It's another week of Bollywood chaos, and Asim and Sujoy are joined by returning guest Parth for Episode 321 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast.
We kick things off with Ramayana and its increasingly confusing marketing campaign. Who exactly is this film trying to appeal to, and can it possibly live up to the expectations surrounding it?
Then we're off to Street Fighter, where Vidyut Jammwal's casting as Dhalsim gets us talking about his career, before Sujoy takes us through Jailer 2, Rajinikanth's unstoppable aura and the joys of completely ridiculous action cinema.
Parth reviews Hunkkaar and Udta Teer, which somehow leads us into Bollywood's obsession with Pakistan, disastrous promotional campaigns and Asim explaining one of the most bizarre films ever made in Pakistani cinema.
We also catch up on Koffee with Karan, including Salman Khan and Karisma Kapoor's reunion, Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda, and whether Shah Rukh Khan might finally return to Karan's couch.
And because apparently we hadn't suffered enough, we finish with Manoj Bajpayee's Gajab Raat.
Expect the usual Khandaan mix of questionable opinions, Bollywood gossip, unnecessary tangents and a surprising amount of discussion about mangoes.
In this episode:
•
Ramayana: Can the marketing live up to the hype?
•
Vidyut Jammwal, Street Fighter and Jailer 2
•
Hunkkaar and Udta Teer
•
Salman Khan, SRK and Koffee with Karan
•
Gajab Raat and the state of Bollywood thrillers

Madhuri Dixit or Sridevi? We put two favourites through seven categories and somehow make ourselves choose.
Asim, Amrita and Sujoy compare dance performances, acting range, box office power, fashion, chemistry with co-stars, comebacks and lasting influence. Sujoy admits his Madhuri bias early. Amrita makes the case for Sridevi. Asim discovers that choosing the categories hasn’t made choosing a winner any easier.
From Mr. India and Chandni to Beta, Devdas and English Vinglish, we revisit the performances that shaped our love of Hindi cinema.
This week’s topics:
• Madhuri’s precision or Sridevi’s storytelling through dance?
• Who could carry a film on her name alone?
• What made English Vinglish such a remarkable comeback?
• Who wins on style and chemistry with co-stars?
• Whose influence will the next generation carry forward? We discuss scenes and character moments from films across both careers.

Show notes
Support Khandaan and watch our full video episodes at Patreon.com/KhandaanPodcast.
Three films arrived in the same week, so Asim, Amrita and Sujoy have plenty to discuss.
Sujoy thinks Kunal Khemu’s Vibe is one of Bollywood’s best films of the year. Amrita appreciates Khemu’s distinct comic voice but wonders whether the movie occasionally feels like a showcase for its writer, director, producer and star.
Asim reviews Netflix’s Lust Stories 3 and asks why four acclaimed filmmakers have delivered an anthology that feels so strangely uniform.
The main review is Best of the Best, a South Asian college dance comedy starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. The hosts discuss girlhood, female friendship, colourism, diaspora identity, cultural gatekeeping and the importance of joyful South Asian stories. Sujoy, meanwhile, remains unconvinced by the film’s dancing, college rivalries and Hasan Minhaj.
Also: Preity Zinta, Bollywood music rights, Kunal Khemu versus the YRF Spy Universe and Asim inventing yet another Indian celebrity.

English Babu Desi Mem: SRK’s Triple-Role Disaster | Khandaan Podcast
Show notes

We revisit English Babu Desi Mem, the 1996 Shah Rukh Khan film that gives us three SRKs and somehow still leaves us wanting less.Sujoy chose English Babu Desi Mem. Amrita would like to know why.
In this episode of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast, Asim, Amrita and Sujoy revisit one of the strangest films in Shah Rukh Khan’s 1990s filmography. Loosely remade from the Clark Gable and Sophia Loren film It Started in Naples, it features Shah Rukh in a triple role, Sonali Bendre as a cabaret dancer raising his nephew and a plot that appears to abandon logic almost immediately.
We discuss Shah Rukh’s wigs, accents and aggressively broad performance, Sonali Bendre’s place in 1990s Bollywood, the film’s peculiar ideas about British Indians, Sujoy’s enduring love for the soundtrack and whether the voiceovers, flashbacks and abrupt ending suggest that the production simply ran out of money.
Is this really one of Shah Rukh Khan’s worst films? And more importantly, should Sujoy ever be allowed to choose the movie again?

Toxic vs Cocktail 2: Yash, Shahid & the Female Gaze
Show notes

Asim, Amrita and Sujoy are finally back together for Episode 317, with two very different movies on the agenda: Yash and Geetu Mohandas’ Toxic, and Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna in Cocktail 2.
Toxic leads us into a surprisingly complicated conversation about masculinity, the female gaze, sex, violence and whether Geetu Mohandas has actually smuggled something interesting into a giant Yash mass movie... or whether Asim and Amrita are giving the film far more credit than Sujoy thinks it deserves.
Then there’s Cocktail 2: part relationship drama, part Judaai, part Reddit AITA post. We discuss Shahid Kapoor’s increasingly intense screen persona, Kriti and Rashmika, the original Cocktail, and how Bollywood romance somehow went from grand declarations of love to “tu meri phati hui T-shirt hai.”
Plus, Asim recommends Babitha Singh Reporting, Amrita brings us Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, and your listener questions take us into Bollywood’s sequel obsession, David Dhawan’s retirement, Varun Dhawan’s career, whether the Khans will ever play grandfathers, and what happened to the stars who emerged in the 2000s.
And we end with a wonderful email from longtime listener Pragati, who has been with Khandaan since the Irrfan and Rishi Kapoor episodes and, most importantly, would like slow motion to finally retire.

Awarapan 2, Batwara 1947 & Has Bollywood Forgotten How to Make Movies?

Asim and Sujoy catch up on the latest releases, starting with Awarapan 2 and the enduring appeal of Emraan Hashmi before turning to Rajkumar Santoshi's Batwara 1947 and its surprisingly nuanced take on Partition.
Then they attempt to survive David Dhawan's Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, which raises the bigger question of whether Bollywood has forgotten how to make mainstream comedy. Plus: Varun Dhawan's identity crisis, Asim's inexplicable rage at Manish Paul, and why Maa Vaapas Aunga turned out to be one of the most moving films Asim has seen recently.

https://www.patreon.com/khandaanpodcastThis week Asim, Amrita and Sujoy had originally planned to review English Babu Desi Mem... but life (and perhaps self-preservation) got in the way.
Instead, they dive into one of the busiest weeks in film fandom.
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey continues to dominate conversation, but should adaptations stay faithful to the source? The team discusses translator Emily Wilson's criticism and why myths are meant to evolve.
Then it's time for the biggest Bollywood trailer of the year: Namit Malhotra's Ramayana. Is Ranbir Kapoor convincing as Ram? Does Yash's Ravana have enough complexity? And can a film rooted in Indian mythology truly connect with a global audience?
They also react to Sunny Deol's Batwara 1947, discussing Partition cinema, changing political narratives and whether Rajkumar Santoshi can still deliver.

Then it’s on to Maa Behen, Suresh Triveni’s sharp, funny, and surprisingly moving Netflix film starring Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri, and Dharna. The Khandaan gang unpack its commentary on patriarchy, gossip, beauty, motherhood, and survival, while also celebrating one of Madhuri’s most interesting performances in years.

Show notes
🎧 Support us on Patreon → [https://www.patreon.com/khandaanpodcast] Before she became a global star, Priyanka Chopra was already one of Bollywood's most entertaining personalities. This week, Asim, Amrita and Sujoy revisit some of Priyanka's most viral moments: the infamous "SRK jacket", the legendary Kareena Kapoor comeback, Shahid Kapoor opening the door during an income tax raid, and the many reasons Priyanka remains one of the internet's favourite celebrities. From Bollywood gossip to iconic one-liners, we're looking at the moments that turned Priyanka Chopra into a meme queen long before social media became what it is today.

Pakistani Zombies, Dharma Romance and the Cost of Adulting
Show notes
Thisweek on Khandaan, we're covering a little bit of everything.
Amrita returns from her accidental social media detox with glowing skin, better sleep, and a newfound appreciation for blissful ignorance. Then it's on to the movies.
We discuss Chand Mera Dil and why its young-love-meets-adult-responsibility story left us feeling older than ever. We talk Ananya Panday's performance, the strange online discourse around the film's dance sequence, and whether Lakshya can successfully pivot from action star to romantic lead.
Sujoy reports back from Drishyam 3, exploring how the latest chapter shifts from thriller to character study and asks what life looks like after Georgekutty gets away with everything.
Asim recommends Dacoit: A Love Story, a Telugu romantic thriller starring Mrunal Thakur, and wonders why Bollywood still seems unsure what to do with one of its most compelling actresses.
And finally, we dive into Zombeeid (or Zombie Eid), Pakistan's first zombie movie. Despite the online backlash, we found a surprisingly entertaining genre film packed with zombie mayhem, steroid-fuelled horror, Pakistani humour, and some genuinely impressive gore on a modest budget.
Plus:
A varied episode, but exactly the kind of film-and-pop-culture catch-up we love doing.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna- Love, Lust & New York Melodrama
Show notes
You can get early access to our episodes as well as video version of this episode by signing up and supporting our work through Patreon.
This week, Asim, Amrita, Sujoy, and special guest Parth from TooManyTats revisit Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna — the glossy, messy, deeply divisive relationship drama that pushed Bollywood into uncomfortable territory.
Twenty years later, does Karan Johar’s infidelity epic still work? The gang unpack Shah Rukh’s aggressively miserable “Dev,” Rani Mukerji’s quietly heartbreaking performance, Sexy Sam’s outrageous energy, and why this film feels both ahead of its time and completely stuck in the 2000s. There’s also a detour into today’s Bollywood stars, OTT-era morality, Cannes discourse, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, and whether Maya and Dev would actually survive modern Toronto rent prices.
Expect classic Khandaan chaos, emotional damage, soundtrack worship, and a surprising amount of analysis about chewing gum etiquette.

In this episode, Asim, Amrita, and Sujoy revisit Yeh Dillagi — the glossy 90s rom-com that gave us Ole Ole, soft-boy Akshay Kumar, and peak “pretty boy” Saif Ali Khan.
From Kajol’s unforgettable makeover arc and the film’s Sabrina roots to wildly outdated rich-people morality, rain-song dream logic, and VHS-era capitalism, the gang dives deep into why this movie still works as a nostalgia machine.
Expect conversations about 90s fashion, Bollywood’s disappearing rom-com energy, questionable drunk acting, random Karisma Kapoor cameos, and why every rich family in Hindi cinema apparently owned plastic lawn chairs.
Plus: the soundtrack absolutely slaps.
