Scott Fawcett: The Brutal Truth About Getting Better at Golf
Show notes
What if trying TOO HARD to get better at golf is actually stopping you from shooting lower scores?
You're practising, chasing a lower handicap, working on your golf swing... but are you actually getting better?
Scott Fawcett, creator of DECADE Golf and one of golf's leading course strategy experts, is back on How Low Can You Go? — and he's challenging the way we think about golf improvement.
In Part 2 of our conversation, Scott gets brutally honest with Dave and Chris about their pursuit of single figures and scratch golf, why golfers constantly move the goalposts, and how obsessing over lower scores can actually hold us back.
And there's plenty of practical advice on how to practise smarter, improve your driving and putting, and take your range game onto the golf course.
In this episode, we explore:
• Why chasing your golf handicap can become a trap — and why process beats outcome.
• How to practise putting more effectively and develop better distance control.
• Draw vs fade: why your driver fitting could be costing you accuracy and consistency.
• Why your best golf rounds never seem good enough.
• How to build a pre-shot routine that actually works under pressure.
• Why the mental game matters — but can't replace sound golf technique.
• How to stop overthinking your golf swing and play more freely.
• What Scott really thinks Dave and Chris should do to reach their golfing goals.Plus, Scott shares why even his own golf can feel frustrating, despite regularly shooting under par!
And could Scott Fawcett be coming to Scotland in 2027?

Stop Wasting Shots… And Stop Wasting Practice! | Scott Fawcett (DECADE Golf) - Part 1
Season 2, Episode 41
Show notes
What if the biggest thing stopping you from shooting lower golf scores isn't your swing — but the shots you're throwing away and the way you're practising?
This week on How Low Can You Go?, Dave and Chris welcome back one of the smartest minds in golf strategy — Scott Fawcett, creator of DECADE Golf.
Scott has helped some of the world's best players make smarter decisions on the golf course. Now, with the launch of his new DECADE Breaking 90 programme, he's bringing those same principles to everyday golfers looking to improve.
But this isn't just about breaking 90.
Whether you're trying to break 80, reach single figures or get down to scratch, Scott explains why shooting lower scores isn't always about hitting better shots — it's about eliminating mistakes, understanding what actually costs you strokes and practising the right things.
And Scott has some pretty strong opinions!
Are you wasting valuable practice time on the wrong parts of your game? Should you really be trying to hole every putt? And could your approach to driving actually be making your scores worse?
In Part 1 of this brilliant two-part conversation, Scott challenges some of golf's most deeply held beliefs and shares practical strategies that amateur golfers can start using immediately.
⛳ IN THIS EPISODE:
• Stop throwing away shots: The biggest course management mistakes costing amateur golfers strokes.
• Driver consistency: Why owning one predictable shot shape is so important for lower scores.
• Break 90, break 80 and beyond: How to eliminate penalty shots, three-putts and costly mistakes.
• Putting tips and green reading: Why hitting putts harder isn't always the answer — and Scott's brilliant clock drill.
• DECADE Golf strategy: Shot dispersion, smarter targets and why aiming at the flag can be a mistake.
• Strokes gained vs the Tiger Five: Why Scott questions popular golf statistics and what you should actually track.
• Practise smarter, not longer: How to allocate your limited practice time for maximum improvement.
• Chipping distance control: A simple drill to improve your consistency around the greens.Dave, still chasing that elusive single-figure handicap, asks why his driver performs so well on TrackMan but becomes increasingly unreliable out on the golf course.
Chris, meanwhile, is closing in on scratch after shooting some of the best rounds of his life. But is he actually spending his practice time on the things that matter most?
Scott doesn't hold back — and there's some absolute gold in this one.
If you're putting in the hours but not seeing the scores improve, this episode could completely change the way you approach your golf.

Dave Tried The Scoring Method. Then THIS Happened. | Will Robins (Part 2)
Season 2, Episode 40
Show notes
What if you could shoot lower golf scores, hit more greens and cut your handicap — without changing your golf swing? Dave tried Will Robins’ Scoring Method. And the results might surprise you.
After the incredible reaction to Part 1, Will Robins is back on How Low Can You Go? for the second half of a conversation that could fundamentally change the way you play golf.
Will is an award-winning PGA golf coach and creator of The Scoring Method, a revolutionary approach to golf improvement that focuses on one thing above everything else: shooting lower scores with the golf game you already have.
And in Part 2, things get seriously practical.
Why do golfers keep making doubles and triples when they could be making bogeys? Why do we obsess over improving our golf swings instead of learning how to score? And could smarter course management, better club selection and playing to your actual ability be the quickest route to breaking 90, breaking 80 or reaching scratch?
Will challenges Dave and Chris to rethink almost everything about how they approach the golf course.
In this episode, we explore:
• The Four Gears of Golf — how to choose the right shots for your ability, manage risk and avoid unnecessary mistakes.
• Confidence versus competence — why positive thinking isn’t enough, and how testing your skills can transform your performance under pressure.
• Play to your handicap — Will’s brilliant approach to tackling difficult holes and taking the pressure off your scorecard.
• Stop making doubles and triples — why eliminating disastrous holes can dramatically lower your golf scores.
• Better club selection and approach shots — why taking more club, aiming away from trouble and understanding your distances could help you hit more greens.
• Train hard, play easy — how to practise with purpose, build genuine golfing skills and take them onto the course.
• The truth about your short game — why so many golfers overestimate their ability inside 100 yards, and how to identify where shots are really being lost.
• Better golf without changing your swing — why smarter decisions and better scoring skills can deliver results that swing improvements alone might not.
• The mental game of golf — managing expectations, reducing tension and learning to enjoy your golf even when you’re desperate to shoot a good score. And there’s a very special update from Dave.
After recording with Will, Dave and Chris were generously given full access to The Scoring Method.
Dave wasted no time putting it into practice.
And after a couple of rounds getting to grips with the system, something rather exciting happened.
Ten greens in regulation in consecutive rounds. A round of 81. And a handicap cut from 13.6 to 13.1.
Could this finally be the breakthrough that gets Dave under 80?
Whether you’re a high-handicap golfer trying to break 100, a mid-handicapper desperate to break 90 or 80, or a low-handicapper chasing scratch, Will’s advice offers a completely different way to think about golf improvement.
Because golf isn’t about how good your swing looks. It’s about how many shots it takes to get the ball in the hole.

Stop Trying to Play Good Golf. Start Shooting Good Scores. | Will Robins' Scoring Method
Season 2, Episode 39
Show notes
What if the secret to shooting lower golf scores isn’t improving your swing — but completely changing the way you play golf?
Golf is a scoring game. So why do so many of us spend hours working on our swings, only to see the same disappointing numbers on our scorecards?
This week on How Low Can You Go?, Dave and Chris are joined by Will Robins, award-winning PGA golf coach and creator of The Scoring Method, a revolutionary approach to golf improvement that focuses on helping golfers shoot lower scores with the game they already have.
And Will has a remarkable story. After surviving the devastating 2004 Boxing Day tsunami in Thailand while on his honeymoon, his life and golfing career took an extraordinary turn.
In Part 1 of this fascinating two-part conversation, Will challenges almost everything we think we know about getting better at golf.
We explore:
• Why better golf swings don’t necessarily mean lower scores — and why so many golfers are working on the wrong things.
• The expectations trap — how frustration, pressure and tension can destroy your ability to perform.
• Train hard, play easy — why your practice sessions might actually be setting you up to fail on the course.
• Breaking 90, breaking 80 and breaking through scoring barriers — how to turn your existing ability into better results.
• The Four Gears of Golf — Will’s brilliant approach to course management, risk and playing to your ability.
• Stop making doubles and triples — why eliminating big numbers is often far more important than chasing birdies.Dave also reveals how applying Will’s advice several years ago helped him shoot 86 when he was struggling to break 90.
Whether you’re a high-handicap golfer desperate to break 100, a mid-handicapper chasing 80, or a low-handicapper trying to reach scratch, this conversation could fundamentally change the way you approach the game.
Because golf isn’t about how good your swing looks. It’s about how many shots it takes to get the ball in the hole.

Want to Play Golf Freely? Do This. | Dr Raymond Prior
Season 2, Episode 38
Show notes
Want to play golf freely when the score actually matters?
Dr Raymond Prior explains HOW to change the mental patterns that hold golfers back under pressure.
In Part 2 of our conversation with Dr Raymond Prior, author of Golf Beneath the Surface, we move from understanding the problem to doing something about it.
Last week was about Permission to Fail — why golfers struggle to play freely when they care deeply about the result.
This week, Raymond explains how to actually fix it.
What work can you do away from the golf course to change your relationship with failure, pressure and other people's opinions? Why isn't simply understanding your golf psychology enough? And what happens when your brain tries to drag you straight back into the same old patterns?
We also get into one of the biggest issues facing any golfer who is working hard to improve:
EXPECTATION.
Dave has been practising, taking lessons and seeing genuine signs of improvement — so why aren't the scores coming?
Raymond explains why expecting your hard work to produce better golf on your timetable can become a trap — and why the pursuit of improvement is very different from demanding a particular outcome.
Chris, meanwhile, gives a fascinating real-world example of what can happen when you stop protecting your score and start playing freely — including how that mindset helped him shoot 67 twice.
We also discuss:
• How to change your golf mindset and play with more freedom
• Dealing with fear of failure and performance anxiety in golf
• Why changing your mental game requires reps
• Expectations versus improvement
• Playing under pressure and entering a flow state
• Why golfers start protecting a good score
• Taking swing changes from the driving range to the golf course
• Block practice vs random practice
• Why making a swing change might mean accepting worse scores in the short termIf you've ever worked hard at your golf, expected to get better, and then wondered why you still can't produce it when it matters, this episode is for you.

Permission to Fail | Dr Raymond Prior on Playing Golf Freely
Season 2, Episode 37
Show notes
What if the secret to playing better golf is giving yourself permission to fail?
This week on How Low Can You Go?, performance psychologist and Golf Beneath the Surface author Dr Raymond Prior returns for a fascinating conversation about the mental game of golf, playing under pressure and why trying desperately to avoid mistakes can actually make them more likely.
Dave has improved this season. His handicap is coming down. He reached the semi-final of his club championship.
But the breakthrough he's been chasing still hasn't arrived.
And in that semi-final, something happened that every competitive golfer will recognise.
His opponent started to fall apart.
Instead of thinking, let's go and win this, Dave started thinking:
Just don't screw this up more than he does.
What followed wasn't pretty.
Raymond explains why our brains don't simply distinguish between "positive" and "negative" thoughts. Instead, he describes the battle between pursuit and avoidance — and why thoughts like don't hit it left, don't make double or don't mess this up can completely change the task we're giving our brain.
We get into:
• Why trying not to hit the bad golf shot can create a two-way miss
• Pursuit vs avoidance and what it means for golfers
• Why "just swing freely" is much harder than it sounds
• Playing under pressure in match play and team golf
• Why the best performers need to be willing to fail
• The relationship between stable confidence and failure
• Why caring about what other people think can affect your golf
• What it actually means to play golf freelyAnd eventually, Raymond turns the conversation back onto Dave.
After all the practice, lessons, coaching, podcast conversations and time invested in getting better at golf, has Dave created another problem?
Has his score started to feel like it needs to justify all of that investment?
And if it has… how do you fix it?
That's where we'll leave Part One.
Part Two coming next week.

Our Home Course Pro Knows Exactly What's Holding Us Back | Jonnie Cliff
Season 2, Episode 36
Show notes
What does a golf pro who has watched your game up close actually see that you don't?
This week on How Low Can You Go?, Dave and Chris sit down with Jonnie Cliff, Head Professional at Murrayfield Golf Club — our home course and the coach who probably knows our golf games better than anyone.
Jonnie has seen the good, the bad and the occasional absolute disaster, so we're putting him on the spot.
What are Chris's biggest blind spots? Can he really get to scratch? Can Dave finally get himself to single figures? And what separates the golfer who hits it beautifully on the range from the golfer who can actually take that game onto the course?
We get into clubface control, pressure, external focus, mental performance, practice and one of the biggest themes of the conversation:
How to make practice more like actual golf.
Jonnie explains why testing matters, how to gamify your practice, how random practice can improve your ability to deal with real golf situations, and how tracking your stats can uncover the small weaknesses that are holding your handicap back.
And there's plenty of honest HLCYG chat along the way — including Jonnie's diagnosis of both Dave and Chris's games.
If you're serious about getting better at golf, this one is packed with ideas you can take straight onto the range and to the golf course.
A big thanks to Jonnie Cliff, Advanced PGA Professional and Specialist Performance Psychology Coach at Murrayfield Golf Academy, for joining us.

Make Driver Your Best Friend, Score Lower, Play Better Golf | Michael Leonard (Part 2)
Season 2, Episode 35
Show notes
"Driver sets the stage for everything."
In Part 2 of our conversation with Michael Leonard of Wicked Smart Golf, we get into the stuff that can genuinely move the needle for club golfers — from speed and distance to strokes gained, practice, tempo, course management and the mental side of actually playing better golf.
Michael explains why you don’t need to keep changing your swing to improve, how tracking your stats can expose the weaknesses you don’t even realise you have, and why simply hitting more balls isn’t necessarily making you better.
We also get into:
• Why distance is scoring potential — and why more speed doesn’t necessarily mean less accuracy
• How Michael added around 5mph of clubhead speed and what speed training has done for his own game
• Why strength training can be the engine behind speed
• The importance of analysing trends rather than obsessing over individual rounds
• Why you should never analyse your stats during the round
• How to turn your data into much more focused practice
• Why golfers need to stop guiding the driver and start committing to their shot
• The surprisingly powerful role of tempo
• Why “slow and slow” might be terrible advice for many golfers
• How to use a simulator or TrackMan to practise the shots you actually need
• Why you shouldn’t abandon the golf course completely during winter
• The myth that hitting 3-wood automatically means hitting more fairways
• Why driver should potentially become your best friend rather than your biggest fearAnd Michael gives Dave some fairly clear marching orders for the winter…
This is a brilliant conversation for any golfer who wants to play better without getting trapped in the endless swing-fix cycle.
Part 1 of our conversation with Michael Leonard is also available now — go and listen to that first if you haven’t already.

Dave is losing a lot of golf balls.
And both are wondering how to find their way back.
Recorded in Chris's car immediately after their round at The Carrick, this is a very different kind of HLCYG episode — a completely honest debrief about where their games are at, what has gone wrong, and what they need to do next.
We get into:
The reality of struggling when you're already a good golfer — Chris has recently shot his best-ever round of 67, but now feels completely lost in his swing and is questioning what his fundamentals even are.
Why golf can change so quickly — how one great round can make you feel like you've cracked the game, only for things to unravel again a few rounds later.
The danger of having too much information in your head — Chris admits he's picked up so many ideas from the brilliant coaches and experts we've had on HLCYG that he's no longer sure what to focus on over the ball.
Dave's disappearing golf balls — despite working hard on his driver, Dave finds himself back in trouble off the tee and realises he needs a reliable “fairway finder” between driver and his mid irons.
Playing to your handicap rather than the par on the scorecard — why accepting that you have shots to work with can completely change your decision-making on the course.
Why bogey isn't always a bad score — and why amateurs shouldn't judge their golf against the standards set by professional golfers.
The quest to break 80 — Dave is chasing the milestone that he believes he needs to achieve if he's going to fulfil his ambition of becoming a single-figure golfer.
Chris's swing dilemma — after struggling with his draw, could a fade be the answer?
And then we get to Karl Morris.
Dave reveals how a conversation with Karl helped him go from shooting one of the worst front nines he'd played in years to shooting his best-ever competition round the very next day.
Karl's three words?
Intention. Attention. Attitude.
It's a brilliant example of the mental side of golf actually making a difference on the course — and it leads to a very obvious question:
What if we spent two full days with Karl Morris?
It's a brilliant example of the mental side of golf actually making a difference on the course — and a reminder that sometimes the biggest changes in our golf have nothing to do with our swing.

Rick Currin Reveals “Fig Jam” — The Secret to Breaking Through Scoring Barriers (Part 2)
Season 2, Episode 32
Show notes
Could "Fig Jam" change your mindset and help you shoot lower scores?
This week on How Low Can You Go?, Dave and Chris are joined by Rick Currin for part 2 of a fascinating conversation about practical golf improvement, breaking through scoring barriers, and why amateur golfers often make the game far harder than it needs to be.
Rick has a refreshingly simple approach: less is more.
And he has some fascinating ideas about how amateur golfers can lower their scores without obsessing over swing mechanics.
We get into:
🏌️ The “Fig Jam” method — Rick’s unconventional approach to removing pressure and changing your perception of what scores you’re capable of shooting.
🧠 Why scoring barriers are often psychological — and how changing what you believe you can shoot can help you actually shoot it.
🎯 The importance of knowing your numbers — why understanding your real carry distances could immediately help you make better decisions on the course.
↪️ Why Rick has gone back to the fade — and why chasing the draw may not be the answer for amateur golfers.
📊 The five laws of ball flight — speed, path, face angle, angle of attack and centredness of contact.
😮💨 How to deal with pressure when you’re playing well — including Rick’s brilliant “box breathe your way to freedom” approach.
⛳ The 6-6-6 strategy — how Rick approaches the first six, middle six and final six holes differently to build a better score.
😂 Why amateur golfers are actually soldiers — dealing with bad lies, inconsistent greens and all the other chaos that comes with playing everyday golf.
And Rick makes a pretty bold prediction: he’s confident he can help Chris get to scratch and Dave get into single figures.
So... the challenge is officially on.

“Boring Golf Is Fun Golf” — Rick Currin’s Blueprint for Shooting Lower Scores
Season 2, Episode 31
Show notes
WHAT IF THE FASTEST WAY TO LOWER YOUR GOLF SCORES ISN’T FIXING YOUR SWING — BUT SIMPLY PLAYING SMARTER GOLF?
Golf coach Rick Currin believes most amateur golfers make it far more difficult than it needs to be.
And if you’re trying to break 100, break 90, break 80, lower your golf handicap or become a single-figure golfer, Rick believes there are much simpler ways to improve your golf than constantly searching for the next swing fix.
In this episode of How Low Can You Go?, Rick joins Chris and Dave to share his practical approach to golf improvement, course management, short game, wedge play, golf strategy and scoring — and explains why playing what he calls “boring golf” could actually be the secret to shooting your lowest scores.

🎙️ BACK TO THIS WEEK’S EPISODE…
Based in Malaysia, Rick Currin has spent decades playing and coaching golf, developing a simple philosophy for helping amateur golfers lower their handicap and shoot better scores:
Play chess, not checkers.
Rick believes too many golfers overcomplicate the game — chasing golf swing changes, automatically hitting driver and neglecting the short game and course management skills that can actually save shots.
In this episode, we discuss:
• Why short game could be the fastest route to lower scores — and why Rick wants golfers spending far more time practising pitching, chipping, putting and those awkward 40–70 metre wedge shots.
• How to eliminate double and triple bogeys — and why avoiding big numbers could be the key to breaking 100, 90 or 80 and lowering your golf handicap.
• Should amateur golfers really hit driver everywhere? Rick challenges one of the biggest debates in modern golf strategy and explains why he might hit driver just FOUR times during a competitive round.
• Why “boring golf” can be great golf. Fairways, greens, smart targets and better decisions — Rick explains why good course management doesn't need to be complicated.
• The half-swing that could transform your approach play. Rick explains his controlled 9-to-3 wedge and iron swing and why learning your favourite yardages can make golf much simpler.
• Rick’s 6-6-6 golf strategy: six holes to warm up, six holes to attack and six holes to respond — a simple approach to course management designed to help you avoid blow-up rounds and shoot lower scores.
• Why knowing your score can get in the way of your best golf. Rick reveals how he broke 70 for the first time without knowing his score coming down the stretch and explains the importance of playing one shot at a time.
• Why endless YouTube golf tips could be holding you back. Instead of constantly searching for another golf swing fix, Rick wants golfers to understand their own swing and work with a golf coach who understands their game.
• How to improve your bunker play and short game, including Rick’s Gary Player-inspired “speed and trust” bunker technique and why experimenting with different clubs from the sand could improve your distance control.
Whether you’re trying to break 100, break 90, break 80, reach a single-figure handicap or get closer to scratch, Rick’s message is simple:
Better golf isn't always about building a better golf swing. Sometimes it's about better short-game practice, smarter course management, fewer double bogeys and knowing when NOT to hit driver.
If you’ve ever walked off the 18th green thinking:
“I actually hit the ball pretty well today… so how did I shoot THAT?”
This episode is for you.

The Golf Lesson You Probably DON'T Want to Hear | Jim Waldron (Part 2)
Season 2, Episode 30
Show notes
AN ANCIENT RITE OF PASSAGE… APPLIED TO GOLF. YES, REALLY. JIM WALDRON EXPLAINS.
Welcome back to How Low Can You Go?
This is Part Two of our conversation with Jim Waldron — and this one gets even more interesting.
We're talking about why you probably shouldn't be looking at the golf ball when you hit it, why trying to control your release can actually make it worse, balance, the Bobby Jones drill… and how to deal with the fear of bad outcomes.
And then Jim wants to send Chris and I on an ancient rite of passage… applied to golf, obviously.
There’s some brilliant stuff in this one — and, as ever with Jim, quite a few things that made us stop and think:
“Hang on… is that actually right?”
Jim takes us into some fascinating territory around fear, awareness, attention, instinctive golf and what really gets in the way of performing on the course.
If you've ever stood over a shot thinking “don't hit it left”, “don't chunk this” or “whatever you do, don't three-putt”, this conversation could make you look at those moments very differently.

Karl Morris | The Three Words That Could Transform Your Golf Game (+ How Ryan Fox Won The Open)
Season 2, Episode 28
Show notes
Ryan Fox has just become Champion Golfer of the Year.
Just days after his Open Championship victory, Ryan Fox’s long-time performance coach, Karl Morris, joins How Low Can You Go? to unpack the mental skills that helped produce one of golf’s biggest victories.
For decades, Karl has worked with major champions, Ryder Cup players and Tour winners. In this episode, he shares the simple mental framework that helped Ryan perform under the greatest pressure in the game—and explains how every club golfer can apply those same principles to play better golf.
The conversation centres around three simple words Karl believes can transform your golf:
✅ Intention
✅ Attention
✅ AttitudeAlong the way, we discuss:
• How Ryan Fox dealt with the brutal bunker break on the 15th hole at The Open—and why acceptance was the key to recovering and ultimately becoming Champion Golfer of the Year.
• Why so many golfers are trapped playing “avoidance golf” instead of pursuing great golf.
• The simple mental shift that could lower your scores without changing your swing.
• How to access your best golf under pressure.
• Why chasing good shots is far more effective than trying to avoid bad ones.
• The attention techniques elite golfers use to perform when it matters most.
• How to build stable confidence that lasts beyond one good round.
Whether you’re trying to break 100, 90, 80 or simply become a more content golfer, this conversation is packed with practical ideas you can take straight to the golf course.
If you’ve ever struggled to transfer your range game onto the golf course—or wondered what separates Tour winners from everyone else—this is an episode you won’t want to miss.
In this episode: Ryan Fox, The Open Championship, Champion Golfer of the Year, Karl Morris, golf psychology, golf mental game, golf mindset, performance coaching, The Mind Caddy, intention, attention, attitude, acceptance, avoidance golf, golf confidence, lower scores, course management, golf improvement, performance psychology, golf podcast.

The Fastest Way to Lower Your Scores | Mark Immelman (Part 1)
Season 2, Episode 26
Show notes
“Golf isn’t a game of perfect… it’s a game of recovery.”
That simple idea sits at the heart of this conversation with Mark Immelman—one of golf’s great communicators, CBS Sports commentator and host of the acclaimed On the Mark podcast.
In Part One of this special two-part series, Mark challenges some of the biggest assumptions amateur golfers make about improving. We talk about why so many players become obsessed with technique, the idea of ‘Shot Number Three’, why the best coaches see golf as an orchestra rather than a collection of individual parts, and how accepting imperfection might just transform the way you play.
The conversation then takes an unexpected turn into flow state, the emotional pull of great golf courses and why, at its very best, golf can become something that reaches far beyond scorecards and swing positions.
Whether you’re trying to break 100, 90 or 80, this is an episode that will change the way you think about the game.
In this episode:
• Why golf is a game of recovery, not perfection
• Mark’s brilliant concept of ‘Shot Number Three’
• The orchestra analogy that every golfer should hear
• Putting, perspective and playing with freedom
• Flow state and finding your best golf
• Why the greatest golf courses can move us emotionallyNext week in Part Two…
Mark turns philosophy into practice.
He maps out exactly how Dave can become a better golfer, shares stories from Sir Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus, explains why carry distances matter so much, and reveals the habits that separate good golfers from great ones.
We’ll also take you behind the scenes from Scottish Open week, where what began as a podcast interview turned into an unforgettable day playing golf together in Gullane and North Berwick.
