How to Remove Silicone Caulk, Why Your Multi-Tool Overheats & Which Tool Brand to Buy | SideQuest 47 Bonus
Episode 47
Show notes
It's our November Q&A! You asked, we answered, and this month's questions came straight from your comments.
• How to remove silicone caulk: why it's mostly elbow grease, how to tell when the clear stuff is really gone, and why new caulk WILL fail if you leave any behind
• Which multi-tool blade cuts drywall (spoiler: your trash blade is perfect), and when you don't need a multi-tool at all
• Why your multi-tool blade gets so hot, and the "let the blade kiss the material" trick that fixes it
• DeWalt vs. Milwaukee vs. Ryobi vs. Makita: how to pick your battery platform, why corded tools free you to shop by reviews, and the one thing you should NEVER buy on Amazon
Want your question answered next month? Email us at hello@howtohandymaam.com, or tell us what theme you'd want for a future Q&A (paint? woodworking?).

Ghost Flushing, Knocking Pipes & Other 3 AM Scares | Ep 48
Show notes
It's 3 AM. The toilet flushes, but nobody's in the bathroom. The pipes start knocking, the lights flicker, and the bedroom door creaks open. Before you call a priest, call a handyma'am! Your house probably isn't possessed. It's just being dramatic.
In this Halloween episode, we play Ghostbusters and rate the spookiest things your house does on our official Scare-O-Meter (1 to 5 ghosts), then explain what's really going on and how to make it stop:
• Ghost flushing: why your toilet flushes itself, and the cheap part that's usually to blame
• Knocking in the walls: water hammer, loose pipes, and when to call a plumber
• Doors opening on their own: plumb door frames, crooked hinges, and air pressure
• Flickering lights: old dimmers and LED bulbs, and when it's your panel (and why you shouldn't go behind the dead front!)
• A general feeling of dread: the scariest one, and why every home needs a CO detector
Plus, in Three Minutes of Chaos, we each pitch the podcast we'd make if we weren't doing this one. You also get a brand-new segment, Handy Vocab, so you're never lost on the lingo.
This episode is dedicated to Amanda, our sparkly, treat-sharing, endlessly encouraging friend. We love you!

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist: 10 Things to Do Before It Gets Cold | Episode 47
Episode 47
Show notes
Cold weather is coming, and so are the drafts, mice, and frozen pipes. In this episode, Emily, Samantha, and Arly walk through the most common places cold air and critters sneak into your house, plus simple, beginner-friendly fixes you can tackle now, before it’s freezing outside.
In this episode:
• Weatherstripping: how to find drafts with the daylight trick and replace worn seals (it’s easier than you think)
• Outdoor spigots: shutting off and draining them so your pipes don’t burst, plus faucet covers if you don’t have an inside shutoff
• Why you should never leave your hose out all winter
• Pest-proofing: finding quarter-sized gaps, checking your sill plate, and Emily’s skunk-in-the-HVAC saga
• Cleaning your dryer vent before it gets cold (and why a clogged one lets cold air in)
• Gutters and downspouts: why clogged gutters split in winter, and our take on gutter guards
• Icicles and what melting snow on your roof says about your attic insulation
• Checking flashing and shingles before freeze-thaw season
• Reversing your ceiling fan for winter
• Bleeding radiators and checking your furnace filter
• Insulating exposed pipes with pipe foam or heat tape
• Chimney and fireplace checks, even if you never use itPlus: our most unpopular opinions (chicken, coffee, and peas are all under attack), and this episode is dedicated to Angel, the kindest plant mom we know. 🌿

Contractors Explain “Haunted House” Reddit Stories (Water Hammer, Drafts & More) | SideQuest 45
Show notes
Is your house haunted, or is something just broken? For spooky season, Emily, Samantha, and Arly turn paranormal investigators. We read real “haunted house” stories from Reddit, try to guess what was really going on, and reveal the surprisingly logical explanations. (Arly’s “science whimsy” has a few ghost raccoon theories of its own.)
In this episode:
• The “DJ ghost”: banging windows and doors that open on their own, explained by air pressure imbalance and loose hardware
• Galloping hooves in the hallway: what water hammer is and why it gets worse at night
• Writing that appears and disappears on cabinets, plus the “cold hand” on your neck: humidity, bleed-through, and cold air washing down walls
• Voices, laughter, and breath in an old mortuary: animals in the walls, pareidolia, and an elevator shaft acting like a chimney
• Bonus mystery: the Christmas decoration saboteur
• Our own “someone’s in the house” stories, and why houses make so many noises at night👻 Got a spooky story with a construction twist? Send it to us at hello@howtohandymaam.com

Speak Contractor: What Your Estimate REALLY Means (and When to Walk Away) | Ep 46
Show notes
Hiring a contractor? Learn to speak their language before you sign anything. In this episode, Emily, Samantha, and Arly, three licensed contractors who run a full-time construction company, pull back the curtain on the terms that cause the most confusion (and heartache) between homeowners and contractors. We cover what should be on your estimate, how deposits and payments should work, and the red flags that mean it’s time to find someone else.
In this episode:
• Scope of work: why “renovate the bathroom” isn’t enough, and how to get everything in writing
• Change orders: why they’re not a dirty word and actually protect you
• Estimate vs. bid vs. quote: what they mean, and the question to ask every contractor
• Fixed price vs. hourly vs. time and materials (T&M)
• Materials markup: why it doesn’t automatically mean your contractor is a crook
• Allowances: how they help you budget, and how they can mislead you (especially on new builds)
• Rough-in, framing, and inspection stages, from decks to whole houses
• Punch lists, the “live in it for two weeks” rule, and why you should hold back your final 10%
• Deposits: what’s normal, what’s not, and why you should NEVER pay 100% up front
• Draw schedules vs. progress payments, and tying payments to real milestones
• Why you should always pay in a trackable wayPlus: our most irrational fears for spooky season (leftovers, basement stairs, and a rabbit who doesn’t know he can jump), and why this episode is dedicated to the legend Dolly Parton. 💜

Can You Paint Latex Over Oil-Based Paint? Track Saw Kickback & Saw Safety Q&A | SideQuest 44
Show notes
Can you paint latex over oil-based trim? What happens when a track saw kicks back? Why does your wall scanner say there’s live electrical when there isn’t? In SideQuest 44, our October listener Q&A, Emily, Samantha, and Arly answer your DIY and power tool safety questions (while all three of us are sick, so bear with us).
In this episode:
• Circular saw safety: why you never mess with the blade guard, keep your fingers clear, and skip gloves with spinning tools
• How to prep oil-based painted trim for latex paint: sanding, liquid sandpaper, and shellac-based primer
• Why paint peels off doors and trim (hint: it’s almost always prep)
• What a track saw is, why it’s one of the safest circular saws, and what happens when it kicks back
• Track saw vs. table saw for beginners and small shops
• How to use a sacrificial board and set blade depth so you don’t cut into your table
• What causes binding and kickback when cutting plywood

Show notes
Welcome to a very special episode of How to Handyma’am—our FIRST EVER live podcast recording! 🎙️✨
We sat down in front of a room full of incredible women at our full-day hands-on DIY workshop to debrief the magic, tears, and toilet-on-wheels engineering of the event before diving into a rapid-fire Q&A session.

• 🚿 Plumbing & Access Panels: Why you should do a "flush test" and why you should never drywall over your shower valves.
• 📋 Codes, Permits & Red Flags: Why contractors must pull their own permits, using AI for code questions, and the truth about lead paint & asbestos.

--------------------------------------------------
• 🌻 Arly’s Porch Garden vs. Squirrel Heists: How local squirrels managed to haul off giant 8-inch sunflower heads right off the sidewalk.
• 🪵 Table Saw Kickback & Childhood Myths: Samantha shares a recent table saw kickback story—why a 2x4 push stick saved her hands—and reframes a childhood fear about bandsaws vs. table saws.
• 🛠️ Q&A: Pivoting into Trades Later in Life:
• How Samantha switched careers at age 44 after 26 years in the professional world.
• The "pursuer of joy" mindset and overcoming the fear of starting over.
• Practical advice for women wanting to break into home improvement (painting, Habitat for Humanity, Home Builders Associations).

• 🎨 Q&A: The Truth About Chipping Cabinet Paint & Contractor "Kickbacks":
• Debunking the myth that contractors get kickbacks from paint brands.
• Why Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane and Benjamin Moore Advance are both great—and why CHIPPING is a 100% preparation failure, not a paint failure.
• The ultimate 6-step cabinet prep process (degreasing, washing, mechanical sanding, dust removal, chemical etching, and shellac primer).
• Budget paint tips: Why you should never use flat paint on walls, buying un-tinted paint during 30–40% off sales, and Dutch Boy containers.

The 6-Day Kitchen Renovation: From Demo to Functional (Without Losing Your Mind) | Ep 41
Episode 41
Show notes
Can you turn a completely gutted kitchen into a fully functioning cooking space in just six days? In this episode, Samantha, Arly, and Emily break down the exact 3-phase framework used to renovate Samantha's daughter Hannah’s kitchen on a realistic budget and timeline.
HGTV makes kitchen remodels look like magic, but real-life renovations require strategy, realistic scheduling, and knowing how to handle unexpected chaos. Whether you're working with $3,000 or $10,000, learn how to navigate demo day without ruining your plumbing, install cabinets like a pro, and avoid burning through your budget.
What we cover in this episode:
•
The 3-Phase Kitchen Framework: Why separating "functional" from "pretty finishes" saves your sanity.
•
Cardboard Box Layouts: How simple planning beats expensive designer software.
•
Cabinet & Countertop Secrets: Why MDF is a hard no, how RTA (Ready-To-Assemble) cabinets save thousands, and why saw blade tooth count matters for butcher block vs. laminate.
•
Pro Installation Tricks: Using laser levels, support ledges, face-frame clamping, and pre-drilling to get seamless professional results.
•
Contracting "The Dumb": Recognizing physical burn-out on job sites and knowing when to walk away for the night.
Special shoutout to our August intensive attendee, Sandy from Florida!

Why Medieval Houses Were Made of POOP (vs. Modern DIY) | SideQuest 39 Bonus
Episode 39
Show notes
The chickens have left the coop! 🐔 In this unusually chaotic SideQuest, Samantha, Emily, and Arly hop into a time machine to look at how medieval peasant houses were built compared to modern homes. From timber framing with puzzle-piece wooden pegs to walls literally made of animal poop (wattle and daub!), thatched roof fire hazards, and candles made of bacon grease—thank goodness for modern drywall and indoor plumbing!
In this episode:
• 🪵 Timber framing: Mortise & tenon joints vs. modern fasteners
• 💩 Wattle & Daub: Why drywall mud is a massive upgrade over medieval walls
• 🌾 Thatched Roofs: How they shed water (and why they constantly caught fire)
• 💅 Iron Nails: Why medieval peasants sifted through ashes to find them
• 🚽 Castle Garderobes vs. Chamber Pots: The stinky history of toilets
• 🕯️ Rush Lights: Lighting your house with fat that smells like bacon
Subscribe for more low-jargon DIY advice, tool breakdowns, and chaotic home improvement history!
