  1. Tired of Too Much Stuff Not Enough Space? 6 Truths You Can Face Today to Stop Making Clutter Harder Than It Needs to Be #236

    Episode 236

    Show notes

Why do you keep tidying the same rooms and still feel like the stuff is winning?

We've been told the answer is to get more organised, so we keep throwing more effort at exactly that. The trouble is that some of what we do in the name of organizing is what keeps the piles coming back, and none of it means you're lazy or messy.

In this episode, I'm sharing six uncomfortable truths about the decluttering mindset, the habits that look sensible and still keep us overwhelmed with too much stuff. That junk room you keep the door shut on has a price, and when I looked up what an ordinary UK spare room rents for, the yearly figure ran into thousands of pounds.

    You'll learn:

    • What your junk room could be worth if it held something other than stuff
    • Why the answer to too much stuff not enough space is never another basket
    • What hiding clutter in a drawer before visitors arrive does to the decision you postponed
    • What out of sight does to returns, deadlines and paperwork when you're decluttering with ADHD
    • Five questions to help you decide if ‘keeping things just in case’ is worth the space
    • Why keeping the dress with the tag still on won't bring the money back
    • What five minutes and five items can do when you're stuck on how to start decluttering
    • What helps when starting on your own is the hardest part of decluttering
    • Why your belongings might be taking more from you than they give back

If you're looking for how to declutter when you have too much stuff, or you keep asking why is decluttering so hard, this episode is for you.

Here's to a home that makes room for the life you're living now,

    • How perfectionism and unrealistic expectations can stop you from getting started.

  3. Overwhelmed by Clutter as a Mom with ADHD? Why Wanting to Tidy and Actually Starting Feel So Far Apart with Morgana Beckly #234

    Episode 234

    Show notes

Have you ever looked around your messy house and wondered why keeping on top of everything feels so difficult?

If you're a mom with adhd, even simple household tasks can feel exhausting, especially when you're juggling children, work, and everything else life throws at you.

In this episode, I'm joined by Morgana Beckly, known on Instagram as @adhd_mumof3_, for an open and honest conversation about motherhood, clutter, and the challenges of managing a home with ADHD.

    You'll learn:

    • How late diagnosed adhd can change the way you understand years of struggling with household tasks, guilt, and shame.
    • Why ADHD and perimenopause can make it harder to maintain a cleaning routine, even when you've had systems that worked before.
    • How toy clutter and everyday family belongings can quickly take over your home, leaving you overwhelmed by clutter.
    • Why clutter anxiety can affect your mood, patience, and family life, especially when you're an overstimulated mom.
    • How to declutter with adhd by focusing on one manageable area instead of trying to organize your entire house.
    • Simple home organization ideas that make it easier for young children to put away their shoes, coats, bags, and other belongings.
    • How to let go of unrealistic expectations and feel more comfortable with a home that works for you and your family.

If you've ever felt embarrassed by your home, struggled to get started with decluttering, or wondered why everyone else seems to find keeping things tidy so much easier, this conversation is for you.

Here’s to a home that’s tidy enough for you,

    Caroline

  4. Tired of Judging Yourself for ADHD and Clutter? The ADHD Awareness Month Shift to Help You Drop the Self Judgment and Set Up a Home That Works for You #233

    Episode 233

    Show notes

Why do you keep walking past the same bag by the front door when you know exactly what needs doing with it?

We tell ourselves that if we cared enough, we'd have done it by now. So when the bag has sat there for six weeks, we decide we're lazy, or messy, or just rubbish at this. What we never count is how many decisions that one small job is asking for before we've even picked it up.

In this episode, I'm marking ADHD Awareness Month by talking about what I wish more people understood about ADHD and clutter, including why task initiation is so much harder than it looks from the outside. The women in my recent paper reset had put off their paperwork for months, some for years, and what got them going had nothing to do with motivation.

    You'll learn:

    • Why decision fatigue makes putting one thing away feel enormous
    • Why you buy another one when you already own three
    • Why out of sight out of mind makes clear counters backfire for some brains
    • How clutter blindness stops you seeing the letter you left out as a reminder
    • Why being overwhelmed by clutter doesn't mean you're lazy or don't care
    • How making the job smaller gets you past task paralysis
    • Why decluttering is easier with someone alongside you than on your own
    • Why a home that looks fine can still mean someone is struggling
    • Why ADHD organization works better with fewer steps than with matching containers
    • What question to ask yourself to find where to start decluttering

Whether you're trying to work out how to start decluttering when overwhelmed or you want to understand task paralysis in someone you love, this episode is for you.

Here's to asking what's making it hard,

    Caroline

  5. Embarrassed by Your Messy House? Why Letting Go of Perfectionism Makes Your Home Easier to Clean, Reset, and Live In #232

    Episode 232

    Show notes

What if the home you keep measuring against everyone else's has been good enough for a while now?

When our homes don't measure up, we tell ourselves we're not organised enough or disciplined enough, and that other women manage this better. I know because I’ve spent years using other people's homes as a measuring stick, noticing what wasn't right.

In this episode, I'm talking about comparing yourself to others, and why a decluttering mindset has to start with the standard you're holding your home to.

    You'll learn:

    • What a pair of jeans in storage showed me about the standard I'd been chasing
    • What turned other people's homes into a measuring stick for my own messy house
    • Why I stopped chasing the perfect home and what I needed instead
    • Why my home still gets messy, and why that's what a normal messy house looks like
    • What the paper reset asked instead of building the world's most beautiful filing system
    • Why letting go of perfectionism started with my home before it reached my body
    • What wanting a lived in home changed about who I'm keeping the house tidy for
    • What question helps you stop comparing yourself to others when you look around your home

If you've been searching for how to stop comparing yourself to others or overcoming perfectionism in the home you actually live in, this episode is for you.

  6. Why ADHD Task Initiation Feels So Hard (and How to Get out of ADHD Paralysis Without Planning the Whole Project) #231

    Episode 231

    Show notes

Have you ever finally dealt with a pile you'd avoided for months, then wondered why you couldn't do it again the next day?

We tell ourselves we were just motivated that day, and when it doesn't happen again, we decide something must be wrong with us.

In this episode, I'm talking about ADHD body doubling and task initiation. There's a reason the pile you've avoided for months can suddenly feel doable on a different day, and it's easier to recreate than you'd think.

    You'll learn:

    • What 15 minutes of virtual body doubling did for piles you'd walked past for years
    • What sits underneath feeling ADHD overwhelmed by six months of paperwork on the kitchen counter
    • Why ADHD task initiation can be the hardest part of a simple-looking job
    • What the cafe where you answer emails has to do with body doubling for ADHD
    • Why the answer to “What is body doubling?” involves nobody standing over you
    • What an ADHD accountability buddy asks you instead of why you didn't do it
    • What the last job you finally tackled says about task initiation strategies that fit you
    • Why calendars, alarms and GPS change how you think about support in ADHD decluttering
    • What question to ask about ADHD procrastination instead of wondering what's wrong with you

If you've been searching for “Why does body doubling work for ADHD?” or “How to get out of ADHD paralysis?”, this episode is for you.

  7. Overwhelmed by Paper Clutter? Why ADHD Decision Fatigue Turns 40 Pieces of Paper Into Dozens of Decisions (Even When You Know What to Do) #230

    Episode 230

    Show notes

If you've got unopened envelopes in bags under the bed and a form you've been walking past for weeks, come and deal with them with me during the Paper Reset starting September the 26th. Join me for three days and leave knowing exactly what to do with the next pile and trusting that you'll come back to it. https://go.carolinethor.com/paper-reset-sept26pod

Have you ever felt frustrated that a pile of paper is still on the dining room table when you know exactly what to do with it?

In this episode, I'm talking about why knowing what to do with paper doesn't make ADHD decluttering easier, and how ADHD decision fatigue grows with every piece you pick up. Sometimes it starts with one question, "Do I need this?", and ends with you on the floor surrounded by folders three hours later.

    You'll discover:

    • What ADHD decision fatigue has to do with a leaflet you might want someday
    • Why out of sight out of mind ADHD leaves a letter sitting on your kitchen counter
    • What an ADHD filing system needs that 27 beautifully labeled categories can't give you
    • How ADHD shame can grow out of "I still haven't dealt with that"
    • How a pile of paper turns into the cycle of ADHD avoidance
    • What a 12-minute job left for six weeks says about ADHD procrastination
    • Why a five-minute job can bring on ADHD task paralysis when an interesting two-hour one doesn't
    • What ADHD organization tips can make a huge pile of paper small enough to start today
    • What a bill waiting to be paid changes about how to organize paperwork
    • Why paper with logos on it can feel too important to recycle

If you've been searching for how to declutter paper or how to reduce decision fatigue in a way that actually works for your brain, this episode is for you.

Here's to one piece of paper and one decision,
    Caroline

  8. Buried in Half-Finished Jobs? Why Progress Not Perfection Rebuilds Self Trust When Your ADHD Brain Only Sees the Pile #229

    Episode 229

Why do you keep looking at what's left instead of what you just did?

In this episode, I'm talking about what happens when you start something and don't finish it, and why progress not perfection is the only standard a home can hold.

I walk you through the third option that sits between finishing the whole thing and not bothering at all, and how shrinking the job is what makes decluttering with adhd workable on a day when you've got 20 minutes. We'll also look at what's happening in your head when you stop halfway.

    You'll learn:

    • What your brain does with the pile that's still on the table
    • Why we decided a job only counts when the whole thing is finished
    • Why adhd procrastination starts with a job that looks like hours
    • How adhd overwhelm turns half an hour into a reason to not start
    • How to declutter with adhd when the whole job won't fit in your day
    • What to do when you keep expanding the job while you're doing it
    • Why unfinished tasks become evidence in a story you tell about yourself
    • How stopping on purpose at 20 minutes builds self trust
    • What to ask yourself before you walk away from a session
    • Why three days won't clear your paper clutter, and what it can do instead

If you've been searching for how to start decluttering when the job feels too big, or for adhd decluttering advice that does not assume you've got a whole free afternoon, or for paper clutter organization you can actually keep up with, this episode is for you.

Here's to leaving it better than you found it,

  9. Why Mental Load Feels So Heavy When You're Relying On Visual Reminders To Remember Everything You're Trying Not To Forget #228

    Episode 228

    Show notes

How many things around your home are there because you’re trying not to forget about them?

The unopened letter on the counter. The parcel by the door that needs returning. The school form waiting for a signature. The insurance claim you still need to submit. Each one might seem small, but together they create a lot for your brain to keep track of.

In this episode, I’m talking about the mental load of all those things we keep meaning to deal with, and why leaving a visual reminder out can feel like the safest way to remember it, especially if you have ADHD or recognise yourself in ADHD traits.

    You’ll learn:

    • Why unfinished tasks often turn into visual clutter, even when you know exactly where those things belong.
    • Why your brain may be relying on objects as reminders, and what happens when there are too many competing for your attention.
    • Why an ADHD brain often needs to see things in order to remember them
    • How to notice paper clutter and paper piles before they build up
    • Why a seemingly simple task can feel much bigger than it looks, particularly when it involves several hidden steps.
    • How putting things off can start costing you money as well as time
    • A simple way to look at the things sitting around your home differently, without immediately deciding you need a whole new organising system.

And if paperwork is one of the things you’ve been telling yourself you’ll deal with later, this episode is your invitation to start noticing your own patterns with curiosity instead of judgment.

Here's to noticing our patterns instead of judging them,

    Caroline

I also touch on how this connects with Episode 193, Why Visual Reminders Turn Into Clutter, and Episode 173, Clutter Distractions, Procrasticleaning, and Mental Load.

  10. Why Do I Keep Avoiding Things I Know I Need To Do? The ADHD Avoidance Cycle at Home and Why Getting Started Has Nothing To Do With Motivation #227

    Episode 227

    Show notes

Why do you keep avoiding things you know you need to do?

You know what I mean. The unopened post sitting on the side. The form that would probably take five minutes. The donation bag you keep walking past. The email you still haven’t sent.

Task avoidance can be so frustrating, especially when you know the job itself is small. But avoidance is not always about how long something will take. Often, it is about the emotional weight attached to the task, the uncertainty around it, or simply not knowing how to begin.

In this episode, I’m talking about ADHD avoidance and why small tasks can start taking up so much mental space when we keep putting them off. If you have ADHD, avoiding tasks can also be connected to executive function and task initiation, which can make getting started feel much harder than it looks from the outside.

We’ll look at what is really happening when you keep putting something off, including the avoidance cycle that so many of us get stuck in, why telling yourself to “just do it” usually doesn’t help, and how to make taking action easier.

    You’ll learn:

    • Why a five-minute task can feel much harder than it actually is
    • What can be happening underneath avoidance
    • How uncertainty and hidden steps can make small tasks feel overwhelming
    • Why avoidance gives you temporary relief but can create more stress later
    • How ADHD can affect task initiation and getting started
    • Why the emotional weight of a task can grow the longer you leave it
    • How guilt and self-criticism can make task avoidance even harder
    • Simple ways to make the first step feel smaller and more manageable
    • How to identify the next physical action instead of thinking about the whole task
    • Why you do not need to finish everything for your progress to count

If you’re looking for help to take action the things you’ve been avoiding, this episode is for you.

Here’s to fewer things competing for your attention,

  11. The Money Hiding in Your Home: How Home Decluttering and Organizing Help You Save Money and Find Financial Wins #226

    Episode 226

    Show notes

Have you ever felt the frustration that comes from buying something, bringing it home, and then discovering you already owned it?

Maybe it was hiding at the back of a cupboard. Maybe you forgot about it completely. Maybe you knew you had one somewhere, but finding it was more effort than simply buying another.

Those moments can feel small, but they say a lot about the hidden ways clutter costs us money.

In this episode, I’m sharing what happened when I started a Financial Wins Challenge inside Clutter Free Collective. I thought it would be a fun experiment in saving money and becoming more aware of our shopping habits. I didn’t expect it to reveal quite so clearly how much our home clutter, belongings, habits, and spending are connected.

And once we started paying attention, the financial wins began showing up everywhere.

As we discuss what happened, you’ll learn:

    • How clutter can lead to unnecessary spending and why decluttered items can create unexpected financial wins.
    • Why being able to see and find what you own makes saving money much easier.
    • How small changes to your shopping habits add up to meaningful savings over time.
    • Why your fridge, cupboards, paperwork, subscriptions, and storage spaces are probably affecting your money awareness.
    • How impulse spending contributes to clutter, especially for women with ADHD.
    • Why organizing products isn’t always the solution when your home already feels full.
    • How becoming more aware of what you own helps you make better decisions without guilt or deprivation.
    • Why addressing home clutter changes the way you think about what you buy, use, keep, and waste.

If you want to become more intentional about your shopping habits, and see the connection between your home and your finances in a completely different way, this episode is for you.

Here's to noticing what you already own,

    Caroline

ps. Once you start looking, you’ll be surprised by how much money is hiding in your home.

  12. Scared to Let Go of Sentimental Items? The One Question That Makes ADHD Decluttering and Home Organization Easier #225

    Episode 225

    Show notes

What if the way you say I love you has nothing to do with flowers or a beautifully written card?

In this episode, I walk you through what everyday acts of love have to do with ADHD clutter and the piles that build up at home.

In this episode, I talk about a reel I posted called saying I love you in ADHD, and why so many people saw themselves in it. I talk about the ADHD traits that shape how we love and how we forget, and why clutter overwhelm gets read as proof that we don't care enough. I also talk about how much of what we own arrived here through love, and what that does to our decisions.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why doom piles keep appearing in the same corner of the same room
    • What the reel about saying I love you in ADHD touched in so many people
    • Why ADHD hyper focus can turn one passing comment into three hours of research
    • What the gap between caring deeply and executing consistently looks like
    • Why just ‘put it away’ can be unhelpful advice for an ADHD brain
    • How to notice the everyday acts of care you've never counted as love

  13. Overwhelmed by Clutter? What A Tiny House Stay Taught Me About Home Clutter (And Why Organizing Keeps Failing) #224

    Episode 224

    Show notes

Have you ever wondered if a bigger home would make home organization easier?

In this episode, I walk you through what two nights of tiny living taught me about home clutter and the houses we live in every day.

I talk about staying in 35 square meters with my son and our dog, and how surprised I was by how calm it was there. I came home with a fresh perspective on my own house and one question I'm still asking myself about the things I keep.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why I stopped missing things I'd normally reach for constantly
    • What made my decision fatigue disappear within a day
    • How a small space stayed clutter free by design
    • What one small detail on the cupboards changed about how I moved through the house
    • Why a smaller fridge changed more than just my shopping
    • What a genuinely simple home made me realize about my own place
    • Why the storage space worked so well when there was intentionality
    • What I realized about the hidden cost of every object we own
    • What question I brought home with me that I'm still asking

If you've been searching for living with less inspiration or a reason to rethink what fills your home, this episode is for you.

  14. KonMari Method© Meets Architecture: Why Home Organization Fails When Your Home Layout Fights Your Routines with Talor Stewart #223

    Episode 223

    Show notes

Does home clutter collect in the same few spots no matter how often you tidy? Have the usual decluttering tips stopped working on your entryway and your bathroom?

You're not the only one who's cleared a room on Sunday and lost it again by Wednesday.

In this episode, I'm joined by Talor Stewart, a licensed architect with more than 25 years in the industry, who created Conscious Home Design to help people design their homes around their lives.

Talor and I talk about how the layout of a house sets the pattern of a day, from which way you turn when you get out of bed to how far you carry an armload of ingredients across the kitchen. He explains why entry foyers and bathrooms take the heaviest hit, and why that comes down to size and adjacency more than discipline. We also talk about where his work meets the decluttering work I do, because both point towards a home where everything has a place to go back to.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why home design shapes your daily routines more than you'd expect
    • How to spot the friction points in your home layout that you've stopped noticing
    • Why entryways collect the most chaos in a busy household
    • Why bathroom clutter follows the same pattern as the entryway
    • What to look at first when open plan living makes tidying harder
    • Why ADHD clutter in a household isn't a discipline problem
    • How to balance connection and privacy when you share a home with other people
    • Why the KonMari Method© and conscious home design point in the same direction
    • How to improve home flow between the rooms you use most
    • What to consider when choosing storage solutions for a small space

If you've been searching for clutter solutions, better home organization, and decluttering tips that work, this episode is your invitation to look at your home differently before you change anything.

  15. What Is Your Home Clutter Telling You? How to Find the Right Clutter Solutions Before You Organize Another Pile #222

    Episode 222

    Show notes

Is clutter actually trying to tell you something?

We've been taught that a tidy home is the goal, but what if the piles around your house are providing valuable information instead of proving you've failed? In this episode, I explain why understanding the reason behind your clutter is the first step toward lasting change.

I share the 4 most common messages clutter can reveal and how each one points to a completely different solution. We explore when you simply own too much, when your organizing systems need to change, when ADHD clutter is actually supporting your daily life, and when emotional clutter is tied to difficult decisions rather than disorganization.

    I also explain:

    • Why visible clutter often starts with hidden clutter.
    • How better home systems reduce recurring piles.
    • Why home organization isn't always the answer.
    • When decluttering is more effective than organizing.
    • Why understanding your habits creates better clutter solutions.
    • How to stop blaming yourself for recurring home clutter.

If you've ever wondered why organizing doesn't seem to stick, this episode will help you identify what your clutter is actually trying to tell you so you can choose the right solution with more clarity and compassion.

  20. Kitchen Counter Clutter: How to Keep Kitchen Counters Clear With a Simple Home Organization System That Reduces Daily Mess #217

    Episode 217

    Show notes

You wipe down the messy counter, step back, and enjoy that lovely feeling of having a clear space. Then somehow, almost without noticing, the papers, water bottles, chargers, receipts, and random bits and pieces start creeping back.

If this sounds familiar, you're definitely not alone.

The good news is that there may be more going on than simple clutter, and understanding it could completely change how you approach your home.

In this episode, I’m talking about why the kitchen counter so often becomes the place where everything lands, from school papers and post to chargers, keys, water bottles, and all those little things you’re afraid you might forget.

And the thing about kitchen counter clutter is that it shows up when something in your home needs a clearer system. So instead of jumping straight into kitchen counter organization or trying to declutter the kitchen counter again and again, we’re going to look at what the clutter is really pointing to.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why your kitchen counter becomes a magnet for clutter
    • What the things sitting there might be trying to tell you
    • Why paper clutter often builds up in this one spot
    • How delayed decisions can quietly turn into visual stress
    • Why buying another basket or tray may not be the real solution
    • Simple questions to help you work out what system is missing
    • How to keep kitchen counters clear by making small, practical changes
    • A small five-minute decluttering challenge to help you see your counter differently

Join me as we uncover what your kitchen counter clutter might be trying to tell you and how a few small changes could help your home feel calmer, lighter, and easier to manage.

Here’s to clearer counters and calmer homes,
