Locked On Cougars - Daily Podcast On BYU Cougars Football & Basketball

The BYU Cougars and Utah Utes are ushering in a new era of rivalry under coaches Kalani Sitake and Morgan Scalley, who combine elite competitive instincts with a spirit reminiscent of the LaVell Edwards and Ron McBride days. The conversation focused on how both coaches, as proud alums, maintain fierce loyalty and a drive to win while setting a balanced, respectful tone that could help reduce the rivalry’s bitter edge. Several points were raised, including the contrast with prior coaches like Kyle Whittingham and Bronco Mendenhall, whose icy relationship fueled years of intense matchups. The discussion explored whether BYU and Utah fans and the broader college football community can learn from the cordial professionalism and leadership displayed by Sitake and Scalley, especially as the “Holy War” returns to the spotlight this weekend.

One concept discussed was the breakout performance of Robert Wright III, who powered BYU men’s basketball to a 94-83 win over Ohio State. Wright racked up 33 points and 5 assists, drawing early national attention and earning praise as possibly the best point guard in America. The discussion explored his ability to lead BYU to new heights, highlighting how his supporting cast—including Bruce Branch III, Tyler Betsey, Jaxon Kohler, and Collin Chandler—fosters a team-first mentality under coach Kevin Young’s new roster construction. A key theme that emerged was Wright’s NBA potential, his leadership on the floor, and the possibility that BYU could see individual and team hardware if his performance remains consistent throughout the long season. The conversation also recapped BYU’s improved depth, versatile offense, and strategies for sustaining success against upcoming opponents.

Beyond the hardwood and gridiron, the discussion turned to BYU women’s cross country, where Jane Hedengren’s stellar run secured her another Big 12 individual title and guided the Cougars to their fourth straight conference crown. Her historic pace and accolades set the tone for BYU’s dominant reputation as a cross country powerhouse. Several points were raised, including Kihei Akina’s top-15 PGA Tour finish at the Vidanta Mexico Open, further positioning him as a rising golf phenom likely destined for the pro circuit. BYU women’s volleyball’s surge to 8th nationally under coach Rob Nielsen and the soccer team’s latest rivalry win round out a week filled with Cougar excellence. The discussion offered a comprehensive roundup, recognizing the multi-sport success stories that are steadily elevating BYU Athletics into the national conversation across football, basketball, golf, cross country, volleyball, and soccer.

Welcome into another edition of Locked On Cougars, hosted by Jake Hatch! The hardwood season is officially underway, and the No. 25 BYU men's basketball program delivered an electric statement performance on opening night, securing a hard-fought victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. Kevin Young’s squad flashed immense potential, proving that high preseason expectations are entirely justified.

On today’s show, we break down every angle of the season-opening win. The night belonged to veteran leader Rob Wright III, who picked right up where he left off, showcasing his star power and orchestrating the offense with elite poise and scoring touch. But what makes this year's roster so dangerous is the supporting cast. We examine the seamless integration of Kentucky transfer Collin Chandler, dynamic freshman Bruce Branch III, and transfer big man Jaxon Kohler, who anchored the frontcourt and provided crucial physical presence inside.

We also spotlight the stellar collegiate debut of freshman guard Brooks Bahr, who stepped up immediately off the bench and provided a massive spark for the Cougars when called upon. Furthermore, we dive into Tyler Betsey's critical contributions from beyond the arc. Betsey showcased why he fits the vital 3 & D role so seamlessly, stretching the floor with elite shooting precision while locking down defensively on the perimeter to stifle the Buckeyes' offensive rhythm.

Tune in as we analyze the rotation, break down the tactical adjustments that sealed the victory, and look ahead at what this high-ceiling roster can achieve in a loaded Big 12 conference! Make sure to subscribe, rate, and review Locked On Cougars on YouTube or your favorite podcast platform!

LJ Martin’s injury status remains the critical storyline as the BYU football program gears up to face the Utah Utes in a high-stakes, top-10 Big 12 rivalry clash. The conversation focused on the ripple effects of Martin’s potential absence, with both fanbases and coaching staffs closely monitoring his clearance. Kalani Sitake’s comments highlight a delicate balance between chasing victory and protecting key players’ futures, with the head coach openly prioritizing long-term player health—even as the biggest game of the season looms. Will the BYU Cougars risk their standout running back, or will Bear Bachmeier be called upon to carry the load against a vaunted Utah defense?

One concept discussed was Utah’s strategic preparation, with Morgan Scalley choosing to game plan as if Martin will play, underscoring the uncertainty that has become a chess match of its own. Sitake addresses the program’s progression, emphasizing the need for “all 11 guys” to execute if BYU wants to generate the kind of offensive magic that powered their win over Notre Dame. Several points were raised, including the significance of this matchup given both teams’ national rankings, the intensity that surrounds the rivalry, and the elevated expectations as the Utes and Cougars now share the Big 12 stage. How will the contest’s morning start time, the first of its kind for BYU since 2023, affect the players and fans?

A key theme that emerged was mutual respect between programs, with Sitake reflecting on his own experiences coaching at both schools and the intertwining histories of staff and families on both sides of the rivalry. The discussion explored the emotional and cultural magnitude of the 'Holy War," as well as the national attention drawn by two top-10 programs battling for postseason positioning. Can BYU withstand Utah’s physicality and maintain their playoff trajectory if Martin is sidelined? Will Utah’s offensive stars—highlighted by NFL-caliber running back Wayshawn Parker—outduel a potentially shorthanded Cougars squad?

With playoff implications, player health debates, and tradition fueling the hype, this breakdown leaves listeners primed for answers as the Cougars and Utes write the latest chapter in their storied rivalry.

BYU football faces a defining week as rivalry tensions escalate—can Kalani Sitake’s squad overcome a history of costly mistakes to challenge the Utah Utes at Rice-Eccles Stadium? The conversation focused on the BYU Cougars’ dramatic win over Arizona State, spotlighting both encouraging progress and persistent issues. One concept discussed was the team’s tendency to “shoot itself in the foot,” from Bear Bachmeier’s ill-timed interception before halftime to defensive lapses in missed assignments and “hero ball.” The discussion explored how BYU must return to Jay Hill’s disciplined, assignment-based philosophy, exemplified by players like Keanu Tanuvasa and Cannon DeVries, to have a fighting chance against Utah’s formidable roster.

Several points were raised, including a lively critique of the Big 12’s officiating inconsistencies and public statements, especially in the aftermath of controversial calls that swayed momentum for both BYU and Arizona State. The analysis included praise for individual standouts such as Jayven Williams, Tre Alexander, and Walker Lyons, and noted the importance of clarity and consistency in special teams decisions—DeVries’ returns and Roger Saleapaga’s crucial plays stand out as key moments. The conversation made it clear that the path to victory over Utah will require BYU to eliminate errors, trust in their system, and harness the full efforts of emerging stars like Bachmeier, Legend Glasker and Kyler Kasper. Will BYU deliver its most complete game when it matters most?

The discussion then shifted to BYU men's basketball’s intriguing season opener against Ohio State at the Delta Center. A key theme that emerged was the Cougars’ revamped, offensively potent roster under Kevin Young in his third year. The talk highlighted Bruce Branch III’s high ceiling, Rob Wright’s role as offensive engine, and Jaxon Kohler’s potential to dominate against the Buckeyes’ frontcourt. Anticipation builds around possible NBA Draft matchups between Branch III and Ohio State’s Anthony Thompson, while fans of fast-paced basketball will find plenty of intrigue with both teams’ emphasis on shooting and scoring. Questions linger regarding Ohio State’s health, especially with John Mobley Jr.’s ankle injury potentially tilting the balance.

As the episode wrapped, the hosts provided sharp insights into the turbulence across the Big 12, spotlighting Texas Tech’s emergence, UCF and Kansas State’s surprising stumbles, and bowl eligibility races shaping the conference’s outlook. The conversation probed whether Iowa State’s Jimmy Rogers can sustain his team’s momentum after a statement win over Oklahoma State. BYU’s schedule intensifies as football and basketball seasons intersect—will this be the week the Cougars silence doubters and seize their moment in both arenas?

Welcome into another edition of Locked On Cougars, hosted by Jake Hatch! The No. 8 BYU Cougars found a way to win on a tense Halloween afternoon, grinding out a hard-fought 27-20 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils at LaVell Edwards Stadium. But while getting another tally in the win column keeps the Cougars marching forward in the national landscape, there is plenty of critical evaluation to unpack from a performance where the team turned in a noticeably lackluster showing across all three phases.

On today's show, we break down every angle of Saturday's narrow escape. Despite securing the seven-point victory, the BYU offense experienced extended stretches of stagnation, the defense occasionally struggled to contain opposing momentum, and operational miscues kept Arizona State within striking distance until the final whistle. We examine why the rhythm felt disjointed, how quarterback Bear Bachmeier and the supporting cast managed to make winning plays when the pressure was highest, and why cleaning up these sloppy execution errors is non-negotiable moving forward.

With the Arizona State test officially in the rearview mirror, all eyes instantly pivot to the most anticipated, high-stakes week on the annual calendar: The Holy War. Next Saturday morning, the Cougars pack their bags and head up to Rice-Eccles Stadium for a monumental collision against the arch-rival Utah Utes. We take an early, deep-dive look at the matchup, analyzing what this fierce rivalry clash means for BYU's College Football Playoff resume, the Big 12 championship race, and the hostile environment waiting for them in Salt Lake City.

Can Kalani Sitake's squad rediscover their sharpest form in time for enemy territory? What are the primary tactical battles that will decide the outcome of the ultimate state rivalry? Tune in for complete game breakdowns, early Holy War previews, and all the expert insights you need to get dialed in! Big 12 drama intensifies as Utah clings to conference supremacy but faces a surging Cincinnati squad eager for back-to-back statement wins. The episode kicks off with a deep dive into the pivotal Utah vs. Cincinnati matchup, where Utah's emotional high and travel challenges make the contest anything but a sure thing. Red zone execution emerges as the defining metric, with the conversation highlighting Cincinnati's recent efficiency—cashing in on key opportunities while Texas Tech squandered theirs. Standout performances by Bearcats lineman Evan Tengesdahl and the improved play of JC French fuel intrigue: can Utah handle the physicality and hostile atmosphere at Nippert Stadium, or will Cincinnati upend the Big 12 once more?

The focus then shifts to Texas Tech's urgent quest for redemption against Arizona, led by dual-threat quarterback Noah Fifita and a balanced, top-ranked offense and defense. The discussion explores the Red Raiders' offensive inconsistencies, possible quarterback changes, and how their defense—with a streak of consecutive pick-sixes—is both opportunistic and vulnerable to big plays. BYU football, having already survived an Arizona test, seeks a “get-right” opportunity against Arizona State, banking on defensive improvement and capitalizing on the Sun Devils’ struggles. The hosts dissect how both the BYU Cougars & TTU have “used their mulligan” for the season, raising the stakes for the remaining matchups.

Forum shifts toward Oklahoma State’s road test against Iowa State, with strategic adjustments and new contributors on defense giving Cowboys fans cautious optimism. The insights extend to the rising importance of roster depth, backups earning late-season roles, and the recruiting implications for retention in an increasingly competitive Big 12. Across the conference, coaching turmoil at Baylor and TCU draws scrutiny. With Joe Klanderman stepping in at Baylor and speculation swirling around Sonny Dykes, the coaching carousel theme intensifies. Notable stadium environments—like UCF’s “Bounce House” and Provo’s raucous home field—are praised for their unique impact on games.

The conversation wraps with the financial realities of NIL in roster building, Kansas schools’ potential impact on coach firings, and how parity and upsets across college football are redefining playoff access. Fan engagement, home field dynamics, and quarterback showdowns set the stage for a must-watch Big 12 weekend. Will the league’s unpredictability enhance its reputation, or will another upset cast further doubt on its elite status? Get the latest analysis and insight on the storylines dominating Big 12 football.

BYU football aims to prove their resilience and restore contender status as they prepare to face Arizona State, just a week after a humbling defeat to UCF. Will Bear Bachmeier rise to the occasion and deliver a statement win with both LJ Martin and Evan Johnson out, and can BYU’s defense return to its dominant form after a shaky showing? With a College Football Playoff berth still possible, the pressure is on for Kalani Sitake and the BYU Cougars to refocus and execute on both sides of the ball.

The conversation focused on the Cougars’ determination to bounce back, highlighting Tre Alexander’s candid leadership as BYU’s new No. 1 cornerback. One concept discussed was the importance of resetting mentally—Alexander emphasized blocking out criticism, recommitting to fundamentals, and igniting team chemistry after a week filled with outside doubt. The discussion explored the need for defensive improvement, especially tackling, after BYU missed as many as 21 tackles in their loss at UCF, an uncharacteristic lapse for a unit that had been dominant earlier in the season.

A key theme that emerged was the challenge posed by Arizona State’s potent receiving corps, featuring Reed Harris (over 800 receiving yards) and Colorado transfer Omarion Miller. Several points were raised, including questions over whether ASU’s unsettled quarterback situation—potentially showcasing Jake Fette in his first career start—will hinder their offensive attack. The discussion examined BYU’s defensive matchups, with Alexander and Jayven Williams stepping up in the secondary, and the likely return of Cannon DeVries to the nickelback role. Concerns lingered over tackling consistency and the need for defensive discipline, as well as the team’s ability to mentally compartmentalize last week’s frustrations to prevent a two-game slump.

The mailbag section brought out pressing questions from fans about Keanu Tanuvasa’s influence on the defensive line, the absence of key playmakers, and whether Kalani Sitake’s leadership can maintain BYU’s focus for a postseason run. Other topics included NBA and Big 12 implications for BYU basketball with Jaxon Kohler, plus offbeat queries about game day traditions, rivalries, and fan culture—including reactions to conference penalties for controversial chants.

Can the BYU Cougars recapture their edge, establish control early, and reassert themselves as a Big 12 force? With College Football Playoff hopes hanging by a thread, every snap against Arizona State takes on new significance as the team fights not just for victory, but for its season’s identity.

BYU football prepares for a pivotal showdown as they host the Arizona State Sun Devils, looking to rebound after a disappointing defeat against UCF. Can Kalani Sitake’s squad lock back in and keep Big 12 Conference title hopes alive, or will Arizona State’s emerging stars deliver an upset in rainy Provo? With Bear Bachmeier seeking redemption at quarterback and standout running back LJ Martin’s health in question, the BYU Cougars face critical personnel decisions at a pivotal point in the season. Across the field, the Sun Devils confront their own uncertainty, as quarterback Jake Fette may be thrust into the spotlight against a tough Cougars secondary hampered by Evan Johnson’s injury.

The conversation focused on the unpredictable quarterback situation for both programs, with ASU potentially relying on true freshman Jake Fette and Brigham Young University weighing committee approaches in the backfield. One concept discussed was the impact of injury setbacks on both sides—whether Martin can make a speedy return for BYU and how the secondary adjusts without Johnson. A key theme that emerged was the resurgence of Cardae Mack, whose explosive running and multiple Big 12 Freshman of the Week awards may signal a game-changing factor for Arizona State. The discussion explored defensive trends, highlighting BYU’s tackling woes against UCF and the Sun Devils’ efforts to regain their physical edge, led by players like Reed Harris and the return of slot playmaker Derek Eusebio.

Several points were raised, including the chess match between Arizona State’s dynamic receivers and BYU’s reshuffled cornerbacks, and how weather conditions may tip the scales toward a ground-heavy offensive approach. The assessment highlighted challenges in defending top targets like Kyler Kasper and Legend Glasker and questioned whether either team’s run defense can bounce back. Historic rivalry notes surfaced, recalling previous heated matchups and the off-field drama surrounding coaches Kalani Sitake and Kenny Dillingham. Both programs expressed aspirations of building a renewed Big 12 rivalry, leveraging local and historical ties between Salt Lake and Tempe.

Fan questions ranged from tactical game predictions to which young stars can seize the moment. Will Arizona State’s young offense take advantage of BYU’s depleted secondary, or will the Cougars capitalize on home-field advantage and set the tone before the Holy War against the Utah Utes? Don’t miss this in-depth analysis of injuries, emerging talents, and the keys that could decide BYU’s bounce-back bid in the Big 12 race.

Big 12 Conference sends a powerful message by issuing the harshest penalties yet for anti-Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chants after incidents at recent BYU football games, most recently the clash with UCF. The conversation focused on the conference’s new zero-tolerance directive, featuring fines starting at $100,000 and escalating up to $600,000, plus in-game penalties like 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct infractions in football and technical fouls in basketball. Could these moves finally compel fans to shift behavior and stamp out bigoted chants targeting Brigham Young University and its faith-based identity?

One concept discussed was the broad significance of the Big 12’s updated policy, which establishes real-time game-changing penalties for discriminatory conduct. Several points were raised, including how earlier fines against Colorado and ongoing incidents at places like Cincinnati failed to curb anti-LDS sentiment in crowds. The new measures mandate that individuals ejected for discriminatory behavior lose the right to attend athletic events for the rest of the academic year, signaling a tougher stance across the league. The discussion explored what it might mean for schools like UCF—now fined $100,000 for its fans’ conduct—and how direct, punitive action may galvanize coaches, administrators, and athletes to demand better from their fanbases.

A key theme that emerged was how the threat of in-game penalties could radically change the atmosphere at Big 12 games. What happens when a fan chant suddenly costs the home team valuable field position or a technical foul at a critical moment? The conversation considered whether sending fine money directly to BYU—much like the SEC’s approach to opponent payouts for field storming—would heighten accountability even more. Listeners are left to ponder whether tangible penalties will turn the tide and finally create a more respectful environment for BYU’s players and supporters.

The discussion closes by previewing BYU’s upcoming game against Arizona State, where true freshman quarterbacks like Bear Bachmeier could make an impact. With tensions and stakes higher than ever, will Big 12’s bold actions end a pattern of bigotry and usher in a new era of sportsmanship regarding the BYU Cougars?

Big 12 playoff hopes hit a snag as BYU and Texas Tech stumble, shaking up national perceptions and opening debate about the league’s strength. Is the Big 12’s shot at three College Football Playoff teams already off the table? Utah surge with Devin Dampier’s standout performance, while questions swirl around BYU’s undisciplined loss to UCF and how prestige may hinge on UCF’s trajectory. The crew tackles the impact of upsets, comparing national narratives with the SEC and spotlighting the unforgiving nature of college football rankings.

Baylor’s coaching search heats up after Dave Aranda’s ouster—who’s next for the Bears? Jeff Traylor and Lincoln Riley top the wishlist, but surprise candidates emerge as speculation runs wild. Meanwhile, the Big 12’s decision to slate the BYU-Utah Holy War for a 10:00 AM local kickoff sparks debate: does a marquee rivalry deserve a prime-time stage?

Just weeks ago, the Beehive State seemed destined for a historic, high-stakes collision at the top of the Big 12. Both BYU and Utah carried undefeated records and top-ten aspirations into late October. Yet as November approaches, the state's two premier football programs find themselves charting remarkably different trajectories.

For BYU, the momentum that built during a spotless 6-0 start took a painful hit in Orlando. The Cougars' 39-31 double-overtime loss to UCF exposed real vulnerabilities—namely, late-game defensive lapses, self-inflicted procedural penalties, and an over-reliance on freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier to pull out dramatic fourth-quarter saves. While BYU remains very much in the conference title hunt at 3-1 in league play, the loss disrupted their margin for error and raised legitimate questions about whether their defensive front can withstand the weekly attrition of a deep conference schedule.

Utah, meanwhile, has hit its stride with clinical efficiency. Under head coach Morgan Scalley, the Utes have answered every test, extending their record to 7-0 with a physical 21-13 victory over Houston. Quarterback Devon Dampier’s explosive dual-threat production (including a 150-yard, two-touchdown rushing performance against Houston), paired with a suffocating defense that bends but rarely breaks, has established Utah as the sole remaining undefeated team in Big 12 action.

Where BYU is currently working to patch up execution errors and regain its physical edge, Utah is operating with total clarity and control. With the Holy War looming on November 7 in Salt Lake City, the Utes look every bit like a national playoff contender, while the Cougars are forced to prove their October misstep was an anomaly rather than a slide.

Rivalry drama, coaching rumors, and conference power dynamics take center stage in this action-packed Big 12 breakdown.

BYU football brushed off calls for sweeping changes after their frustrating loss to UCF, doubling down on the proven process that has fueled 29 wins in their last 34 contests. With Kalani Sitake at the helm, the focus is on refinement, not upheaval—a strategy that could pay dividends as Brigham Young University preps for a pivotal Big 12 Conference clash with Arizona State. Can this veteran squad leverage lessons learned in Orlando and re-establish its reputation as a conference powerhouse when the Sun Devils visit Lavell Edwards Stadium?

The conversation focused on BYU’s reaction to adversity, with offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick and center Bruce Mitchell reiterating the importance of focus, process, and accountability. Tackling issues and missed takeaways against UCF offered teaching moments; coaches highlighted the need for disciplined preparation and capitalizing on defensive opportunities, a sentiment echoed by defensive coordinator Kelly Poppinga’s desire to break the recent takeaway drought. Rather than overhaul routines, the Cougars are fine-tuning their details—eschewing overreaction for measured adjustment, a hallmark of Kalani Sitake’s leadership style.

One concept discussed was Derwin Gray’s “NOW Principle” featured in his recent Deseret News op-ed. Gray, a BYU legend, outlined “No distractions, Obsess over the details, and Win the moment” as keys to both football and life. The discussion explored how these principles mirror Sitake’s focus on player character and emotional stability, urging fans and players alike to avoid roller-coaster mindsets and root their identity in more than wins or losses. Gray’s perspective—rooted in personal transformation from player to pastor—underscores the dual mission of BYU football to create both champions and leaders.

A key theme that emerged was the BYU Cougars’ growing national respect. Despite the UCF loss, respected analysts like Rece Davis and Stewart Mandel publicly maintained belief in BYU’s strength and the Big 12’s overall competitiveness. BYU’s gritty win over Notre Dame and physical trench play earned comparisons to SEC and Big Ten programs, revealing a shifting narrative: BYU is no longer an outsider but a front-runner capable of contending with elite competition. The discussion explored whether finesse-based teams can threaten BYU’s power-based style—and how upcoming clashes with Arizona State and Texas Tech will test their resilience.

Several points were raised, including the program’s broad embrace of all backgrounds, Tom Holmoe’s inclusive vision, and the evolving expectations of Cougar Nation. Is BYU’s steady mindset the secret to long-term Big 12 relevance? Can Sitake’s prgoram outperform doubters and reset the College Fotball Playoff race? The table is set for a fascinating showdown in Provo.

BYU and Utah’s “Holy War” generates major fan backlash after the Big 12 schedules the storied rivalry for a 10 AM local kickoff—raising questions about media priorities, the limitations of existing TV contracts, and whether powerhouse college football programs should explore independent broadcasting. With insider perspectives from the world of sports production, Jake Hatch and Bryan Brown conversation explores the feasibility of BYU and Utah leveraging BYUtv’s state-of-the-art production capabilities to take control of the game’s distribution, possibly netting millions in sponsorships, and reshaping the future of college football rights deals. From market reach to sponsorship strategies and the logistics of producing major games outside traditional networks, the episode asks whether it’s still worth it for Big 12 teams to cede control to ESPN for a guaranteed check—or if the next round of media rights negotiations should empower schools with more flexibility and creative additional revenue streams for marquee games.

Key insights center on how BYUtv’s production facility rivals national broadcasters, the massive corporate sponsorship dollars Brigham Young University and Utah can attract, and the broader implications for conference realignment and college football’s evolving broadcast landscape. How will the next wave of media rights shape programs’ independence and exposure? Will streaming giants like Netflix or Amazon become the new power brokers, granting schools like BYU and Utah direct access to global audiences—and the ability to schedule showcase games on their own terms?

The discussion pivots to on-field strategy as Aaron Roderick’s play-calling for BYU football comes under fire after a controversial late-game sequence against UCF. The chaos of clock management, the risk-reward calculations for teams backed up on their own goal line, and the reality of offensive play design in high-pressure situations are unpacked in detail. Roderick’s reputation as a top offensive coordinator and quarterback architect is examined, with a candid take on how even creative minds need to balance aggressiveness with risk management.

Utah’s position atop the Big 12 standings is scrutinized against a backdrop of intense conference parity and unpredictable weekly results. The path to a Big 12 title is fraught with potential upsets, from gritty road tests at Cincinnati to trap games against surging opponents like Arizona and TCU. As the conference cannibalizes itself, the questions grow louder: can Utah’s culture and depth survive the schedule gauntlet? Can the BYU Cougars regain their footing and stay in the race? And above all, how will off-field innovation and shifting media power shape the destiny of these flagship programs as college football enters its most unpredictable era yet?

BYU football faces a crucial turning point after their loss to UCF, but is Cougar Nation's reaction more about history than reality? The conversation focused on the concept of "battered fan syndrome" after a high-profile setback, highlighting BYU fans’ anxieties around postseason hopes and College Football Playoff scenarios. The discussion explored how the loss to UCF might impact Brigham Young University’s playoff resume, but emphasized that marquee victories—especially an emphatic win over Notre Dame—keep the BYU Cougars’ fate in their own hands. With chaos reigning across the SEC and Big Ten, several points were raised, including the potential for 3- or even 4-loss teams to make the playoff, suggesting that BYU’s narrow path is still a viable route to national relevance.

A key theme that emerged was the strategy required for BYU to bounce back. The message for fans is clear: don’t lose faith. Despite disappointing losses in recent years that derailed promising seasons, BYU remains ranked in the top 10 nationally and has a favorable matchup against ASU to get back on track. The conversation explored how national media, including Stewart Mandel, still rate BYU highly and note the challenging schedule that set up the UCF game as a classic trap scenario. Further, the discussion covered how BYU’s upcoming rivalry game with Utah takes on new drama—both programs are in contention for the Big 12 title, and the rare 10 a.m. kickoff could tilt the atmosphere toward the Cougars’ advantage. Did recent complaints and controversy around Utah Utes football trigger this scheduling shift? The rivalry’s intensity, history, and its direct playoff implications take center stage as both fanbases prepare for a possible top-10 showdown.

On the basketball front, the BYU men's basketball program appears ready for a breakout season. The discussion explored Bruce Branch III’s rapid emergence as a star and the national buzz about his NBA lottery potential, possibly going top-2 in the draft. Insights included how head coach Kevin Young’s recruiting strategy continues to pay dividends, bringing in high-level talent like Branch, Rob Wright, Jaxon Kohler and Collin Chandler—players poised to elevate the team’s ceiling even higher. The conversation focused on BYU’s team-oriented style, the importance of new transfers with tournament experience, and the anticipation around the season-opener against Ohio State. Could this squad surpass 2024’s Sweet 16 run and deliver one of the program’s best seasons ever? The journey begins, and Cougar Nation is watching closely.

The BYU Cougars and Utah Utes ignite national interest as their legendary rivalry faces a seismic shift: the upcoming game is set for a 10:00 AM Mountain Time kickoff, defying expectations and sparking debate across college football. Will Brett Yormark and the Big 12 Conference’s bold scheduling deliver maximum TV impact, or will this early start alienate local fan bases and challenge player routines? The discussion focused on Yormark’s public commitment to elevating the BYU-Utah matchup as a showcase event, unpacking the network-driven motivations and whether the noon Eastern slot truly serves both teams. One concept discussed was how this prime TV window, often monopolized by programs like Ohio State, offers Brigham Young University & Utah unprecedented national exposure. Yet, questions linger: will the game lose some of its signature intensity without the familiar electric night atmosphere, and can the players adjust to a 10:00 AM tilt after rarely facing early starts at home?

A key theme that emerged was the impact of the new schedule on team preparation, with special attention to the intricate logistics of game-day routines—from pre-dawn wake-up calls to revised training tables. The discussion explored BYU football’s abbreviated history with morning games, referencing past matchups against Oklahoma and New Mexico, and speculated whether early kickoffs could affect the teams’ on-field execution. Several points were raised, including the realities of balancing family commitments and youth sports for fans attending such an early rivalry game.

Kalani Sitake’s weekly press conference added urgency, spotlighting BYU’s defensive setbacks against UCF—particularly missed tackles and assignments that contributed to last week’s defeat. Insights included injury updates for key contributors LJ Martin, Evan Johnson, and Trevin Ostler, fueling intrigue about how the BYU Cougars will adapt against Arizona State. The conversation underscored Sitake’s focus on accountability and technical improvement, steering attention away from officiating controversies and instead doubling down on readiness for the next challenge. With ASU up next, BYU faces a pivotal moment: can the Cougars correct course, overcome adversity, and remain contenders in the Big 12 title race? The show offers in-depth analysis of everything at stake, from roster health to strategic adjustments—essential listening for fans invested in BYU’s pursuit of postseason dreams.

BYU football unraveled against UCF as critical breakdowns and missed opportunities spark renewed debate about the program’s trajectory in the Big 12 Conference race. Does Bear Bachmeier’s late-game execution or the defense’s inability to contain UCF quarterback Keyone Jenkins raise tougher questions about where Kalani Sitake’s team stands—and who’s ultimately responsible for the setback?

The conversation focused on a handful of pivotal moments that swung the contest out of BYU’s control. One concept discussed was Bachmeier’s costly interception near field-goal range late in the first half, which set up a UCF touchdown just before halftime. Another key theme that emerged was BYU’s defensive collapse on third-and-17—a routine screen play that turned into a 50-plus yard gash due to missed tackles, flipping the momentum permanently in UCF’s favor. The discussion explored individual and systemic defensive failures, underscored by the count of 21 missed tackles, and a lack of effective pass rush that left Jenkins free to dictate the game’s outcome.

Several points were raised, including the resurfacing debate among BYU fans about offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick’s play calling. Is the criticism warranted when the offense generated 373 total yards, or should more accountability fall on defensive coordinator Kelly Poppinga after the defense allowed 463 yards and failed to pressure the quarterback? Amidst the scrutiny, the episode highlights Kalani Sitake’s leadership in accepting blame publicly and shifting focus to necessary corrections ahead of the Arizona State matchup.

The discussion turned to player development, emphasizing positive takeaways like Kyler Kasper’s growth, the stability of the left side of the offensive line with Sonny Makasini and Paki Finau, as well as flashes from younger contributors like Braxton Lindsey. Challenges remain, notably Bear Bachmeier’s accuracy in wet weather and the receiving corps’ struggle to separate from defenders. The debate on the officiating, including the controversial roughing the kicker penalty, added fuel to fans’ frustrations.

Closing with a Big 12 roundup, the BYU Cougars’ defeat is contrasted by Utah’s continued unbeaten march, while other conference contenders like Texas Tech and Houston face their own adversity. Will BYU regroup and reassert themselves, or will the loss to UCF mark a turning point in their season and spark bigger questions about internal cohesion and the path forward in a rapidly shifting conference landscape?

BYU men's basketball showcased grit and growth as they stormed past the UNLV Runnin' Rebels, overturning a double-digit first half deficit for an 89-77 victory—are the ingredients for a Big 12 Conference breakthrough already in place? Collin Chandler flashed the all-around game that made him Utah's former Mr. Basketball, while freshman Bruce Branch III celebrated his 18th birthday with an electrifying second-half performance, sparking talk of a “Fab Four” core alongside Robert Wright III and Jaxon Kohler.

The conversation focused on the BYU Cougars’ resilience and ability to stick with their game plan despite a poor start, turning early 12-point adversity into a decisive win. One concept discussed was how BYU, lacking an elite rim protector, relied on perimeter defense and forced 18 UNLV turnovers, converting those stops into 19 points and shifting the game’s momentum. A key theme that emerged was Kevin Young’s adaptability, making just-in-time tactical tweaks while trusting his squad to execute, highlighting growth opportunities in rebounding—losing that battle 41-34—and improving their shooting efficiency.

The discussion explored standout performances as Chandler paced the team with 23 points and Branch demonstrated why scouts are eyeing him as a potential NBA lottery pick, contributing 14 points and 8 assists. Several points were raised, including Kohler’s versatility—scoring inside and hitting three-pointers—and Wright’s steady playmaking. The debate over the “Brig Three” nickname expanding to the “Fab Four” signals emerging leadership across multiple positions. Off the court, BYU women’s volleyball extended their win streak to 14 under new coach Rob Nielsen, defeating #8 Arizona State and reinforcing Brigham Young University Athletics' broader momentum.

With key takeaways ranging from defensive tenacity to a new generation of star power, listeners are left pondering: Can BYU maintain this energy and clean up weaknesses as conference play looms? This episode spotlights the team’s upward trajectory and the contagious winning culture taking hold in Provo this fall. Don’t miss the inside look at how Cougar determination is setting the stage for an exciting season.

Welcome into another edition of Locked On Cougars, hosted by Jake Hatch! The magical, undefeated run for the BYU Cougars has officially come to a heartbreaking end following a wild, mistake-laden 39-31 double-overtime loss to the UCF Knights down at a hostile Bounce House in Orlando.

On today’s episode, we break down every agonizing angle of a chaotic afternoon where nothing seemed to go right for Kalani Sitake’s squad. Just weeks after pulling off historic heroics against top-tier competition, the Cougars found themselves on the wrong side of an absolute thriller, learning the hard way how thin the margin for error is in the rugged Big 12 conference. We examine the game's momentum swings, the tactical adjustments made by UCF, and the gut-wrenching sequences in double overtime that ultimately snapped BYU's perfect record.

The recurring theme of this matchup was clear: tough breaks and self-inflicted wounds caught up with the Cougars in all three phases of the game. We dive deep into the costly offensive miscues, missed execution in critical moments, and stalled drives that prevented BYU from putting the game away. On the defensive side, we look at the late-game lapses and missed tackles that allowed the Knights to claw their way back into contention. Add in pivotal special teams gaffes that swung field position at the worst possible times, and you have a recipe for a heartbreaking road upset.

When a team plays with zero margin for error, small mistakes compound quickly. Unfortunately, those cracks finally caught up with the Cougars under the Florida sun. But while the dream of an undefeated regular season has vanished, the book on the 2026 season is far from closed. We analyze how this locker room handles its first dose of adversity, how the coaching staff will regroup following a crushing defeat, and what mental and physical adjustments must be made immediately to ensure this single loss doesn't turn into a downward spiral.

The Big 12 championship race remains wide open, and how BYU responds next week will define the true character of this football team. Tune in for complete postgame analysis, honest player evaluations, and a look forward to the road ahead. BYU football's 29-4 surge since 2024 has fans and critics alike asking: what more can Kalani Sitake’s team do to earn national respect? Despite climbing to the No. 2 national ranking after toppling then-No. 2 Notre Dame, naysayers continue to discount the BYU Cougars’ title credentials—so can this resilient squad block out the noise and keep rolling against UCF? The conversation focused on the persistent undervaluing of BYU’s accomplishments, how Sitake’s “control what you can control” mantra drives the team forward, and the current stakes as Big 12 Conference and College Football Playoff dreams intensify.

One concept discussed was Bear Bachmeier’s development into a dynamic passer, with offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick’s confidence in the quarterback now on full display, especially with LJ Martin sidelined. Keanu Tanuvasa’s defensive breakout, supported by linemates like Justin Kirkland and Anisi Purcell, sparked talk about NFL draft attention and how BYU’s pass rush creates havoc for opposing offenses. Injury updates, especially Martin’s timeline for return, play a pivotal role in tracking BYU’s offensive potential for the stretch run.

A key theme that emerged was the challenge of managing “rat poison”—the external hype, media narratives, and increased attention that come with ranking and prominence. The discussion explored coaching strategies to keep players grounded, learning from past missteps like the 2024 Kansas loss, and how locker room leadership maintains week-to-week focus. Questions also surfaced about roster depth, including whether to pursue a bell-cow back through the transfer portal next season, considering the successes and limitations of current backs like Journee Tonga, Devon Eka, and Preston Rex.

Several points were raised, including the implications of high-profile wins on recruiting—could the Notre Dame victory sway undecided prospects and fortify future classes? The episode also tackled fans’ concerns about recent special teams miscues, the likelihood of ESPN College GameDay returning for a BYU-Utah showdown, and the ever-evolving landscape shaped by NIL deals that impact roster construction and player movement.

The discussion wrapped with a look at BYU’s current playoff standing, analyst projections, and the necessity of consistent execution to remain in the national conversation. As BYU seeks another statement win against UCF, the spotlight is on their ability to rise above distractions, maximize emerging star talent, and maintain their trajectory toward Big 12 and CFP contention.

Utah welcomes Houston to Rice-Eccles Stadium for a top-15 Big 12 Conference clash with College Football Playoff hopes on the line. The conversation focused on whether Devon Dampier and the Utes can withstand Houston’s electric offense, led by quarterback Connor Weigman, in an atmosphere charged by a rare double feature of ESPN's College GameDay and a late night kickoff. Houston arrives as one of the Big 12's hottest teams, with a steadily improving defense and play-calling wizardry. Key matchups include Houston’s fierce front seven against a Utah attack known for its "eye candy" and big plays, and questions swirl about which team handles the pressure and late start best. The discussion explored how time of possession and emotional letdowns after big wins could spell disaster for either contender. Utah’s home field advantage and the nation’s longest active college football winning streak loom large as deciding factors.

Several points were raised, including the national resonance of BYU football’s signature win over Notre Dame, which not only bolstered the BYU Cougars' CFP resume but reshaped expectations across the Big 12. A key theme that emerged was the impact of controversial officiating decisions in the BYU-Notre Dame game, potentially affecting AP voting and perceptions of Big 12 legitimacy. The discussion spotlighted Kalani Sitake’s coaching acumen, with one concept discussed being whether he’s now the conference’s top head coach. Utah and Texas Tech’s CFP paths were dissected, along with the risk of BYU falling into a trap game against UCF and Texas Tech’s gritty test at Cincinnati.

The conversation highlighted the scheduling quirks—late kickoffs that hinder AP poll visibility and fan engagement, but may still benefit Utah thanks to altitude and climate advantages. Experts debated College GameDay’s propensity to return for the “Holy War” (BYU vs. Utah) and the crowded calendar of high-stakes matchups ahead. Looking across the league, attention turned to Kansas State’s running attack, Arizona State’s quarterback drama, and potential upsets in Baylor-Kansas and Arizona-Iowa State. Closing out, panelists considered whether the Big 12 is poised for multiple playoff bids as BYU, Utah, and Texas continue to climb national rankings. Don’t miss this all-encompassing breakdown of an explosive Big 12 football weekend.

BYU football is riding high at #2 in the national polls after their resounding victory over Notre Dame, but the pressure ramps up as Kalani Sitake’s team heads to UCF for a high-stakes Big 12 clash. Is this the week the BYU Cougars prove to the nation—and to the skeptics—that their championship ambitions are for real? Jake Hatch breaks down why the matchup at the Bounce House is a pivotal opportunity for Brigham Young University to reinforce their reputation, maintain their perfect record, and test the “big dog” mentality that's driving this season’s success.

Key discussions center on the keys for victory, including avoiding costly special teams mistakes that have lingered in recent weeks with muffed punts from Tiger Bachmeier and Cannon DeVries. Jake outlines the importance of BYU’s offense staying efficient despite the continued absence of LJ Martin and highlights how Sione Moa’s health remains a lingering question that could impact the ground game. Offensive line coach and run game coordinator TJ Woods joins the show to share valuable insider perspectives, praising the O-line’s dominant showing against Notre Dame, candid insights on Bott Mulitalo’s rapid growth, and optimism about the unit’s ability to rise to new challenges against UCF’s tough run defense. Woods also unpacks the evolution of BYU’s screen game and the maturity developing in leaders like Bruce Mitchell, whose presence at center ensures the offense is dialed in week after week.

Listeners’ questions take center stage as Jake tackles the potential ripple effects from recent Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stances against sports betting on BYU's odds, roster depth on special teams, and whether the new five-year eligibility rule is giving younger players a faster track to critical game experience. Intriguing hypotheticals prompt an assessment of which scenario benefits BYU more: an undefeated season and a College Football Playoff #1 seed with a first-round bye, or a single loss and the advantage of a home playoff game at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Jake considers the nuances of playoff positioning, conference championship stakes, and the difficult tradeoff between chasing hardware and maximizing postseason opportunity.

As the Cougars gear up to face the UCF Knights in Orlando, can this squad live up to its billing and deliver another signature performance? Get Jake’s final score prediction and insights on what it will take for BYU to solidify their spot among college football’s elite. Don’t miss the most comprehensive breakdown of BYU’s current path, the players poised to make an impact, and what’s at stake as the playoff race intensifies.
