Idling In The Impala | a ride through SPN fandom and fanfiction

Supernatural fanfiction can make intimate dialogue part of the story. In this Canon Fodder episode, Sandra and Kasey talk dirty! The Dirty Talk trope is pretty much ingrained in spicy stories. But how do writers approach it? What types of talk are out there (from praise to possessiveness, dominating to "Daddy")? What makes it work for characters (especially Sam and Dean Winchester), and how does fandom give authors room and safety to explore? A conversational look at fanfiction craft, fandom, and the choices behind a memorable and steamy scene. Grab your fans! It's getting hot in here!

The doc with all the details and fic recs can be found here.

Sandra and Kasey sit down with deadlybride, a Wincest fanfic author whose 260+ AO3 works span over a decade of Supernatural fandom devotion. Discover what draws writers back to Dean and Sam Winchester, explore fanfic recommendations from the conversation, and hear how one author's "write slowly, then all at once" ethos has shaped her legacy in the fanfiction community.

Here was that old wincest rec tumblr that I followed back when I was first getting into the fandom: https://wincestreading.tumblr.com/masterpost. Organized by trope, with fics mostly of the pre-2012ish period, so some may not have made the leap to AO3. Worth going through!

We’re welcoming back Fede (known as Tsukiyo-7 on tumblr) to the podcast. One of Sam Winchester’s famous phrases, “According to the Lore,” more than likely puts Fede on high alert every time they hear him utter it. Supernatural borrows from religions, cultures, mythology, and languages to build a world that leaves many in the know scratching their collective heads. Fede is one of those people and is here to deep dive into a ton of topics.

Get ready to be schooled by one of our favorite fandom friends. There was so much to get to; this is only Part 1 of our discussion.

If you want to dive into Fede’s notes and references, here is the doc.

Audio Note/Warning: Upon editing this episode, Sandra came across a background noise in Kasey’s track. Unfortunately, she couldn’t remove it.

Sandra and Kasey don't just report on Supernatural fanfiction, they live it. In this behind-the-writing episode, both hosts break down their own fanfic journeys, sharing what they've created over the past 18 months, where their muses go silent, and how they navigate the gap between loving fandom and actively contributing to it. Expect candid writer talk, unexpected creative struggles, and the story setup for part two (because yes, they ran long again). Perfect for fanfic writers looking for inspiration and real talk about the craft.

We've got a full backseat in the Impala today. Jackie (jinkieswouldyoulookatthis) has hitched a few rides with Sandra and Kasey before. Today, she’s brought her co-hosts from The Epic Love Story of Sam and Dean podcast. Owen (Oh-whenyouloveit), Teacup (TeacupUnicorn), and Jackie discuss and rewatch Supernatural through Wincest colored glasses on their podcast. Regardless of whether a watcher of the show ships or doesn’t, even canon has opinions:

"You know Sam and Dean Winchester are psychotically, irrationally, erotically codependent on each other, right?" ~Zachariah, Point of No Return, 5x18

Buckle up, because two podcasts collide today to provide some prime examples of just how unhinged Sam and Dean are about each other.

Find out more about TELSOSAD here.

If you read darkfic, you've likely encountered AO3's Dead Dove: Do Not Eat tag; a warning label with as many interpretations as there are fics tagged with it. Sandra and Kasey explore how Supernatural fanfiction writers use this tag to navigate fandom safety, discuss why fans tag so inconsistently, and share their favorite (and most surprising) Dead Dove fic recommendations. A discussion for fanfic readers seeking deeper insights into fandom tagging culture.

Content Warning: This episode discusses self-harm, sexual assault, and dark fics in general. If you might be triggered by any of these topics, please skip and join Sandra and Kasey next time.
