Ep. 16 - Genre Focus Series: Contemporary - Know the Rules to Break the Rules
Show notes
Host: Kelli Woodruff
Guest: Regan Jackson Jurick
Contemporary dance is all about creativity, innovation, and freedom of movement—but what really makes a piece contemporary? And how do we move beyond simply putting steps together to create something meaningful?
In this episode of Genre Focus, I'm joined by Regan Jackson Jurick, owner of The Woodlands Dance Center, for an in-depth conversation about the many layers of contemporary dance. We explore the influences that shape this ever-evolving genre and discuss how technique, movement quality, musicality, and personal expression come together to create choreography that connects with an audience.
We take a closer look at the importance of a strong technical foundation, the role of improvisation, and how dancers can explore movement through texture, intention, resistance, and breath. Regan also shares insight into making intentional choreographic choices, listening beyond the lyrics, using space effectively, and developing movement that serves a purpose rather than simply checking off a list of tricks or skills.
Whether you're a director, dancer, choreographer, or dance educator, this episode will give you new ways to think about contemporary dance and ideas to take straight back to the studio or rehearsal room.
