What makes Italy feel like Italy? | Local Aromas
Show notes
Benedetta asked Valeria this question, and it turned out to be much harder to answer than we expected.
Because where do you even begin?
The food? The history? The beautiful cities? The incredible landscapes?
Well, yes. Obviously. 🥰
But we quickly realized that none of those things really explains why people fall so deeply in love with Italy, or why they miss it so much when they leave.
So we started thinking about our everyday lives.
Walking everywhere. Sitting in a piazza for no particular reason. Organizing our entire day around lunchtime. Laughing with strangers. Talking to the same market vendors every week. Going to our favorite bar, where everyone knows us.
And then we remembered a little conversation Valeria had at the bakery just the other day.
She went in to buy bread and ended up sharing childhood memories with a man she had never met before.
Two minutes. A loaf of bread. And they both walked away smiling.
And suddenly, we had our answer.
Maybe the magic of Italy isn't only in the things you can see.
Maybe it's in the way you feel when you're here.
Seen. Connected. Part of something.
And perhaps that's what you really miss when you leave. ❤️

What Hospitality Really Means in Italy | Local Aromas
Show notes
What happens when you invite someone over to an Italian home? 🏠
Well, first of all, there's probably going to be food. And coffee.
Definitely coffee. 😂
This week, Valeria decided to play a little game with Benedetta.
Benedetta is the host. Valeria is the guest.
And we're walking through everything that happens when someone comes over to an Italian home, whether it's a planned dinner or a completely unexpected visit.
🎁 What do you prepare?
🎁 What do you bring?
🎁 Should you arrive with wine, flowers, or dessert?
🎁 And what happens when someone shows up right around lunchtime? As usual, what started as a conversation about little Italian habits turned into something much bigger.
Because we realized that we don't really entertain in Italy. We host.
We're not putting on a show. We're not trying to impress anyone. We want people to feel comfortable, cared for, and completely at home.
And if there's one thing we know as locals, it's that there's always room for another chair at the table and another plate of pasta. 💞
We also talk about how Italian hospitality has changed over the generations, why everyone ends up chatting in the kitchen, and why saying goodbye after an Italian dinner can take almost as long as the dinner itself. 😂
Because at the end of the day, it's never really about the food. It's about the people around the table. ❤️

Everything You Think You Know About Olive Oil Might Be Wrong | Local Aromas
Show notes
We have a confession to make: we're olive oil snobs. 😂🫒
But we weren't always!
Before we became trained olive oil tasters, we believed some of the very same things we're about to talk about in this episode.
So Valeria decided to put Benedetta, our olive oil sommelier, to the test with a little game.
True or False?
Green olive oil is better. Bitter olive oil has gone bad. Light olive oil has fewer calories. You shouldn't cook with extra virgin olive oil. First cold pressed means better quality.
And that's just the beginning!
There are 10 statements in total, and guess what? They're ALL false!
We talk about why so many of these misconceptions exist, what actually makes an extra virgin olive oil good, how to store it, and why you should never save that special bottle for years.
But we also get into something we're especially passionate about: olive oil pairing.
Because once you discover how different one extra virgin olive oil can taste from another, and what happens when you pair the right oil with the right food, there's really no going back.
Fair warning: after this episode, your olive oil budget might go up. Ours certainly did! 😂
But you'll never look at a bottle of extra virgin olive oil quite the same way again.

Why Italians Wait All Year for Certain Foods | Local Aromas
Show notes
Summer is over.
What are we thinking about?
Pumpkin. Mushrooms. Artichokes. Chestnuts. New olive oil. 😂
Because in Italy, a new season doesn't only mean a change in the weather. It means saying goodbye to foods we love and getting excited about the ones we've been waiting months to eat again.
Of course, we could buy tomatoes in winter or strawberries almost all year long.
But we choose not to.
And that simple choice led us into a much deeper conversation than we expected.
We talk about seasonal markets, sagre, Christmas foods, dishes that only make sense at certain times of year, the excitement of spotting the first porcini mushrooms, and even discovering that fish and potatoes have seasons too. 😂
But eventually we realized that seasonality teaches us something beyond food … it teaches us to wait.
To anticipate something. To enjoy it while it's here. And then to let it go.
Because when everything is available all the time, eventually nothing feels particularly special.
Maybe happiness doesn't always need to come from something extraordinary.
Sometimes it's simply seeing the first peaches at the market and thinking, They're back! ❤️
Those little moments cost almost nothing, but they can make everyday life feel a little more meaningful.
And that's something you can bring into your life wherever you live.

Why Italians Have So Many Everyday Rituals | Local Aromas
Show notes
Apparently, Italians have a lot of rules. 😂
At least that's what people keep telling us.
🙄 No cappuccino after a certain time
🙄 Eat lunch at lunchtime
🙄 Have something to eat when you drink
🙄 Go for aperitivo
🙄 Take a passeggiataAnd why do we ALWAYS go back to the same bar, market stall and neighborhood shops?
The funny thing is ... we don't think of any of these as rules.
So we started talking about them.
And somewhere between Benedetta remembering her grandmother bringing her coffee in bed and Valeria talking about the people at her Sunday market who know all about her family, we realized these little Italian rituals have something much deeper in common.
Connection. 💞
💕 Your bartender remembers your order
💕 Your vegetable vendor asks where you've been when you miss a week
💕 Someone makes your coffee before you wake up
💕 You sit around a table
💕 You take a walk with a friend without even deciding where you're goingNone of these moments is particularly important on its own. Some last three minutes.
But together, they create a feeling of belonging.
And maybe that's one of the reasons so many people tell us they feel something different when they're in Italy.
We started this episode talking about Italian rules. We ended it realizing that perhaps they're actually little acts of love. ❤️

The Italy Most Tourists Never See | Part 2 | Local Aromas
Show notes
We're back for Part 2 of the Italy you're missing! 🇮🇹
Last week we started making our way through Italy's 20 regions and discovered very quickly that there was NO chance we were fitting them all into one episode. 😂
So this week we're heading south. ⬇️
We start in Abruzzo and Molise, continue through Campania, Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria, and then cross over to our two glorious islands: Sardinia and Sicily.
And this is definitely not a perfectly organized travel guide.
It's us remembering trips, arguing about where we've been 😂, discovering how many places one sister has visited without the other, talking about foods we still remember years later, and making an increasingly long list of places we clearly need to visit.
Because here's the funny thing …
We're Italian. We live here. And there is STILL so much of Italy we haven't seen.
But this conversation also brings us back to something we care about deeply.
We want people to explore beyond Italy's most famous destinations. But we don't want the Italy we're missing today to become the next Italy overwhelmed by social media tomorrow.
Go. Explore. Be curious. Eat the local food. Talk to people. Discover somewhere you had never heard of before.
But experience it because you want to experience it, not because you need to show everyone else that you were there.
There are 20 Italys waiting to be discovered.
And honestly? We still have plenty of discovering to do ourselves. ❤️

The Italy Most Tourists Never See | Part 1 | Local Aromas
Show notes
20 regions. 20 different Italys. 🇮🇹
We recently saw a statistic that stopped us in our tracks: 75% of tourists visit just 4% of Italy.
And after seeing videos of people literally standing in line in the Dolomites for something they'd seen on social media, we started thinking about everything travelers are missing.
So ... we're going on a little trip around Italy.
Actually, it's not so little. 😂
There are 20 regions, we get VERY carried away talking about them, and halfway through we realized there was absolutely no way this was going to fit into one episode.
Welcome to Part 1.
We're traveling through Northern and Central Italy, talking about the places we've visited, what surprised us, what we ate, what we'd go back for, and even the regions we Italians still haven't explored enough ourselves.
From the Alps and Dolomites to Liguria, Piemonte, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, Marche and Lazio, this isn't a checklist of things you "must see."
It's an invitation to look beyond the places everyone else is going.
Because Rome, Florence and Venice are extraordinary. But they're only the beginning. There is another Italy out there.
Actually ... there are about 20 of them. ❤️
And next week, we're heading south.

The Secret to Being Happy | Local Aromas
Show notes
Why are some people happy and others aren't?
That's the question Valeria decided to bring to the table for her birthday episode.
And, well ... we had A LOT to say. 😂
We've both noticed how easy it is to spend life waiting for something to make us happy.
😶 I'll be happy when I find someone.
😶 I'll be happy when I have more money.
😶 I'll be happy when this problem disappears.
😶 I'll be happy when ...But over the years, we've started looking at happiness very differently.
For us, happiness has become much more about peace. About gratitude. About realizing how much we already have. About understanding that we can't control other people or everything that happens around us, but we can learn to control how we react to it.
We talk about our own journey, the difficult moments that changed our perspective, faith, the personal-growth books that started us down this road, the five-minute rule we still use, and the simple gratitude exercise that can completely change how you look at an ordinary bad day.
We're certainly not Zen all the time. 😅 We're still practicing too.
But one thing we've come to believe very deeply is this … happiness is a decision.
And it's a decision we get to make again and again. ❤️

How to Aperitivo Like an Italian | Local Aromas
Show notes
25% drink. 25% food. 50% mood.
That's our formula for the perfect Italian aperitivo. 🍹🍷🍸
But while we think of aperitivo today as that wonderful moment between the end of the day and dinner, its story started somewhere very different: with bitter preparations designed to open your appetite.
Yes, aperitivo was basically medicine. 😲
In this episode, we go down another Italian history rabbit hole and discover how something medicinal eventually made its way from pharmacies into cafés and became one of our favorite Italian rituals.
We talk about vermouth, Campari, Aperol, why Italians love bitter flavors, why there MUST be something to eat when we're drinking, and why aperitivo is definitely not the same thing as happy hour.
We also get into apericena (we have opinions 😂), regional aperitivo traditions, our favorite drinks, and how easy it is to create your own aperitivo ritual at home.
Because you don't need a beautiful Italian piazza, an expensive cocktail, or even alcohol to do aperitivo.
What really matters is that 50% … the mood!
That little moment when the day is finished, dinner hasn't started yet, and you give yourself permission to unplug, relax, and enjoy the people around you. 💞

The Cookbook That Helped Unite Italy | Local Aromas
Show notes
Apparently, Italy's first food blogger was born in 1820. 😂
No Instagram. No YouTube. No email. He wasn't even a chef.
And at 71 years old, Pellegrino Artusi decided to self-publish “La Scienza in Cucina e l’Arte di Mangiar Bene” (Science in the Kitchen and the Art of Eating Well) when Italy itself had only been a unified country for 30 years.
This completely blew our minds!
In this episode, we talk about how Artusi asked people from around Italy to send him their recipes, tested them, shared their stories, and slowly created an enormous cooking community at a time when Italians didn't even necessarily think of themselves as Italian.
And then our conversation takes us into another cookbook we grew up with, Ada Boni's “Il Talismano della Felicità”, our great-grandmother's handwritten recipe notebook, the recipes we have inherited and changed over the years, and the ones we're now passing on to our own children and our Local Aromas Family.
Because maybe that's the real magic of a recipe.
Someone shares it with you. You make it yours. You change it a little. You cook it for someone you love. And eventually, it becomes part of somebody else's story.
And if you're ever afraid you're too old to start something new, remember Pellegrino Artusi.
71 years old. Nobody wanted to publish his idea. So he did it himself.
And more than 130 years later, we're still talking about him. ❤️

Why Italian Breakfast Is So Different | Local Aromas
Show notes
Italian breakfast may be one of the most controversial things we talk about. 😄
Every time we post about it, someone asks …
Where are the eggs? Where is the bacon? Why are you eating so many carbs?!
So in this episode, we're finally talking about how Italians really have breakfast.
We chat about breakfast at home versus breakfast at the bar, why bread has always been such an important part of the Italian morning, how the sweet breakfast we know today is actually more modern than people think, and why cappuccino somehow became attached to the morning.
And then, of course, Italy being Italy, breakfast changes completely depending on where you are.
✔️ A maritozzo in Rome.
✔️ Granita and a warm brioche in Sicily.
✔️ Focaccia dipped in cappuccino in Genoa.
✔️ Budino di riso in Florence. So yes, we eat carbs. And yes, we love them. 😂
That’s exactly why we created our Italian Breakfast Tour in Rome, so you can experience this delicious Italian morning ritual for yourself … the right way! ☕🥐🇮🇹
Italian breakfast is really about much more than food. It's ritual, routine, local culture, and one more little moment of the day that brings people together.

How Can One Tiny Country Have So Much? | Local Aromas
Show notes
How can one tiny boot-shaped country possibly have so much?
Valeria went down one of her research rabbit holes for this episode—and Benedetta had absolutely no idea what was coming. 😄
We're talking about Italy's incredible concentration of history, landscapes, plants, animals, grapes, olives, foods, wines, volcanoes, microclimates ... and even winds.
Because once you start putting all of these things together, you begin to understand something we've been saying for years: traveling through Italy isn't really like visiting one country. Every region, town, landscape, and local cuisine tells a completely different story.
We also talk about something very close to our hearts: preserving all of this.
Italy inherited an extraordinary amount from the people who came before us, but keeping those ingredients, traditions, producers, and local identities alive is now our responsibility too.
And as a traveler, you can be part of that!
So come nerd out about Italy with us. We promise the numbers are much more exciting than they sound. 😂

The Truth About Italian Gelato | Local Aromas
Show notes
We have a confession …
We're complete gelato snobs. 😄
Well … at least Valeria is. Benedetta has slowly been converted over the years.
In this episode, we talk about one of our favorite Italian foods and why not all gelato is created equal.
We share the simple clues Italians use to spot a great gelateria, why bright colors and giant mountains of gelato can actually be warning signs, and why we'd rather skip gelato altogether than eat a bad one.
We also chat about our favorite flavors, Sicilian granita for breakfast, why gelato is one of the healthiest treats you can have when it's made properly, and why artisan gelato is something worth protecting.
If you've ever wondered how Italians choose gelato—or why we get so passionate about it—this episode is for you.
And fair warning ... you'll probably be craving a cone by the end. 🍦❤️

Why Grandparents Are the Heart of Every Italian Family | Local Aromas
Show notes
When people think about Italy, they often picture pasta, piazzas, and beautiful landscapes.
But if you ask an Italian what really holds the family together, the answer is often much simpler ...
… the grandparents! 💝
In this episode, we talk about the extraordinary role nonni play in everyday Italian life.
They're the ones picking children up from school, sharing family recipes, keeping traditions alive, telling stories, offering unconditional love, and helping entire families in ways that often go unnoticed.
We also share our own memories of growing up with our grandparents and how their presence shaped who we are today.
If you've ever wondered why family feels so different in Italy, this conversation will give you a glimpse into one of the most beautiful parts of our culture.

Is Social Media Changing Italy? | Local Aromas
Show notes
Social media has changed the way we travel. ✈️
But has it also changed Italy?
In this episode, we talk about something that's been weighing on our hearts for a long time: how viral videos, Instagram hotspots, and "must-visit" lists are transforming Italian cities, local businesses, and even the way visitors experience our country.
As Italians, we're incredibly grateful that so many people want to visit Italy. But we're also watching historic neighborhoods lose their identity, family-run businesses disappear, and authentic traditions make way for experiences designed purely for social media. 🫥
This conversation isn't about blaming tourists or criticizing social media. It's about asking a bigger question.
⁉️ How can we travel in a way that helps preserve the places we love instead of changing them forever?
We also share why there are places we'll never post publicly, why we design our experiences the way we do, and why we believe every traveler has the power to protect local culture with the choices they make.
We hope this episode inspires you to discover a deeper, more authentic side of Italy. 💖

The Decisions That Change Your Life | Local Aromas
Show notes
It's my birthday week! 🎉
So this time, I got to surprise Valeria by choosing the podcast topic ... and she had absolutely no idea where the conversation was going.
We ended up talking about something that has been on my mind a lot lately: how the smallest decisions can completely change the direction of our lives.
Looking back, so many choices that didn't seem to make sense at the time ended up leading us exactly where we needed to be.
We also talk about trusting your intuition, learning from painful experiences, letting go, finding peace in the decisions you make, and why happiness is often more of a choice than a destination.
It's probably one of our most personal conversations so far, and we hope it encourages you to look back at your own journey with a little more gratitude.
And maybe a little more courage for whatever decision comes next. ❤️

Why Italians Speak With Their Hands | Local Aromas
Show notes
Everyone jokes that Italians speak with their hands. 🤌🇮🇹
The funny thing is ... they're right! 😜
But it turns out there's much more to it than simply being expressive.
In this episode, we went down a rabbit hole that completely surprised us. We discovered that Italian gestures may have roots in Ancient Rome, medieval monasteries, bustling trading ports, and even centuries when people needed to communicate without speaking the same language.
We also share some of our own stories (including a confused policeman, an embarrassing pharmacy visit abroad, and why our dad once thought Benedetta was using sign language 😄).
By the end of this episode, you'll understand that Italian gestures aren't just movements. They're history, culture, and sometimes an entire conversation without saying a single word.

Enjoying the Wait | Local Aromas
Show notes
Do you know what we get genuinely excited about every year?
Strawberries.
Artichokes.
The first tomatoes of summer.
The arrival of peaches. And then ... we happily say goodbye to them until next year.
In this episode, we're chatting about something that is deeply rooted in Italian culture: enjoying the wait.
Valeria and Benedetta talk about why Italians naturally eat with the seasons, why we still get excited when a favorite ingredient comes back, and how waiting for something can actually make life richer.
It's also a conversation about local markets, supporting small producers, why we personally never buy fruit and vegetables at the supermarket, and why food isn't just about eating. It's about paying attention.
Maybe one of the reasons Italy feels a little slower is because we've learned that not everything has to be available all the time.
Sometimes, the waiting is part of the joy. 🫠

How Italians Say Hello | Local Aromas

Everybody knows ciao.
But did you know that the word actually comes from a phrase that meant "I am your servant"?
And did you know that Italians don't just say hello with words? We also say hello with cheek kisses, handshakes, eye contact, and a whole set of unspoken social rules.
In this episode, we chat about one of the most everyday parts of Italian culture: greetings.
From the history of ciao to the eternal question of when to use buongiorno, buonasera, or salve, Italian sisters Valeria and Benedetta share the little details that many people never notice but that shape daily life in Italy.
We also talk about why Italians kiss on both cheeks, why saying hello in the mountains is almost a rule, and how something as simple as a greeting can reveal so much about a culture.
If you've ever wondered how Italians really greet each other, this episode is for you.
