Homeschool Our Way - Homeschooling Programs, Black Moms, Black Families, Working Moms

Education, Education for Kids, Kids & Family

Have you considered homeschool because you feel like the traditional school system just isn’t meeting your family’s needs as a Black family? Are you worried about finding opportunities to connect with other families of color so that your kids have a safe space to socialize with their peers? Is it hard creating a homeschool schedule that balances your responsibilities as a working mom? Are you struggling to find the perfect curriculum that’s rich with cultural representation and meets your kids’ educational needs?

If any of that sounds familiar, I’m so glad to have you here! This podcast will empower you to take control of your children's education, help you create a personalized learning experience that uplifts and nurtures your children inside and out, and will help you maximize quality time and embrace this learning journey together as a family.

Hi, I’m Elan: a proud Spelman alumna, a wife and a working homeschool mom of 2. But before homeschooling became our way of life, I looked into every type of school imaginable for my girls. I simply couldn’t find a traditional learning environment that truly met their needs.

I tried small private schools, speciality charter schools, and I researched all the public schools near me that boasted the best test scores.

But I finally realized that if I wanted the personalized learning for my kids that would affirm them and allow them to dive deeper into their natural interests and passions, then I would have to take control of their education and completely reimagine what school could look like for my family.

So I decided to start homeschooling. I developed a simple framework that allowed me to create the learning environment my girls needed to thrive, while helping me balance my role as a working homeschool mom.

And now I’m sharing that framework with you!

So if you’re ready to take control and create a homeschool experience…
Tailored to your children's learning needs…
Connected with other homeschool families of color…
All while spending more quality time together as a family - then this is the podcast for you!

So pop in those earbuds and get ready to be educated and inspired by fellow Black moms who are reimagining education for their families and instilling a lifelong love of learning. Because if they can do it, I know you can too!

Let’s do homeschool our way.

  2. 134: Why Your Homeschool Plan Is Just the Starting Point

    Show notes

You spent weeks planning your homeschool this year: the schedule, the curriculum, the activities. But now that you're actually living it, some of it might not be going the way you imagined.

In this episode, I'm sharing why that's not a sign to scrap everything - you may just need some strategic adjustments along the way.

    Here's what we explore:

    • Why the first few weeks of a new semester are so important
    • How you can feel "busy" all week but accomplishing nothing, and the three shifts that will make all the difference
    • The one question you should be asking about your family’s weekly schedule that has nothing to do with your calendar

Homeschool Rhythm: Build a Flexible Structure That Fits Your Family's Real Life

If this episode has you thinking it's time to evaluate or tweak your family's weekly rhythm, Homeschool Rhythm can help you put those ideas into practice.

It’s my step-by-step mini course for building a flexible homeschool rhythm around your family's schedule, natural energy, commitments, and priorities.

  3. 133: Stop Guessing: Find Out What Grade Level Your Child Is REALLY On

    Show notes

In this episode, we’re talking about why age doesn't automatically tell you where your child is academically, and I’m walking you through the different types of assessments that can actually give you real answers.

If you're starting a new curriculum, starting homeschooling for the first time, or just want more clarity heading into this school year, this episode is for you.

    We explore:

    • The assessment option most families skip right past, even though it could save you wasted time and money
    • The test that "levels up" as your child gets answers right, and how it can expose academic gaps a normal test might miss
    • The real difference between an assessment that shows you where your child is starting from versus one that shows what they've already learned
    • Whether your state actually requires testing, and what to do if it doesn't

    RESOURCES MENTIONED:

    • Math-U-See: offers an assessment for their curriculum
    • Homeschool Boss: offers various adaptive assessments and end-of-year achievement tests
    • California Achievement Test (CAT): private end-of-year achievement test for homeschoolers

  4. 132: Yes, You CAN Teach Your Child to Read, with Melanie Jeffrey

    Show notes

Teaching your child to read can feel like a VERY intimidating undertaking, especially if you have no background in education.

So in this episode, I sit down with K-3 literacy teacher, Melanie Jeffrey, to talk about what really matters when it comes to reading instruction and why YOU are absolutely the woman for the job!

    We discuss:

    • Why phonics is a proven, reliable method for teaching kids to read.
    • Simple ways to work reading practice into everyday moments, without it feeling like "another lesson".
    • What to do when reading just isn’t “clicking” (spoiler: it isn't panicking! 😂).
    • The real age when children are ready to learn to read, and why comparing your child's timeline to others causes unnecessary worry.

If you've got a child approaching reading age, or you're already teaching your child to read and want more confidence in what you're doing, this is the perfect conversation for you to hear!

  6. 131: Ready for the School Year? Make Sure You Have These 3 Things

    Show notes

Every August, the same question shows up for homeschool moms, no matter how much prep work we've done: Are we actually ready for the school year to start?

In this episode, I'm breaking down what "ready" really means for homeschool family — and why it has almost nothing to do with how much you've checked off your list. If you're heading into the school year still second-guessing yourself, this one's for you.

    I walk you through:

    • Why even the most "on top of it" homeschool moms still second-guess themselves during back-to-school season
    • The simple filter that makes every homeschool decision this year easier
    • The overlooked step that determines whether your homeschool schedule actually holds up once real life hits
    • Why looking for the "best curriculum" is actually the wrong approach, and what to ask instead

    Show notes

If you've ever felt like the only education choices available to your family were traditional school or homeschool, this episode is going to open up a whole new world for you!

I'm joined by Jay Artis-Wright, Executive Director of Freedom to Choose Schools, for a conversation about what educational choice really looks like today and why understanding your options matters.

    We discuss:

    • The schooling model that's quietly booming across the country right now, and why it might be the missing piece between homeschooling and traditional school for your family.
    • What's really happening nationally with Black and Latino families and education choice, and why the numbers might surprise you.
    • The specific thing Jay says almost every parent has access to but never thinks to use when researching education options.

Whether your children have attended public, charter, private, microschool, homeschool, or something in between, one thing is true: parents have more educational options than ever before.

  20. 117: Why Finding Homeschool Community Feels So Hard (and what you can do TODAY to change that!)

    Show notes

Finding homeschool community can be hard for any family. But for Black families, the search carries extra weight because it's not just about socialization. It's about finding a space where your kids are celebrated, not tolerated.

In this episode, I'm getting honest about why that search feels so challenging for families of color, and I’m sharing five practical things you can do to find the community your family deserves.

    Here's what we explore:

    • The real reason finding homeschool community hits different for families of color — and why it makes complete sense that it feels so hard.
    • The surprisingly simple thing you can do before you even start homeschooling that could connect you with your people faster than you'd think.
    • Why saying yes too quickly to the wrong community might be costing you more than you realize.
    • What one mom's decision to listen to her child’s needs ultimately led to for her family.
