  2. 140 – Teen People, March 1998: Drew Barrymore's Adorable Wigging Out Cover Feature

    Episode 140

    Show notes

If you look up the word "adorable" in the dictionary, you'd probably see an illustration of the magazine we're covering in this episode! We're talking about Drew Barrymore's March 1998 Teen People cover feature, for the magazine's second ever issue. We’re diving into this cute-as-can-be photo shoot by frequent Drew collaborator Peggy Sirota, in which a bewigged DB gets silly and frolics with her dog Flossy.

In the article by Trish Deitch, Drew’s discussing her whirlwind schedule following Ever After, her thoughts on fame, her love for Beck, and some recently gleaned info on the then-status of her relationship with Luke Wilson. Plus, we’re revisiting her advocacy for the Female Health Foundation and Wildlife Waystation, including via a charity tee shirt for Planet Hollywood designed by illustrator Lane Smith. From the photo shoot's fun facts to some wonderfully nostalgic Drew history, there’s so much to unpack in this late-’90s time capsule!

  4. 138 – Jean Harlow: Drew Barrymore's Connections to the Iconic Star

    Episode 138

    Show notes

Decades before Drew Barrymore was given the title of “blonde bombshell”, another iconic star was associated with that moniker. This week we are joined by writer and historian Sophia D’Aurelio Adair to discuss the original Plantinum Blonde, Jean Harlow. We gush over the process of being researchers & collectors and go through a list of interesting parallels our favorite subjects share (like their Pisces star signs and unconventional relationships with their mom-managers). Plus we get into the Barrymore co-star connections, our suspected homage to Ms. Harlow in Batman Forever, and their shared responsibility for ruining the eyebrows of several generations of ladies. We hope you enjoy this fun episode about the woman Drew herself once called “a dynamic movie star and comedienne.”

    Episode 137

    Show notes

If there’s one thing that most Drewbies can agree on, it’s that 1995 was one of the peak Drew Barrymore eras! This week we’re taking you through an incredible magazine article from that year. The UK Premiere June 1995 cover feature was written by frequent Drew-collaborator Chris Heath and is jam packed with interesting tidbits (like which New Kids on the Block member she once kissed and her poem about love & poo). We’ll go backstage at a Hole show, get into shocking stories from Drew’s time in treatment, and learn new details about her divorce from Jeremy Thomas. Plus there are breadcrumbs about some projects that never came to be, like a Batman Forever Sugar action figure and another film with director Tamra Davis (co-starring a beloved SNL alum). Accompanied by truly iconic and colorful photos taken by David LaChapelle, this magazine feature is one not to be missed!

  11. 131 – Years in Review: 1990–1991, Teenage Drew Barrymore's Fight to Come Back in Hollywood

    Episode 131

    Show notes

A blonde '90s hair flip. Cigarette-in-hand red carpet appearances. A supposedly "washed-up" former child star working behind the counter of a coffee shop and living on her own at 15 years old.

It's time to dive into one of the most pivotal and often overlooked periods of Drew Barrymore's life. Between 1990 and 1991, a newly sober and newly emancipated teenage Drew was rebuilding from the ground up: attending AA meetings, releasing her bestselling memoir Little Girl Lost, taking odd jobs to pay the bills, and fighting to be taken seriously as an actress again.

Along the way, she collected a few tattoos, a couple boyfriends, a driver's license she may or may not have immediately lost, and roles in future cult classics like Poison Ivy and Guncrazy. Drew's big comeback was just around the corner! As she put it in 1991: "I just hope that I make the right choices and get to be an actress for the rest of my life."

  12. 130 – Guncrazy (1992): Drew Barrymore's Indie Crime Drama

    Episode 130

    Show notes

Just months after the release of 1992's Poison Ivy, Drew Barrymore’s comeback story took an even more powerful turn with her acclaimed, Golden Globe-nominated performance in Guncrazy. Determined to land the role of troubled outsider Anita, Drew fought hard for the part — ultimately channeling her own vulnerability, rebellion, and resilience into one of the rawest performances of her career.

With fearless direction from Tamra Davis and a fantastic supporting performance by James LeGros, the "lovers on the run" film became an underrated cult classic. Guncrazy was also proof that the then-16-year-old Drew Barrymore was capable of far more than Hollywood had given her credit for. We're getting into all of the nitty-gritty details of the movie, sharing many stories you've likely never heard before!

  18. 125 – Detour, February 1998: Drew Barrymore's Avant Garde Magazine Cover Feature

    Episode 125

    Show notes

This week we’re diving into a deliciously ’90s time capsule: Zev Borow’s 1998 Detour magazine profile of Drew Barrymore, complete with stunning photos by the one and only David LaChapelle. Written in France while 22-year-old Drew was filming Ever After, the piece captures her falling hard for Luke Wilson, teaming up with Adam Sandler for The Wedding Singer, and reflecting on her complicated family dynamics—all while being self-aware, giggly as ever, and determined to live “further.” Grab a glass, clink it properly (no half-ass “cheerzing”!), and join us as we revisit this unforgettable snapshot of our favorite flower child.
