presale October 28.

Sharon's Ozzy Secret, Godsmack New Music, Obituary Reissues
Show notes
Sharon Osbourne says Ozzy's doctors warned that Back To The Beginning "would kill him," that Ozzy answered "I know I'm dying... I want to go this way," and that she never told Black Sabbath or her own children how sick he was. Scott Penfold on why that was the right call, with the Back To The Beginning film in theaters October 28.
Also today: Sully Erna confirms new Godsmack music "at some point next year," three years after calling Lighting Up The Sky the band's last album, with Mike Mangini now on drums ("I'm under contract, and I owe another record anyways"). And Obituary reissue Xecutioner's Return and Darkest Day, remastered through Relapse, with a tribute to the late Frank Watkins and Ralph Santolla.

Nirvana Pass AC/DC, Alice Cooper No. 1, Metal Allegiance
Show notes
Nirvana's Nevermind has passed AC/DC's Back In Black to become the sixth best-selling album of all time, by one thousand copies: 66,832,000 equivalent album sales to 66,831,000, per Chartmasters. AC/DC still lead on physical copies, 37 million to 30 million. Scott Penfold on how the count works, why the streaming number is the honest one, and the fact that should bother everyone: nothing released since 1991 is in the all-time top ten.
Also today: Alice Cooper's memoir Devil On My Shoulder hits No. 1 on the UK Sunday Times list and No. 4 on the New York Times list, the same week Dave Mustaine's book is also in the Times top ten. And Metal Allegiance announce their January 28 NAMM-week show at the House Of Blues Anaheim with members of Opeth, Overkill, Mastodon, Queensrÿche and Armored Saint, plus David Ellefson and Marty Friedman; tickets on sale Thursday.

Slipknot Told Eloy Not To Be Joey, Crüe Vegas, Papa Roach
Show notes
Slipknot drummer Eloy Casagrande says Clown told him on day one, "you don't have to be concerned about playing everything right," that the band "don't want to have another Joey in the band," and that the Brazilian rhythms Clown once shut down are now going into the studio. Scott Penfold on why that's the most important thing anyone has said about the next Slipknot album.
Also today: Mötley Crüe announce "Carnival of Sins in Sin City," eight nights at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace from March 19 to April 3, 2027, with fan-voted setlists and presales starting today. And Papa Roach add a 30-date 2027 US leg to the Rise of the Roach tour, May 11 to June 27, with Ice Nine Kills and the breakout duo Ninth Key.

Sleep Token Statement, Manson Wembley Row, SOAD LA Tease
Show notes
Sleep Token have broken a year of silence with a rare statement saying they have "no affiliation with any outside musical project that invokes this name" and that such claims "are not made with our blessing." The band never names a target; fans are pointing at Arcus, a mystery project teased last month as being "from the co-creator of Sleep Token."
Also today: a Brent Council politician calls for Marilyn Manson to be removed from Slipknot's July 3, 2027 Wembley Stadium show, the council says it isn't their call, and Wembley says it is talking to Live Nation. Manson denies all wrongdoing; a civil trial is set for November 2027. And System Of A Down are projecting their logo across Los Angeles with a countdown running on their site, and the two-rose teaser has fans betting on the Rose Bowl.

Dave Lombardo: Lustmord, Shatner, Reign In Blood At 40
Show notes
Dave Lombardo joins Scott Penfold six days after The Pulse Of Atoms, his first album with dark-ambient pioneer Lustmord, and one day after Reign In Blood turned forty. He explains why he 'wasn't ready' to make the Lustmord record twenty years ago, why he turned down William Shatner's metal album before calling back to say yes, and what happened in the backstage cubicle at Download 2004 when Metallica needed a drummer with hours to spare.
Also: Reign In Blood at 40 ('if I go into cardiac arrest, play Angel Of Death'), what Mike Patton taught him, the Misfits call from an unknown number, and news on Dead Cross and Satanic Planet.

Heafy Nearly Quit Trivium, Arch Enemy Album, Mustaine Book
Show notes
Matt Heafy walked out of a Trivium recording session last year, called his wife and told her he was done with the band. He tells Metal Hammer what she said to send him back, why drummer Alex Bent left in October, and why Trivium are 'tighter live than we've ever been' ahead of Crown In The Grave on November 20. Scott on why the real headline is the one Heafy didn't say.
Also: Michael Amott says Arch Enemy are 'slowly working on a new album' with Lauren Hart, and why 'slowly' is the right word for a band that's replaced its singer twice before and won both times. And Dave Mustaine's memoir In My Darkest Hour debuts at number four on the New York Times list, in the same year Megadeth's final album went to number one. The Take: metal's honesty problem, and three men who passed the test.

Floor Jansen Leaves Nightwish, Hagar's Olive Branch, Harris Bonus
Show notes
Floor Jansen and Nightwish have parted ways after 14 years, 'in mutual agreement.' Tuomas Holopainen once said her leaving would be 'one hundred percent' the end of the band; instead Nightwish say they'll record a new album in 2027, and Floor's second solo album, Hytress, arrives January 15. Scott on three singers, three exits and one common factor.
Also: Sammy Hagar, 79 this week, tells Billboard he'd 'love to bury the hatchet with Alex' Van Halen, who called him 'a complete idiot' and hasn't spoken to him in 25 years. And Steve Harris books British Lion into the Cart & Horses, the 120-capacity East London pub where Iron Maiden played their first show, for six nights at Christmas. The Take: what a band is once the people change.

Ian Hill's No Choice, Dream Theater 17, Sharon On Megadeth Bonus
Show notes
Ian Hill explains why he left Judas Priest after 56 years: arthritis in his shoulder and thumb, six shows in eight days, a tendon that snapped in Brussels, and a decision he says he'd already made. 'I had no choice, really.' His bass is on the next Priest album, and he's open to encores if asked.
Also: Dream Theater post a studio photo and a hashtag, and album seventeen with Mike Portnoy is underway earlier than anyone said. And Sharon Osbourne finally explains why Megadeth weren't at Back To The Beginning: 'There was no time.' Scott's take: three endings, and the rule underneath all of them.

Hetfield's No-Politics Vow, Kelly Osbourne, Butcher Babies Bonus
Show notes
James Hetfield stopped Metallica's fourth Sphere show to tell the crowd what the band isn't: 'Metallica is not here, like some other entertainers, to influence you.' He didn't name names. He didn't need to. Scott takes a side on whether a band gets to decide what its stage is for.
Also: Kelly Osbourne says she wrote 'Please help me' on a candle at Ozzy's grave and the next day Sharon arrived with the therapist who turned things around, and Butcher Babies' Heidi Shepherd says the hardest part of Carla Harvey leaving was losing 'a best friend of twenty-something years'.

Also: audio of Black Sabbath's lost 1970 Dutch TV set, which the broadcaster said burned in a fire, has surfaced as The Lost 1970 Avro Sessions, and Metallica add 'Until It Sleeps' at their fourth Sphere show after 'Devil's Dance', 'The Outlaw Torn' and 'Fade To Black'.
